Delicious food and great service - what more could you ask for? We treated ourselves to the box of fantasies and it was worth every penny. When it arrived, the waiter clearly explained each item, its origin, and provided his suggested order of which to start and end. We also ordered a bottle of sake to share and they were very diligent on filling our glasses up. We didnt even realize we drank the whole bottle until we were done! I got 2 pieces of 3 types of tuna and 2 types of salmon along with the spicy tuna roll. It was so good. The fish melted in my mouth. The spicy tuna roll was perfectly spicy. I really liked each piece of sushi. So flavorful. My husband ordered the spicy tuna roll and the shrimp tempura roll. He really liked both of them too. His favorite was the shrimp tempura roll, but they were both really good. We loved the hot towel and hot green tea after the meal. Entering Hatsuhana feels like being transported into Japan between the Japanese-speaking hosts and waitstaff and the way you are warmly greeted upon making your way to your table. Although some aspects are decidedly American (from tipping to some of their cocktails) this place is a true Japanese spot through and through. Service is efficient starting with a cold towel (which is greatly appreciated, especially during NYC summers) and water and the menu is decidedly Japanese. I tried a few classics, including their miso marinated cod and "Box of Dreams" which they are most well-known for. The miso cod (~$22?) felt a bit pricey for what you get although the Box of Dreams ($60) feels like a steal in comparison. All of the fish and nigiri are high-quality and I appreciate that they include uni in both the Sushi Deluxe and Box of Dreams. Interestingly, I noticed that most of the fish was tuna in my Sushi Deluxe (not that I'm complaining) but salmon lovers might want to pick their own with Hatsuhana's "Pick 10". read more

The staff is polite from the moment you walk in and even let us order a la carte at the counter (all the counter chefs were busy). A lot of people I know like Hatsuhana, and I was finally able to try it for lunch. My caveat is that I'm really not a sushi person, so it's hard for me to compare this with other places in the city. I got the chirashi bowl, which came with two layers and included fish roe, uni, raw shrimp, tuna, Japanese rolled omelet, mushrooms etc. It was a decent amount of food and I enjoyed it overall. I'm not a huge raw shrimp fan, so I would swap that out next time, and I also don't like how sweet Japanese omelets are (mushrooms were sweet too). The chirashi also came with a side of either miso soup or salad (which was pretty standard). Ambiance was nice - we sat upstairs near the bar area where the sushi chefs were prepping the food. Had a reservation for a party of 5 on a weeknight and we were excited to try this place out. We ordered what's pictured below along with a few other dishes. The service is wonderful, the servers are very attentive and also explain every type of sushi or fish you get when it arrives to you which was nice. The interior design is minimalistic but still has a nice modern type vibe to it. It started getting very crowded after 7pm and I believe there may be a strict 1.5 hr policy because we were wrapping up with our check and to go boxes roughly 1.5 hrs after being seated and they asked us if we're able to clear the table. Would've been nice for them to write this in the reservation policy and/or let us know when we were seated initially so that we could plan for it, such as using the bathroom, etc. but overall, it was a great meal with delicious sashimi and sushi. read more

I found myself at Hatsuhana for an educational dinner. This was a nice surprise as steakhouses are the mainstay for these types of things, so sushi was a welcome reprieve. I do enjoy sushi, so I was looking forward to seeing what Hatsuhana offered. The restaurant is conveniently located in Midtown, and is decently sized. Upon entry we were greeted by the main lobby/greeting area - in the back there are a few tables, and they also have a second level with more tables and the main sushi bar where diners can also sit. The aesthetics were bright - lots of light woods and good lighting which made the entire space feel very open; it was almost a little retro in its design - I'm not sure though if that was intentional. We decided to start with a few apps - namely the salmon carpaccio, tempura, seaweed salad, and Ankimo (steamed monkfish liver). Everything was tasty - I liked the seaweed salad the most as it had good flavor and tasted fresh. The liver was an interesting experience for me personally, the best way I could describe it is that it's similar to pate. For our mains we got a variety of sushi pieces and a roll; we chose a la carte though you can also get pre-selected plates. For my roll I got the spicy tuna which was pretty good, albeit not too noteworthy - similar to what I've had at other sushi spots. The other sushi pieces I had were pretty good as well - my favorites were the salmon, fluke and toro. I also had sea urchin which I don't have much experience with - it was good but I'm not fully sold on it yet; maybe after a couple more tries. We decided to get dessert - I got the avocado ice cream which was pretty good - interesting texture and not overly sweet. Service was fine, though I wouldn't say anything was truly noteworthy about it. Overall, Hatsuhana was fine - you'll have a good meal here but I think there are more interesting sushi spots in the area. I would consider returning but I'm not running back. read more

If you read the history about the restaurant, it makes it all special because this institution has been here since the 70s to cater to Japanese businessmen. The ambiance and vibe is authentic, and that made the experience better. Service was great, I got a hand towel in the beginning and green tea at the end. However, this is not the best sushi I've had. It was decent but pieces were hit or miss. I ordered the omakase which is meant to have chef's best choice of sushi that day but it didn't live up to expectations.
