We came here for dinner to meet a friend who lives in the area. The restaurant is in a Publix plaza and has lots of parking. The dining room decor is clean and attractive with lots of red and black. There were four of us. And the menu was humungous. It took us a while to decide on what to order. We got two appetizers: the fried calamari and the Happy pancake. The calamari was chewy and the pancake was smaller than expected and except for two shrimp on top, we didn't see many on the inside, even the veggies were skimpy. For dinner we had the cashew chicken, the shrimp tempura and chicken teriyaki combo, the fishing boat for one, and a special dish of squid stuffed with seafood. The teriyaki was cold. And my friend said the tempura shrimp was squishy. The cashew chicken was good. The stuffed calamari was fried, not grilled as listed. And all the seafood ingredients that were advertised were chopped very fine and stuffed into the calamari rings and were not recognizable. The fishing boat for one had an array of sashimi and sushi and featured salmon, tuna, and white fish. The sashimi was a little chewy. The spicy tuna rolls were good. Service was excellent. Too bad the food was mediocre and didn't measure up. Dinner for 4 with 2 appetizers, 4 entrees, 4 cans of soda, tax, and tip was about $200. read more

I came here for lunch and I was quite impressed with their specials. I chose the pick three very reasonably priced. I ordered a salad it was fresh, then I got a spicy tuna roll, Mexican roll and vegetable pad Thai. It was a lot of food so I did take the pad Thai home. We decided to stop by Sushi Yama today on the spur of the moment. We have been here a few times several years ago and somehow never made it back in a while. We were pleasantly surprised as a service was extremely friendly and helpful. The ambience was comfortable and most importantly, the sushi rolls we ordered along with a Nam Sod salad was very good We ordered the volcano roll, a tuna roll, a shrimp tempura roll and the crispy salmon roll. Sushi Yama! Let me paint you a picture: First bite of the salmon belly sushi and I nearly made eye contact with the chef to say 'Sir, you've done it again.' Delectable doesn't even do it justice--it was buttery, rich, and straight-up seductive. The chicken Katsu? Crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and so good it had us questioning every life choice that led to us not ordering two. Naturally, we were vibing with Saratoga water because we're fancy like that(not really). Hydration, but make it premium. If you're not sipping Saratoga while eating sushi, are you even living? Then came the Big Bang Shrimp--aptly named because each bite was an explosion of flavor and shrimpy greatness. Big. Hearty. The shrimp equivalent of a bear hug. Now, the Gyoza... listen. It was good. It did what it came to do. But we made the rookie mistake of going deep-fried instead of pan fried, and you could taste the missed opportunity. That one's on us. Still solid, just not the main character energy we were hoping for. All in all? A flavorful fever dream of a meal. And is true! The owner and servers were so friendly and good services . They don't just served sushi is also Thai foods as well. Everything here was so tasty and yummy! As much as I wish I loved the sushi here - quality is declining at a steady pace. Are their new owners? I have an issue with the extended time spent to receive your food once you place your order. The delay in service has gotten really out of hand waiting up to :45 if not more minutes for 3 rolls to come. My other issue and BIGGEST issue is - I contest stale sushi. Don't serve me lunches left overs. Having rolls waiting on the side before adding final preparation. So I wait for 45 min to receive a cold roll that was supposed to come out of the fryer since it's tempura. It should be served hot on the outside and colder on THE inside. You're losing customers due to these factors. There is a lot of potential but seems to be going downhill. The server disappears and doesn't bring food until you ask for it. Hot tempura rolls not served hot are clearly not freshly cooked. No other explanation. You have room to improve. Community agrees. read more

