Valentine's dinner with my sweetheart. Sushi Garden never disappoints. Still the number 1 sushi restaurant in Alaska and the cinnamon tea is heavenly as always!

Very friendly Korean lady greeted me. After taking my take out order, she seated me at the bar with a cup of hot tea. The atmosphere was nice (quiet, not super bright, and clean). Ordered the envy and crunch rolls. The envy was awesome. The crunch roll was on par with other crunch rolls. Both rolls had more filling (less rice) than usual which was great. When my order was done (which including a complementary cup of miso soup) the elderly lady wished me a nice Sunday. She seemed like a super sweet lady and she made my day. Definitely a place to check out in south Anchorage!

Sushi here is great. It is fairly expensive compared to other local places but convenient if you live near Huffman / South Anchorage. I am giving 4 stars because I have gotten some Of their combo boxes and was not a fan of their Chicken Teriyaki and a few other combos. The soup is good, but their salads are usually really watered down so lacking a lot of flavor. Service is great. They are attentive and fast. Food comes out quickly. I like sitting at the sushi bar and just letting the Chef whip up whatever he's in the mood of making for me. Never had a bad piece of sushi. Would recommend!

Sweet shorty roll and ikura sushi

It pains me to update a review to give a lower rating than the initial review, but sometimes places go downhill. I came here again for the first time in years and was overall disappointed. The pros: The interior is clean and comfortable. You get miso soup, salad, and warm hand towels, which not many sushi restaurants do these days. The waitresses are a little *too* attentive in my opinion. When I was there, several of them wehovering around at any given moment. Also we got the check before my boyfriend got his food, but they took it away when I said his food hadn't arrived yet. Minor mistake but a little awkward. Sweet Shorty roll: Disappointingly small slices of fish on top, hardly any mango sauce. Imitation crab unfortunately. Felt like grocery store sushi. Ikura sushi: Advertised as $7.85 on the menu but ended up being $11.95 on the check so they need to update their menu prices. I know Alaska restaurant prices tend to be more expensive than other states but this is ridiculous. I can get the same thing in the lower 48 for half price for better quality and portion size. It was decent enough. Chicken katsu don: Waitress felt need to explain difference between this and regular chicken katsu (this comes in a bowl with chicken katsu on top of rice and vegetables with an egg whereas katsu comes with just rice) even though it's clearly written in the menu, but maybe that's because of other customers not knowing the difference. This was far better than the sushi. Tempura green tea ice cream: Not bad, a little heaving on the breading in my opinion. I wouldn't come here again except maybe for the chicken katsu don, but if another restaurant in town has it I'd rather go there.

Nice atmosphere and love that they give you warm hand towels in the beginning. Service can be slow at times, especially if they're super busy but they are all very nice. Love the miso soup and salad. The salad isn't the usual carrot dressing they use at other sushi restaurants, it was a vinegar based dressing so seems healthier! Chirashi: some of the fish was fresh, especially the salmon. It was melt in your mouth salmon! The texture of the tuna and yellowtail were a little bit more rough and didn't taste quite as fresh. The sushi rice under the fish had too much sesame oil. Sukiyaki: the soup was good and sweet but the beef was rough and well overcooked. It is a large portion, definitely shareable between 2-3 people. Overall, a decent sushi place if you need a quick sushi fix!

Not worth it. Food is not even that good but they charge so much. Won't be ordering from here again.

I really liked the way they had the inside decor, it was really set up nicely. I was looking at the beverage menu saw, Sapporo, okay great beer for a Sushi experience. I guess after looking over the Sushi offerings, it was hard to find a clean roll. Clean roll, to me means, no imitation crab in their roll. The one clean roll was the Spider Roll which we got 2 of. Of the 5 rolls we got the Spider was the favorite to me, I got the Hot Lava Roll not my favorite, but my wife ordered the Crazy Devil Roll it was good, and another clean roll was what my daughter got the 911 Roll. We all shared amongst the 3 of us. Something else missing was, miso soup or a ginger salad staples at Japanese Sushi places. Daughter's husband got Teriyaki Chicken, not a sushi guy Lol! I did get him to eat 1/2 a Spider Roll piece. Overall a 3.5 for Sushi, but ambiance 4.5. What I'd like more is clean sushi offerings, Naruto style, and a must have Unagi (Eel), Sweet Shrimp w/deep fried heads, Toro (Yellow Fin Tuna), and maybe some Alaskan Crab! Imitation crab is for newbie/beginners. Also too many offerings of cooked Tempura Shrimp added to many raw rolls. Elevate your Sushi Game!

I had the dragon roll. It's basically a California roll with eel on top. I enjoyed the crunch of the cucumber and the glaze was perfect and not too sweet. The sesame chicken was not on the menu but we were still able to order it. Even though it was coated in a honey sauce, the breaded chicken was still crunchy. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was very juicy and tender. The server was very nice and efficient.

On a cold day, this…read moreis exactly the kind of meal that makes sense--warming, steady, and satisfying without trying too hard. The space has a modern Japanese minimalist aesthetic--clean lines, warm lighting, and a refined calm that feels both welcoming and quietly upscale. It's thoughtfully designed without being cold, striking a balance between contemporary elegance and comfort. Shabu-shabu here is on the pricier side, but the portioning justifies it. The small shabu-shabu easily feeds three to four people, especially when shared properly, and nothing about it felt skimpy or rushed. Three visits in, it continues to deliver!

We used to come here when this place was Peter's Sushi Spot, the inside has not changed hugely…read moresince then, except maybe for the hot plates on the tables, should you wish to have shabu shabu. The hot plates are spotlessly clean, I did notice, and there were instructions on the wall on how to cook shabu shabu. We used to come for the Tempura Udon which was spectacular. We were seated very quickly, and water was brought out. I decided to go with my benchmark dish, which always gives me some idea of whether I will return or not, and ordered chicken fried rice, husband got the tempura udon, so he could compare with the previous Udon we used to get here. I noticed that their soft drinks are only $2 which is an excellent price in my opinion. I got a Canada Dry as I love ginger ale. His Udon came out quite quickly, and we could instantly tell that the broth did not have the same depth of flavour, as when we used to come here, (it was quite smoky and very umami) and this one has a distinctly seaweed tang. Thats not to say that it's bad, it's just different. The noodles are also not quite so dense, chewy or toothsome. Additionally the tempura was somewhat of a letdown. The shrimps were very slimline compared to the display on the tv. There was an onion ring, that was also quite thin. Just not a good representation of tempura. Also, comparing with the Udon that used to be here, you also got a cup of miso soup, and a small salad with a carrot orange dressing. Those are gone. As for my chicken fried rice, well the presentation was excellent, it came on a beautiful plate, and looked very appetizing. The first couple of bites were really nice, plenty of carrots, broccoli, chicken, however I soon started encountering tender crisp onions. Which I cannot eat. They give me violent stomach pains. I can only eat onions that have been cooked down to almost mush. Anything raw or that has any element of crunch to it is a no-go, as it will make me ill. I found it somewhat unusual, as I get fried rice all over town and have never encountered chunky onions before. I'm sure I could have asked them to leave them out had I known they were going to be in there. It tasted good, for sure, but having to continually move the onions aside (and there was a lot of onions) was offputting. Normally when i get fried rice, I eat some, and take the rest in a to go box. I did not take the rest home this time which is very telling. Anyway, service was excellent, and they were very attentive - for instance our server saw that my husband was giving me a spoonful of his udon, and without being asked he came over with an extra spoon, small bowl, and a ladle, which I thought was very thoughtful. I cannot fault the staff.
