    Shrimp tempura roll
    Rise G.

We hadn't been here for a while, since the new ownership, and we were not disappointed. Our server was super friendly and knowledgeable. We asked about a roll we used to get and she was able to tell us right away which one it was. The fish was fresh and delicious. We loved everything we ordered and will be back soon to try more.

This is a really nice sushi restaurant that is only 2 minute walk from my place. I wonder why I never noticed it before. The sushi I had was perfectly made and the waiter was very friendly and the ambiance of the place was excellent. I may come back here again sometime. If I can give them 10 stars I would.

Final days of the long and illustrious reign of Hideko, Giuseppe and Yoshi. Last night is 7/27 (don't worry, the new sushi chef is a twenty year vet and training alongside Yoshi as we speak). Thank you all for two plus decades of making Sushi Zone my favorite sushi spot in SF.

Spicy mango salmon and spicy tuna

Found a hidden gem in an alley. It was a chilly night so I decided to get some warm sake to warm me up. The area is a bit quiet but definitely worth visiting. Everything we ordered with delicious and fish was very fresh. Food highlights -Toro Toro roll - 5/5 This was my fave roll. Buttery toro with seared salmon on top. Can't ask for a better bite. -Spicy mango salmon - 4/5 not really spicy but a great roll with the hint of sweetness from the mango -Volcano - 4/5 crisp tempura crunch with spicy tuna -Walu sashimi - 5/5 this was very thickly sliced and rich. Melted in my mouth delicious. Sake avocado tartar - 4/5 solid appetizer with fresh salmon and avocado mixed in round mold. Baked bass 4/5 creamy mixture that had a nice texture from the mango and fish Stuffed jalapeno 4/5 it had nice kick with a fish mixture Ambiance Some bar seating at the chefs table and a few tables inside as well as outside. A smaller family owned sushi spot where you can get some excellent quality fish and a reasonable price. Service Staff were attentive, friendly and checked in at appropriate times. Overall I can't wait to come back to try more of the menu!

Yay they are finally open again. I work nearby and used to come here under the old management. They were closed I think for 1-2 week after the old owners retired. I was by myself and I already had dinner so I got Sashimi plate because I couldn't eat too much. Man I just wanna say the fish was prepared really well. Extra smelly liquid were extracted and the texture was very nice. Not in a fancy location or anything but will be my to-go spot again when I feel like sushi! I think they added new rolls as the new sushi chef has worked for 20 years before finally opening his shop and added his twists.

One of my favorite sushi spots in SF. The baked appetizers are great but kinda expensive. The service is top notch, and the ambiance is homey/hole in wall vibes. Would recommend the Taro Taro roll.

I've been wanting to try this place for a while -- pleasantly surprised by the quality and service! Salmon tartare and baked mussels had to be my favorite out of all the dishes we ordered. Salmon tartare was exceptionally fresh. Baked mussels were recommended by the chef and I'm so glad we got it! Not too fishy and creamy in a tasteful way. I'd skip the Hawaiian rolls and order more of salmon tartare instead! Service and ambiance were good too. Place is small but not too loud. Definitely coming back.

this is a great sushi spot in the city! I love the Hawaiian aesthetic in the restaurant and how they incorporate fruits like mango into the sushi. The mango is clearly really fresh and add extra tanginess to the sushi. Their baked mussels were also the most delicious baked seafood I've had. Service was great and the only reason I would give it four out of five is because it is still pricey. Most sushi in the city is pricey though.

The best sushi restaurant I've been ever tried before. Their service is really good and the waiter is really helpful. Baked mussels are my favorite ever. Yum yum

    Dessert!!

Wow, this place is so tiny and not your typical SF omakase style place. But, what they make up in size is delicious and fresh sushi that is affordable, filling, and top notch. We always get the same things but everything on the menu is amazing. The must gets are the baked mussels appetizers, Hawaiian Rolls (#2 is best), and spicy hamachi roll. The last is one of the best rolls I've ever eaten (the lime zest is the secret!!). Wonderful staff, very professional chefs, and fair wait list (if you're on the list before close you will be served). Definitely one of the best sushi spots in SF and the best if you're looking for value and quality!

4/5 for me Small mom and pop sushi restaurant with great service and high quality fish. We didn't, but I would try to sit at the bar if you can. It looked like a lot of regulars sat there and would routinely chat with who I presumed to be the owners. What stood out to me were the baked dishes and the use of mangos in some of their rolls. I wouldn't skip out on the baked dishes, they are different than your typical and very hearty. I like the use of mangos in rolls and thought it complimented the dishes well.

Been here a couple of times already and the service never failed. Even came here during the Cherry Blossom Festival and the staff were still friendly / accommodating. They even put a spicy sauce on the side of one of the katsu plates when we mentioned that my dad couldn't handle all that haha. This cozy spot mainly focuses on katsu plates, but I like how they had off menu or specials to choose from if you'd like another option. I will say though them katsu plates were just chef's kiss. The meat is pounded thin enough where it's still juicy and tender, but doesn't affect the exterior from being crunchy and a bit flaky. Nothing was dry here yallll! I also like how it already comes with miso soup and salad. Huge fan of that Hamachi Truffle special though. Think of a citrusy flavor from the ponzu, fresh fish, a bit of micro greens, and a thin slice of jalapeño that just ~works~ on a cute wooden spoon that you want to steal I could honestly eat like 5 spoons of this. I'd skip on the calamari as it was kind of skimpy to share with a large group. Only note was that their fried katsu curry was a bit underwhelming with having more slices of carrots than potato! Would love to come back if I am ever in the area.

Wait time: Not an extremely long wait between ordering and receiving food and drink. A buzzer is given to you which rings when your food is completed. Food: The yuzu salmon onigiri had a decent serving of salmon inside and on top of the rice. Good salmon flavor but slightly lacking in yuzu flavor. Chicken Curry onigiri: a mild curry flavor which again had a decent rice to chicken ratio. The chicken did taste slightly dry despite the curry sauce likely due to the nature of being a ground meat. Matcha Latte c Pistachio Cream was easily one of the best tasting matcha drinks I have had in SF. The matcha had a strong flavor and the pistachio cream did not overpower the taste of the matcha. There was a nice sweet, slightly salty, and pistachio flavor from the cream and the addition of the crushed pistachios was not a weird texture for the drink. I would definitely be interested in trying more of their matcha beverages due to quality and size of drink compared to cost.

We walked into a refined but welcoming space where the sushi counter is the main focus, and the meal unfolds course by course in front of us. There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. What makes Kusakabe memorable is the craftsmanship and pacing of the meal. The chefs take time to explain each course, making the experience feel personal rather than rushed. Sitting at the counter adds to the atmosphere because you get to see the precision and care that goes into every piece, from the way the rice is formed to the final brush of sauce on the fish.
