I'm a pretty big sushi fan, and moved recently to the area. I've been going around trying to find decent sushi for a cheap(ish) price, and though the service here was okay, the food wasn't. I probably would have went to another restaurant if I wasn't as hungry as I was. I ordered 5 different roles (roles I have gotten many times from other sushi restaurants) and none of them were good. They add sauces to make it look fancy, but it really wasn't great. The pictures on the menus look like they were taken from an iPhone with super bad lighting. Although I took the alternative route and only ordered the veggie rolls.... the other 3 people in the group opted to go all out and feast on as much as they could. Sadly to say, only after one order(7 rolls) they gave in. I cant speak for their rolls, but the veggie selection was minimal yet tasted oh so right. We shall return again....and go all out. The staff was very nice and the location is convenient, right off the freeway. They also have some creative rolls and unlike many places, even I could handle their spicy tuna (I'm a wimp). Another plus, my sushi loving 5 year old was only $5. The issue really comes with the quality and freshness of the fish. Even the best sushi chef can't do much if the ingredients aren't great. Maybe cooked fish can get away with that but with sushi freshness and quality are key. In the end there are better places in the area and I will pick one of them instead. read more

We visited Sushi Ya on a Saturday night at 5, and pretty much had the place to ourselves. My husband and his friend ordered the all you can eat and ate about 5 rolls, each. They were stuffed! I ordered two rolls ala cart, since the $20 all you can eat wasn't cost effective for me. I had the Caterpillar roll and a Spicy Tuna and both were very good! My family and I eat cheap sushi, a lot, and this was better and fresher tasting than what we usually get (for much cheaper). The restaurant was fun, clean, and the service was great! One kid in our group did not like the chicken fingers, they came out looking just like tempura shrimp. If you have a picky eater, you might avoid that. We waited at least 5min to be acknowledged we were waiting to be seated. When we ordered they put all the food to the far end of the table for us to move around. I'll admit the price of the all-you-can-eat is great. Sushi is OK. Lots of rice, questionable fish quality. The only problem, albeit a huge one, is the service. It is absolutely horrible. For starters they have no idea what table ordered what. We went on a double date and I got half of the rolls I ordered and my wife got 1 (she had ordered 3). We sat for about 45 minutes waiting to see if they would bring out her other rolls after we had gotten our partial orders. We decided we should just order some more instead because they seem busy. Nobody came to grab our orders, we tried flagging down the waitresses but they ignored us. After awhile we said screw it let's go eat some where else. When we went up to pay we told the hostess/waitress we are not paying for all-you-can-eat for my wife because they had literally only brought her a single roll. She tried arguing with us that they were still making it, etc (we had been there for almost 2 hours at this point. Our initial order was taken an hour and a half before, and many people had came and left while we sat and waited for food that never came). They did the same exact thing to the other couple we were with too. I would honestly recommend staying away from this place. Terrible quality of food and horrible service. I've eaten here twice and thrown up for hours afterwards both times. Almost everyone I know who has been here has left disappointed and sick, no clue how the health department hasn't closed the doors yet. My husband and I are regulars because this is the BEST all you can eat sushi! The Rocky Mountain, 49er, and King Kong are killer rolls. The salmon nigiri and seared tuna are dynamite. My husband's 4 favorite words are all you can eat so when I noticed this place last week I thought we had to try it and I'm so glad we did. We went at 3pm on Sat afternoon and there were several other groups there. I thought that was a good sign. They have a great selection of at least 30 different rolls and about 15 types of nigiri. We loved everything we tried! The Las Vegas roll was our favorite; crab, salmon, avacado, ??, tempura dipped, served with eel sauce. It was amazing and I find myself craving it now. You don't have to decide on all you can eat right up front. Just order what you'd like and when you've reached the point where you've paid the all you can price they tell you that you can order anything more you want and you won't pay anything extra. My husband, my son and I went there to try it out for once because we normally go to Koi. Well at first their greetings was very friendly... we order few sushi and they did not have any flavor and the veg. could taste old. I had teriyaki chicken with rice, it came with soup and salad. The soup taste flat and the salad was okay. The teriyaki chicken was a little dry, my son did not even like the chicken either... The services stink they did not check on us to see if we need anything, I was waiting for more drink and ask for more napkins...All I could see them chatting in front desk and checking on the computer while the others working their butt off. After waiting about 15 min, the girl came to pick up the dishes it was when I got their attention and asked for more drink. We made a big mistake coming to this place, we will not come back... Premise: all-you-can-eat sushi is as good an idea as cut-rate eye surgery. Evidence: Sushi Ya I've not seen such flaccid, uninspiring tubular victual drenched in sticky, cloying sauce since [insert your own joke here]. We had several of the signature rolls such as the Godzilla and Jason. What looked like a crime-punching league of superheroes on the menu turned out to be a rogues' gallery of food that was clearly made by somebody who was overworked and just didn't care. Rolls were coming apart at the seams, spilling contents all over the cheap plastic plates they were served on. Somebody somewhere along the way told the chef that his unagi sauce was particularly good. That person should be flogged, as it now makes an appearance on dishes that don't mention it on the menu as an element. We tried some non-signature rolls as well and they were no better. It would be worth skipping your sushi cravings three times and going to Takashi instead or, alternately, spending about the same money and going to Sushi Express. read more

