We were looking for an authentic Japanese spot in Midtown East and decided to try Tsushima. It's an authentic Japanese place with a huge menu selection, especially their appetizers and various Japanese dishes. I came with a group of 8, and we ordered a variety of appetizers and sushi sets to share. We selected 8-10 appetizers, ordering double portions for about half of them, including Kani (Crab) Cream Croquette, Edamame Tempura, Goya Chanpuru and Grilled Shishamo. For sushi, we chose 6 sets (Moriawase, which included pieces of sushi and rolls). The pieces were quite small and easy to eat. They had a nice dessert menu, too, so most of us ordered one each. Matcha Tiramisu and Hojicha Cream Brûlée were popular choices. At the end of our meal, they served us hot tea, which was a nice touch. Looking forward to dining again to try more dishes. read more

I loved this sushi spot!!!!! They had the cute little tables on the floor where you have to take your shoes off to sit. That was such a cool vibe! The service was great and everyone was so nice. The food was also obviously amazing. They had such a range of foods from noodles and rices, to sushi & omakase to fried foods and cooked appetizers. Had a good dinner at this spot. They have a decent menu and I enjoyed it. I had the horse and Japanese mackerel sashimi. The horse ( it's not horse) mackerel was not my favorite. The Japanese mackerel was good, but not spectacular. The best thing I had was the sardine sashimi. Otherwise, the happy hour is worthwhile including house saki and Japanese whiskey. A colleague wanted me to go to Sugar Fish with her for some time so we walked about 10 blocks... alas, the wait at noon was too long for lunch. So we walked 10 blocks back towards Grand Central and spotted Tsushima. We both had been there before but it had been at least three years because of pandemic. So it was a "fresh" experience so to speak. Walking in, we noticed that there weren't many people. We speculated that's because the regulars have not been asked back to their offices. Haha. We also noticed right away that the room was stuffy. If the AC was on we did not feel it. After just walked about 20 blocks, it was a bit uncomfortable to sit down at first. Fortunately, the server came quickly and brought us hot tea and ice cold water. We ordered a couple of items off the menu's daily special. She had a two-roll combo and I ordered the soba special. It was a disappointment at $30+ per person. The soba special came with a salad, soba in broth and separate tuna over rice. The salad while fresh had too much dressing. The sob did not feel/taste like they were hand made at Tsushima. The broth was too hot so the soba was too soft toward the end. There were also shaved beef, scallions, and panko in the bowl that didn't amount to anything. The tuna over rice was a major disappointment. The tuna was thin, didn't look fresh, and lacked flavor. The rice looked like it was warmed up in the microwave. I would have accepted the quality of food if it were from a food court somewhere. But, as a proper Japanese restaurant, this was really disappointing not acceptable. read more

Located a couple blocks from Grand Central, this little gem of a sushi restaurant definitely gets a lot of foot traffic during the week. On the Saturday we visited, however, the place was quiet, to the point where there was no host near the front door. I walked in, and waited for at least 5 minutes before a waiter doing double duty as host walked by and noticed me. The sushi here is surprisingly delicious for the price. In their designated weekend lunch menu, you will find multiple combo options which include a number of sushi/sashimi options. We went with the Selection Lunch combo, chirashi, and 2 orders of a la carte nigiri ($5.50/2 pieces). The Selection Lunch comes with soup, salad, rice, tempura, a maki roll, and 2 additional items from a small list. You get a little bit of everything. However, for a couple bucks more, I recommend you go for the beautiful chirashi! Perfectly seasoned sushi rice with a beautiful variety of fresh fish on top. Delicious! One thing to note is that Tsushima is very stingy with their wasabi. I had to ask 2x during my meal for more because each serving they brought out was about the size of a dime. read more

