Mother's Day wasn't too busy on Sunday afternoon around 4 pm. We were seated immediately. I knew I wanted sushi and the menu indicated that the sushi that was grayed out was 50% off if you dine in and 40% off for take-out. I ended up ordering the following: Alaskan Roll - It had salmon, snow crab mix, avocado, cucumber and ponzu sauce. The roll was nice and refreshing. You can totally taste the snow crab mix in the rolls. It was awesome! Snowball Roll - It was deep fried with jalapeno, snow crab mix and cream cheese. This one was my favorite amongst the 3 rolls that I ordered. It wasn't too greasy and the cream cheese added great flavor to the snow crab mix. Eel roll - This was the least favorite because they were drenched in eel sauce. The eel sauce overpowered the whole roll. Plus, they were super tiny! Mama dukes ended up ordering the bulgogi and papa ordered the teriyaki salmon. The bulgogi was delicious but the salmon was on the dry side. Service was good up until the end when our server went missing. I had to flag another server down for the bill. 3 sushi rolls, 2 meals and green tea cost about $40 and some change. Not bad but the sushi rolls were really cut small. I could've eaten all 3 rolls by myself if I didn't share with my dad. Each eel roll was the size of a quarter. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating but it was not bigger than a silver dollar. Green tea was excellent though so I'll give this place 3.5 stars. read more

As far as the sushi goes I was drastically unimpressed with the actual sushi itself. For $70 this was not even close to what I expected. You could have gotten a roll form the Asian markets in kearny Mesa and been better off. I guess depending on how you look at it the most expensive pieces were the nigiri salmon. The pieces of salmon were huge. So not exactly a complaint just a huge piece of salmon. Could be more proportional all things considered. What really struck me was the salmon skin roll. So, picture seaweed wrapping with cucumbers and crunchy bits on top. That's all. No flavor or salmon skin even present! Then I got the shrimp tempura roll. You could tell the shrimp was cold! Not sure if it's fresh or coming from a fridge but for $70 I'd think the tempura would be fresh fried. It was not! Understandably, we ate the food at the end of the day. And we tried to give it the benefit of the doubt. But I'll be honest the presentation and quality is definitely lacking here. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. RB Sushi or one of my other places will suite just fine for real, fresh, and hand rolled sushi. People eat here just to eat something different not good quality sushi. I'm disappointed at this place. I've lived in the community my entire life and when Sushiya first opened, it was amazing. I decided to go back after several years for takeout (12/07/22 8:55pm). Went to the restroom, it was filthy and two cooks walked in and used the urinal that said "out of order." I walked out of the stall and one cooks (short older Asian looking man) was washing his hands and decided to spit his phlegm in the sink in front of me. It was awful. Sushi may not be Japanese grade, but if you've ever had traditional Japanese sushi.... this is way better and cheaper!!!!! Traditional sushi is very plain and simple, but still good. I've been coming to Sushiya for years. It's actually the first place I had sushi (I think). I wasn't a huge fan of the idea of raw fish at the time but I learned to eat sushi at Sushiya. I like that there are other options too. Like bentos, soups, not just sushi. I love spicy tuna. That's what I usually get when I go there. The Hawaiian roll is super good because it's basically a California roll with spicy tuna on top. NOMS! The bulgogi is also really good. I usually get that if I'm feeling "Korean" but don't want to deal with Korean BBQ. My boyfriend likes to get the Spanish roll, El Fuego roll, and Crunchy roll. Those are his usuals. The ocean roll is also really good. It's served hot and the sauce or whatever it's in is GOOOOOD. Spicy garlic edamame is good too. My mom likes to get the salmon kama (salmon cheek) with a side of rice. Okay, enough about food. The service used to be BAD. It was super annoying going to Sushiya when I knew the service was bad but the food was good. I learned to deal with it. I think it's gotten better though. Just depends who's working I guess. Service: What an improvement! I noticed an increase in the number of servers, and they are so much more attentive. My friend who works there confirmed my observation and said they have a new manager. Our server was timely and kind. On our previous visits, it was common to have to wave down the servers. Food: I recommend the Philadelphia roll, Ocean Roll and Snowball. I have eaten here several times, first time to write a review. The half off sushi rolls are the only way to go - otherwise, it's just too expensive. For example, a salmon sashimi which has 7 pieces of salmon is $14. I can see maybe charging $10, but not more than that. Our server, Shin, was great. The ocean roll used to be spicier so that was a little disappointing but at $4.50 I can't really complain. The spider roll had a nice amount of soft shell crab. Also like the eel rolls. Our first time visiting this chain of sushi restaurants. We sat at the sushi bar where the Japanese chef with a sense of humor kept us entertained. The restaurant was busy on a Sunday lunch time with families and couples -- a few too many kids for my liking. Staff were friendly and attentive. Several TVs airing sports. We ordered a sushi roll and 2 nigiri which were pretty standard. I feel what really let this restaurant down was the bathroom experience -- one stall was not flushed and was not a pretty site, one stall didn't lock, (Leading me to flush the non-flushed toilet and use that stall), one sink was out of order and the general cleanliness of the stall walls and floor could have been improved. Some say judge a restaurant by the restrooms...for this I would give it two stars. An overall decent experience as far as food and ambience, however not sure if I would rush back to this chain of sushi restaurants. Another place that went downhill after the pandemic. The customer service was bad and the table was pretty much ignored until the bill came around, then the attentiveness was 100%. If you eat here with kids, make sure to specifically state that you're ordering from the kids menu, even if the kids are clearly young. Placed an online order. When I arrived to pick up order, they told me they were running behind and it would be 10 more minutes. I sat outside to waited an additional 20 minutes. I went back in to check on my order and they were still waiting on one more item. When I received my order, I drove home and while unpacking the meals I noticed that my dynamite scallops was missing. I called to let them know. Their reply was "Oh yeah, we have an extra one here. You can come back and get it." It was a 20 minute drive back so I asked for a refund on the scallops and the gratuity that was given. I just checked my account and they only refunded the scallops. Not the $18 tip. read more