Food is phenomenal with such great price. Everytime I eat here, my partner and I both get 1-2 sushi rolls, 2 soups, 1big dish of fried rice, and a round of drinks and it always comes out to $50-60 for the entire meal! We'd been here many years ago when one of our then favorite places in the center was closed for vacation. I have to say that this visit was better. And frankly, my husband's meal was a much better choice than mine, this time. There is plenty of parking out front in the lot. It gets kind of busy because of the Publix grocery store nearby as well as a number of other restaurants on this corner. It's cool and the lights seem blue and a bit dark when you first enter. We were seated in a booth. I had to use my flashlight to read the menu, but that's not a big problem. I'm used to doing that. The menu is quite large. They don't tell you about their specials. You have to turn to the back page. They have a number of lunch specials from which to choose. They are reasonably priced. They come with your choice of soup or salad. I chose the lunch special with beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura. I started with their salad. It was a bowl of iceberg lettuce and carrot shreds and a grape tomato. They are very generous with the ginger dressing. And we both liked it. The lunches come in a bento box. Mine had about eight slices of beef topped with teriyaki sauce along with one piece of broccoli. In another compartment were two pieces of tempura battered shrimp along with one large round slice of a tempuraed sweet potato. Another compartment had a scoop of white rice; another some pickled bean sprouts; and the last a wedge of a fresh orange. The beef was good, the shrimp just so so, the sweet potato good. And I didn't care for the cold bean sprouts. My husband also had the salad to start. His bento box had a four-piece California roll; three pieces of sushi; six pieces of sashimi; and a mound of seafood sunimono salad with octopus et al. It also had those cold bean sprouts and the same orange wedge. It was very good and very fresh. And an excellently priced lunch. I'd go back again if in the area, but I'd choose a different option. My friends and I had stopped her for dinner after coming back from the Renaissance Festival. We got seated right away for our large group and we got served our drinks. I ordered the chicken spring rolls which were delicious and had the Sushi Yama roll and the Honeymoon Roll. The Sushi Yama roll was the best one as it was wrapped in a crepe! It was an interesting combination. The service started off great but two of my friends didn't get their food on time and they were getting upset. By the time their plate's arrived I was already done with mine, and when we wanted to close out our waitress was nowhere to be found. We had to wait for some time for her to return. First, I found the menu to be overwhelming and complicated to read and understand. Admittedly, it was my first time here looking at the menu, but the others in the group also had the same experience. We went for some "safe" items which were in the menu and we weee familiar with them from other restaurants. We had pad thai with chicken. It was very tasty, although a thick somewhat sweet sauce covering the noodles made me wonder how many calories and carbs there were. The chicken - thick chunks - was tasty. At $14.95 it seemed to be high priced for the portion size. The seaweed salad was fresh and a nice size. It had some "stuff@ which didn't look like seaweed, and it was tasty and reasonably priced at $6.95. The Saratoga Sparkling water had lots of bubbles and was icy cold. But, at almost $5. For a small bottle, it was exorbitantly priced. We order bottled water at all the restaurants we dine at and I know the pricing. The chop sticks were slick, and a bit diffuse to hold. The cloth napkins were not all cotton. They must have been some polyester stuff, as they were all shiny and slippery and I could not get it to stay on my lap or tucked into my shirt. It was very annoying. I am accustomed to Frette linens. KAT was our server. She was professional, warm and engaged us in conversation. She was the highlight of the meal!! See her pic. By only a 3 star rating. Pricing too high. PLUS But more importantly. There was a woman sitting at a table next to us with her cute dog on the table, drinking from a glass of water (appeared to be tap water!). When I asked her if I could take a pic she snapped back "NO". Don't think I'm a dog hater. I'm a dog lover and have one who I cherish. But management should allow its patrons to sit their dogs on the table where people eat. NO BUENO Would I go back? Ah. Came in here the other night for dinner with my son. It was after 8:00 and the restaurant was busy. The hostess sat us immediately. That was the last time anyone came to the table. We looked over the menu and decided what to order so when the server would come to the table, we'd be ready. 20 minutes later...still no one. Not even an acknowledgement. Looked at 2 other tables next to us and noticed they had drinks and no food. Knew that wasn't a good sign, so I went on my phone to order take-out and it was a 65 -90 minute wait. Needless to say, we walked out and no one even noticed. I've always had a love-hate relationship with Sushi Yama. Sometimes it can be great and other times it's horrible. As a note to the owners...if you know you're slammed and can't accommodate your customers, say something. A manager should know what's going on. If someone just would have stopped by the table with water and explained they weren't prepared to have some many people, we would have understood and most likely stayed. read more

