The food is best sushi in the triangle. There is an amazing menu with a lot of options. The cucumber roll is my second favorite thing to eat. The other option is the pork dumpling. Excellent taste. The attention is always top notch. They're always available for your requests and are very polite. The hot sake is on special on Thursdays! And it is a very good pre-meal drink.

I give Sushi Suyu 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. If this restaurant was located in a bigger metropolitan area, like Atlanta, I'd give it a solid 3 ("OK"). For the Triangle, it's good, but not great like M Sushi in Durham and Sushi Mon in Raleigh. That said, I don't regret making the 25-minute drive from Chapel Hill to Apex to try it. Sushi Suyu is located in historic downtown Apex. The town is lucky to have this place. If it wasn't for this restaurant, I'm not sure my wife, friend, and I would've ever "gone out" in Apex. My friend, who's lived in Raleigh for many years, had never been to Apex until we dined here. The downtown area is small and quaint, what you'd expect of an old North Carolina town. The commercial part spans only a couple blocks. It's nice to walk around. Sushi Suyu shares a building and small parking lot with other businesses. The lot only has nine spaces. There is, however, plenty of free parking down adjacent Templeton St and around the corner, in the back, on Temple St. We parked for free in the public parking lot across the street, at N Salem St and Seaboard St, next to the fire station. We visited on a Monday around 6:15pm. The place was busy when we arrived. At one point, I think every table was taken and one or two parties had to wait. At the time of our visit, the restaurant catered to walk-ins and accepted a very limited number of reservations. We were walk-ins and were seated immediately. The restaurant isn't huge, but it's spacious enough. An outdoor, umbrella-covered, string-lit patio is available when weather permits. Inside, there's a small five-seat sushi bar in the back. The dining room is partitioned into a few different spaces. The interior design is simple and clean-looking. Tables are placed closely together. The atmosphere is casual. I found out about Sushi Suyu after seeing one of my Instagram friends' stories with the restaurant's "sushi ladder." "Sushi ladder" is how it was described to me. They're actually more like "sushi stairs." It's gimmicky, but it works for the business because it looks great on social media and draws new people in (like me). On the menu, it's called the Nigiri Moriawase (assorted nigiri) 10-piece chef's choice platter ($32). The 10 pieces I got were tuna, salmon, beet salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, amberjack, scallop, squid, surf clam, and eel. Surf clam was the only thing I didn't see on the regular menu. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed with my 10-piece because it didn't look as good as the other platters I'd seen on Instagram and Yelp. First, my platter only had five steps instead of six or even 10. Yeah, I know, a trivial thing, but it's part of the fun of ordering this dish. More importantly, the pieces of nigiri I received weren't as high-quality as the ones I'd seen online. For example, most of the pieces I got were plain while the ones I'd seen online had been cut and/or dressed up in particular ways, with way more care and attention to detail. I'm fine with getting "plain" nigiri, but even these plain nigiri - such as the most basic kinds, like tuna and salmon - were simply cheaper quality. Finally, the accouterments I received were less than I expected. Online, I saw wasabi paste, pickled ginger, kizami wasabi, and lime or lemon. All I got was the standard wasabi paste and pickled ginger. Based on pictures I'd seen, including on Sushi Suyu's official Instagram page, I expected the nigiri to be higher-end, but what I actually received was more run-of-the-mill quality. Maybe the night of our visit, the B team was in or maybe the restaurant has changed to using cheaper-quality sushi, I don't know. Anyway, I don't mean to criticize too much. I still enjoyed it. For Apex, this is good. My wife and friend also enjoyed a variety of nigiri, which included a-la-carte orders (e.g., red snapper and amberjack, 2 pieces for $9) and the 6-piece chef's choice platter ($20). If you're wondering what "beet salmon" is, it's beetroot-cured salmon. I was told they cure it in-house. Other items we ordered included Truffle Salmon Carpaccio (seared salmon, fried onions, tobiko, truffle oil, soy mustard, apple aioli; $15), a Trio Plate (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, fried onions, tobiko, apple aioli, soy mustard; $18), Tempura Shrimp ($11) with assorted tempura vegetables, Sweet Spicy Edamame ($6), pan-fried pork Dumplings (6 for $9), a Spicy Tuna Classic Roll ($7), and a Hamachi Fever roll (shrimp tempura, avocado on the inside, seared yellowtail, microgreens, garlic chips, Sriracha aioli, sweet soy on top; $16). Overall, everything was tasty and beautifully presented. They generally do a nice job with the presentation here. Of these other items we ordered, my favorites were the Truffle Salmon Carpaccio and the Trio Plate, both of which were very similar. We also got a K-Pancake with Ice Cream ($9) for dessert. I highly recommend it. It was delicious. Our server was Jess and she was fantastic. Nolan was great too. Sushi Suyu opened in May 2022.

