If you have the SusieCakes app on your phone (and you should, if you like cake) b/c they give you a free slice for your birthday (good the entire month of your birthday, which gives you plenty of time to redeem). I usually redeem this at my local Laurel Heights location in SF. But I was in Texas this June, there is only one location in Dallas. To make the trip all the way downtown not just for one thing, we found a place for lunch around the corner and then went to pick up my free slice. If you are there and served by the sweetest counter gal named Naybi count yourself lucky, she was a doll and hooked me up with a huge piece of cake and even a free cookie (I wanted to pay cash for the cookie, but she said she would just give it to me since they don;t accept cash, I can't guarantee that will happen to you - but I don't think this is my first free cookie there either.) Naybi just the best energy and so nice (and very "on brand" for the happiness that should be involved for a cake store). SusieCakes has the absolute best vanilla buttercream icing. I don't get to this side of town very often, but when I do, I try to make time to stop here. I tried the whoopie pie this time, and it was so good! The cookie was perfectly crisp outside and chewy inside. My son said the chocolate cake was the best he'd ever had. My only disappointment was a big one, though. My husb and I each had a piece of the seasonal lemon blueberry cake, and it was soooo dry and practically inedible. I arrived quite early for a prepaid order and asked if my order was done, I could see it sitting on the shelf and I noted that to the woman at the register, and they told me to wait. No problem, I ran an errand and came back. They still left me sitting after I came back for more than 30 minutes, despite the store being empty, for an order that was still sitting on the shelf. They continued to refuse to acknowledge me after several people arrived at my pick up time. When they finally decided to acknowledge me, despite the fact I had been standing in the online order pick up spot,, they seemed confused by the email receipt that I showed them, and looked at me like they didn't understand what I was showing them, despite the fact all of the correct information was listed, and it was clearly paid for. I went in to order a cake for my best friend's 28th birthday. We did the 9-inch funfetti/party cake. The staff is extremely friendly, and the cake was absolutely delicious! The storefront itself is very clean, smells great, and I love how you can see people working on cakes through the glass. Unfortunately, the lettering on the cake just wasn't as professional as I expected for the price. It was legible, but looked like something a middle schooler could've done. We ordered a 9" Celebration cake from here for a birthday and it was a big hit with everyone at the party. And wow, do you get a lot of cake. It may be 9" wide but it's probably 12" tall. The 6" cake would have been plenty as there was a lot of cake left over. Next time 6" for sure. They also have a friendly staff that loves working there. If it weren't for the extra friendly and super helpful sweet staff, I would have given this review probably 1 obligatory star. I would have to say that at approximately $8 for a slice of cake that was soooooo incredibly dry was a bit more than insulting. They claim to be made daily but I truly feel lied to. We got several slices of different cakes and each were all terribly stale and dry, so it was not just one that may have been off. The branding and packaging are nice, but I'd prefer a delicious and moist quality cake over an instagram ready marketing cake any day. When Whole Foods can serve a far more superior cake that comes in frozen better and way less expensive than Susie Cakes, that is such a shame. Won't be back no matter how good it looks from the outside. To me, what counts is the actual product being fresh. Ps. I noticed that several people have complained about the same thing and the owner gives the same standard excuse and blames her staff, but this leads me to believe that not only does she already know about this, but might even encourage them to overlook it as to avoid food costs being lost at the clients expense. I went into Susie's to place an order for 24 football themed cupcakes. The gentleman who worked the cashier offered me a ipad to scroll through a bunch of pictures. No direction or insight, also failed to mentioned no custom cupcakes less than 24 hours. With a constant push for help in a creative direction. I finally asked to speak with the baker who does. He didn't really want to get him for me but the Baker(man) came out. No smile, no greeting, straight to the point. There's not much I can do design wise to help you. Actually won't be able to do this order less than 24hours without a pre order. Could've saved me a bunch of time and energy if I was advised when I stated I needed them today. Overall the feeling I felt was not of feeling helped, or cared for. Lack of customer service or support. Even the female cashier didn't seem like she wanted to offer me assistance. Went to Susie Cakes at Preston Center. It's my favorite. They really give the best customer service (call customer by name familiar with your choices, open the door for me I walk with a cane).
