The scallops were amazing, the signature rolls were great, the whole experience was tasty. Hard to find if you use GPS, it's tucked in the side of a mall next to a Giant, actually not located on the Wisconsin Ave roadside despite the address. So one random night my boyfriend and I couldn't decide for the life of us where to go and we ended up here. For starters the hostess was friendly and immediately offered to validate our parking. We were seated immediately and the decor/ambiance were above expectations and fantastic. Our server Coco was friendly, quick, kind, and knowledgeable. We started with Crispy Brussel spouts YUM! I had the East west roll (good) and the Ume shisho roll (yuck) I did not enjoy this roll at all, I thought the potato they used was slimy. I told Coco he said that was a common response and brought me an avocado roll promptly. I was happy. Boyfriend had the Sweet and spicy roll, and soft shell crab roll (he loved both). For dessert the BF had the bread pudding (a recommendation of Coco) he was very pleased. Overall it was a wonderful experience from start to finish, and we will go again. read more

My boyfriend and I came here last night for the Kobo experience. It's their new omakase/chef's selection menu cooked and served right in front of you at their newly renovated sushi bar. The food was exceptional ("literally the best meal I've ever had" per foodie boyfriend) with items ranging from wagyu beef with uni & truffles to smoked oysters to your expected singular pieces of sushi. The sushi was so good that we ended up ordering repeats of some of the items the chef made for us. Their rice is marinated in red vinegar and might throw some palettes off but it complements the dishes they create very well. The service we received from both the chefs and Jason (our waiter? Host?) was also phenomenal. There wasn't a time Jason wasn't available to answer questions and requests and they always made sure we were satisfied with every one of the 15-course meal we had. At the end, we also received goodie bags the chefs created for the diners, which had homemade chocolates and homemade yuzu dressing with a thank you card. So cute. No No No. Never again. The food is decent however, the service just ruined the entire meal. Prices are sky high and just not worth it. We had reservations for 8:30 on a Saturday night. First off, the restaurant was almost empty yet we found ourselves waiting all night for food and service. We waited forever to finally get a drink order in. After a long wait, another server comes up to our table and goes "forgot to check ID". Uggg, another long wait to actually get the drinks. They switched servers on us a couple of times throughout the meal and even brought the check to us before we got our desserts. REALLY??? Not only that but sushi chefs cleaned out their station, turned off all the lights and we sat there in near dark thinking to ourselves is this place still open?? We hadn't even gotten dessert yet. Did you know that the Sushi Ko in Glover Park is the oldest sushi restaurant in the DC metro area? I was excited to try the new place in Chevy Chase after reading a description of a more modern-looking space. I came to Sushi Ko with the fam for lunch on Independence Day, and, other than the frustration of finding the place, it was a great experience! Location: You can't see the restaurant from the road because it's in a strip of small shops just off of Wisconsin where Western Ave hits 355. You'll see a huge complex that displays the address "5425" across the way from the Friendship Heights Metro Station. If you're facing this structure (with Clyde's), then turn into the parking area just left of this building and it'll take you right there. I liked the minimalist decor here and the wide open spaces. Definitely a breath of fresh air compared to the Glover Park location. But does the cuisine hold up? We went with the prix-fixe lunch specials. The seaweed salad is definitely the way to go, compared to the Sushi Ko salad which you can get at any other Japanese place. The seaweed salad had three different types of seaweed with a lightly sweet dressing that was subtle and creamy and brought it all together nicely. We all went with the sashimi appetizer instead of the tempura, and we were happy with our choice. The sashimi came out in tiny little portions, just enough for a taste of each fish. Our plates were then whisked away and were replaced by our entrees. I had the roasted salmon - tender, moist and lightly seasoned. Yikes! -- I can't remember what others ordered, but I do remember being the happiest about what I got. :) How self-centered am I?? For dessert, we went with a scoop each of three different ice creams, and one sake sorbet that came out in a gorgeous martini glass. And guess which one won? The sake sorbet was pretty much like sake shaved ice (or sake bingsoo) and was quite strong and fantastic!! It reminded me of the signature dessert at Makoto, except without the fruit flavoring. I made a mental note of the very cool-looking bar, so that if I'm in the area and want to get a post-Maggiano's drink or kill