Sashimi omasake
Alexis S.

As someone who takes sushi seriously, I make it a point to try it wherever I go. So when a friend suggested this place, I thought--why not? The vibe was cozy and intimate, with some semi-private seating that added a nice touch. The lighting was dim, setting a mellow, romantic mood. Service was decent, though it took a bit for anyone to take our drink order. I shared a lychee sake--light, smooth, and something I'd definitely order again. For food, I went with the sashimi omakase (I think that's what it was called), which came with four types of sashimi and a choice between a California roll or a crunch roll. I picked the crunch roll. The sashimi was fresh and tasty, but the salmon stole the show--melt-in-your-mouth buttery. I kind of wish I had just gotten a full order of that. I also tried the Apollo 11 roll, but it didn't quite launch for me. Not bad, just not memorable--and my sushi standards are sky-high. It's a cute little spot, and I'm glad I checked it out. Would I come back? Maybe--but next time, I'm sticking with the sashimi. That fish was the star of the show.

I've lived in Anchorage for years and must've driven past Sushi Ya dozens of times without even realizing it was there. But now that I've found it, I'm so glad I did! My goal is to try all the sushi restaurants in Anchorage, and so far, this one is at the top of my list. The atmosphere here is perfect--calm, relaxing, and ideal for a date night, a romantic getaway, or just a quiet dinner where you can actually have a conversation. One of the first things I noticed (and appreciated) was how the menu is divided between hot rolls and cold rolls. A lot of sushi places make you figure that out on your own, so this little touch made ordering so much easier. Now, let's talk about the sushi itself--incredible. I love exotic rolls, and the ones I picked out delivered that perfect sushi experience--that feeling when you take the first bite and it's like a flavor explosion in your mouth. I honestly want to try every single roll on the menu at this point. The staff was also fantastic--super helpful in guiding me through the menu since it was my first time here. I always love pairing sushi with hot sake, and while they did have it, it was just a standard option. I would've loved to see more varieties because hot sake with cold sushi is one of the best combinations ever. Also, if your waiting for your date, there is not a place for you to wait inside. See you might as well wait in your car. They want to see you right away. One of the most unique and exciting things about Sushi Ya? The private dining setup. This is the first restaurant I've ever been to where you can pull down a blind and have complete privacy between you and your date. That was such a fun and intimate touch--it made the experience even more special. The prices were fair and what you'd expect for good sushi. Final Verdict: If you're looking for an amazing sushi spot in Anchorage, whether for a romantic night out or just a relaxing dinner, Sushi Ya is a must-visit. I'll definitely be back--and working my way through the entire menu!

Boyfriend roll & hidden dragon roll

Loved our dinner at sushi ya! Super delicious sushi. Obsessed with the hidden dragon roll i ordered, the fried eel on top was the perfect crisp. I know I'll continue to think about this roll!! Overall the service was good, we were seated quickly. But it was a bit difficult to get our waitresses attention!

Very good sushi! Good service for a very busy weekend night, we got right in without a reservation. The atmosphere was very pleasant and chill. I really enjoyed my time there!

Terriyaki Beef

Well, it's not starting out very positive! The waiter had to be prodded to even explain what was offered, no explanations of what is offered, extra, included, etc. Asked for tea and we were served hot water the tea was so weak! Miso with invisible tofu. The terriakyi beef was tough, grissle, and tasteless( they cover this up with an over abundance of bottled sauce. Do yourself and your tastebuds a break AVOID!

I wasn't super impressed with the sushi this round - I've only been a hand full of times but this round was ehhhhh. We started with miso soup, which was delish && some edamame. Then we got the monkey brain which was weird.... To say the least. It was way different from any that I've ever had before. I think the mushroom was just over cooked and too large for the dish - it was just not that great - we didn't eat all of it. The house fried rice was sup good tho! Sushi was good tho. But the service was on point! I'm usually a person who will like a place if the service was on point && the food was okay - I just know their food is better tho. Do better!

The oysters were some of the best I've had! I ordered the scallops as well as two others and we thought these were Gordon Ramsey approved!! My spouse had the Mahi and he said he wouldn't order it again said it was a little fishy. Others ordered the grilled pork chop and the plates were pretty clean when finished so I would say excellent. We shared a couple bananas foster with ice cream and then topped off dinner with the cafe Diablo which is always a treat. With most of us happy with our meal I would say it was a 4 out of 5! Highly recommend coming here for a special occasion.

We were traveling for business and trying to squeeze three people into the bar area, so we knew it might be a bit of a challenge. We eventually made it work, but service took a while to get rolling. That said, once it did start, it got really good. Our server FraniP did a great job. It took a little bit for her to engage and warm up with us, but once she did, she was attentive, friendly, and made the experience feel much more welcoming. Food-wise, we were impressed. Two of us ordered the burger and it was honestly excellent--made with a blend of ribeye and tenderloin, and you could taste the difference. Really well constructed and flavorful. I went with the mushroom soup and a Caesar salad, and both were solid choices; fresh, satisfying, and better than your average "safe" menu items. The cocktail selection was also strong, but the smoked old fashioned was way too sweet. It needed to be toned down on the sugar to let the bourbon and smoke shine through. Overall: great food, great drinks selection, and a good bar atmosphere.. just be prepared for a slower start on service during peak nights.

Each dish was different and excellent, albeit the ravioli was essentially fancy mozzarella sticks. Not a lot of crab for the price, but it is market price after all-- hit or miss. When we arrived there was no one at the host stand for a solid five minutes. Other staff walked right past us without so much as a "someone will be right with you," which set a pretty uncomfortable tone right off the bat. We eventually got seated, but even with the restaurant being pretty empty it still took a while before a server showed up to the table. Our server wasn't rude or anything, but the energy was just completely flat. It felt like he could not care less about being there. Sodas got refilled once the entire night. Between being seated and appetizers, and again between appetizers and our entrees, he was basically nowhere to be found. The thing that really got me was being asked if we wanted boxes while our plates were still full and we were just sitting there having a conversation, never once offering to top off our drinks until we finally asked. It's a shame because the food really was solid and the restaurant itself has a nice warm vibe to it. ORSO clearly has a lot going for it and on a different night with more attentive service it could easily be a 4 or 5 star experience. For now it's hard to rate it higher than a 3 when the service makes what should be a really nice dinner feel like an afterthought.

I like their menu because it has a good variety, and the food is pretty solid overall. The dine-in service has generally been good, and the restaurant itself looks clean, modern, and comfortable. That said, the takeout experience has almost always been on the slower side throughout the years, so that is one area I think they could improve. Still, Phonatik is one of the better pho restaurants in Anchorage. I really think they have a lot of potential, but they may need to step up their game a bit to become truly outstanding.

Our table had hoisin sauce, sriracha and a pot of chili oil. There was oil on the underside of the pot of chili oil though, which was a cleanliness issue. Our family got the all shrimp fresh rolls, a seafood pho, a mixed beef pho and a small kid size chicken pho. We also tried the hazy IPA beers on tap. Notes on the food: the rolls were okay. The peanut sauce was a touch too thick and lacked dimension in flavor. Ingredients inside the rolls were fresh but would've been improved with a little mint, basil, or other fresh herb. Seafood pho was decent, but I longed for a fish ball, fish cake, or other item besides the imitation krab. I picked out the squid because it was too chewy. Our server was cheerful and pleasant, and parking was super easy just outside the front door. Might be back if in the area but I think will continue my pho search elsewhere next time that pho craving hits.
