came on a saturday night right when they opened at 5pm and they already started filling up pretty quickly. there is an array of seats along a hot pot bar and everyone gets their own pot. the menu feels super similar to mokkoji. i ordered the tonkotsu broth (+$4) and a large (6oz) wagyu short rib. first off up charging $4 for tonkotsu soup is pretty insane. the meat was okay quality and the meal tasted good but for this price i could've gotten similar quality ayce. the service was really great tho and my waitress was extremely attentive. read more

Cute restaurant, love that its bar top seating. I ordered the Sukiyaki broth and it was a little too sweet for my liking, but this is just personal preference I probably would've diluted it with water, but they don't allow you to add hot drops to the pot for whatever reason, so I figured I couldn't add a splash of water to my pot. Can anyone tell me why they don't allow hot drops in the broth? First shabu place I've been to that doesn't allow it. Interesting..... Good cuts of meat like any other shabu place. So happy I gave this place a try after my usual shabu place was closed. Love that they are open later than other shabu spots. Wonderful service and very attentive staff. The quality of the food was outstanding and you can tell it's all very fresh. Portion size is also very wonderful for the price point. Goma sauce is spot on as well. Even the napkins are sturdy! This place is hands down the best Shabu around. High quality meat and veggies, immaculate vibes and the best staff. I love Ursula and Santiago, all of the staff is amazing. Interesting layout as the entire restaurant is just a giant bar counter. If you have a group of 4, you are all seated in a row so the people on either end won't really be able to talk to each other. The counter space also feels cramped with drinks, appetizers, the vegetables, the meat, and your pot of broth. The portion sizes aren't huge, I got the largest, a "double" order of meat and still needed more. This is a decent place to bring a woman if she doesn't eat as much, because then you can both order doubles and you can eat her extra meat. If you're a man with a decent appetite, you'll need more than 8 oz of meat. All that nitpicking aside, I still have it five stars because the meat was some of the best quality meat I've had, and I've been to a lot of hot pot and shabu and kbbq restaurants. I just got the Wagyu chuck roll and it was beautifully marbled and tasted great. The vegetable platter that it comes with is good too, nice variety of mushrooms and vegetables. I got the fresh ramen noodles and they were good. The thing that puts it over the top is our server was great. He was a super friendly white dude that was really knowledgeable and took great care of us. When we were halfway finished with our meat, he even flipped the meat tray around for us so it was easy to reach, which helped to alleviate the tight counter space. Only had a short wait, there's a waitlist on an iPad at the front and it moved surprisingly quickly for a smaller restaurant. Parking lot is ample. Overall I would come back if I was on a date with a non-obese girl or my elderly mother since they don't eat as much so I could eat their extra meat. read more

This is an update. My coworker had what seemed like salmonella eating the raw egg when we came here the first time a couple of years ago. But nonetheless we decided to give it another try, without any of that raw egg. This time was well, worse. We didn't have salmonella but all three of us had some variation of discomfort that night, either mild diarrhea or just bad stomach ache. We will NEVER be back again. read more

My niece was in town and we wanted to treat her and her sister to hot pot after meeting at church for service. We had dined here before for Father's Day. Because it was not all you can eat, we knew that she would not be able to overeat here. We were greeted upon entering. It was around 8 PM on a Saturday. There was no wait and they found space for the 6 of us. I had the traditional kombu and Ora King Salmon which is sushi grade with brown rice. They can customize your vegetable plate here removing vegetables and adding more of say green leafy vegetables or mushrooms. My husband tried the carb free shirataki. The young ladies all had combos. Ursula our server and the ancillary staff worked well together to meet our dining needs. Ursula has very nice manners making you feel like an honored guest at her table. She helped me with my soup base swirling 3 times for my udon. She made a very unique porridge as rich as risotto with my younger daughter's leftovers. Yes! So many GF options. I'm allergic to gluten and go here pretty much monthly (sometimes weekly or more 🤷🏻‍♀️). Everything GF is noted on the menu. Pretty much avoid certain broths and noodles and you're good!

I don't believe Tabu Shabu offers reservations. They do, however, have a waitlist that can be joined via Yelp. I highly recommend joining the Yelp waitlist and getting there early.

