Decided to give this place a try since it was one of the few sushi places opened late on a Sunday night. I ordered the spicy dynamite roll, the surf and turf roll, spicy tuna roll and the crab puffs. All were a disappointment. They weren't bad, just not as yummy as I'm accustomed to. The quality was and freshness of the ingredients was just ok. Maybe because I ordered late it wasn't as good? My fiancee and I are here at least 2-3 times a month. This is our go to sushi spot. A few reasons why 1) great service every single time 2) great price point 3) great selection of rolls A few reasons for 4/5 stars 1) terrible parking 2) It does smell a bit more fishy than most places in town. 3) Inconsistency in the presentation of rolls or portion sizes of apps. 80% of the time it is fine but when its not... it is way off. I recommend as a great option here in Houston. If you are expecting upscale, you may be disappointed. Great sushi for a great price! I've taken my girlfriend to Sushi Wabi twice now, and both were great experiences. We typically start with pepper tuna sashimi. So fresh! As far as sushi goes, I prefer the Crunchy Roll, Tiger Eye Roll, Crazy Roll, or the Rock & Roll Roll. They are all quite delish. They are made well, and don't feel too heavy in your tummy. Finish with a nice mango mochi. Yummm Parking can be a headache in this plaza when it get's busy. I suggest checking them out on a weeknight. read more

I started with the miso which had a strange after taste, we then had the calamari which had no flavor and soy sauce for dipping which was gross, I had an avocado roll and a California roll and the avocado they used was not ready to be eaten so it tasted bad and rubbery. The place doesn't even deserve a star but for reviews sake .. whatever. The service is the horrendous. Just like the tuna. Actually the service was worse. We had a male waiter. He was slower than molasses rolling down a frozen tree in the dead of winter. He literally couldn't have given any effs about his job. None. My grandmother moves faster than him. Not once had he come by, post taking our appetiser order, to ask if we wanted anything else. We had to raise our hands to get attention. Finally a young lady came and took our sashimi order. We got escolar, fresh salmon, and tuna. It took about a year to come out. They had four tables of two patrons each. Yet it still took them almost a year to bring our 12 slices of raw fish!?! All the cuts were pretty thick (I guess chef preference, I prefer thin slices) and the tuna was just foul. Almost as foul as the waiter and his attitude. We then had to raise our hands again for the check, and went unnoticed, while a crowd of servers gathered towards the back of the place were just chit chatting away. We saw a patron who's table was right next to them raise his hand and wave and then raise his voice asking for help. We did the same since no one seemed to care about helping, or anything else in general. Worst $50 bucks I've ever spent. Don't go here. Just don't. Spend a little bit more money and hit up Michiru instead (around the corner from this disaster.) read more

This is one of my favorite sushi places. I've been coming here for over six years and it's been consistently solid. The two main things that I like about this place are the quality and the price. Houston is filled with sushi places that try to out hipster each other and charge you for making different shaped animals out of your rolls. While Sushi Wabi does have some of these more unique rolls, they also have some of the staples at very reasonable prices. The quality is also always great. I came here after stopping by oishii that was super busy, and I spent $12 on 9 pieces of sushi that was pretty bad quality and really dry and also iceberg lettuce that was DRENCHED in some creamy dressing that I definitely did not enjoy :// maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, but I was not satisfied with what I got. When Oishii is closed, do not panic, Sushi Wabi is just down the block and will be open. Sushi Wabi is almost on par with Oishii prices, it's just a tad more expensive but still way cheaper than Kata or Azuma. I am sure at this point, they hate being compared to Oishii. So, a review on its own merit. I love the way they package their take out. They carry my favorite standards: spicy tuna, crazy, caterpillar. Their signature rolls are infiltrated with mayo, cream cheese, or fried and covered in both (most, not all). I did like the Mango Tango, which contains no mayo OR cream cheese! The firecracker is not a signature roll, but still not to be missed. I do wish that they toned down the creamy component of their maki rolls for at least half of the signature maki. Their eel? Is fabulous. Juicy, plump, perfectly cooked. Their shrimp tempura is not stale. I just wish the spicy tuna didn't have ANY creaminess in it. I wish it was pure tuna and pure spicy. Their maki rolls are made with pride and nothing falls apart. Overall, 5 non-signature rolls take out for 2 people was $36. They package the ginger and wasabi separately from the rolls. read more

