After about a year of avoiding this place (prices & portions when they switched owners); we were so happy to celebrate my 3 year sobriety from alcohol; at Sushi Ya, earlier tonight. I had the beef teriyaki & boyfriend roll. My other half had the chicken katsu & heart attack appetizer, (I don't order katsu, but I am picky about the katsu sauce, & I loved it.) & if you have enough room after dinner, I suggest the fried Oreo. Everything we ate tonight, was amazing! & our server was awesome! (Lady w/glittery eyeshadow & beautiful make up). Wonderful food and excellent service. Wife and I split two appetizers and each ordered a roll. The Monkey Mushroom appetizer was amazing! I could have just eaten this as a meal. The Vegetable Tempura was delicious, but the portion size seemed a little small. Not really enough to share, as there was only one of each vegetable on the plate. The Hot Lava Roll was equally as scrumptious as the appetizer. I can't answer for what she had other than she said it was delicious. I haven't been in here before and don't go into Anchorage often to eat. We had intended to go to another place, but they were closed so we stopped in here. The decor was impressive. I've been so busy but this has been on my mind! We ordered 2 rolls for my husbands birthday on 11/22 since that is his favorite food & I'm just ok so when it's his day of course that's what he picks. Ordered & was told about 20-25 minutes when I arrived food was ready when we got home the food looked lovely & I have to say some of the best rolls I have eaten in a long time!! I've been coming to Sushi Ya since before they moved across town. I used to love their complimentary miso soup and salad. Ugh, even that cold vinegar noodle salad was good. But they don't offer them with your meal anymore. Everything must be ordered ala carte. The service was lacking. My ocean salad, miso soup, house salad and sushi all came out at the same time and the server never came to check back to see how my food was. She would just leave things on the table and not say a word. I get it you're busy but at least have the decency to apologize for the wait. Waited 20 minutes for a table, 30 minutes for food. $35 worth of poor service and long waits, no thanks. I'll be heading somewhere else. Maybe management could consider better staffing. read more

I think this is one of the best sushi places in town. Above average variety of sushi options and other non raw dishes. Surprisingly, the sesame chicken is quite good. Lots of kid friendly options and you can ask for a chopsticks holder to make easier for kids. Staff are always very friendly, professional, and attentive. Ambiance is a big selling point. We started with Miso Soup and Vegetable Tempura. The tempura was perfectly light and had a nice variety of veggies and the Miso was perfect. We have a soy/gluten free kiddo and the server was amazing at checking ingredients (not easy in an Asian restaurant to avoid those!) and helped us order a great meal for him. We ordered a variety of rolls, and the Golden Crunch was one kiddos favorite but I loved Heaven Scent Roll. The Spicy Ya Roll was a table favorite, and the octopus was cooked perfectly. We also tried a teriyaki chicken and that was well received as well. The tea is perfect too and it was a touch chilly inside (not normally a problem I have but we were all cold) so the tea was just what we needed to fight the chill while we waited for the food. We ordered apps, dinners and dessert- the serving pace was great (we had a large delay for one order, but everything else was timed well). The restaurant was clean, the service was stellar. The booths have small screens that slide down and offer a bit of privacy in the busy restaurant. It's a touch noisy, but not obnoxious. We will happily go back again! We were a table of four, and glad we placed a reservation- call ahead! The kiddos were welcomed well (not always the case!) and it's a spot I'd happily visit for a date night or with more family. It's pricey but not overly so- just plan on spending $20+ per person if you are looking for variety/sharing, less if you go simple/ stick to one choice per person. read more