Sushi Suyu is a very solid sushi place with great ambiance and service. The food comes out quickly and the fish tastes very fresh. Parking is a bit more difficult so you might need to look around downtown Apex to find a spot. Ordered the sashimi and two specialty rolls. The sashimi was great, the selection was pretty standard aside from the beet-infused salmon. It had a subtle citric taste which was very interesting and different from your normal salmon taste. The specialty rolls were good, but I needed to take the jalapeno off in order to fully taste the roll. I felt like the spice was overwhelming the taste of the other ingredients. Overall great spot to come out to for a nice meal, will be back to try out heir other rolls.

Wow, Sushi Suyu was a wonderful experience. Attentive staff, chill but upscale ambiance, and terrific sushi. We ordered the 16 piece sashimi and two spicy rolls: Dynamite salmon and the yellow pepper roll. The sashimi was some of the freshest sashimi I've tasted here in NC, and beautifully plated. The rolls were unique and delicious -- I do recommend only ordering one spicy roll though, as the spice became a bit overpowering at times. Looking forward to coming back and trying more rolls!

10pc moriawase - hard to say it is fresh for raw/minimally processed ones

Visited Sushi Suyu on a Wednesday night, hoping this would turn into another sushi gem in triangle area, but the quality was on disappointing side. 10pc moriawase got a catching presentation, but half of them was not good, maybe fair comparing to grocery store quality, just not I would expect from a restaurant - namely the complete raw or minimally processed ones, salmon, amber jack, yellowtail, red snapper and scallop. The tuna (akami) was the only raw fish sushi that tasted ok. Eel, seared squid, seared salmon, surf clam that were processed were good. Made me wonder if Wednesday was the last day before restocked. The experience may be better if they decided to processed all raw fish. I then decided to give it another try ordering the amaebi (sweet shrimp) and salmon roe...yuzu soy on amaebi was overpowering but it helped masked undesired taste; salmon roe tasted ok, not plump. Overall I would not go back for traditional sushi, maybe its rolls and other dishes are good. The restaurant sits in the nice downtown and its wasabi was freshly made. If one is not picky, it may be a good choice. They charge 3% credit card fee, not sure if this is a standard for dinning in triangle now.

I have had better sushi. But I haven't had a better dessert at a sushi place. Let's backtrack. When I told the guys at Common Grounds I was heading out to Osha for sushi, they instead recommended I try the Asian fusion spot down the street. Always down for a new experience, I took the bait. Sushi restaurant with a Korean spin. As they close early to prepare for dinner, I high-tailed it. Per the website, they still accept guests 20 minutes before closing, fyi. The entrance is the door off Salem Street. I spoke with the hostess and server at length and they were really cool. It's an average enough interior with a clean restroom. I ordered the Bulgogi Lunch Box, with dumplings and the ice cream pancake for dessert. The wait was about ten minutes. The Lunch Box was alright; with tempura, rice and the "fire meat." As I said, I've had better sushi. Not gonna dog them, just pointing it out. And I never blame Asian restaurants for calling horseradish "wasabi," because the real stuff is hard to come by. I do, however, judge them for pink ginger. That's because you don't know what you're getting - color via the pickling or just plain dyed. I would rather not have to wonder. Suyu made me wonder. The dumplings were flavorful and delicious. Suyu has a limited duo of dessert options. As I've had mochi thousands of times, I ordered the ice cream pancake. Once again, their choices are very limited. AND, SO WHAT?!?! Holy cats! When you've got the pancake, you don't need other desserts! This was fantastic. With some kind of chocolate glaze inside the pastry, it was mouth-pleasing culinary genius. Always get it. Always ignore the mochi. Always win. A.