I think my review will be a little different. Me and my bf wen there for dinner. The price was $18 for all you can eat sushi, which is a little cheaper than in Salt Lake City. The sushi was really great, can't complain! My bf knows one of the sushi chefs so we mostly ate his creations which were delicious! I did have a hurricane roll off the menu, it was good too, but not as amazing as the chefs personal rolls. The service on the other hand.... the waitress only came once... when she seated us originally. I had to ask another waiter for a glass of water since we never came back. This place is always kind of slow, but today was ridiculous. We often go for their all-you-can-eat lunch. It takes a while... but today we waited more than 15 minutes between our first and second plates, and then everyone in the restaurant disappeared for nearly half an hour. No food, no water, no check-ins. Upon paying the bill we were told the slow (nonexistant) service was intentional punishment because we were saving our rice. A) they don't tell you you can't save your rice when you order and B) regardless of what your customer is doing/has done, do not ignore them. I am giving this place three stars because it used to be our favorite sushi place, but I agree with the other recent reviews. The quality, cleanliness, and service has dropped so badly. Brought in guests for their first visit and their first impression was a stinky, filthy koi pond in need of serious tlc. Sat down and noticed the chairs and floor were covered in dried up food spills. Had to wipe gunk of seat to sit. Went to use restroom and it was absolutely gross. My biggest complaint was that there were so few staff and a restaurant FULL of people. We ordered, food took forever, part of order was missing, no one ever came back - we ended up having to go ask to pay so we could leave. You can't order all you can eat sushi if no one comes back to your table. While leaving we passed two other parties leaving because no one came to their table or they never got food after almost an hour?? I really like the owner and hope they get it together and are worth visiting again. I am wondering if it is just an issue with service on Friday and Saturday nights. All the other times we've gone it was a weekday. This place was one of the best and I hope it is again. read more

We have given this place more than a fair chance (twice for lunch and at least four dinners), but after today's lunch I think we'll just call it quits. Even from our first visit, the service was inexcusably sub-par. Some reviewers have said it was better initially, but our first time there was within their first 6 months open, the place was virtually empty on a weeknight and we still felt like we were an imposition on our waiter. Our waitress today had only one other table to attend to and we still had to go retrieve her for drink refills and remind her to bring us ginger as well as what our orders were. For their price of all-you-can-eat sushi, however, we always figured it was worth the risk of having another fairly poor service experience. Our mistake. What made today the last straw was the fact that we had to wait nearly twenty minutes for just our first two rolls and eight pieces of nigiri to arrive (the restaurant was a little less than half full). The next round took nearly as long, but at least we put a little more on that round since it was obvious by then that we were facing yet another one of those poor service days. The kitchen being slow one day or the wait staff being slow on another is one thing, but when both are regularly neglectful we refuse to continue rewarding poor business practices. The sushi itself is, of course, what first drew us in and what also now has us saying farewell. Our Godzilla roll was almost all rice inside with a minuscule cube of fish that had a very "fishy" taste; shockingly strong for how little there was. The salmon in today's Rainbow roll had tough, chewy blocks of fat that had to be deposited in napkins - sorry, I know that's gross. This place could certainly turn it around, but until I see these reviews take that turn to show they've seen the error of their ways, we are done with the Layton/Clearfield Sushi Ya and definitely don't recommend it to anyone as it is. read more

We tried this place on the recommendation of a friend who used to live here. We were extremely disappointed. Our waitress was very friendly, but couldn't make up for the crappy food. We ordered miso soup, which was sub par. It didn't even have tofu in it. We ordered albacore and got regular tuna. We still ate it, but only after lifting up the fish to remove some of the giant ball of rice underneath. My husband ordered upside down shrimp, which was a soupy mess and totally fell apart. He had to use his soup spoon to try to eat it. He had the same problem with his hand roll and finally just gave up. All the rolls were overly packed with extremely dry rice, particularly the King Kong, which looked like big dice with little pieces of fish in a sea of rice. None of the rolls were particularly good and even more disappointing, the rice wasn't even cooked properly. In every roll, we kept crunching down on pieces of rice with hard centers. This was a total waste of $40 for awful sushi for 2. We would not eat here again. read more

