I was not sure about how many items I could order for the menu being vegan, but found several options that I was wresting about what to order. I was considering the veggie udon and buckwheat noodle dishes, the tofu bento box and they also had some Korean dishes too like jap chae noodles and more! I was actually having a hard time deciding what to order because there was more choices than what I could shake a stick at! I ended up choosing the bibimbap and the plain fashion roll and gyoza for appetizers. The bibimbap came in a stone pot and it was pretty authentic Korean food and they had a pretty good portion. The gyoza was delicious and the veggie roll actually was better than I expected, had a lot of veggies in it like asparagus, and many hearty veggies that went well together and was quite filling and satisfying. I wasn't expecting much from a sushi place as a vegan, but I was pleased that they not only served sushi and Japanese food, but they also had Korean food in their menu items which were pretty comparable to Korean restaurants. Glad I tried this place, they had a good selection for vegans to be satisfied. Kinda pricey, but the quality was good and the portions were pretty good too. Next time I'm in Brighton, Sushi Zen would be a definite revisit to this place. read more

EXCELLENT sushi and expansive Japanese menu. I lived in Tokyo for 6 years and they do sushi correctly. Beyond the standard fare, their avocado bomb is exceptional and a spicy delight. I've had a bento here and it is plentiful and offers a solid variety of foods ordered. I once had some Korean fare and found it less than average but I would say that is not the standard for this restaurant. Once you try sushi zen you will NEVER want sushi anywhere else. My aunt has an allergy to Salmon and cannot have it, the waitress was very very kind about it and helpful, she made sure to tell the cooks multiple times she has an allergy, the people here are always kind and I love the environment. This is basic suburban sushi with delusions of grandeur. It's fine for the overloaded, overstuffed fancy novelty rolls. But the nigiri options are universal midwest basic, except for the uni they ran out of apparently moments before I tried to order. I asked for hamachi toro, and was even told that what they served was that, but it was certainly just below-par hamachi, not the slightest bit oily. The rice:fish ratio on the nigiri was far too high, and the rice was overly sticky in a way that would get a sushi bar in any major city on earth shut down. Maybe should have tried the tamago test. The decor is classy. But that was ruined by the laminated signs posted on the walls alerting customers to a 90 minute table limit. When we were done, around that mark, we were literally swept out by the server carrying a broom apparently as a prop, as she wasn't otherwise sweeping anything. At that time, before 9pm on a Monday, the place was about 20% occupied; that is, we were neither the last to leave nor did they need the table. They seemed to be enforcing the rule out of principle. Service was great, the food looked great, but when the first piece of sushi hit the tastebuds, it felt off: there was no vinegar used in the rice at all. I asked our waitress when she approached to make sure everything was fine: "Have you changed the recipe, or did the guy on the rice detail forget to add the vinegar when he made it this morning?" She asked the chefs, and was told that they hadn't changed the recipe, that it was the same as always. The last time we dined here, they used vinegared rice; this time they did not so, no it's not the same recipe. As such, the sushi was only so-so. read more

LOVE me some Sushi Zen! The first time I went I was put off initially by the fact that it's next to an O'Reilleys but it's actually very good. The sushi is always very yummy. And I love the miso soup. It's become our go-to whenever someone in the house is sick. We actually have a "family memory" of the miso soup. Food is very good! Service is good to great depending on the server. My family and I eat there all the time and my two daughters 8&12 eagerly eat til they are full espy the yellowtail and salmon. The interior is well lit although a bit more chillier than normal (so make sure to have an extra sweater). We ordered the avocado bomb for starters and it was almost too pretty to eat. Only critique I would have is I wish there was a bit more of their special sauce or spicy mayo because that would def enhance the flavors. The sliced avocados were fresh and paired well with the spicy tuna and crab meat. For the main course, we ordered the Ruby Roll (personal fav- another beautiful presentation: with Spicy tuna, avocado and tempura crunch inside, topped with seared tuna, salmon, red snapper, shrimp and crab, drizzled with eel sauce, wasabi mayo and spicy mayo, sprinkled with red tobiko ) and Diablo Roll (with Shrimp tempura, crab, avocado and cucumber inside, topped with spicy scallops, baked in oven with Colby Jack cheese, drizzled with eel sauce), and TNT Roll (Tuna, avocado and cucumber, topped with spicy mayo and sriracha). My husband and I chose to have date night here on Saturday evening. We arrived around 7 and it was about a 30 min wait, which was fine because they were very busy and to me, that's a great sign! We were seated at the bar and the ambiance was cute and casual. Our server Lisa was outstanding, she made some delicious recommendations and the quality of the fish was great. Delicious! California rolls were perfect and the teriyaki chicken had the right amount of sauce. The miso soup was also good, not too salty. Had the vanilla, mango and strawberry mochi for dessert, the only issue with it was the outer shell (for lack of a better word).
