A series of wrong events. Not returning. The gal working at the counter was new (I get that) i don't get why she would be allowed to work with the public yet if she isnt ready. I asked for what is usually called a "philadelphia roll" tempura style, (Salmon cream cheese and avocado) they have a roll (with same ingredients) but could NOT make is tempura style for me? It's called the "Chris roll" here, the same ingredients but not tempura style... ok here's where it gets good .. Low and behold I see a roll called "bagel" (Salmon and cream cheese that is tempura style but contains no Avocado) Offered me that roll and add a buck or two for the avocado to add inside? You're kidding right? Why couldn't they just tempura fry the Chris roll for me? Attitude consisted of like "yawns" from all of the workers, unwelcoming vibe. This is an hour and a half before they were closing... Ordered gyoza, was asked if I wanted steamed or pan fried, ordered steamed and received pan fried.... *Eye roll* The cashier told me they WERE steamed. Look at the pics, they are obviously pan fried. Sushi was "ok"I did eat it. Better places around in my opinion I've never in my life have had the question asked if I want ginger and wasabi?!!!!??? This was asked after the sushi was placed in front of me.... with sushi??! Its a given. BOGO sushi (the cashier reminded me) but I was first charged full price? They reversed the charge and took the extra off but sheesh!!! Meh, unprofessional and not giving me what I asked for when fully capable said it all... Atmosphere is like a to- go kind of spot.

The food is fresh. It tastes great, and served by very nice people. Generous with the shrimp sauce. It is the best $5 lunch in town. Never takes long but blows away a fast food lunch. Seating is limited. Thank goodness Donatos failed so these guys could move in.

Pretty happy with this place. Obviously not the fanciest sushi or place but definitely good enough. They have great daily specials. M/W/F But one get one 50% off. T/Th/Sat buy one get one FREE. There are several vegetarian and cooked sushi options, for those who aren't fans of raw fish. My ONION RING sushi roll was great. The rice was a tiny bit mushy but pretty much on par with most places I've eaten sushi. The onions were crunchy and the price was great ($5 per roll full price - less with discount). So far, I'm a fan.

I stumbled on Sushi Star over 4 years ago. I had a gift card to use at a small business and I was driving around on lunch trying to figure out what I wanted to eat. I just happened to see Sushi Star (Huntersville) and walked in. While I was waiting on my food, I realized they had just opened up for business that day. The lunch price was so amazing that I thought the quality of the food would be lacking. But it wasn't & I've been hooked ever since. I got a new job a year or so later in Matthews. Again, I was riding around looking for lunch and to my surprise they were building a new Sushi Star right by my new office. I was so happy. The food and customer service is great, no matter the location. They have a lifelong customer in me!

We've been regulars at the Huntersville Sushi Star for a while, and we had no idea this location existed! For us, the best thing about Sushi Star is the Buy One Get One roll days, so we were stoked when we found out that this location alternates those days with the Huntersville location. For those who are looking to get some bogo action: Huntersville does the special on Wednesday and Friday, and Matthews does it on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. If you've been to the other Sushi Star, this one won't surprise you, but that's a good thing. Their sushi is great, and the prices on bogo days are fantastic too. We've been a few times to this location and it's always been super chill. Not a huge crowd, and pretty quiet. A great place to get away to after work and clear your mind a bit with some solid sushi. I've also heard their hibachi is money, but I've only ever had the sushi so I can't speak to that myself.

Tuna rolls were good quality and fresh

I absolutely love the Sushi Star in Huntersville so I was very excited to learn that there was a location closer to me! I also was excited to find out that their buy one get one free sushi deal is Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday, which alternates with the one in Huntersville. I just got two tuna rolls, but the quality was very good and the fish seemed fresh. The space is also a bit bigger than the Huntersville location, but the chairs aren't as comfy. I'm excited to try their hibachi next time!

    Teriyaki chicken and shrimp

Sushi star is a great addition to the hibachi world in this part of town , the teriyaki chicken and shrimp was delicious and shrimp sauce not really needed but it was nice to have . I wish this location had online ordering like the Huntersville location, but I suppose that will come with time . The portion size is perfect , not an abundance of rice (scratch that , just got teriyaki chicken again, um why soooooooooo much rice 11/14/16) with no stir fry, it's actually equal quantities all the way around . I was a little disappointed with my spicy tuna roll , it lacked flavor and creativity , I don't think I'll be coming here for the sushi, but the main dishes are a winner .

Was pleased after trying Sushi Star for the first time. They have a huge menu of sushi roll options...they literally have a huge 8 foot tall menu by the register! Right now they're running a special buy one roll get one free. We tried the Wolfpack roll (good spicy) and the Rolling Stone. Both were tasty! We also shared a chicken teriyaki dinner. Like any good Sushi restaurant, they had plenty of the coveted Yum Yum sauce. I thought prices were very affordable (especially with the buy one, get one). There isn't a ton of seats in the restaurant, so takeout is probably ideal. Staff was friendly and glad to give advice on options.

Hibachi chicken no rice. Zucchini had a very sandy texture. Looked good, couldn't eat it!