This was my 2nd time at Sushi Suyu. I really enjoyed it both times. The service is great! There are plenty of sake, wine, and beer options! We ordered the salmon carpaccio. It was delicious! We also ordered the Sassy Girl roll and a bunch of different nigiris. I really liked the roll, my husband was not a fan. We were hoping to get a roll with scallops in them but didn't see any. The nigiris were good- some pieces were a little dry, but still good. There is outdoor seating which we'll probably check out next time we stop by.

Best Sushi in the Apex Cary area! I would recommend getting there early when it first opens because it does fill up quickly. The inside is not very big. Also, I would say to park by scratch kitchen because it's a bigger lot and a really short walk over. The service is amazing and it's one of the few sushi places that pack the rolls with fish. Two rolls is definitely a full meal. They also have amazing lunch specials! There is no BOGO like other places but they have WAY better quality here.

I'm not sure if it's a blessing or a tragedy how far Sushi Suyu is from me- I didn't realize it had been a whole year since I last had it! (so probably a tragedy D:) But kudos for being exactly how I remembered it; absolutely amazing. The entire experience is great from the service to the food. To be honest I sometimes feel out of place at fancy sushi joints, but def not here. The staff is all so wonderful, they make you feel welcome and comfortable; they're fun too! And of course the food is *chef's kiss* We ordered mainly rolls this time and wow talk about perfectly proportioned rolls; I want to try all of the options off the menu! They've created the best rolls in terms of texture, flavor pairings, rice to ingredients proportions, all around. Don't forget to leave room for dessert because the Korean pancake dessert is out of this world. It's perfectly flaky and crispy, paired with the cold creamy vanilla ice cream that creates a wonderful experience in your mouth that you'll be thinking about for awhile.

Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Price: $$ I have visited Sushi SUYU twice with my family, originally from Dallas. During our 1st visit, we were astonished by how delicious the sushi was. Everything was so fresh, and the proportion of fish to rice was perfect. However, our 2nd visit was not like our first experience. The main difference was the sushi rice. It was semi-mushy and had a somewhat floral/sweet scent to it, which was very off-putting. We could not properly enjoy the nigiri or sushi rolls. In terms of food, we chose the following items over the course of 2 visits: * (2/5) Tuna Nacho It was decent but not memorable, especially considering the price. * (4/5) SUYU Trio We like the variety of fish used to top the rolls: tuna, salmon, yellowtail. The Japanese dressing goes well with it too. * (4/5) Road Trip Love the spice! It has spicy tuna inside and spicy salmon on top. * (5/5) Nigiri 10pcs We love the 10pcs nigiri staircase. It has an eye-catching presentation, and the fish has been consistently tasty. I would recommend it over the 6pcs nigiri. * (5/5) Panko Soft-shell Crab The crab is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. We enjoyed the variety of vegetable tempura that was included underneath. All fried well (not too heavily coated). * (4/5) Shrimp Tempura Roll It's just as good as other shrimp tempura rolls. * (5/5) Salmon Roll They don't skimp on the salmon used in the roll, which is why I bumped from a 4 to a 5. Much appreciated. Service is consistently attentive and quick. We will likely try again in the further future. Maybe our 2nd visit was a one-off experience.

Favorite sushi place in the area so far!!! We're roll gremlins, so my review is entirely based on that. Our favorite rolls we tried were the Creamy yellowtail, Dynamite salmon, and the Suyu trio. Garlic edamame was bomb, and they did not miss with the sauce. Got the panko crusted crab, and the tempura fry job was FIRE! Puffy and flavorful - a delight. My partners favorite beer, Hitachino Nest, was here too, a rare find and a good indicator. This spot is nestled along Salem Street, a great spot to walk down and enjoy a romantic date night or dinner with friends. This spot sports indoor and outdoor seating with cozy vibes. Parking can be hard (expected of the area), but most often a parking spot can be found somewhere behind the store. Great service and friendly staff as well! read more

Disappointing trip to this neighborhood sushi place. Website (and door) state that lunch is served until 2:00 p.m. Arrived at 1:39pm, with plenty of time, only to be perfunctorily told "sorry, we stop seating at 1:40." If you won't seat anyone that comes after a certain time, then it should be posted on the website. read more

Our favorites: soy garlic chicken, hotel California, party tunight, salmon poke, and sassy girl, their shrimp tempura is off the hook., heck even the simplest order of edamame is so perfectly steamed . Staff are attentive and friendly. The place is cute and cozy, but it could be really tight in there esp. every Friday and Saturday night. We've been trying to sit at the sushi bar but it's always occupied everytime we go, bummer. read more