I happened to stumble across this place several Thursday nights ago, which I think was their Grand Opening night. The ambiance was nice, but right off the bat I was super excited that the Texans game was on! That immediately put me in a good mood. The service was excellent and the prices were even better. My date and I ate 4 rolls and an appetizer and I was pleased to not have to break the bank for a sushi dinner like I do at most other sushi restaurants. We ordered basil wings as an appetizer and O-M-G were they delish. Spoken as a veteran at sports bars across this city, let me say these are unequivocally the best "wings" I have ever had. I have now been 5 times in 3 weeks so I've had almost every roll. If you sit at the bar and speak with the sushi chef he is very friendly and will "take the wheel" for you if you ask. After my first visit, I was impressed with his personalty and passion for sushi so the next time I asked him to surprise me with my sushi order. This was one of the best decisions I've made in a while! I was then wow'ed with some of the best sushi I could have ever imagined. The cool part is not only is the sushi second to none, it's decorated very unique which adds to the experience in a fresh way. The rolls you have to order are the Erica Roll, Volcano Roll, and Happy Sumo roll. For dessert, I have tried the OMG Cheesecake and the Tempura Ice Cream. The OMG was a 9 out of 10 and the ice cream was an 11 out of 10. The ice cream is one of the best desserts you will ever have. This is definitely not your mother's ice cream! It's not looking good when you take a chance on strip mall sushi and open up the menu to size up their specialty roll style. You're going to top my sushi with baked apple pie? Get out of my grill Tsunami Roll. What's so oceanic about apple pie anyway?? Then I took a glimpse at Sushi Wabi's happy hour menu (i.e. everything but sushi). Yep - they will give you all the cheap edamame in the world, but G-d forbid they give you $3 spicy salmon. Oh wait, spicy salmon is $3.00 ALL THE TIME? Sushi Wabi just redeemed themselves! And off I went with my first take out order at Sushi Wabi, Greenway Plaza's surprisingly satisfying, uber casual sushi joint. Neighboring sushi gem, Oishii should not be concerned as Wabi lacks Oishii's charm and hole in the wall grit. Where Wabi one ups them is their ambition (which is something no one wants out of Oishii in the first place). I even saw them serving a roll on fire! I believe it may have been a special, but I do know it was topped with crawdads....now that has to be a good time. In addition to my spicy salmon on the cheap, I ordered the tuna tower off the appetizer menu. After a breezy few minutes my meal was ready and I reluctantly took my first bite out of tuna heaven. Tuna, avocado, crab salad, tempura flakes and masago.....I LOVE YOU. Each bite had the perfect creamy, crunchy, buttery tuna perfection one yearns for. Have trust in the tower.....it's fantastic. In between my bites of tuna, I got into my spicy salmon roll. Now I know why it's $3. The roll is relatively small with no real heat coming from the actual fish - just red pepper powder on the rice. A swing and a miss...... As for service - Sushi Wabi hits it out of the park. Everyone I interacted with was welcoming and helpful. Bottom Line: Sushi Wabi has room for improvement, but serves its purpose. The fact that this restaurant is just doors down from Oporto is simply blasphemy. Let me tell you straight up-I never liked Oiishi. Who cares about the prices, the quality of the food is just terrible. Well, this restaurant is like a carbon copy of Oishii. Most of the rolls are between 3 and 4 dollars- but they are comprable to day old supermarket sushi. I dont think I have had worse sushi than this. My date and I ordered several rolls, all of which were terrible- it all really starts with the rice, their rice is not a good one, you can tell the quality of the rice is very poor. In additon to the rolls, we also ordered Miso soup - completely tasteless and contained exactly 2 pieces of tofu the size of a dime in it. The instant miso soup that you can buy at asian markets is better than this! We also ordered the seaweed salad and it lacked seasoning . For my main dish I ordered the Udon Vegetable soup. On the menu it read : vegetables with udon and fish cake. Well, when I recieved my soup I noticed there was no fish cake. At this point I thought to myself "Do I really want a fish cake? After tasting the rolls, I dont want anything else that wreaks of rancid fish in my bowl" I think I understand the type of people who have given this restaurant 5 stars, those being people who want to eat CHEAP sushi and really dont care about the quality, taste or freshness of the ingredients. I might be a bit biased about this place. Maybe it's because it's literally a 15-second drive from my apartment. Or maybe it's because it was at this restaurant that I tried sushi for the first time...not those fake little fusion rolls with cute names that I had always ordered before, but REAL SUSHI -- nigiri, sashimi, types of fish I had never heard of before, a