Don't get me wrong--the ingredients tasted fresh, from the seaweed to the fish, but some of the regular sushi felt like it was missing a little character or that extra something that makes you want another piece. Now, the sashimi and the no-rice sushi? Those are the ones to look out for. Really good flavor and definitely the standouts of our meal. Service was fast and efficient, although it came across a little snobbish at times. The place itself is okay, but it can get pretty crowded, especially during peak hours, and expect a line when it gets busy. Portions were decent, prices were fair, and there's a good variety for the whole family. I'd probably come back and focus more on the sashimi and some of their specialty items next time. I really adore Shabu Shabu! Who doesn't like cooking there own broth in a cool bar along the beach? Definitely worth a visit. We arrived here in Costa Mesa, was greeted promptly and sat down on the only 3 low bar seats in the entire restaurant (best seats in the house) All the staff were super friendly, very polite and quick. I only got one of their names; Jose was on point walking us through the menu and it turns out we can customize the veggie plate and the Mega Man portion of meat- I ended up getting half Certified Angus Beef Ribeye and Prime ribeye. The meat was amazingly sliced and consistent with the size and marbling. They even gave an extra few ounces I noticed (whoever was the meat cutter, you did a fantastic job) and the veggie plates were beautiful and fresh although that is standard in Shabu. The broth at the end was epic, I finished all of the food in front of me. I could tell that the people who worked here had a passion for serving great food and connection. Being picky with my shabu I was skeptical of this place (I know, I should be more open minded--hell, and I should be less racist but we know we're all a little inside). When we arrived there was a wait, but the staff was very friendly and offered us drinks. After a few hits of sake and beer, we were seated in no time. With choices like shabu, sukiyaki, and barbeque, I was a bit torn on what to try. Our waiter recommended we try a half and half of shabu and sukiyaki. "Sounds like a plan," I said as I opted for the beef combo. The quality of the meat is awesome. Not some crappy protein that turns shit brown and tough; no, this place is legit. One thing got me excited to try this place and that was that their beef teriyaki is a sliced steak…read more Most places do chopped beef or thin beef shavings, but it's best when you take a nice delicious steak and you grill it medium medium rare and you slice it and chisel some teriyaki sauce on it. However, they marinade their steak in baking soda. Sometimes baking soda is used to tenderize meat, but it is not necessary when you are doing a steak like this. And the baking soda flavor is very strong and ruins the flavor of the steak because I can't taste the steak anymore and then they put a lot and a lot of sesame seeds on it so the second overpowering flavor is sesame seeds. It is overkill and in this case less is more, they should grill the steak without any baking soda just lightly salted and then let the teriyaki sauce flavor it. They cooked it well done too, they have to cook it medium so the steak is a little more delicate.. if they make these minor changes, I would increase my rating. Flavor wise I would give it a zero because it didn't work, but because of the ingredients and the food itself wasn't bad. I'm leaving it at three. The shrimp tempura was OK. It wasn't like most other places, but it actually tasted pretty good and the tempura sauce was great. The curry bowl tasted like Vermont curry and I didn't like it. It was also lacking chunks of potato and carrots . if you're gonna use a packaged curry, I prefer S&B extra hot black box. It's really not that spicy, but it has a good flavor.. Otherwise, all the ingredients seemed fresh. The packaging was nice and the customer service was good.

I also ordered the salmon skin hand roll, which was disappointing. The salmon skin wasn't crispy at all, and there was quite a bit of salmon meat still attached to the skin. I personally prefer a salmon skin hand roll to actually be mostly crispy skin. On top of that, it was extremely salty. My husband started with the soft shell crab roll, and honestly, it was terrible and completely inedible. We actually had to send it back, and my husband NEVER sends food back. The soft shell crab was cold and tasted like it had been cooked much earlier, possibly even the day before. It had that unpleasant taste of old or overused frying oil and was just awful. There was also way too much imitation "crab" meat in the roll compared to the actual soft shell crab, which, after tasting the soft shell crab, may have been for the best. He also ordered the special sushi platter. That was OK, and the fish did seem fresh, but we found the cuts of fish to be rather small and thin. Overall, this was such a disappointing experience, especially because we've been here several times before. We came back because we had enjoyed it in the past.

The serving size were four large rolls that were more than we could even finish. It was accompanied by a flavorful peanut sauce. Spooning the sauce onto the first bite was a total surprise and didn't know what to expect. The ingredients were so fresh, crisp, and flavorful. The peanut sauce didn't have that cheap skippy peanut butter taste but was not overpowering and just enhanced every bite. My wife had the Chicken Curry with rice. It was a large serving that she couldn't finish on her own and I joined in to assist with my own spoon. It was filled with pulled chicken that was tender and tasty. The curry was more of a broth that had the perfect amount of curry flavor. Not too spicy and the soft white big potato halves made the dish feel like a warm, hearty bowl of comfort food. The rice was some of the tastiest I've ever had. Not sure what it's seasoned with but it's yellow and stick and delicious and balanced the curry broth perfectly. I ordered the marinated chicken with rice. It's served with a wonderful fish light fish sauce that you often get with vermicelli dishes at Vietnamese restaurants. The chicken was a thigh meat that was tender and flavorful. The rest rice was the perfect accompaniment that filled me up in a good way. Highly recommend both dishes. They use no seed oils, everything is fresh, made to order and be patient as the food doesn't come out right away. Good, healthy, fresh food takes time and worth the wait. They have a bunch of boba and coffee drink options that many around us had ordered and seem to really be enjoying. This place will go on our list of must return and perfect for those summer evening date night spots in one of the best beach cities in all of California.

The service was attentive and friendly. I got the chicken vermicelli. It was delicious. Made fresh with a flavorful side of fish sauce. The shrimp spring rolls were also freshly prepared with crisp lettuce and plump shrimp. These were lettuce heavy rather than vermicelli heavy which made them nice and light. A few tables inside with a few tables in front of the restaurant.