some time before a movie at the AMC, I'll know where to go. I'm also puzzled by the negative reviews because this place seemed pretty Asian to me. Maybe over time they've ironed some things out and have become more consistent with their offerings. They're known for their sushi/sashimi; very fresh. The salmon sashimi was perfect, thick and fresh.. Just the way I like it! They did not have much desserts to choose from, but definitely order the Bread pudding with vanilla ice cream, drizzled with buttercream caramel and green tea cream, it was so good! or if you want something lighter, Coconut ice-cream with mango mousse was also good. I've been here on 2 seperate occassions and the word pa-too-wee comes to mind but I don't know how to spell it. The first time was just as disappointing as the first but I wanted to make sure that my initial experience was not atypical...it wasn't. On both occasions the tuna was a bit too fishy (like not very fresh fishy) and the rolls were uninteresting. Also, the waitor seemed to not want to be there and was rushing us through our meal. Solid 3 stars. It is definitely overpriced, but that should be expected for the area. First and foremost, order the brussels sprouts. The accompanying sauce is TO DIE FOR. I was shocked to be so in love with brussels sprouts, at a sushi restaurant no less, but it is one of the best veggie dishes I've had locally. Unfortunately the rest of the sushi isn't much to rave about. It is tasty, but some of the specialty rolls pack far less value than I'm satisfied with. The Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll and Softshell Crab Roll are my favorites, with the Crunchy Shrimp Roll coming in at a close third. Portions are moderate but some may leave hungry even after two rolls. **3.5 stars** but I'm rounding up. Sushi-Ko in Chevy Chase will forever be remembered in my head as a "first date" with someone whose company I happen to really enjoy. Oh - when I walked in, I totally missed the fact that the host stand is immediately to your left. So if you're not paying attention and are feeling a little space-y, just an FYI - it's to your LEFT. The decor of the restaurant is very modern and clean. I think I remember high ceilings and it was pretty dimly lit. The tables were cute and I really liked the brown leather chairs. The menu had a good selection of items - starters and small dishes, dinner entrees and sushi. For drinks, he got a beer and I opted for the sake-tini, peach flavored. It was tasty. So for dinner, we decided to get a mix of rolls and nigiri. We both tend to play it safe and not be too adventurous so we got spicy salmon, spicy scallop, california, sweet shrimp and tuna. It was just enough to hit the spot. We also ate pretty slowly because we talked a lot - so it was definitely a slow-paced meal. The sushi was really good and we both enjoyed our selections. I was also pleased that I didn't spill soy sauce on my white shirt. Our server didn't come by too much - only to refill water when our cups ran dry but that was fine by me. I think she may have felt a little awkward trying to interrupt our conversation. So anyway, we didn't get dessert so I have no idea what those options were but I'd be up for coming here again to check it out. I struggled between 3 and 4 stars, but I had to go with 4 since the Sushi was great. I have been to the other location, but so long ago I need to go back for passing new judgment on it. My favorite sushi place is Kotobuki (I dont care what you say), and while they may not have the best sushi in DC, its my typical means of comparison. More on that later. The Interior/decor: While it is appears quite modern and fancy, I really didn't care for it. For some reason i like my sushi/Japanese establishments to be more about the culture or at least less about post modern decor. The place is very nice, don't get me wrong, I just don't care for it. The Service: As I waited for my gf to arrive, while at my table, the waiter stopped over 3 times. No joke. I was waiting of course, so he went away each time. Once we ordered and the food arrived, he was never to be seen until the check was brought over. Nothing wrong with the service, just not fantastic. The Food: We ordered the Age Tofu which was spectacular, as good as the OLD Sushi Taro. Also I ordered the Ebi-Su which was very fresh and quite good. Also a half order of veggie tempura which was quite delicious, light and very crispy. As for Sushi, this was the spread: Spicy Scallop roll, Crispy Shrimp Roll, California Roll (I never order this, but I was feeling brave), blue crab and cilantro roll and a asparagus and red pepper roll. The sushi was great. This is what put the review to four stars. It wasn't cheap, but not overly pricey, and I was stuffed after this Japanese feast. The price for this meal, with no drinks was about $45. Not too terrible. This place, as far as the Sushi was concerned, overtook Kotobuki as the best sushi or my favorite in the city. I will still frequent Kotubuki more for the better value overall. I will be back, but I think I will check out the other location. read more

