A gorgeous, upscale Japanese restaurant with tasting (chef) menu and understated elegance. Service can be hit or miss, and toilet is definitely up to par with the rest of the restaurant (too cramped, dirty and lack of upscale feeling). A number of dishes are worth the price. See my pictures. The grilled yellowtail cheeks are beautifully presented and masterfully executed. Grilled with salt only. Simple. Garnished with lemon. You get to enjoy the freshness of it. It's quite substantial too even though it's advertised as a small dish. To use soy sauce at a place like this would be sacrilege. We mostly stuck to tasting the fresh taste of the food presented without adding any thing. The grilled baby octopus and tender and delicious. The sweet flavor of the pickled daikon balanced off the salty flavor of the octopus. Amazing dish. The mussel miso soup is excellent. Love the broth. Do try their freshly ground wasabi! Such beautiful pieces of fish treated so poorly :(. And the roll I ordered was hacked up in pieces that were nowhere near uniform. I have been here several times, and to be honest, I've always had a great experience. It should be 4.5 stars, but since the food has consistently been good for each visit, I can almost say it's a 5 star (I kept toggling back and forth between 4 and 5). First off, I never realized how amazing the happy hour is here! I've been once, but I guess I forgot how great the prices were, but I remember the food being amazing. My friend and I went here for restaurant week (my most recent visit), and the fish was super fresh and great. Off the restaurant week menu, we ordered the miso soup, the sashimi, and I ordered the nigiri option while my friend ordered salmon that was cooked as raw as possible (which they got right)! The miso soup was honestly too salty...and I kept chewing into crab shell in the soup X:. But it was still enjoyable! In terms of the sashimi/nigiri, sushiko did amazing by the salmon. I almost ordered more. The yellowfish was also great, but the tuna was lacking a bit...I was surprised at how thin the cuts were and chewy it was. The salmon avocado roll was awesome, which happens to be my favorite go-to roll. My friend loved the miso salmon option, she kept raving about it throughout the meal and even when we went to the bathroom! The sweet potato puree was a great touch as well. Last, the green tea ice cream was truly the perfect dessert. I don't like ice cream, but the taste got me going--and I finished a whole ice cream, which I rarely do! I want to give kudos for a waiter tonight, although we had to flag him down the first time, he was super attentive of our table afterwards despite us being a bit away from the main part of the restaurant, and split our ordered lychee drink into 2 glasses for us because we both just wanted to try just 1 (and I honestly drank too much this whole week). Back again recently on a very busy Saturday night. We didn't have a reservation but we were able to sit at the last open table for 4. The service was not as rapid as the first visit, but it was instead very well paced throughout the entire meal. The four of us tried a variety of appetizers and fish - all were fantastic. I came here after a heavy bout of tennis and I really was craving sushi. This really hit the spot. I got the spicy tuna roll. It was quite good!. I do wish that the portion size was a bit bigger given the price however I was happy with the quality. There is no parking lot and it is easy to find parking in the neighborhood and walk. What a great experience all around! Went here for the first time and we were blown away with the quality of the options and food. We have the tenderloin that is cooked on a very hot rock, the sauce was so good and meat excellent. Sashimi was very fresh and the rolls were some Of the best we have ever had. We will be back. One thing you will get with my reviews is a straight forward honest review. I So sick of reading about these rude customers of establishments who are probably a pain to deal with complain about the smallest things. Sushi-Ko is across the street from our office so I usually stop by every time I'm in town. I'd say the sushi is better than the run of the mill places. It definitely strives to be on the high-end side, with interesting menu, upscale/trendy decor, and the prices to go along. On my most recent visit, I had my heart set on a OMG roll which is something I've been curious about for awhile. But . . it was not to be. Instead, I settled on a Sushi-Ko chirashi bowl, which I found immensely satisfying. It was served in a bento box and came w/ maguro, salmon, snapper, ebi, tamago. The rice was topped with salmon and smelt roe and served with picked radishes and inari sushi skin - nothing exotic but all very fresh and nicely presented. I've been on a chirashi bowl kick of late and this was one of the better ones. For starter, I had the agedashi tofu which was served in a ponzu like broth with these tiny little mushroom caps and daikon. The flavor was delicate and refreshing. I also tried the oyster miso soup. Again, the flavor was a little delicate but this time a little bland. For dessert, the bread pudding made with croissant and topped with a green tea mousse, paired with a scoop of ice cream, vanilla I believe. Perhaps a little more on the bread and too little on the custard than my taste but good nonetheless. A friend thought that "ko" means small and perhaps that's why the portions are smaller. You wouldn't come here for value but the high quality fish and the ambiance makes Sushi-ko a nice choice. read more