Let me first say I do not like sushi. My husband loves it though, and I do like hibachi so we tried Sushi Star. The first time we went, I liked my hibachi chicken and that this place is very convenient. Restaurants tend to turn over in this strip so I was glad to see a new one in the area. I want a few to stick around. My husband wasn't as crazy about his order (sushi). It looked like a hot mess & he commented that part of the appeal for him is that sushi is so visually appealing. He wasn't crazy about the taste either. The second time I went and wow-what a difference. I called & ordered the "no rice" hibachi chicken + a side of rice at 7:15. They said it would be 15 minutes so I arrived, paid and waited and waited and waited. They apparently don't "take" the order until paid. I paid at 7:36 and didn't get my food until 8. Everyone waiting was so mad that I almost felt sorry for the people working there. There were 4 in line so it wasn't packed or anything. OH the food! I took a bite of zucchini - it looked great. It felt & sounded like it had been coated in sand. I've never experienced such a jarring sensation (because I don't eat sand). I tried to eat a few more bites but gave up & threw it away. There are so many good, quick sushi and hibachi places in this area that there's no need for the long wait times for mediocre food at Sushi Star - This place won't last.

My boyfriend and I went for lunch and we couldn't believe it was the same owners as the huntersville location. Sushi star has the BEST sushi in charlotte hands down!! I'm beyond excited that's there's a closer location to where I live! If you go and order your food comes out very quickly and it's made to order. Which I love!! We went during their buy one get one free and we went crazy! Lol we ordered the Jenny roll, Tall Paul roll, huntersville roll, and the North Carolina roll. The last two are my favorites! They really do fill you up and for the price it's even better. We got our food pretty fast and they were the sweetest people. They make sure you enjoyed your food and want to make your experience the best which it was! I loved it! We will definitely be back.

    Spicy Tuna and Fall Season
    Andrea W.

Just tried Sushi Star for lunch. I ordered the spicy tuna roll and the Fall Season roll which had shrimp tempura, avocado, cream cheese, bacon and topped with shredded crab. I enjoyed the Fall Season roll. It was very spicy which I love and had a nice smoky bacon flavor to it. I was disappointed with the spicy tuna, which is always my favorite. They topped it with two types of sauces and one had a sweeter taste to it and I didn't like it. The interior of the restaurant is small but cute. There were a few people in there enjoying lunch, but to me, it seems more like a takeout place. Everyone was friendly and the wait for my order was pretty minimal. They had a buy one get one free sushi special for their grand opening so you might want to check it out while that is going on. I will definitely go here again and try something different.

There were a few worthy entrants, but after reading reviews and looking at photos, I decided Red Sea would be the place I go to experience these new flavors. Located along Monroe Rd in a stand-alone building painted green and blue, the restaurant definitely appears a bit dated but to me that adds to the charm. I don't think any everything to be shiny and new, I'll go for tried and true when it comes to local restaurants. I went in on a weekday between lunch and dinner, so it was pretty quiet, but I noticed in addition to a fine looking bar, they have a small stage which suggests they sometimes host musical acts. I'd love to come back during one of their busy periods so I can get a better sense of the vibe, but on this particular day I was there solely for the food. The only thing I knew going into this experience is that Ethiopian food is typically served on a large piece of bread which I've come to learn is called injerna. The bread is a sourdough and has a spongy texture. Now I wanted to try different things so I got a combo platter that came with chicken, lamb, veggies, and a hard boiled egg as well. When they serve it, it comes with another piece of injerna and the idea is that you use the second one to tear away pieces and pick up your food with it. I confess that I tried my best to eat it the authentic way, but eventually I found myself getting frustrated and asked for a fork. Like chopsticks I'm sure it takes practice. The platter is a was massive, an absolute feast that could easily feed two people. I loved it, but eventually had to get a to go box. It was ambitious to take that on by myself. Overall my first experience has me hooked and I want to try more. I can't speak to the authenticity, but people in the city seem to rate this place very highly so I think that speaks for itself.

Red Sea provided exactly the type of experience I wanted, including decor, atmosphere, friendliness, and of course the food. In the background, behind a door on the side of the restaurant, there was a second area where you could hear people playing snooker. At one point in the evening, the woman who seated and served us also roasted coffee beans at a little station in the corner, then she walked around so that the smell penetrated the entire restaurant like incense. What a cool thing, and something I've never experienced at any other Ethiopian restaurant previously. It's such a simple thing, you'd think it would be more common. The food was, of course, delicious. You could order individual foods or combo platters, and the combo platters were very well explained. This was one of the few Ethiopian restaurants I've visited which included beets on the menu both in the vegetable platter and as a side. Each person gets one gigantic piece of injera, so little worry of running out (there is a charge for extra). Tej is available by the bottle and glass, and several brands of beer are available. I would classify Red Sea as a hidden gem and definitely a place to dine.

At first the young lady on the phone didn't want to take the order. After a little coaxing, she did. My girlfriend ordered veggie soup with beef, a meat pie and jollof. On the phone, at the end, the girl repeated back the order, but kept saying Egusi soup, which we kept clarifying back to veggie. We showed up, paid the money and got out food. When we checked it, it was egusi soup not veggie. We called that out and the girl stuck her head in the window and said she was the one we talked to and we were wrong, we had in fact ordered egusi soup. We did not. She promised she wouldn't make it right and invited the person who was out front to come back and make it himself. He excused himself and went back there. After not very long, her attitude had changed and she was calm and not so spicy. I think I know why... I have never ever EVER had food so salty. It was the worst food I've had that I can remember. Each dish (except the meat pie) was over salted. I'm pretty sure the young girl did it for revenge. Over salted jollof, over salted chicken, over salted plantains (didn't think that was possible), over salted veggie soup. Meat pie (pre-made) wasn't over salted - but was mostly dough and not much beef. Just terrible. I would hope those flavors are not the norm. If so, please know that good Nigerian food is not that salty. If the young lady did it on purpose, man - reconsider that hire.