This has been on my list of places to try. It's restaurant week, so why not. The sashimi for the first course was cut beautifully and very fresh. The hamachi was spectacular. Seared scallops for the second course was so yummy I wished there was more. I had the chefs choice nigiri and blue crab roll. What made this course amazing was the rice. It was prepared perfectly that you could feel each individual kernel and the fluffiness provided a lightness you rarely see with sushi. My dining partner opted for the miso marinated salmon. It was enjoyed so much that contemplation about licking the plate clean occurred. It didn't happen but close. House made green tea ice cream was by far the best I've had. You can really taste the matcha and nothing extra like random sugars to suit anyone particular palate. We added the chicken gyoza as an extra dish to share. It was superb. The shiso gave it a light and fresh finish that paired well with the ponzu. I'm going to try shiso in my dumplings recipe now. I'm so inspired by the shiso now. We also order the sake flight which paired well with each course. Our server Kristin H made this recommendation. She was spot on regarding the pairings. She was well versed in her knowledge of the menu and the dishes nuances. We requested the names of the sales and she was so kind to write down not only the names but the undertones of each and the order in which it was presented. Her foodie side was so pleasant and apparent. Her face lite up when speaking of the salmon dish. It's always nice to have a foodie as a server. The only thing I wasn't fond of was the sunken dining room section that we were seated in. It had high ceilings and the sound caused it be an environment not suitable for conversation. I felt I had to speak a bit louder and read my dining partners lips in order to fully hear. It also didn't help that they place a family of four next to us. This family of four had two teenagers. The debacle over how the teenage son should sit was well heard. Overall I'm very pleased. Next to try is the chefs tasting menu at Kobu, their restaurant within a restaurant. Can't wait. read more

**2.5 STARS** We came here last night in a group of 4. I liked the decor, but after my dining experience, I realized that it was just a high-end sushi place. We ordered the toro nigiri, Sushi-Ko sushi and sashimi platter, (with spicy scallop roll) ribeye tartar, dragon roll, seaweed salad, and yellowtail hamachi. We also ordered a bottle of sake, the girls each had a glass of plum wine, and my boyfriend's brother had an Orion beer. I gave it a low rating because of the service, but overall, the food was not worth the price and didn't "wow" me. When we ordered the sake, our server mentioned that they were all cold, but they could also be heated up to be hot. We asked for hot sake, and when he gave it to us, he started pouring them into our glasses, and it was cold. We didn't mind too much, but that was only the beginning. The manager stopped by and we asked if they had plum wine because it wasn't listed on the menu, and she brought us a sample, which was very nice of her. We ordered one glass each. The ribeye tartar was amazing, and I enjoyed the yellowtail hamachi very much. Our server forgot our seaweed salad and the toro roll that my girlfriend ordered, so we replaced that with a dragon roll. The seaweed salad was very dense, and wasn't like a regular seaweed salad. He picked up two plates that still had food on them, and took our "chopstick holders" (the things you make with the paper the chopsticks come in) and threw them away. He was a nice guy, but something seemed off about him that night. I may come back here if I were in the area, because it's by an awesome shopping district. It is amazing how little things can brighten up my day. Celebrating a coworker's birthday, we decided to head over to sushi ko for dinner and drinks after our other drinks. Getting here with 10 people in the middle of their happy hour seemed like a problem since we ended up standing in the front for 5 minutes not knowing what the hell is going on, thankfully b-day boy had some host/waitress connections and got us a table in the back where they very kindly served us happy hour drink prices! The lounge lemonade is delicious, a little too sweet especially at the end, but the fact that I was drinking it for $5 rather than $10 made it taste just that much better. Decor is nice, the bar area is simple and understated in their decorations and the back has murals of what could be understood (with the appropriate amount of alcohol in you) as a sushi eating orgy. Rolls are alright, small but enough to fill you up, but my problem is how bland they tasted. They were a couple steps up from supermarket sushi when you get to it just made fresh. Not the most creative options available and especially limited on spicy rolls. Hell their wasabi didn't even taste as hot. Spicy tuna and sashimi was fine. I really enjoyed the presentation of the sashimi tuna as a rose on the rolls, but pretty food to look at doesn't satisfy my sushi love. The unagi was lackluster as well. All in all I wasn't impressed, especially after hearing just lovely things about this place. The food just like the decor was simple and minimalistic i.e. simple dishes with minimal taste. I would suggest this place for beginners to sushi as they don't get a nice introduction into sushi, but for the intermediate experienced sushi eaters maybe try somewhere else. read more