My party had a real good time here and this the four star ratings. I did go a little overboard, so the price was a bit high, by getting the toro tuna appetizer ($39.50) and waygu beef on hot rocks appetizer ($16?). Felt luxurious, these two food items. Yum. If I could afford it, I would order just these two dishes and be happy man. The sushi/sashimi didn't disappoint, but for the rolls, I think imo, put too much rice. Save room for their desserts too. I also had the hamachi crude which included sashimi hamachi, grapefruit slices, jalapeño, and an amazing sauce that I wish I could have drank. Although the portion was small, it was amazing. Went here for happy hour and their happy hour specials are great. $5 sake and cocktails and also $4-6 apps and hand rolls which were unique and tasty. In town for a few days, I was craving some sushi and found Sushiko. I was seated at the bar without a reservation and the $65 five-course omakase caught my eyes. I went for it and did not disappoint. Started off with a crab meat on seaweed and cumber as appetizer, then came the sashimi of salmon, toro and kanpachi. My favorite was the duck breast on porridge with sakura. I almost licked the plate lol The porridge has a smokey flavorful from the duck and it was heavenly. Then came the nigiri of California uni, seared toro, otoro and kanpachi. Lastly it's a homemade cherry blossom and honey ice, which was honestly a bit disappointing as I didn't taste any cherry blossom and it became very sweet very quickly. Sushiko is a large, fancy Japanese restaurant that caters to those with money to spend, but the food is worth it if you are one of them. My boyfriend took me to Sushiko on a Saturday night (with reservations) and the experience overall was very pleasant. While I was initially a bit intimidated by the prices, as this was a nice sushi restaurant, we ended up deciding on the chirashi and 2 rolls to share. This ended up being a great choice because the chirashi allowed us to try various slices of sashimi, which were incredibly fresh and delicious. One of the rolls we ordered was a vegetarian one, which I was surprised to enjoy quite a bit. This is actually good. My favorite sushi from there by far. Spicy Scallop ($6) - Scallop, Fish Roe, Scallion & Spicy Sauce. This one's pretty good too, you can't go wrong with scallop. Eel Roll ($15) - It's not that good. In my opinion, the ginger isn't necessary. I think it's way overpriced and not worth the price. Grilled Baby Octopus ($9) - The Mango sauce's pretty good, however the octopus is too fishy of a smell. The smell kindda overpowers the flavor in a way. Came out to celebrate my birthday. My partner took me for a surprise dinner. Sadly they don't have any birthday specials like a free dessert or anything, but still great for birthday celebrations. I originally thought this place closed down, but randomly found it recently. We're glad we did. We enjoyed the service and the food. Do expect it to he busy even on a weekday. I recommend getting their hot tea to go with the raw fish. We ordered a little too much. The total was a little over 200. For two omakase dishes, 3 rolls, 3 appetizers, and 1 big entree. Love love loved our time at Sushiko. We arrived after a movie on a busy Friday night with no reservations. Despite that, the hostess really sweetly got us a table after maybe a ten minute wait and loads of people with reservations getting seated just before us. Food: We both got the Wild Mushroom Suimono to start, which was delightful. It comes in a light dashi broth and has some yummy wild mushrooms floating around. No strong flavors and less salty than miso in my opinion. Perfectly small portion to wet your appetite before sushi. We tried different rolls. The first was the Element roll, which is topped with gelatin-like pink tuna cubes (UHHHMAZING) and has avocado, shiso, potato crisp, and red onions on the inside. The wasabi tartare sauce is on the side and you can dip you sushi into it. We both don't handle spicy well, and liked the creamy sauce. Everything about this roll was perfection! Definitely want it again next time! I also enjoyed the Toro Taku roll, which had chopped fatty tuna (of amazing quality) and pickled radish and shiso. Loved the crunch of the pickled radish - it added just the right