Went with a reservation with a small group of friends. Service was good, and probably their strongest point. No issues there. We started with wasabi and pork and veggie dumplings. The wasabi was ok, the dumplings didn't taste very good. Minimal flavor and definitely not anything compared to other dumplings I've tried in the area. For my main course I got shrimp tempura rolls. They were ok, and as far as rolls go, those are hard to mess up. Not a lot of flavor and again, easy to order somewhere else. With beer and wine as the only options and no cocktails, I probably won't be back. Service good, food very mediocre. read more

I've visited a couple times, and the food is always consistent and delicious. It's a very busy place so, the atmosphere has been pretty loud and the servers seem hectic and sometimes the orders aren't accurate. Not a place for a quiet meal. Overall it's good quality food and it's very clean, but not budget friendly. read more

Sushi Suyu latest experience not pleasant. The past Friday we went to Sushi Suyu and had to wait outside for 40 minutes for a table. While it was cold waiting we understood it was a Friday and they were busy. We patiently waited and were next to be seated only to get bumped to a party of 4 that were 3 behind us in the queue. The hostess told us they would not put us at the empty table of 4 and we would have to continue to wait for a table of 2. Talked to the "manager " and said they would not seat a couple next in line for a table of 4 . After prompting he offered a free appetizer but at the point the dinner was ruined and we will not be returning. Obviously putting a revenue grab instead of the customer. read more

I had the Philadelphia roll, Apex roll, & Spicy Salmon Poke Salad - everything was fresh & delicious. The Apex roll was my favorite! I needed to plug in my laptop & work a bit while I ate. This was the best sushi I've had since moving to North Carolina in 2018. I took my daughter here tonight (Jan 2023), and the ambiance was very nice. It's a small restaurant with limited seating, but it's honestly perfect in comparison to some large restaurants. We sat at the sushi bar and our sushi chefs and server were all very nice and very attentive. The food came out fast, we ordered miso soup which was very good, and we followed that with the panko soft shell crab and tempura vegetable! Bothe we're so good, and I loved the fact that they had mushroom, asparagus, and sweet potatoes in the vegetables. They definitely aren't taking the cheap route in comparison to other places I've eaten. We ordered four sushi rolls of the Specialty Rolls section, and all of them were very good. Again, some of, if not, the best I've had since moving here. I'm from Florida and am Japanese so we grew up with sushi, plus I've had great sushi from chefs in Vail, Las Vegas, Alaska, Hawaii, Texas and California in places that I've lived. We scarfed the sushi down so fast, that we didn't get any pictures. It was so good, I ended up getting a couple orders of Nigiri, scallops and eel. Those sealed the deal. We each shared this, and my 12-year-old daughter thought they were awesome! She has a slightly advanced palate, but honestly the food is so good that she loved everything we ordered. This is my new favorite spot! So full, but we had to have dessert because the food was so good. We ordered the K-Pancake and Ice Cream. That lasted about 45-seconds, and I'll probably order it every time we go. I give this place 5-stars, and recommend to anyone looking for sushi. From the taste to the friendliness of the staff, everything about the restaurant is amazing! read more

We came here for a weekday lunch and were promptly seated. The restaurant was about half full on this day and the decor was simple and clean. I ordered the bulgogi lunch box special, and was impressed by quite a large quantity of food. In addition to the bulgogi with rice, I enjoyed various cuts of sashimi, tempura, and a sushi roll. Overall, the food left me both full and quite satisfied, and I'll definitely be back. read more

We were in town for a wedding I was in and we had some time to waste before we could check into our hotel. The idea was to find good local sushi with a nice comfy vibe. This place was exactly that! Not only were the rolls super fresh and unique, but the flavors were incredible. The lunch special (it was a Friday) was also fabulous. It was any 2 special rolls for $23 (such a STEAL) and we ended up ordering some pork gyoza on the side which was a tasty start. One of the rolls had an apple aioli on top and it was SO tasty. Such a new and unique flavor. Another roll had tuna with TRUFFLE oil - another great combo. I also posted a picture of the rolls on my Instagram story and everyone from back at home were commenting on how amazing the sushi looked. Will definitely go back here if we're ever in town again! read more