We live close by to Sushi Ya and love getting sushi there. It is affordable and the service is great! We have never had any issues getting the service we expect. The location used to be kind of tricky to find, but due to new road construction it's become easier to navigate to. I hope they never go out of business because their spicy crunch roll is to die for. read more

I don't know what happened to this place but they need to do something about it to turn it around. I honestly, thought it was okay when they first opened. The only good thing about it is that they do have an 'All you can Eat' deal for $20. The presentation is just a sad & messy sight for sore eyes. Far from being authentic, because REAL Japanese food have a visual appeal to it; I understand it is a buffet like atmosphere but the sushi shouldn't just crumble when barely touching it with your chopsticks. First things first. All you can eat sushi is only about $20 here. I've paid $15-20 for a single roll of outstanding sushi at other reputable joints... and been completely fine with it. On the whole however, I am usually a frugal (my wife would argue that I am just cheap) eater, so long as the grub doesn't taste bad. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you will pay $20 and be enjoying grade A sushi.... you will be sorely disappointed with the outcome. You also won't be eating bad sushi... but more of a C+ or B- grade meal. The food was fresh and enjoyable enough to go back. Just remember you are getting what you pay for. We ordered take out and picked it up last night, but we were still charged extra fees for carrying out..i'm not sure what the fees were for, (they packed it to go??). The rolls were decent sized/well packed, but were pretty bland & flavorless. The Spicy Tuna, however, was soooo hot, it was basically inedible. Bad service, bad sushi. If you enjoy lots of k-rab, cream cheese, and mayonnaise with no spice at all, this is the place for you. Hurricane roll described as "spicy crab with dynamite sauce" = krab in mayo with no spice topped with warm mayonnaise. Rocky mountain = chewy, over cooked, extremely fishy scallops. playboy roll was ok Rainbow roll = no idea, they didn't bother bringing it and the service was so incredibly slow and inattentive that I wasn't about to wait and find out. When I talked to an employee about the issues with our rolls his response was, "the rocky mountain is a favorite" and "oh yeah, the hurricane isn't actually spicy" Absolutely nothing was done to rectify the situation so I paid forty dollars for essentially one roll...we only ate the playboy. This is my favorite sushi on the Wasatch front. Yes, really. It is well priced for an all-you-can-eat sushi place. My only complaint is the wait time in between rounds of sushi, but the sushi is so well done and they have such a good selection that you forget about that. Went here with my husband, where we met up with our friends. We loved the rolls, I got the Rock n Roll and Happy roll. Our friends got a Las Vegas. We also got an appetizer of shrimp tempura, all the food was really good. The only thing is the service could be much better. We waited for our friends for a bit and the waitress checked on us when we first got in but took maybe 20-25 mins before she checked on us again. We had to flag her down to order our appetizer, and I understand when a place is busy but they were not. Doesn't seem like she enjoys her job but she still fulfills her duties just sufficiently. read more

I was born in Japan, raised in Japan and the US. I've made, taught, and catered sushi for over 60 years. Needless to say, I've eaten sushi all my life and say it's my favorite food. The sushi I got here was an embarrassment!! The rice on the nigiri was much too big - eat two pieces and you are full - and the fish and the topping were either of low quality or too small. All you can eat sushi is usually not good, especially when its cheap all you can eat sushi. But, sometimes you can order off the menu from all you can eat sushi place and its good. This is not the case at sushi ya. We waited at the front for a long time while servers walked passed us trying not to make eye contact. Just before we were about to leave one looked up at us from the cash register and pointed to a table across the restaurant. Lol. We should have known it would only get worse. We ordered two plates of sashimi, one roll, one hand roll, and one order of takoyaki. Then we sat for 45 minutes waiting, which is a long time when you consider half of our order was sliced raw fish with no sauce. It looks like there was only one guy making the sushi. The server brought out everything except instead of hand roll, normal maki. I told her I ordered a hand roll and she assured me I didn't and pointed to the little slip of paper as proof. The only problem was SHE filled out the paper not me. I reminded her of this and she said oh well we don't have that. It would have been nice to know this when I ordered it. The sashimi was ok quality except escolar which is trash fish used as filler by low quality sushi places. Takoyaki tasted alright, not great, but was under cooked and raw dough inside. I had to wave down the server who was again ignoring us to ask for the check to get out of this place. I won't be back. But, the crazy thing is, every table was full and there was a waiting line when we left. So many people in Utah are willing to eat low quality sushi because its cheap.