We go here every other day, but today the soups had raw shrimp and chicken when we asked to change it all they did was microwave it and brought it back at tha point we have been waiting for 3 hours and the manager only took half off on one out of 3 soups very disrespectful they need to change that customer service. on top of everything it was my wife's birthday, so probably never going to come here again after that. after I asked to take some off on the price of the soup, I was told that we already ate the soup and I said yes because we waited for three hours. I've been coming to this restaurant for over 14 years, and while the food has always been good, the service has declined to the point that I can no longer recommend it. Tonight was the final straw. Our server came out initially with water, then disappeared for about 10 minutes before taking my order for myself and my two sons. She brought the food out but never came back to check on us. I had asked for well-done shrimp with my shrimp fried rice, but the shrimp came out barely cooked. My sons finished their meals while I waited, expecting the server to return so I could have my shrimp cooked properly. She never did. I ended up eating just the rice and leaving the shrimp on a separate plate. Over 20 minutes after I had finished, I was about to get up to find her or a manager when I saw her walking back toward the restaurant--hands full of groceries from Publix. When she finally approached us, she said, "Is everything okay? I told them to watch you." That was shocking. Leaving your customers unattended to go grocery shopping is unacceptable, and nobody came by to "watch" us in her absence. To make matters worse, when it came time to pay, she was very quick to run my card and even quicker to swoop back and collect the signed check presenter--yet at no point did she clear any of the dirty plates from our table. The priorities were obvious, and they had nothing to do with hospitality. This restaurant has been a favorite of ours for years, especially when sitting inside in the genkan room. But lately, the service has consistently been poor. Tonight made it clear that management needs to retrain staff on basic steps of service--hospitality is the foundation of this industry. Sadly, after too many bad experiences and especially after tonight with our server, Moet, we won't be returning. Good food alone cannot make up for such unprofessional service. read more

I love this place; it happens to be one of my favorite restaurants in South Florida. The ambiance is great, the food is always delicious, and the service can be hit or miss. I had my typical green curry dish with shrimp and white rice on a spice level number four. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best dish they serve here. I also had some miso soup, which was pretty good, but I can make a better one at home. In the picture, there's a $150 sushi boat that we didn't eat, but I sure wanted it. One of the chefs was putting it together for somebody else when I happened to walk by and snap a picture. I without a doubt recommend this place over and over again. One of my favorite Thai/Japanese restaurants. I've been to so many all-Thai/all-Japanese/ and Thai-Japanese places all over south Florida and this place is still one of my default favorites. The service is consistently great. The decor is clean with a bit of swanky comfy feel. Plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. And every roll, Thai dish, and appetizers I've tried have always been spot on. Honestly, I can't even pinpoint one specific dish because pretty much everything I've ordered has not disappoint. I had a sushi lunch which included 6 pieces of nigiri and California roll which I asked to switch out for a spicy tuna. It was all SOLID! The fish quality was better than most neighborhood sushi joints. The rice was too! The ginger dressing was the best- almost anywhere! Just like Benihana which is the gold standard. Decent food ruined by terrible service. While visiting family in Boca Raton, we stopped at Sushi Yama for a meal. This restaurant offers seating options indoor and outdoor, with an atmosphere that is good for enjoying a meal with friends or family. The menu has a wide variety of dishes, making it easy to find something for everyone. The items that we ordered during our visit were all decent, nothing that stood out, but good for the price. But all the experience goes downhill the moment that you have to leave your table to find someone to take your order, and then again to find someone to get you something to drink. All in all, although Sushi Yama has a menu with options for everyone they still have to work on their service in order to provide an acceptable experience. My Criteria 5 stars: The best food I have ever had, or an excellent option given the price. 4 stars: Good food, a restaurant I look forward to trying again. 3 stars: Good food, a restaurant that I am indifferent to. 2 stars: Below average experience, will not go again. 1 stars: This restaurant should be closed. read more

We've been coming here for years but the service is not the best. Since we are "usuals" we had specific waitresses but when they aren't working the service is completely different. Why not just factor it into the price instead of nickeling and diming the customer to death? My partner and I had high hopes. I got the sushi boat for one and it was fine. Not the best I ever had, but certainly good and well presented. My partner got the chicken tempura which was the WORST! Coarsely breaded chicken "sticks" that had been obviously frozen and dumped in a fryer. The only "tempura" were the side veggies on the plate and then the asparagus was tough and woody. Nothing on the "tempura" plate tasted fresh. I told our server the chicken was not "tempura". She couldn't have cared less. We won't be back. read more
