It breaks my heart to give sushi mono a bad review, because I've been coming here for over 10 years! I'm not sure if they changed owners or got all new staff but this place has completely gone down hill. Since Covid the inside of sushi mono is not a great place to dine. It's just ugly inside, like they completely stopped trying. The tables wobble, no sushi bar, and just looks dirty. Now for the food review. I used to over look the ambience because the food was so good. Welp, that's not the case either anymore. Everything just taste off. I don't know if they got new owners or an all new staff but this place just taste completely different than it used to. It's just got good anymore. I won't go as far to say nasty but I will not be returning. Sad I have to find a new sushi spot after coming here for SO many years. read more

I'm a sucker for some good sushi. And considering that I have been residing in the Citrus Heights/Fair Oaks area, finding a quality sushi restaurant has been more difficult than what I expected. However, after frequenting "Sushimono" which is in the heart of the Sunrise Marketplace, I just might end up dining here on a frequent basis. Located in Fair Oaks at the Quail Pointe Shopping Center on the corner of Sunrise Blvd. and Madison Ave., Sushimono has been serving up their authentic Japanese food and sushi offerings ever since 2011. This is a place I have actually heard of years ago but never had the opportunity to dine here. Since this is a very busy area, parking can be a bit challenging, especially when your neighbors are Starbucks, Sport Clips, and Mr. Pickles. I came here with my lovely lady around 6:30pm on a Sunday evening. As expected, it was quite busy here but luckily, we were able to get seated in a quick and timely manner. Keep in mind that this place is tiny and I can only imagine how much longer the wait can be on Friday and Saturday evenings during dinner. The interior itself offers dim lighting but the decor and ambiance gives this a very lively feel. Additionally, they have a large TV as well as a decent sized dedicated bar area. The menus they handed us mimic that of a Monopoly game board complete with all their standard and specialty rolls, nigiri, a-la-carte items, and kids specials. And for those of you that check-in on the Yelp app, you have your choice of getting either a FREE order of Edamame beans OR Gyoza. I chose their Gyoza but also ordered a side of Edamame as my appetizers. I finally settled with their "James Dean Roll" (priced at a very reasonable $8). This roll consisted of deep-fried shrimp tempura, krab, avocado, eel, scallops, masago, and green onions. Our Edamame and Gyoza arrived simultaneously in just under 5 minutes while the sushi is delivered in just a couple minutes after that. Their Gyoza was flavored very well while the dipping sauce was a nice little addition. My James Dean roll was a very sizable portion while all the flavors were put together with great pride. Best of all, it did not have a fishy taste at all. The servers were very attentive while continuously refilling our glasses of water. All in all, "Sushimono" is a restaurant worth checking out. And for people that reside in Fair Oaks, Citrus Heights, Orangevale, and surrounding areas, this is a great little Japanese restaurant that packs big flavor. With the above average service, sizable portions, excellent flavor, and very decent prices, I am giving Sushimono a very respectable 4-stars. read more