We were 3 and we were seated in a table for 4, but when a colleague came to join us at the last minute, they wont even let her sit on the 4th chair in the table. There is no logic to this rule, specially when there is an empty chair in a square table we are occupying. They did not want to seat my colleague. My friends first took us to this spot for my birthday last year. I'll never forget the first time I tried their seared salmon with yuzu sushi. That was the first time I realized sushi can taste that amazing. Since then I have been on a sushi HUNT in the city for any piece of sushi that tastes as good as that one (FYI the spicy scallop handroll here at Tsushima is equally amazing). That first night, we each had at least four pieces of that salmon... We also had multiple of the handrolls. The sushi here is really that good. This is a go-to neighborhood spot and the last time I stopped by around 5PM for Sunday dinner, the restaurant was quickly filling up! This is a post regarding the Tsushima Bar. They have a bar area that does a very price competitive happy hour in NYC. Beers are 3 dollars! Limited seating and probably full by 6pm. Food quality is very high and service is fast as well. This place is what you want in a happy hour. Great atmosphere, great food, cheap drinks, etc. My number one recommendation for food is the Asari Shio Ramen (Clam Ramen). Super light and you won't feel disgustingly full. Goes really well with Japanese beer (Asahi or Sapporo). If you live in the city, this place is a must go with a couple of your friends. Even if you can't get into the bar, there's seats in the back (they don't do happy hour though). Highly recommend if you are looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant. read more

Decor is in authentic Japanese fashion and service is performed in quiet efficiency. I did see many Japanese locals eating inside so that speaks to the quality of the place. That being said, Tsushima seems like it's trapped in the early 2000's where a dimly lit restaurant and decent service will make the place. Menus are still in the same laminated binders and the offerings no longer look appetizing staring at a page that's been scratched by 5000 other perusing diners. I've lived on the same block as this place for almost 2 years so I have no clue how it took me so long to finally try out a meal here. If anything, my experience was so good it just made me mad at myself for not trying it sooner! Came on a Sunday night to eat in the main dining room. Place was pretty busy for what's normally a sleepy night in midtown. The dining room itself is smallish, with tables on the outside for group dining. The menu is massive and they have a great amount of weekend special options. If I remember correctly their weekend special had a huge assortment of rolls for only $5.50 which is a great deal. Wanted to get a little of everything , we ordered both from the special menu and the main To start I had the tuna carpaccio and the avocado tomato salad. The tuna was amazing, with a generous portion of ponzu sauce and avocado. Maybe a bit too salty but overall really good. The salad was also very tasty - pretty rare to find anything with tomatoes at a Japanese place so that was interesting as well. For the mains we both just did sushi. I had the spicy tuna shrimp tempura roll, the salmon avocado roll and the spicy tuna avocado roll. All three were delicious with fish I could tell was extremely fresh. My favorite of the 3 was probably the spicy tuna shrimp tempura roll, however all 3 were great. Decent size too. Overall I had a great first experience here and I suspect it will be the first of many more! read more

Oh man this is a shortie review for a goodie sort of place. I kept forgetting to give this meal a fantastic 5 stars. I've never had real seaweed salad like this before. And this was the BEST natto i've ever had in my life, mainly because it didn't really taste like goopy old socks... but more importantly!!! This place has such a gooood variety of veg sushi opens. STAY AWAY! THIS PLACE IS CONDESCENDING AND PROBLEMATIC! THEY DO NOT DESERVE YOUR BUSINESS! Attempted to order from them two days in a row via Postmates. The first day the order got canceled after 90 minutes, the second day the front desk person went ballistic and refused to cancel the order and harassed the Postmate. I wish I was making this up. My original order was delayed by an hour. Called to ask what was wrong and the phone lady stated that the courier was out but then stated the order was given to the Postmate but he was coming back. It made no sense. Called the Postmate and he said the crazy lady wouldn't take the order because some items on the menu were incorrect. No modifications were sent to me. I called back and the crazy lady went NUTS on the phone yelling at me about how much she hates Postmates, "it's all Postmates fault!!", and acting very unhinged demanding I leave her alone and call Postmates. I felt uncomfortable and then hung up. The crazy lady then proceeded to harass the Postmate, refuse to change or cancel the order, and then make the Postmate leave because he felt so uncomfortable. This review is on the lunch special before the pandemic in 2019. While looking for good sushi places, I just came to remember this place because it gave me one of the worst service experiences in NY. I usually shrug off even if the service is unpleasant. Everybody is busy and sometimes some people have a bad day. But here, I felt mortified, humiliated when I ordered their weekly lunch special(around $20, Chirashi), which they were advertising. I ordered it since it was a good deal. I just added one drink for a less than a 30-minute quick lunch, and my friend ordered the same menu. Then, the staff(a Japanese guy) gave us two a really DIRTY look as if we were taking an advantage of them. We felt confused. Is it rude order their lunch special? We finished our lunch quickly before lunchtime rush-hour. We were quietly talking and eating. But the same staff kept that DESPISING look to the end. That look is unforgettable... Food was just okay. Food didn't look appealing, But maybe it can be understandable because a Chirash basically comes with leftover sashimi, not top high quality sashimi. There were some hygiene problems, too. Some rices were sticking to the outside of bowl and there were some stains on the sauce plate. I wouldn't make a fuss about it though. But that condescending look really left a bad taste. read more