The service here is the worst. Our server ignored us completely after we ordered. we didn't get the water for the whole time(we asked for water 4 times, she would say yes and not come back). We were going to order more food but we could not, because every time she passed by us, she avoided to look at us, or pretended that she didn't hear anything from us. Finally we ordered something. Before we got the second courses of food, our plates and chopsticks were taken away by a guy. Then we had to ask the server several times to get new plates and chopsticks so we would be able to eat. So they are close to my office and I love sushi - this was fair at best! The best thing here was the cocktails and the service at the bar. We have enjoyed ourselves at the bar way more than we have ever sitting at a table. I recommend the ginger vodka! I made a reservation a month in advance at 7 PM for Valentine's Day weekend. I don't get to go out to nice restaurants that often. I was especially excited to get the vegetable tasting menu that got featured in the Washington Post. My partner is vegan and options are pretty limited. I wanted to wow him. Somehow the reservation I made a month in advance isn't the right kind of reservation. The person who came over to talk to us spent 10+ minutes explaining why I was wrong, didn't offer to help. Everything on the platter was so good we completely ignored each other and ate in silence; I think people around us thought we were in a fight. How would you like to be the envy of all your sushi-soliciting friends and say that you have eaten in a BRAND NEW restaurant? Well, hurry up, because here's your chance! The Chevy Chase branch of Sushi-Ko just opened last Friday! I had the spicy tuna roll and the crunchy eel roll, both in the maki form (by which I mean seaweed, not rice, on the outside). The spicy tuna was the melted/pureed kind as opposed to the whole-fish approach. When you puree tuna it's got to have a compelling kick. This spicy tuna roll had a kind of weak kick which came at the very end, so it was somewhat disappointing. On the plus side it did have some fresh scallions in it. The crunchy eel was the better of the two, definitely fresh and with a good sauce. It was good that they did not drench the eel roll in sauce like some other places do. I felt that the portions for both rolls were very small, however. The service was very friendly and super-fast. This might be partially because the restaurant just opened three days ago, so the staff was probably eager to please. This place has a lot of potential. It is right next to the Friendship Heights Metro station on the Red line, accessible by many buses, and convenient for anyone who might be shopping at the nearby malls on a weekend. DC sushi loyalists will know that this is a much-anticipated new branch of a restaurant by the same name that already exists in DC in the Glover Park neighborhood. The owner is the same and I was told the menu is similar also. The Chevy Chase branch seats about 150 compared to Glover Park's 80. It has plenty of space for large parties, including semi-private rooms. It also has a pretty cool-looking bar, if you're into that. There are some sushi places in nearby Bethesda, but it's really not that nearby. The other neighborhood competition Sushi-Ko Chevy Chase might have is Yosaku, which is on Wisconsin closer to the Tenleytown stop. Yosaku is smaller and has a friendlier feel, but the decor really needs some work. This new Sushi-Ko has very nice decor, even to the point of intimidation. All fish r fresh. Seaweed salad has lettuce in it. A bit weird. I like the ambience. What an atmosphere for long chats. I went there for long chats with my family. Really works here. Do you ever leave a sushi bar thinking, "Gee, that was nice, but couldn't they have made it a little more AMERICAN?" If so, you'll love Sushi-Ko. My initial impression was exactly that: American. The interior looks carefully and expensively designed; it is striking and yuppie. The setup is very datey, being extremely dim and well-spaced. The playlist is designed for the Young and Hip, ranging from techno to French oldies. It was clear that considerable thought had gone into the atmosphere, so I hoped for similarly meticulous cooking. I was with reviewer Cyrus N. when I went, and I must say I agree with him nearly 100%. Their basic seaweed salad's variety in seaweed (plus its space-filler lettuce, ha) was cool, but the fact remains that it was covered in a very sweet, creamy sauce that reminded me of the time I mixed mayonnaise and ketchup. The salmon ceviche dish failed to live up to its name or price. It tasted pretty good, but ultimately failed because the mango marinade was undetectable, and the price was far too high for 5 pieces of fish the size of mini Band-Aids. The crunchy eel maki was very tasty, but meager. Sushi-Ko was so depressing, I went next door to Giant to satisfy my sushi craving. Giant's sushi is not high-quality, but at least you get what you pay for. Overall: Thoroughly American, rather overpriced. read more