Second visit to Suyu. Ordered the Road Trip and Creamy Yellowtail. Previously ordered T&T and a salmon hand roll. So far, everything has been delicious. Excellent presentation. Attentive service. New flavors, ie yuzu citrus and trufle oil used on the rolls. Quite refreshing. Wasabi is freshly grated, not a paste. Worth a visit. read more

Came here for dinner last weekend and it's packed. The place is kind of small and lucky they still had table for 2. My boyfriend doesn't eat raw so i tried to find something for him. Not too much options, so i picked the spicy chicken with a side of sushi rice. I tried 2 rolls Papa Salmon and Sassy Girl. Seared spicy tuna on the Sassy Girl was so good that gave the smoke flavor. Papa Salmon also good but the cheese sauce made the flavor off, prefer without it or maybe would be better with just spicy mayo. Overall the food and service was great. And the food came out fast even it's busy, as if they knew that we're hungry! Will come back to try other sushi rolls read more

Had the creamy yellowtail and yellow pepper rolls, and salmon sashimi on the side. Both rolls were fresh and tasty but as with all sushi, I will revise this by tomorrow if it rebels on me. I thought the fish portions for all were too small for the price. read more

Ordered sushi to go. We tried the Beverly Eels, Creamy Yellowtail, Salmon & Tuna nigiri and Dumplings. Overall, it was good but if I have to compare it to that other Sushi restaurant there in Apex( near the gas station-you know which restaurant it is ) I will give this restaurant a 7/10 score. First timer here. The ambiance is fancy-casual. My experience was during lunch hours. It was not too crowded but a little more noisy than I expected, but there was 2 groups of at least 6 there which contributed to the noise level. They serve water in a wine type glass cup which was nice. No fancy napkins. They have a small selection of wine, sake and local beers. There were lots of staff available so there was no waiting for any service needs. I decided to try the lunch box since it had a little bit of pieces of things I enjoy. Stopped in on the weekend for a late dinner. It's a smaller but cozy place in a shared building but does also have additional outdoor seating. There's limited parking in the front but plenty more parking behind the building. Was pretty busy even we arrived but luckily they had a table for two available and were seated right away. Service was prompt, friendly and attentive. Nice selection of specialty rolls and also have all your standard classic rolls as well as different appetizers. Unfortunately they were out of toro when we were there but everything we had there was delicious. We especially enjoyed the truffle salmon carpaccio appetizer--so much so that we added on an additional order. If you're looking for a nice little sushi joint, would definitely recommend. read more

This is our Sushi spot for a weekly visit. Very creative and good sushi and sashimi, and some of the appetizers like KFC are also great to try. The best deal is their lunch which you can get a great amount of food or choose from the menu for fancy rolls that they serve during dinner at a saving. Some of our favorite rolls: Suyu Trio, Beverly Eel, Apex, Creamy Yellowtail, Raging Bull Give them a try, this is among the best sushi spots in the RTP area. read more

It wasn't too busy at ~10:30 AM but judging from the number of people walking around, I'm sure it gets way busier at peak hours. Anyway, I ordered the steak salad for myself and it arrived promptly. It was really, really good! Steak was maybe not medium rare as requested, but it tasted great, and all of the components of the salad really worked together. The beer menu had good variety but it was a little early for me so I took a pass on that :) The server was attentive throughout my meal and did an excellent job. Overall, I really enjoyed Scratch and would definitely come back!

We ordered the Chicago Dog, the Reuben Sandwich, and finished things off with a cannolo (yes, the singular form of cannoli). The Chicago Dog was delicious and loaded with flavor, although I have to admit the toxic-green relish initially threw me off a bit (see pic). Once I got past the visual shock, it was actually a fantastic hot dog that stayed true to its Chicago roots. The real star, though, was the Reuben Sandwich. At around $15, it was absolutely worth every penny. Generously stacked, perfectly toasted, and packed with tender meat, melty Swiss, tangy sauerkraut, and just the right amount of dressing. The cannolo was the perfect sweet ending to the meal -- crisp shell, creamy filling, and not overly sweet. What really stood out was how friendly everyone was. We were given water as soon as we sat and our drink order was taken quickly. The food itself is hit or miss. The plain pizza was great! Almost like a NY style pizza but not quite. We ordered the Mediterranean XL pie who can was just okay. We also ordered garlic knots which were amazing and honestly my favorite thing! The food did come out pretty quick considering.