I feel bad for writing this, but I think patrons deserve the warning. This one particular day I planned to have Sushi for lunch at my go to restaurant, however; they were unavailable. Then I remembered I've dined at Tsushima many years ago, so I called and confirmed if I could be seated. I've ordered Sushi Lunch B 7 pcs assorted sushi w/California roll. I also added Chutoro and uni. Big mistake! All white fish were dry as they were not stored appropriately. They were sliced very thin and pieces were very small. Had an audacity to charge $15 for Chutoro for the tiny thin piece. As when I looked around, majority of the customers did not ordered sushi, and they were enjoying their food. I eat a ton of sushi and initially, the idea of eating sushi at the table, as opposed to the bar, was somewhat uninteresting to me, I am so glad I was proved wrong. I really liked how Japanese the restaurant felt, from the staff to the clientele to the decor. A small hidden spot in Murray Hill that serves up different lunch sets daily. My lunch crew and I dropped by here one Friday, just before noon. The decor is very simple with white sheets, light wooden barriers, and furniture. Most of my lunch crew got the ramen with the char siu. The one piece of char siu was so soft and full of flavor from being slow-cooked beforehand. It just was the perfect amount of fat and meat! Sushi rolls are a guilty pleasure of mine. They're not exactly authentic but I was really craving for it. I tried the Yellowtail Scallion and Salmon Avocado. The fish meat was really fresh! Every piece just melted in my mouth! Went to this place for lunch with my co-workers per her recommendation. They have happy hour pricing on their pre-set lunch specials if you got there before 12:15pm. I definitely would recommend getting here early for lunch to get seats, by the time we left at around 12:30pm, there's a line waiting for tables. I like that they have an extensive lunch menu, if you didn't like the lunch specials, you could pick and choose from the create your own set menus with groups of options from menu A, B, and C. If you got items from menu A and menu B, I think that's enough food for lunch and for that, your lunch would come out to about $21 before tips. I picked the salmon avocado roll, salmon and eel with brown rice. It came with salad and soup. This place also has private rooms for bigger groups. The food was average. It reminds me of an upscale Asian Station. My friends and I got a stomachache after lunch so the seafood served here is probably not fresh. The traditional warm and kind Japanese service was nowhere to be found in this very average looking sushi joint. Things got worse when we got the bill and they effectively charged $28.50 for an 8oz cocktail of Hendrix gin and soda with a splash of chartreuse. They said they have to charge individually for each item - $15 for the gin + $12 for the splash of chartreuse + $1.50 for the soda water. Trying to reason with the manager was a waste of breath. I have not try their lunch menu at this new location but I have tried their dinner twice and both times were very disappointing! The only reason I came back is because they are one of the only place you could go on a friday night in midtown without reservation and still get a table. Both times I was here I tried different food from their menu, everything tasted bland, nothing is really good and nothing is really bad either. Their sushi was just ok.. I had the seared salmon with lemon and I did not get the charred taste from searing the fish... Somehow their food looks good but they are all missing something... The pprtions were ridiculously small, its ok to have quality over quantity but their quality are just so so...The only saving grace is the uni chawanmushi.. Service was pretty bad too, consider the restaurant is relatively small and they had like 5 servers the night I was there, somehow their service was so disorganize. There is an old asian male waiter who is particularly rude. We waited a long time for our appetizers, when our main sushi entree came, we inquire about our appetizer. He looked annoyed and said to us "we are very busy today, you can eat your sushi first" and walked away. Also most japanese restaurants give you a cup of tea with the check before you go. He came to give us the check and he asked "you dont want tea right?" He should be working at a fast food restaurant instead of in a restaurant that charges pretty steep price.