amount of lightness to an otherwise creamier fish. I'd say I'm ok having tried this, but trying something new next time. I also really wanted to try some nigiri and loved the variety of fish from all over the world. The cherry smoked Arctic char from Iceland was terrific!! And I also loved the Spanish Mackerel. I came here during restaurant week and ordered from their tasting menu which consisted of a 4-course meal. It was $35. First course: (otsukuri) Came with 6 slices of sashimi of chef's preference. Mine were two slices of salmon, two slices of tuna, and two slices of flounder. The freshness of the fish was average, yet the slices were small. Worth it? Probably not. Second course: (hotate miduri) This dish consisted of two scallops served with ikura (salmon roe), cucumber, and cilantro dashing purée. I must say that this was one of the best scallops I've ever eaten-- crispy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside. Too bad this dish only had 2 scallops :( Third course: (sushi mori) This was nigiri sushi with the chef's selection of the day, served with a blue crab California roll. Upon eating the nigiri, I noticed the most common flaw in most sushi: the overwhelming fish to rice ratio. Sadly, this observation ultimately worsened the experience, despite the fish being relatively fresh. Fourth course: (mizumono) Simply green tea ice cream, although slightly higher class. Wasn't too sweet and creamy. Although the quality of this restaurant's ambience and food was on the higher end, its price to quality was still poor. My fiancé booked us the weekday vegan tasting at Kobo by Sushiko; you need to book in advance, they only do two seatings a night, it's pricey but ohhhhh is it worth it. This meal is decadent AF including a science grade tea, vegan caviar (omgggg) a salad that looks like an ice cream cone, the tiniest baby carrots I ever did see, fun flavors, and a water cake with a cherry blossom in it. Let the photos speak for themselves; this meal was the best I've ever had! Not only was the meal wonderful, the service was exceptional. We left with a scrolled copy of our menu, fresh yuzu dressing, and other gifts. Both prior times we were with friends, and business associates and food was fantastic, so good that we wanted to enjoy a meal just my husband and I to be present to the specialness of Sushiko. It is a 'special occasion' dining experience - not a weekly go to sushi restaurant, which there are a dime a dozen out there. My husband and I returned for Valentine's Day and pre-ordered the tasting menu when we made our reservations. Every item in the menu sequence was PERFECTION, beginning with the starter cocktail to the desert. It was a special 2 hours, which was largely timed by Sushiko, and the wise professionalism of their service. They aren't focused on turning tables. We don't eat out often, as we both feel it's hard to top the loving energy that goes into a home cooked meal. It's hard to find truly good restaurants. Not sure if I really needed Atlantic char plus two big sections of salmon... I didn't think I was ordering a salmon bowl. Yums! - Shrimp Tempura: five pieces of Prawn tempura. - Chicken Gyoza: my friend had this one and I really like the sauce you dip the gyoza in. - Jo Sushi: Nine pieces of the chef's finest Nigiri selection of the day. I can't remember what fishes were besides the Salmon, Tuna and Unagi (grilled with teriyaki sauce) but all of them were very delicious. Three and a quarter stars to pay DC prices for conservative portions of good quality sushi off a somewhat limited menu in date-appropriate ambiance. Service is consistently polite, as to be expected for this neighborhood. The main reason we come back is convenient proximity, and I'm guessing that's true for most of their business since they're tucked back by the Giant. I was surprised to see only three options under kitchen entrees, with the core of the non-sushi menu structured as reasonably tasty apps. Hot sake typically suits us just fine. The Donkey Kong cocktail offers a conservative amount of whiskey with a heavy dose of ginger beer and citrus, a touch of bitters, and poured over enough ice and shiso leaf garnish to cut the moderate sweetness. In terms of portion value, tempura udon soup is the best-- chewy noodles, napa cabbage, shiitake, choy, and asparagus sliced on bias in an umami broth garnished with two prawn tempura and fish cake in a medium bowl. Chirashi is an okay value, with lightly seasoned rice dotted with sesame seeds; the lack of pickles despite the description made me sad. Duck confit was a touch overcooked, but the salmon ceviche had a great yuzu dressing despite the unwieldy mounting of roe. I preferred the simpler unagi roll to the Element roll, even if the latter incorporates potato crisps with mild tartar sauce on the side in a fat kid culmination... avocado less upstaged than the tuna, and the soy paper wrapper made for a neutral vessel.