dish called Chirashi, etc. But even if I didn't have a special place in my heart for the above reasons, I would still like this place a lot. The fish has always been of good quality and super fresh, the rolls are creative and tasty, and the prices are great. Trust me, I eat here all the time and I'm not broke yet, which shows you how affordable it must be. AND I've been here about a million times in the last few months and I'm not sick of the food yet...another good sign! The only thing about this place is that if you come during peak hours, parking can be a bit difficult to find. When I go for lunch I come right at 11 AM, and if I want dinner I go later, around 8 or 8:30. I like the sushi lunch, the daily lunch (depending on what the daily roll is), the chirashi, the pacific roll, and the wabi sushi platter. But everything I've tried here is good, and there's something for everyone: tasty appetizers, teriyaki dishes, soups, hand rolls, etc. I will be coming back very often for a long time! read more

This place was GREAT! Similar to Diane, We U-Turned after finding Oishii closed for NYE lunch. I had to do a bit of convincing to get my husband to turn (after all, Kubo, tried and true, was only 10 minutes away in Rice Village), but he gave in and we were so lucky he did! This place will, in my opinion, replace Oishii as the city's best sushi dive bar. We got there right as they opened, got a table, and were promptly delivered our drinks. The waitress was helpful and didn't bother us constantly, and the sushi chef was very nice (he even greeted us, introduced himself, and asked us how our visit was when we were leaving!). The menu was simple, to the point, and very helpful. The food was fantastic. The Miso soup was made using fresh tofu (take a hint, other sushi restaurants in Houston) and the shrimp and veggie tempura was perfect. But I didn't get on write a review of battered and fried seafood. The stuff that really got my attention was the Fuji Volcano sushi, with crab mix, avocado, masago, shrimp, scallop and spicy mayo. with 8 pieces, it arrived on a plate with flaming spicy mayo around the sushi, and in the middle sat a bed of crab mix topped with crunch, shrimp, and scallops and drizzled in spicy mayo. There was also a strawberry and kiwi (I think) sauce on the side. I was BLOWN AWAY. Wow, guys. Y'all did a great job. The Happy hour menu looks affordable and diverse ($3 apps for happy hour, including some of the basic sushi) but can't wait to go back and give it a shot once they get their liquor license. Sushi Wabi or Oishii? Which is which?? I've read the reviews for other yelper's and notice a lot of them factor in the overall rating when it comes to decor or parking. Shouldn't it be the food presentation, food quality/taste and service? IMO, that is the criteria i look forward to. So yesterday, i went to Oishii for a late lunch and the experience was phenomenal. Today, its Wabi and the overall experience was meh... wobbly! Wabi-Wobbly... get it? My less than stellar comedic remark was just like the food. I went with a co-worker and she is notable when she knows the sushi is ok or not. We came at a little over 1pm to avoid the Lunch express hour. Host/server was polite and seated us comfortably. Inside the restaurant, it looked great, asian inspired dark red walls and a big screen tv overlooking the bar. Still am not going to factor the rating of the restaurant like i said earlier. Overall she was ok with what she ordered, however myself is a different story. -Agedashe Tofu (Friend Tofu/Tempura Sauce) Plump and soft, yet a slight crisp because it was fried, meh...ok to me as well to her. -Spicy Basil Wings (Honey Glazed w/ Fresh Basil. Pepper & Ginger) couldnt taste the better because it was overwhelm by the oohhhhh Basil Basil Basil!!!! Good, tart, sweet and crisp! -Spider Roll (Soft Shell Crab, Cucumber,Kaiwari, Sesame Seed, Spicy Mayo, Masago) It was good, not great, but good. not too much Japanese rice roll into seaweed, crunchy, and an overwheming taste of spicy tasty mayo. -Beef Teryaki Bento Box (Beef w/ Rice. Fried Tempura, California Roll) and Miso Soup. Now let me start off with the Miso Soup. Either is was bland because it wasnt great, but ok. Couldnt savor the soup, so the Fried Tempura was ok, i particulary like the Cucumber than the Sweet Yam. California Roll was a little below average, not better than Oishii. Both used real crab not imitation sticks which i dislike. Now the main entree... Kid you not, just like Michelle T's 6/30/2013 review with the beef, insanely "DRY"! Its in caps dry. Bland and dry never marinated and just layered sauce on top of it. Yes, it should not be called teriyaki, but named "Dry Beef with sauce on top" dish. I will not try it again and waste the money! Not marbled, not juicy, its a bit of a disgrace. Hopefully the next time again if there is a next time, just sashimi, rolls, and the wings, thats it. I have been a regular at Oishi for years. After seeing so many reviews comparing the two I was reluctant, yet curious so I decided to check it out for lunch today. I see the parallels to Oishi - the prices are reasonable and service is quick. The decor here is a bit nicer, more traditional instead of the kitschy style that Oishi is known for. Upon entering I noticed a lunch special of the day. This is what myself and my dining companion ordered. It featured a roll of the day and 3 pieces of miscellaneous sushi. The roll of the day had some crab inside with seared tuna on the outside. It was nothing too fancy, but it was fresh and delicious. We walked out spending just under $25 for both of us. I reviewed the menu and the specialty rolls and they looked great. Can't wait to go back and try a few out. read more

