He offered to make a new one for "US" to pick up and we don't have time to go pick it up so we asked him to refund and he refused and he wanted to give us a store credit instead. The place is clean and nice. I like how the area isn't brightly lit so it has a calm and casual vibe into it. We were seated right away, it was during lunch time on a Wednesday. I've been going to Sushiya otay ranch and previously Del Mar when they were open for over 10 or even 15+ years. The Del Mar location unfortunately closed but when we lived there we ordered almost every week and the hostess remembered us and would always give us complimentary soup and even an extra when my wife was pregnant. Just one of those reliable sushi places in San Diego. I have always gone to Sushiya for their lunch specials and specialty rolls! I ordered the bulging Lunch special for takeout over the phone. There are a lot of components to this lunch special, and to my surprise, it only took 15 minutes to cook and prepare! When I came and picked up my order, I looked around and saw that the layout of the restaurant slightly changed to accommodate for social distancing. The restaurant is now open again for indoor seating just a heads up. My lunch special was packed nicely in two containers-one for the assorted tempura and one for the bulgogi, rice, salad, sushi rolls, and ginger! All of that for only $10.05! Flavors are always consistent and on point. The bulgogi was very juicy and soft to bite. The salad is good with the dressing that they make. The sushi rolls were normal but I don't think it was a California roll since I didn't taste cream cheese. The tempura!!! About 6 assorted tempura (shrimp, pumpkin, zucchini, and broccoli!). Mediocre sushi and very poor customer service. However, the 50% off rolls marketing tactic they have is great. I always come here for just the garlic edamame and El Fuego roll. Last time I came here though, was the worst experience I've had at this restaurant. We witnessed our server place food at the wrong table, and then he picked it up and placed it at the correct table right after. I used to work as a server, in multiple sushi restaurants, and I know that this is an absolute no-no and is a health code issue. That customer could've been sick etc. and you're going to remove that dish and put it on the correct table right after? No. I had intended to notify the manager but forgot to by the end of my meal. Garlic edamame was overcooked and mushy, twice. After the second time, I just requested to remove it from my bill. I had requested green onion and lemon on the side, but the sushi chefs made my rolls with green onion and sliced lemon on top. I had to remove all of the lemon slices, which then removed all the green onion and fire sauce; therefore leading me to request extras of everything. This is exactly why I requested it (and clearly wrote it) on my order sheet. Overall, the customer service was poor and the server was not apologetic at all for anything. The servers here are just not very attentive and take a very long time to take your order/pick up your check. I'm a regular here because I love the El Fuego roll and this horrible experience won't stop me from coming back, but I do hope that the food becomes consistent again and that the customer service improves. read more

I recently dined here alone on a Saturday night. When I checked in around 8:30pm they said it was a 30-45 minute wait, it was pretty busy, but I got lucky and was seated within 15 minutes. I ordered the snowball roll after looking at reviews on Yelp and a Inari roll that I didn't see on the menu but asked if they had. I was very happy with both selections. The snowball roll was so delicious, it had just the right amount of spice (jalapeño) that didn't burn my mouth and the sauce was the perfect amount (not too much or too little). The Inari roll was also very good, perfect amount of sweetness and not dry. After ordering my food I waited about 15 minutes, which I didn't think was too bad and gave me an opportunity to browse the menu and enjoy my hot green tea. The restaurant closes at 9:30pm and they asked me pretty close to that time if I would like to order anything else because the kitchen was closing soon. Overall, I enjoyed my first visit. Sushiya Otay Ranch is one of our favorite local places to eat. Somewhat surprisingly for a supposed Japanese place, the kalbi ribs here are some of the best anywhere, and I try kalbi everywhere I can. I'm also a rainbow roll fan -- I often use this to gauge a sushi place -- and the one here is simple yet delicious. There are some other great rolls on the menu, with good prices. I love sashimi, but this isn't the place we go for that. Read a lot of reviews on bad service, but I come here a lot and haven't had any problems. They do get busy, but that's a good sign to me. I ordered take out and asked for lemon on the side (I usually like to squeeze lemon over my rolls) and when I went to go pick up my food and pay, I noticed they charged me a dollar. Usually I ask for lemon when I dine in and I have never been charged. But it was a dollar so I wasn't going to make a big deal about it. Unfortunately when I got home, I saw that my lemons were cut so THIN it was impossible to squeeze. They look like slices of lemon for garnish. Was I charged extra for decoration?? My husband and I had a double date with our friends here, my husband and I frequent the location in Liberty Station and love it so I was excited to see if there were any differences between the two. This Sushiya is a lot larger, plenty of seating inside with a small front patio, we were instantly greeted as soon as we walked in and the hostess was kind enough to direct us to where our friends were. The menus are the same and you order the same way, you fill out a sheet with the number of rolls or small plates you'd like and viola. There's also a bar and Bryan was really excited because they had a larger selection of beer for him. For starters, our friends ordered a miso soup with garlic edamame, and we ordered garlic edamame and baked mussels. Upon ordering, our friends mentioned to the server that they'd like a side of cilantro to go with their soups. We pass our server our list of rolls and he's off. The starters not including my mussels arrived promptly, but we were missing the side of cilantro. We had to stop another server for the cilantro and I asked about my mussels, this server let me know that it takes the longest to make so it should be coming out with the rolls and it did. Our friends had their rolls and I had mine, but Bryan sat their waiting for his. We all start eating our sushi while Bryan nibbles on the nigiri he ordered. After waiting some time I noticed that there were two handrolls on the table, I asked our friends if it was there's and they said no. I flag down any server (ours is no where to be found) to let them know and they go and grab our server who then he double checks his list, he shows that we marked it correctly so I feel less worried that it was our fault. While he's there our friends ask for a fork to eat their sushi (I know what you guys are thinking....noobs lol) he takes away the hand rolls and mentions he'll look for forks and heads back to the sushi bar. Eventually, Bryan gets his rolls but our friends don't get their fork, I am annoyed at this point, so I get up from my seat and walk over to the bar and grab two forks for them, I knew deep down our server was never going to come back with one and I was right. I would not come here again, service is horrible our server never came by to check on us, we had to constantly flag down other servers, our waters were never re-filled and when my husband got his second beer he noticed it was not the one he had ordered. He ended up drinking it because our server (man bun) would probably never come back until he had to drop off the check. The food was okay, don't get their mussels, I always get mussels at the Liberty Station location and it's so tasty, but the one here is gross.