My favorite sushi place in the city. Yes, above even Sushi Taro and Kotobuki. After their most recent renovation Sushi Taro lost their quaint and accessible atmosphere. As a grad student with a passion for sushi, Sushi Taro simply can't be justified. Sushi Ko is also on the Red Line and a shorter walk from the metro than Sushi Taro. Kotobuki isn't metro accessible at all. Sushi Taro and Kotobuki are legitimate Japanese run establishments while I question Sushi Ko's authenticity. I'm usually a sushi snob, but Sushi Ko's selection is both impressive and fresh. I always get an order of Uni and the Smoked Salmon Salad with ample Ikura. Yum. Haven't found the Smoked Salmon Salad anywhere else. The Uni is the best I've ever had, tastes like butter! This is quite an achievement in my opinion considering that I've dined in both Japan and Hawaii. I like sitting at the sushi bar because the sushi chefs are quite nice and entertaining. For example, after making a slight complaint about the host who told us it'd be a 30 minute wait for a both we wanted, though shortly after we were seated at the sushi bar, proceeded to seat another couple in a booth and also didn't offer to take our coats while offering the service to others around us, the sushi chef offered us Panna Cotta on the house as well as let us sample some yellow tail I inquired about. Cocktails here are unique and yummy. Though the layered ones require some stirring to enhance the taste. The best server is Francis, he's a darling. read more