Sushimono is a wonderful place to eat. It's a very small location, but the staff is friendly, and the food is good quality at a low cost. I have been coming to Sushimono for years now, as it is one of the best around. The rolls themselves are very affordable when compared to prices at other restaurants. It's between 6$-15$ for their rolls depending on how complicated and big of one you order. My personal favorite is the Winding Dragon and comes in at a 10$ price point. It's "Krab and deep fried shrimp inside; avocado, unagi and seared tuna on top." It's one of the best rolls I've ever had at any restaurant before and I stand by this one. One of the reasons I like this place so much, is it's so cheap, yet the quality of the ingredients is so good. I've tried nearly every roll they offer and I have to say, they all taste great. You won't be disappointed with your roll when you come here. It's a very laid back environment with good food. Sushimono has made it into my top 10 favorite restaurants in Sacramento. It's a 10/10 as far as I'm concerned. As for sushi places, I've been to nearly 50 different businesses. Sushimono and Mikuni's are the two that are tied for first place in my opinion. Mikuni's is much more expensive and has the highest quality I've ever seen. Sushimono is much more affordable and the quality is still amazing. Mikuni's is where I go on a special occasion, while Sushimono is what I'd get after work with some friends or family. Friendly but slow service. They really need to invest $ into updating the place or hiring a good cleaning. The tables and floors are sticky and the bathroom isn't very clean. My date and I ended up here because our initial nearby sushi destination was unexpectedly closed for Halloween. Although initially disappointed to see the other place closed, Sushimono was open and more than happy to oblige us! We ordered the Spicy Edamame, Yellowtail, Spicy Monster and Super Spider rolls. Everything was great - this was my date's first experience with yellowtail and she loved it... she's mentioned it a couple of times since, so it definitely made an impression! Service was friendly and great... I think we were the last ones to leave right around closing time and we never felt rushed or pushed out the door like can happen at some places. I really appreciate that. One thing I noticed that seemed a little odd or maybe even "cheesy" - there were a few chairs in the dining area that appeared to be held together and/or repaired with duct tape. That didn't give me a good impression at all, and besides looking bad (in an otherwise stylish dining area) I'm guessing it might be a safety issue if a large person happened to sit on one of them. Chairs can't be *that* expensive to replace, can they? This place should be too classy for that. read more

I had two of the most basic rolls and don't understand why this took so long or why nobody seemed to be able to give an accurate estimate of time. wasted over an hour and will not be back, there are plenty of better sushi restaurants nearby. read more

A lot of my friends love this place. I have been underwhelmed the few times I have tried it. I really wish I could see the appeal. Today I was having a bad day and decided I wanted sushi for lunch. Yui Marlu wouldn't answer their phone so I decided to try this place again. I ordered three things (my order is below). I was excited and went and picked my food up. For $30, it felt really light. I got home and opened it up (picture included) and the Unagi was incredibly greasy and sloppy looking, as was the "salmon cream puff" I look closely and the puff had jalapeno on it! I'm allergic to it and it was NOT listed on the online menu. Had it been I would have requested that it not be put on. The only thing that didn't look like a sloppy mess was the Island roll. So I called them, I explained what happened and I could hear the lady who answered telling someone, I'm assuming the chef. He seemed defensive. Then she came back on and told him it should have been on it. I said "well then why doesn't you menu reflect that?!" she told me she would get her manager. I waited almost 10 minutes and finally hung up. I have things to do and didn't want to waste my day waiting and I was hungry! Uhg, I will never go back. I picked the jalapenos off but the juices have made my lips a little swollen and I feel sick. AND the Island roll was ok, but the cucumber was cut very thick, I thought it would be thin cut cucumber since there is no rice. It was not what I expected and I wouldn't have gotten it if I had known it would be super thick. There are so many better places. Wow. At first I have to admit I was hesitant with all the mixed reviews this place has here. Lots of 4/5 stars with some 1 star reviews in the mix. Today, I decided to hell with it and took a leap of faith. Do I regret it? Not at all! Seems like maybe it's a hit or miss type of place. My experience was definitely a hit!! I called around the time they opened and it was ready within 25 minutes. Rose my bike to pick it up, and with social distancing they only allow 2 people inside at a time. Signed off and took my food home. I have ZERO complaints in regards to my food. My belly is satisfied. Please bare with me as I rant about packaging and waste: As much as I appreciated the gentleman who took my order, take the time to ask if I need chopsticks or soy sauce I said no to all the above knowing I was going straight home. Regardless of my saying no to utensils and soy, they packed it for me anyway. I really thought they were being considerate, not just to me but to the planet. Why give me soy sauce when I specifically said I'll eating at home and have soy sauce there. Now the soy sauce is going to waste and I just hate that. This is my second time going here and I am quite pleased. I was introduced to sushi in San Francisco in the late 80s. It's a badge of honor my first sushi dinner was made for me by some Japanese girlfriends from work. My point is I know good sushi and I know good Japanese manners. This place is located in a pretty good/ busy location. The sushi that they have here is amazing for a pretty affordable price. I've been a regular customer since 2014. I have never had a bad experience here. The stuff is really friendly. They will serve your in a best way possible. They sin in area is an okay size. They also have the outside patio where you can dine. Their happy hour starts at 7 pm which is your get two rolls and third one is for free There is plenty of parking spot so you don't have to worry about it . They also cell alcohol. Every time I go here I order "crispy chicken" lion king , and California roll. Their lion king is much better than in arigato sushi. If I would have to choose where to go I would pick Sushimono any time. Conclusion is: customer cervice is great, sushi is great, dinning area with outside patio that has portable ac unit is great so I highly recommend this place. Great little Resturant with great tasting food. They have outdoor seating as well as sushi bar sitting and tables. The waiter that we had was very courteous and had a great attitude. They do have a happy hour but it does not start until 7 PM .....that is kind of a bummer especially if you go out to dinner early and you want to partake in a happy hour. The place is very small, parking is in a strip mall and the outdoor seating has limited seating so if you would like to eat outside you may want to get there early and get your name on the list. My sister and I had the Lemon Roll and my other sister had the Yummy roll. We thought all the rolls were pretty good, however they're not very large in size. I would probably order 4 rolls for 3 people if you are a big eater. All in all, I would give this place 4 stars.... wish they would have an earlier Happy Hour and the rolls were just a little bit larger for the price. read more

