I guess "large hot sake" and "large Asahi beer" sound kinda similar, but I would have preferred what I ordered. Oh well... Tonight I tried the newly rebranded sushi restaurant in the old sushi restaurant location. We walked in and thought the decor and feel we're very nice and cute; definitely an improvement. The sushi bar chairs are uncomfortably horrible, even for my fat ass. I waited 40 minutes for a sashimi platter; honestly, I could have had a steak prepared sooner... Or gone fishing, cleaned the fish, and cooked it in a lemon butter sauce sooner than the raw fish I received. There are a lot of things I could do in 40 minutes. You might even get through this Yelp review in 40 minutes! I could wait in line at the DMV, drive to the Queen Mary, or even make two chocolate soufflés. We knew the servers felt our pain (they kept saying, "your food will be up soon." - mind you, we are at the bar. We can see what the chef is preparing and it wasn't our food). They brought free edamame. Oh yay! Not. After waiting for the fish we were disappointed. No taste, and most of it was still frozen with ice in the center. My tastebuds didn't expect this at all and were pretty upset at me. There was some type of seasoning on the tuna that was foul and mysterious. I couldn't get it out of my mouth. My tastebud cried, "Nay, nay!" I just couldn't stomach it... My dinner date ate a couple of the pieces and stopped as well. I've never, never in my life, left 4 pieces of sashimi to waste. We did try the love-love roll, which was tasty for all you low-carb boys and girls. My tastebuds almost woke up. My tastebuds were a little less unhappy with me, but still pretty pissed off from what I did to them before. LOVE their shishito pepper appetizer! and they have several garlic rolls that I'm obsessed with. and I love that the menu shows "No Rice" option rolls for those whom want FISH and less carbs and fillers. and the sashimi --- DO get the seared Tuna and Salmon. This place is a hidden gem. My husband and I have been here over ten times since we first tried it. In fact, we invited friends to join and everyone loves the food, ambiance and service. AMAZING! Today, my husband and I enjoyed our lovely dinner. Needed to get our daughters take out. They love the Japanese sodas, and beef bowls. As always, the service was amazing. His name is Eugene, and told me what was good for the day. He even showed me how fresh the uni was... We got an energy roll and a tiger roll and wtf!? Our rolls arrived cracked and falling apart, there was so much sauce everywhere that it didn't taste like anything but that. We used to come here when Angie was the owner and loved the food and service. We decided to give a try with the new owners since our normal place was really busy and had a 30min wait time and what a disappointment! When we walked in there were only 2 other customers in the entire restaurant. I was there with my 7 year old son and asked the waitress if it was ok for us to sit at the sushi bar and she said yes and walked us over. When we went to pull our chairs out the sushi chef said "he can't sit here" and walked away. I also ordered a rainbow roll, mind you I've ordered this many of times at various locations and it's always been served the same. NOT HERE!!! They drizzled some sort of dressing on it that was very bitter and I couldn't stomach it. I complained about it and she said there's nothing I could do about it. Normally have good experiences here. Came in a moment ago to have dinner, sat in a table in the back. While we were walking back there, I heard one of the sushi chefs (female) comment on our group - there were three of us, and we wanted to sit at our usual table, made for 4-6. Normally sitting back there isn't an issue, and there were plenty of open tables for other big parties. Well, our server went back there and asked us to move to the front table, after we had gotten ourselves comfortable. The table they moved us to was one right near the front door, where the sun hits the building head on. There's a reason we didn't want to sit here - it's warm, 102 out there. I want to stay away from the sun, not right in its path. The most frustrating part of this experience is the fact that there were plenty of open tables available, and we were asked to move in a half empty restaurant. In the time we've been sitting here (about fifteen minutes), no one has walked into the establishment. The table we took was a four seater connected to a two seater - they could easily be taken apart. Instead of just moving that table for two, they asked us to move. Inconvenience the guest for your convenience, sure! That sounds like an excellent business practice. The service here has been gradually declining, but that sushi chef was just the icing on the cake. If you're going to be critical, then at least do it out of earshot from the guests.