I'm rating Sushi-Ko's excellent happy hour, as I haven't had a chance to experience dinner here, but plan to very soon. I hit their happy hour with my best work buddy all the time. They keep it simple and delicious with a $5 food and drink menu, from which my favorites are the spicy crunchy tuna roll, veggie tempura, and Lycee martini. I can get two satisfying small plates, three drinks, spend under thirty bucks, and then hop, skip, and jump over to the Friendship Heights metro for a nice, gently-buzzed ride home. (We all know how much it helps one's patience to toss a few back before getting on the red line...). My only beef is that there's occasionally a family hanging out in the "comfy pit" area of the lounge - yup, even at happy hour; this is Chevy Chase after all - and when you're out having a few cocktails with the girls, it's only decent to try and keep the convos about your "sexcapades" to a modest level. But the families usually don't hang out for long, and the sunken-ness of the pit actually serves to keep them at a respectable distance, anyway. This is a very cute place with some definite highlights. The warm spinach salad with mushrooms is phenomenal. I also loved the seared lobster and scallops. It seems you can't go wrong with the small plates, but to my disappointment the sushi left much to be desired. Generally, I love dragon rolls. Typically, you cant go wrong ordering these anywhere...i guess with the exception of this place. The soft-shell crab was also mediocre at best. I'm by no means a sushi snob, but unfortunatley in my opinion, this place is better for their small plates vs their sushi. Also the drinks are not that great. Overall, nice place, friendly service, and decent atmosphere (althought if they turned up the music just a notch, it would be perfect). Worth checking out. read more

I've been meaning to check out Sushi-Ko for quite some time. DC doesn't have many good sushi restaurants and as a California native, I miss it! Pros: -I got some very fresh tuna tartar. They plated the dish beautifully and it is served with what looks like potato chips but are actually rice chips. The tuna is served with mango relish and scallions. -nice decor -service was attentive and quick but not at all rushed. Cons: -thank god I wasn't too hungry because the tiny tuna tartar was 14 bucks. A dinner here could easily become very costly. -The outside dining area needs some work. It's facing a parking lot and the wicker chairs left ugly impressions on my legs. Embarrassing. read more

I am not understanding the lackluster reviews. I went today for lunch soon after they opened and everything was excellent and on par.I thought the lunch special was a bit expensive, but it was tasty and filling. I even took my last course, the sushi, home with me and ate it later for dinner along with my left over edamame (which came complimentary). I ordered the lunch special with miso soup, shrimp tempura, and Salmon Avocado roll with what ever sashimi comes with it. Portions were good and tempura was perfection. Light, crispy, not oily or soggy. Sushi tasted as fresh as it could be considering it was a Sunday. Miso was flavorful. Service was attentive. Restaurant was clean. I don't know what more I could have wanted. I know the place fills up in the evening and I probably would have had a different experience but for what I got today I am pleased. By the way, these people get presentation. Everything was presented beautifully! Good job, Sushi-Ko! read more

This is our go-to sushi place in the area. Their sushi is extremely fresh and there is a wide variety of nigiri and rolls. Their specialty rolls are also out of this world: ultimate roll, east-west roll and element roll are all worth trying. Servers and bartenders are always friendly and they remember regulars. They serve up a great happy hour and have outdoor seating. read more

This place is a mediocrity. I ordered the tuna avocado roll and the salmon avocado roll and was not impressed. This rice was hard and undercooked, and the fish did not taste fresh. The prices for lunch are also rather expensive, each roll was $5 which shocked me, most sushi places have specials such as two rolls for $6 during lunch. Also, I ordered a side of spicy mayo, which I always do. Then, I look at the check and they has charged me 50 cents for it. The waiter has never mentioned the extra charge, and I have never before been charged for a condiment at a restaurant. To me, charging for spicy mayo is the equivalent of charging for ketchup. Its simply tacky. All in all, this place is an overpriced mediocrity. I recommend spending your money elsewhere. read more

This place has a nice atmosphere- very clean, modern, and chic. we ordered a couple of sushi, oyster miso soup, steak, and banana tempura. my favorite sushi out of all the ones we picked out was definitely the Soft Shell Crab then the Dragon roll...the flavor is amazing on the soft shell crab!! oyster miso soup wasn't all that, it tasted really weird actually... but let me tell you about the STEAK!!! i am so excited because it was a steak ive never had. It's a small portion of steak and mushrooms but the steak medium rare just melts in your mouth and the flavor is unbelievable! as for dessert, my friend recommended banana tempura with coconut icecream, it was delishh! will definitely come back to try the pan seared lobster and scallop. and more soft shell crab and steak! overall, this place IS YUMMY!!! read more
