Short walk and here we are. Back in the day before people were lazy and actually went out to eat I would sometimes judge a restaurant by the number of people there at any time. Back then no patrons equaled witness protection place or Russian front. With Door Dash, Uber Eats and any number of delivery and take out services that may not be the case anymore. Walking in tonight we were a little concerned since Polk Street was packed and only one other couple at a table here. We stayed. So in this day of delivery this place may not have a lot of people in the seats but the number of take out orders is constant. If the people doing take out, Door Dash, etc were actually here there would be a line out the door. Over the evening other people came and ate inside. Our second time at Wasabi & Ginger. We were hanging around SF, and felt like sushi. A quick search yielded Wasabi & Ginger, and upon entering the place we realized we had been there before. There were a couple of other groups at tables, but most of this business' traffic seems to be in take-out orders. It was non-stop with pickup people coming in for orders. My partner says you used to be able to measure the success of a restaurant by the number of tables it fills, but now it's by the number of take-out orders it gets, and in this place that definitely appears to be the case. Service was good, the lady who appears to be the manager/owner checked in on us regularly. We kept it light with salmon sashimi, veggie gyozas, and miso soup, and we tried their Ozeki premium sake, which was yummy. Good sake selection for sure. We took our time and were not rushed at any point - this always goes a long way with me. Great music too! Upbeat modern dance music, no downer pop! In fact throughout our Valentine's weekend in SF, we did not encounter a single place playing downer music! What a pleasant surprise. Is downer pop in eateries just an East Bay thing? I wonder. A hidden gem! One of my favorite sushi roll places in SF! Service is always welcoming, warm, and friendly. The interior is clean and modern. They play Warriors games! I like running and walking here--it's also pretty bikeable and accessible via Van Ness buses. Occasionally, we do Doordash, and it still tastes good after delivery! I like the Double Hamachi Roll, Pink Dragon Roll, Lion King roll, SF roll, and Romeo and Juliet! They use good quality fish and it's filling. While I can't speak to the service/dine in experience, I have ordered takeout from Wasabi & Ginger and have had a great experience. Their main dishes I.e. chicken katsu, chicken teriyaki etc. are solid portions and the basic rolls are reasonable as well. Everything comes thoughtfully packaged and is always promptly ready when we arrive to pickup. Prices are to be expected for SF. We enjoy this neighborhood spot when we need dinner in a pinch and don't want to go far. read more

I've never been to the restaurant, but I order takeout from them constantly. I like like their sushi, it arrives at my door fresh. But lately, I've notice that they no longer put a paper separator (the one that looks like grass) on tray to separate the wasabi and ginger condiments from mixing with the rolls. So when the rolls arrive, they're covered in wasabi and ginger (more than I would like). Also it looks like they just raised their prices by $2 per roll. That's an over 10% hike which is a lot. Times are tough so on the one hand I get it, but on the other hand I just wish they raised prices a little bit more gradually. And also, bring back the paper separator! read more

First time at this Japanese restaurant, and there's nothing really too special about this place. Typical Japanese restaurant with a basic menu. Parking is really hard, and their sushi tasted very "fishy". The service is really good, but it wasn't really busy when I went so I wouldn't know how their service would be on a busy time. I was in the bay area and saw this place while walking by. It was a Sunday night so they we're pretty slow. They have a great menu and so twist on rolls that I haven't seen before. I had a go to spider roll, this is perfect roll for those who have never had sushi and one of my favorites for years, it is deep fried soft shell crab, avocado and tobiko (black caviar) you can ask for no tobiko but it doesn't really take over the taste. Next I went for something I never had before the double Hamachi roll, this is yellow tail rolled and on top with jalapeños spicy cream and wasabi seasoning, it was smoothe and delicious, but spicy so if you like the spicy go for it. I also had beer and hit saki a great meal over all. They give you edamame as appetizer with your meal. Good job Wasabi & ginger, I hope to return again. I recommend this restaurant highly. read more

This seems like a more popular place for takeout than eating in. I was really excited to try the Romeo & Juliet Roll which is supposed to be really popular here. The sauce was definitely spicy, so I'm glad they offered it on the side for me. To be honest, I was disappointed that it was so small. Definitely not a regular sized roll -- slightly larger than a maki-type roll. However, everything tasted great and very fresh. I don't recommend the salmon maki though. For some reason it tasted hard to me as if the rice was not fully cooked. The caterpillar roll And Hamachi nigiri were excellent. The best surprise was the miso clam soup which we were so excited to try, that I forgot to take a picture of it. Overall, I would give this place a 3.5 if we were able to give half stars, but it gets an extra half star because it was clean and quaint inside. read more

I ordered the X roll and the Volcano roll. Not to be harsh, but I was very disappointed to the point were I was questioning the freshness of the ingredients. The rice seemed old and stale and the fish tasted rubbery and not fresh at all. The taste was generic and reminded me of gas station sushi. When I'm craving sushi during SIP, this is my go-to spot. I've ordered from Caviar, DoorDash, and GrubHub, and have had pleasant experiences each time. The food is always fresh and flavorful, and I really like how neatly packed the food comes too!Never any spillage. The only thing I ever didn't like there was the salmon skin hand roll. It was too deeply fried, hard, and barely could taste any fish. Felt more like a tempura hand roll, so maybe pass on that...other than that though, there's a delicious extensive menu that I highly recommend! Some of the better sushi we've had in the city--which is surprising since there was a big group of obnoxious Marina-kids sitting in the private in-floor dining room at the entrance. Sushi quality was very good--fiancée loved the tako, amberjack, and toro. Decent uni. I really liked the Romeo & Juliet roll which has raw scallops on top, and salmon and avocado on top. Prices are also very reasonable, at $8-$12 per roll, and $4-$8 for 2 pieces of nigiri or sushi. They had space on a Friday night at 8:30pm--I think it's because it's outside of the hearts of Pac Heights and the Marina. Good for us! Was craving sushi last Saturday and decided to place a to-go order here. It did not disappoint at all. I ordered a miso soup, a tempura roll, a double hamachi roll, and tempura portabello mushrooms. The tempura roll and double hamachi roll were fantastic - I especially enjoyed the double hamachi roll out of the two. I'd highly recommend ordering that as a first timer. The tempura portabello mushrooms really blew me away though. It came with about 5 or 6 pieces of yummy fried mushrooms that were accompanied by this super delicious spicy mayo sauce. I'd come back just for that dish and sauce alone. I'll be back to Wasabi & Ginger in the near future! read more

I would definitely recommend bringing your group to Wasabi & Ginger. Ideally, you can get one of the big tables that seat about 10 (or both tables) in the private room in the front of the restaurant. Here, you can sit on the floor and dangle your feet into the pit! The food is very good and there are tons of choices. I love their sushi and other friends also swear by their chicken teriyaki. There are also tons of great sake choices and some of the very good chilled sake is at quite reasonable prices (about $5-$6 for a small bottle). I've been to several parties at Wasabi & Ginger before going out on Polk or elsewhere and ten of us will be back there tonight in all our sake-drinking glory! ;) read more
