Going to be honest...i checked this place out because the online menu showed everything was like half off. Which I know is normally never a good sign ...but the reviews I saw, Said the food was good. So I went...it was not half off when i got there ...the girls that work there are not the warmest and friendliest. On the verge of being rude. The place was empty, they were prompt. I got the Godzilla roll and the sushi time roll, very yummy...I also ordered the BBQ squid...not AT ALL what I expected. I thought it would be cut up squid on a plate, maybe skewered...grilled with that Smokey flavor and glazed with some Japanese version of BBQ sauce. I stopped in here last week for lunch. Lunch specials we're a great deal but since I had never been here before I opted to get 2 rolls instead of 3. Honestly I could always eat three rolls. I was excited to see they had all of my favorites. The service was friendly and quick but I'm afraid that's where the good ends. I got a mango avocado roll. The mango was tasteless. And although the avocado was cut in nice big chunks they were warm. They should never be warm. Normally this is my absolute favorite roll and I didn't even finish it because it was making me feel sick. The other roll I got had shrimp that was rubbery. And the rice was not sushi rice it was cheap rice. Needless to say I did not enjoy my lunch and when I got home I had a serious stomach ache. I was excited to see that this place is a BYOB, with the liquor store being in the same area. However when I asked the guy in the store, if this place had decent sushi. He said it's not bad, BUT the service is really bad. Well he wasn't kidding, the woman makes you feel like, she's being forced to serve you. The sushi was okay at best. Our go-to half off delicious sushi place used to be U-Yee, but this place has just replaced it because it is half off take out sushi all the time (including special rolls), and much closer to home. So we decided to drive down to Cranford and found Sushi Time 898.At first I was concerned because there was only one other table in the restaurant. Well we ordered shumai and negamaki for starters then my wife order some specialty rols and I order three standard rolls ( spicy tune, eel cucumber and snow crab) All were very fresh and tasty. I really was very pleased and by the time we left there were more tables starting to fill the place. We ordered two generous lunch special entres with drinks and the bill totaled less than $20.00. Everything was really good and you get a great value for your money. It's fair to question the quality and freshness of a restaurant that offers a stand alone menu in addition to an all you can eat option. I will say, the sushi rolls and dishes did not disappoint. The staff was extremely attentive (and also very tolerant of a 2 year old who at times might like yelling). The hostess was busy with her cell phone and "greeted" us by holding up her finger and continuing what she was doing. Another woman eventually came over to seat us. She ended up taking our order but only entered two out of the three rolls my husband ordered into the system. We had to request water twice, and it wasn't refilled during our meal even though we ran out. The first woman took my soup away without asking and I still had half a bowl left. AWFUL SERVICE. I always used to go there and eat, especially because of the good prices but lately they have been trying to push this "minimum limit" of each person spending 10 dollars that never existed before. I've been eating in this place for over a year and they NEVER said anything about minimum charges. The last time I went, they waited until me and a couple friends sat on the table, as I finished ordering they told me it was not possible to order that because it would not total $10. We all decided to pay together so we would only order the necessary, but the server said that it would not be allowed because EACH PERSON had to pay $10 worth of food. The servers do not treat the clients well and create an awkward atmosphere, especially when they keep bringing up how you have to pay this or that. Not going back again anytime soon. I was excited to try this restaurant since the reviews were pretty decent. I called the restaurant to make sure that they delivered to Roselle Park and was assured by the woman answering the phone. The delivery came in 40 minutes as indicated and once I sent the delivery guy and signed my receipt he completely caught me off guard. He said " next time we not Deliver here, it's too far!" I said excuse me? He repeated himself and then I informed him that it was confirmed they do. Cranford is the next town over from here. He said it's too busy to come here and next time he won't deliver it. I did contact the restaurant and spoke with the woman who took my order and she was extremely apologetic. Too bad, they lost my business with his lack of customer service skills. Remember, customer service and being friendly will take you a long way and you a possible returning customer because of your delivery guy. read more

What was once my favorite place to eat has now become a place where I will not want to ever return to again. The establishment served a group of 9 of us over an hour after we supplied our request for sushi. However, all the other customers there who arrived at the same time and after us received their sushi and were able to pay BEFORE we even got a plate of sushi. It is tough to outright label a place as having racist motives in how they deal with customers, but it is hard to ignore that the white and Asian customers received treatment and on point service while the black and Hispanic group had to wait over an hour to receive sushi, or wait a long time before we receive refill on our water, or barely even checked on to see if we were ok. It's sad to sit in a restaurant and see others served properly while your own group is left waiting to be served as if we were not important in their eyes. read more

Great Japanese place. Menu has a variety of sushi, sashimi, rolls, and entrees that will please any diner looking for good Japanese. Buffet option (not sure if it's good everyday) is not your traditional buffet where the food just sits there for anyone to touch. You are actually given a card to check off what you wish to eat. Waiter then brings it to the sushi bar and/or kitchen where your selections are freshly prepared. We tasted at least 15 different things from the menu and enjoyed them all. This place is great! It is fresh and clean. My Mom and I came for a nice quiet lunch and it was slow but so worth the wait. The filet mignon roll is my favorite and you can't beat $20 for all you can eat fresh sushi. I didn't even know until my 3rd time that you could also order some teriyaki dishes. If you are thinking you can go to a regular buffet for $10 and just eat the sushi there, you are wrong, it is garbage to what you get here. This is better than Mizu Sushi in Cranford too. I ordered it last week and it isn't as good as Sushi Time 898. Some guy from Cranford raved about Mizu so I gave it a try. Mizu's food is average and the salmon was fresh but not the avacado and their tempura was VERY greasy. Sushi Time 898 also offers half price sushi takeout. It's great for a quick bite. I have been coming here for the last year or so. My BF and I started coming here when he lived in Cranford upon his recommendation. The fish is always fresh and the wait staff is very friendly. They never give us a hard time about ordering a lot of food, as my boyfriend can eat!! The first time I went, I was skeptical based on some of the yelp reviews, but I have yet to be disappointed.