One small dry shrimp, 2 small egg pieces, the salmon and tuna were ok but, again really disappointing. Also, got the sunrise roll and the mucho caliente. Both were ok. The caliente being the best. Maybe a bad a night? The fish was dry and or kinda tough. It has been awhile since we have eaten here. Will probably try one more time. Maybe new owners or new workers. First time coming to this little spot on Sunrise blvd. It was packed on Friday night and we had to wait about 10 min to be seated. The menu was super cute like a monopoly board. I was really surprised at the low prices on the rolls, so we ordered 5 different rolls between the two of us. I also ordered a pineapple sake which was delicious. All the rolls were very delicious. Loved the "spicy crispy" roll the best, but dang Gina they have a roll with popcorn lobster! What?! It was so good!!! It technically came out separate from the roll but wow it was so good! Had an opportunity to Doordash some grub from this place. Wanted to show some love to local businesses and opted to try this place as their prices were pretty inviting at a $9-$10 average per roll. Food arrived quickly and looked pretty good. My only complaint is that the rolls are TINY. You'll need at least 2 rolls per person in order to be satisfied (8 pieces per roll). Food was yummy, but too small. You're better off ordering the more expensive rolls, $13+ but those are only a tad bigger. We got the Orange Tree Roll, Mango and Wow rolls. Standard strip mall sushi fare that shows up when you need to satisfy the rice, fish, and wasabi cravings. After visiting Sushimono on a couple of occasions. I ordered the Lion King, Mucho Caliente, and the Mt Fuji. My favorite was the mucho caliente with the spicy sauce and fresh jalapenos. Everything We got there at about 730pm just before a dinner time rush when every table that night was filled. The staff was great- helpful with the menu and serving up plenty of smiles. There was no rush to get our check paid despite the packed restaurant, they let us take our time. Great place to come by if you're in the neighborhood! read more

I've been eating at this establishment every week for the past few months. The food is always on point. Priced well, and they have the best spicy edamame I've ever had!! The service, however, could improve. I ALWAYS have to ask for water refill, which for my 9 yr old daughter who is speed eating spicy Edamame is not a good look. The food takes longer than I'd like to arrive, even with only 2 parties present. I acknowledge the short staff postings, and absolutely understand the times we are in. Everyone is doing their very best, but it still impacts the experience. I would suggest, check on your guests a bit more frequently for water, napkin, etc requests.