Ordered the Japanese Fried Rice (comes with chicken & veggies). The dish is okay enough for the lunch price I paid ($6.95). The rice itself was okay enough. The chicken in the rice was VERY DRY. Eventually I just ate around it. The salad comes with a house dressing that I really liked. However the salad was a couple chunks of iceburg lettuce with 2-3 pieces of spring mix to make it look better. I came at Happy Hour, so I got to try a lot of items. At first I was leery because when you walk in you smell a lot of oil and fish. Many of their dishes are fried so this explains some of the oily scent. First was the Pork Goyza, very good and tender. The Scorpion roll, which is a calamari roll, I was glad to see that several rolls that didn't include shellfish. Watch out the spicy oil (not sauce) has a big bite. The Yakiudon is a tasteless, oily pile of fishy grossness. The "sauce" was nothing more than about 2oz of vegetable oil, which took over even the flavor of the vegetables. I don't even want to talk about the fish flakes. If the plate had a flavorful sauce, say ginger, it would have been a huge hit, I should have just ordered a glass of oil. It is safe to say that if you stick to the sushi you should do alright. The oily sauce didn't sit right with my tummy so I didn't order dessert. Lets talk about the servers: A young girl came in on her own and ordered more than her parents gave her money for; it's a kid thing. She had $4.30, just enough to either get ice cream or a single $3 item off the Happy Hour list with tax and a small tip. She ordered coke, shrimp, and ice cream, double her money. I told the waiter, Chris, to put the rest on my bill, because I do not believe in children going hungry; the little girl insisted he apply what she had to my bill; $4.30, she said it over and over. A short time later the little girl came back with her brother to con you out of a serving of ice cream for him; claiming the ice cream melted; she had the rest of the money for her order. I HEARD and SAW the little girl tell the pregnant waitress to apply the money to MY bill. The waitress never consulted my waiter about the story. I called my waiter over to make sure the waitress hadn't charged anything over and above the initial order from the little girl. I discovered that not only did you NOT apply the money the little girl brought back to my bill, but you hadn't even applied the proper amount from the first visit. Only $2.29 from the initial $4.30 was credited to me. SHAME ON YOU. If the wait staff had only done the right thing, this review would have scored more stars based solely on that attribute and the wait staff been applauded and rewarded for their honesty. I significantly reduced my tip. Now I have to expose the wait staff's greed and dishonesty. Because they decided to pocket $2 for one and $5 for the other, they cheated themselves out of a substantial reward, and gained exposure to the public for being crappy servers. read more

Some of the special rolls I have tried are okay, but my favorites (and EVERYONE should try one or both of these when they first visit, and every visit afterward!) are the Erika Rolls and the Fuji Volcano. Can we say foodgasm?? They also have very good house-made fruit sakes. I don't normally like filtered sake, but the fruit makes these nice and sweet. Good sushi at a reasonable price, given it's location. I recently dined here with a friend and I must say that it's a good alternative to any of the other sushi places in the area. We ordered miso soups and the soft shell crabs to start. The soft shell crab came with a light dipping sauce and was crispy and flavorful. The miso soup was ok- very subtle miso flavor, but plenty of seaweed and tofu. For nigiri, we ordered uni, escolar, and white tuna. The uni was pretty good- not the best quality, but it was pretty fresh and mild in flavor. The escolar was delicious and fresh. However the white tuna tasted a little off- perhaps it was sitting out for awhile? For rolls, we had simple ones- rock n' roll (tempura) and crazy roll (tempura shrimp with spicy tuna) both were fresh and very delicious. To finish, we had the sashimi lover platter- 24 assorted pieces of sashimi arranged over ice. My favorites were the escolar and the salmon. Servers were very nice, polite, and always explained to us what everything was when setting the food on the table. I would recommend this place to anyone who is in the area looking for an alternative or replacement to RA or Oishii. read more