They've taken away half the sushi rolls on the menu and raised the prices by about $4 on every roll. I feel the quality may of actually gone downhill a bit as well. Service is still subpar and the children's chicken nuggets are now $11 and you get FOUR chicken nuggets. Sesame chicken is now $22. There is a reason the parking lot is no longer full. We had a party of 15 and I was really happy with how quickly we were served and how attentive the staff were. Service was A+. They have a great menu with tons of options. They also had a special menu that was lovely with all kinds of fun things to try. We liked that there were multiple options of larger sushi combos. Everybody in our group agreed the Oysters were some of the best we have ever had. I ordered one of the spicy rolls from the special menu, the rolls were large and more than enough for 2 people to share. We were also impressed with how much fish they give you for the sashimi. We had plenty of food and probably over ordered. Also the ambiance was really lovely, and added to our experience. We will be back and highly recommend you give this place a try. Went here for a birthday gathering. Was a little skeptical by the buildings outward appearance. Guess that will again teach me to judge a book by its cover. This place is amazingly beautiful inside. Just as importantly the food was outstanding. We were a party of 8 and not one person Had anything but good things to say about their entire meal. First time, actually I'm visiting my son here in Anchorage. It was a very good recommendation from him. We ordered a lot and all was good tasting. Calamari we ordered 2X, the sauce was especially good, Takoyaki 2X was delish, Island Roll was spicy for my son, but I loved it, Lion King Roll was also good, Mixed Tempura was on especial for $5, can't go wrong with 2pc shrimp tempura and veggies, Yakitori was soft and flavorful. My son also ordered Sesame chicken. To be honest it's one of the best Japanese restaurant I've been, here or in Hawaii. The only reason why it's only 4star is that I had to ask for Hot Tea twice because my server forgot and she weren't even busy, after 7minutes of waiting. Lots of taste and heat but not punch you in the mouth heat where it's unbearable. Prices are comparable to other places but you get soup, salad and a noodle appetizer with your meal. I am sad to report, this has changed. The portion size of the rolls have been dramatically cut. About 50% less food but with the same price tag and you no longer receive the full 6 course. They cut out the noodle salad and desert. Between the three changes this cuts out a lot of calories. I went with a friend, so there were two of us and we spent $60 and left hungry, seriously. This restaurant had just re-opened in late July and we visited it twice since. The interiors are very modern and clean. I ordered Lion King sushi that I would usually order in California. But it does not look like the same one. I would think that it was a standard. Anyway, the amount of serving is very generous and they have more selections of sushi. They do not have complimentary appetizer like Edamame which most Japanese restaurants I have been to. It would be a separate order. My family and I have been coming to this place since they were located in the Dimond area (for about 8 years). It seems that the few times I've been here in the past year or so, the prices have gone up significantly, the decor has gotten much more fancy, and the food has changed a bit. Seriously, the price increases have made me nervous. Some Examples: Delicious Fried rice went from $16 to $22. All sushi rolls went from $8 to $12 (for the less elaborate ones) and $12 to $20 and up (for the more elaborate ones). And they're charging for a small bowl of miso soup that used to be complementary, now $2. I understand staffing issues due to Covid and the staff has been slow at times but never sloth-speed. But the speed and service today at lunch was terrific! The food was good but not the best, like when they were at the Dimond location. I believe that with all the remodeling, they are increasing the prices to pay for these unnecessary decor-upgrades. It was really beautiful before. Quit mucking around with all this remodeling! We use to love Sushi Ya, but over the last couple of years it has slowly started to decline. The place gets nicer in appearance, while the food and service steadily go down. I go out to eat for good food, not pretty decorations. Most restaurants are suffering now due to Covid-19 and the world wide shortage of employees...Sushi Ya has taken this burden and inflicted its frustrations directly onto their faithful customers. Let me explain...all sushi rolls (which by the way average between $15-$22 per roll) use to include a free small salad (like 1/2 iceberg lettuce and some dressing), a small cup of miso soup (about 1 cup serving), and a tiny dish of cold noodles. When they moved to their new location they did away with the noodles, disappointing, but okay. Last night my family of four went to dinner. Before even being seated, we were told that they no longer give away free salad and soup with every roll, but you could request it for a couple dollars more. On the table there was a sheet that explains that due to kitchen staff shortage, soup and salad is no longer free, but can be ordered. It is not advertised on the menu, you must ask for it. They offer very little in the form of hot dishes, all bento boxes and hot noodle dishes were scratched out on the menu, which our waiter again explained was due to not having enough staff. Again, he pointed out the free soup and salad was done away with because they do not have enough cooks in the kitchen. My kids love the soup and salad, and we get that business are struggling, so we went ahead and ordered the soup and salad for "a couple dollars more." Let me tell you what a "couple dollars more" is to Sushi Ya. $5 per soup and $4 per salad. Let me add that these portions are no bigger then the portions they gave away for free previously. So their struggle with the lack of cooks in the kitchen cost my family an additional $36 on our tab. Apparently their lack of cooks, extremely limited menu, and slow service now costs the customers more. I don't see how this business plans to survive by charging the customer significantly more, to receive less with slower service. After years of being a faithful customer at Sushi Ya, we'll be looking for a new sushi place elsewhere. The rolls were good, but the rest of it was less then desirable. read more

Menu has lots of things crossed off. No more tempura or bento box options. Normally our nigiri would come first before rolls and entree, tonight everything came at the same time with two rolls being squished onto one plate. Sesame chicken did come in giant bowl (so good portion) but it was barely warm and seemed greasy with little flavor. Not sure what has happened to this place as it used to be one of our favoritesfor sushi night. Atmosphere was also lacking - parents who let their kids blast tablets and phones should maybe consider actually interacting with them or getting a sitter instead.
