Was craving sushi and decided to come here to get my sushi fix. They currently have indoor and out door dining with lots of spacing between tables. We were immediately seated and the server took our drink order. We ordered the white peach sake ($17/bottle). We then took a look at the menu and picked a few rolls. We ended up getting the Sawa Signature Maki tempura roll, Star Wars Tempura roll, spider roll, and the Albacore delight roll. The Star Wars roll came out first, and we completely devoured it! It was good! The Spider roll and Sawa Signature Maki came out next and we were a little surprised with the Sawa Signature Maki. It was NOT good. That's probably why their signature roll doesn't have a picture on the menu. It was the most expensive roll on the menu, but disappointed us the most. I never thought I would be unhappy with a spider roll, but their spider roll didn't meet my expectations either. My roll barely had any soft shell crab in it. The albacore delight came out last, and it was also disappointing because it lacked flavor. The quality of the rolls did not meet my expectations for a restaurant that has 4 1/2 stars. If their rolls didn't taste good, I wouldn't try their sushi. read more

Surprising to find a local sushi restaurant of this caliber in Azusa, near the large industrial parks and warehouses. From the outside, this could be mistaken for a place to grab a quick bowl of ramen, but when we were able to order Kumamoto oysters and uni, we knew the potential for "special" was in play. The gyoza appetizer (sorry, no photo-I almost never eat them) set the tone, thin skinned, delicate and golden brown on one side. The hamachi kama up next was moist and grilled perfectly, just a little small and a little thin. The Kumamoto oysters were excellent, amongst the best I've ever eaten (I've had hundreds of these, my favorite oyster variety!), plump, not too briney, sweet and crisp, not mushy. Very, very fresh and shucked delicately The uni tasted like it was just harvested from Santa Barbara, plump, sweet 0% iodine. Even uni haters would have enjoyed these uni. The sushi, nigiri and sashimi were all similarly fresh, flavorful and expertly prepared. This might be sacrilege, but we just returned from Osaka a few weeks ago and this place was at least equal to the sushi restaurants we visited there. Well worth the trip, enjoy! read more

We moved to Azusa over 7 years ago and one of our first finds was Sushi Sawa. Andy and Angie welcomed us with a warm welcome and amazing food that was unlike any sushi we had ever had. We were fast fans and it was our go to from then on. We craved the fresh fish delivered daily, the home made sauces that uniquely complimented each creation, and when doing the keto diet, we were delighted by the no rice options. We loved the ambiance and friendship we developed with Angie and Andy. Our experience with Andy and Angie was always 5+ stars. Fast forward to today. Due to allergies, I have been unable to enjoy sushi as often as I would like. I avoid it often. Today I realized it was more than 6 months since our last visit with Angie. We arrived and quickly felt the change in ambiance. Gone was Angie's familiar fun welcome. This is not so much a reflection of current owners but my own nostalgia. Our experience today was ok. Sushi was good but no better or worse than others in the area. The down fall was arriving, maybe, later than ideal for the serving staff. We felt as though we Interrupted them. No banter with chef or staff. The part that turned it off for me was after submitting my order (and not modifying after submitting the order) as we neared the end of our orders arriving, I was notified they would not fulfill my full order . Instead were informed of last call and my last roll would not we served. The entire experience was not welcoming, but sterile. I wish the new owners all the success they deserve. Looks pretty good, but not the freshest which is obviously an issue when it comes to sushi. The oysters were the biggest issue. They tasted like the ones you get in a jar at the market seafood section. I wouldn't have minded if they were not advertised as fresh. If they weren't from a jar, than I'm a little worried and hope I don't get sick the rest of the food was edible, but didn't have much flavor. Even the lettuce in my salad was wilted. The dressing was delicious though and best part of the meal was the miso soup. Great flavors. Service was just ok. So me and my fiancé were hungry and we told ourselves we wouldn't eat sushi because of this Netflix documentary we recently seen called "Seaspiracy" along the lines of that you guys gotta watch it ... but after a friend posting sushi last week we gave in this week and decided to try a new sushi spot so they have back patio seating but also indoor and the indoor allows maybe up to 3 families max to seat inside and after they lock up because they've reach maximum occupancy... the lady was so nice the guy was nice as well the food was great and they were so kind to my 11month old as well made him smile and all and played with him every chance she got when she came to our table . I'm gonna give this place a one star in an attempt to lower their average review since I don't think their actual average is a good representation of recent times. The last two times I've ordered take out they say 20 minutes and when I arrive they say 20 more minutes. The second time this happened I just canceled on the spot. Been here multiple times. Small casual restaurant inside. They have a TV so it's a little loud sometimes. There is parking in front and on the side. The best sushi spot nearby. Their food is great every time I've been there. And the food comes out pretty quickly and service is satisfactory. Definitely recommend this place. It has been a few years since we came here and I remember it being so much better. The sushi was beyond sub-par. The quality was not fresh and definitely was being stored above the health department guidelines. As far as atmosphere...it was hot. Service was frustrating. I try to give leeway for new servers and whatnot but our server had a serious communication barrier. I kept my order simple "sushi combo C" And pointed at it on the menu. She had to get somebody to translate for her though. When I asked for tamago sushi, same thing. I told her "egg sushi" and she said okay. Then somebody else came back to tell me they don't carry eggs. I should have known then and left. Now I find myself awaiting my next restroom trip. read more