This restaurant was my first introduction to sushi and it does it's job. While it isn't the best sushi spot in all the San Diego, it serves it's purpose of providing quality, fun food at a good price point at the mall. They have really great deals on their special and basic rolls compared to other spots I've been to. They have all the items (rolls, bentos, noodles, nigiri) you're looking for when coming to a sushi spot. Sushi is amazing food however, this restaurant seems to be the only one in San Diego holding on to the Covid precautions or protocols. Since they are doing this it makes the wait times excessively long and the food is not worth that. I don't understand why they won't open the bar back up and reduce the wait times as you are and will continue to lose customers. Let's wake up and get off the COVID train. Used to come here regularly with family. I have since moved away but decided to go back due to the previously good service. However the quality of the waitstaff has taken a huge downward turn. Our waiter brought out all of our entrees at random, brought the appetizers last, and made us wait for a cold option entree the longest when it should have been the easiest to prepare. Management replaced the sushi and did not charge is for it. Tried not to let it ruin our Friday night dinner. 2). Customer Service. Good and attentive. Replaced our bad order and removed it from our bill. Very thankful for the gesture. 3). Atmosphere. Very crowded with lots of children when we went on a Friday night. Used to go here and don't remember it being packed to the gills. Check wait times before you go. 4). Others. Very tight parking despite location. Close to other selections. This place is not bad. I haven't tried the rolls, so have no input there, but best place for galbi in town imo. I usually get the galbi and salmon belly. Both have always been very good and I would highly recommend! True, there may be better places, but those would require getting on the freeway and leaving town and some days I don't want to, so I go to Sushiya to satisfy that craving, and it does it well. read more

UPDATED: 6/10/18 -- staff has changed and unfortunately so has the service. Been coming here for years and used to love it. Staff is not as friendly nowadays and the atmosphere just isn't kind and happy nor as welcoming as before. As servers and restaurant front desk greeters, you'd think they would offer smiles and attentiveness... in recent time, I haven't received this expected service. On the bright side, they upgraded their menus with helpful visuals to know what we are ordering. Food is still good (thankfully), has just been slow in recent time. ******** 2017 -- Definitely a go-to place for sushi in the Eastlake / Chula Vista area for me. They recently got a new menu which is nice! And I love that for their sushi menu they've included what exactly goes into the sushi orders! Super convenient. However, I've come to learn that coming @ a busy time means having inattentive servers. Visited Sushiya today and was really disappointed with the bill. We ordered a total of 8 items. Six of the items where off the happy hour menu which runs from 1-4PM. We even where told they had $1 saki if you order a beer at the normal price. However when we received the bill we where charged at the normal price and they did not honor the happy hour pricing. They said in order to get that pricing you need to tell the server you where ordering off the happy hour menu. This seems rediculous since we pointed out the items we wanted off the menu. I was blown away they would pull such a lame tactic on a customer to maximize their profit. Reading the review on Yelp from Cynthia R. it sounds like they pull these types of shenanigans often. read more

Had a craving for sushi on my last night in town; arrived in time for a 30-45 minute wait. Found out later it was because they had a reservation for a party of 20!! Left my cell # and went shopping. When they called back, we had a choice of eating at the sushi bar or eating at the sushi bar. No problem, we ate at the sushi bar. Got the Sushiya special. The size of the sushi was smallish, but the quality was above average. Miso soup was good; the salad, though tasty, had a bit too much dressing. Started a convo with the sushi chef because he had a strong American accent though he looked Japanese; turns out he is a fellow San Franciscan, grew up in J-town! (Japan-town for anyone not familiar with the term!) We chatted happily about the bay area which helped personalize our experience. Sushiya has surprisingly great deals, has a beautiful layout to it's restaurant, friendly service, and amazing food. The two best things about this establishment is: 1) their $7.99 lunch specials on weekdays that consist of a big "bento box" of fried vegetables, California rolls, salad, rice, the "meat" or dish you choose, and a watermelon to clean your palette. The watermelon is a nice touch, and I never remember it being part of the entree before. Not to mention, it comes with miso coup. AND 2) the fact that they have half-off certain sushi rolls, hand rolls, etc. Because of this, they have reasonable prices. Some of my favorite rolls from this place are the snowball roll and dragon roll. For raw sushi, the rainbow roll is quite tasty. Also, they organize it in a "rainbow" colored manner--making it aesthetically pleasing. I've eaten at this restaurant since it first opened, and it never fails to disappoint me. read more
