We were highly impressed with our first Susie Cake a few years ago, however our excitement at the Pasadena store opening and the dozen cupcakes purchased for my nephew's birthday Sunday left us quite disappointed. We bought one of each available flavor (for a few flavors, two each), but apart from the strawberry lemonade and two chocolate variations, the other cupcakes were DRY! We love coconut flavored cakes, but this one tasted dried-out. Delicious frosting throughout, but the cakes themselves should be more moist. When I had a question I called the store, and they were so helpful. I was worried the sprinkles would be too much, but it was just the right amount. See picture. I also noticed there is a free parking lot behind the store , so don't bother paying for parking in front. I have been seeing more and more Susie cakes around and thought it was about time to give it a try. The cupcake flavors were extremely boring vanilla, coconut, chocolate, and strawberry. Even the whole cakes were just basic options (carrot cake, red velvet, chocolate, vanilla) Nothing unique and the cupcake was extremely sweet to me. It tastes exactly like a packaged cupcake I could buy from the average grocery store. I also tried a chocolate chip cookie and that was very disappointed. The cookies were completely deflated. For starters it is such a cute shop, exterior makes you want to come inside and when you do, you are met with the friendliness of the staff. The cupcakes looked delicious and were! Their vanilla is by far the best vanilla cupcakes my mother and I have tried and as bakers ourselves, i do not say this lightly. The cakes and cupcakes are famous for a reason--real buttercream frosting and just old-fashioned yumminess. They have my son's fave cake, so we ordered the marble cake (swirls of chocolate in vanilla cake) with vanilla buttercream with chocolate chips between layers, and chocolate buttercream frosting. It's rich. It's moist. It's gooey even. And did I mention the chocolate chips? With this cake, a smaller slice will give you all the sugar-pow you may be craving without going for seconds--although we love having leftovers for breakfast. Doesn't everyone? I don't do Yelp reviews, but I had to come to Yelp to praise this location's fabulous (manager?) Laura, who helped me over the phone when my preorder from Door Dash was never actually placed. (So be careful out there. Not a bad idea to check that SusieCakes really receives your order!) Anyway, I was concerned to learn on the day of my son's birthday that SusieCakes did not have the order but Laura was amazing and helped to fix everything. We ended up cancelling the (non) order from Door Dash and instead ordered directly from the bakery. By this point, we decided to pick the cake up ourselves, although SusieCakes can have it delivered but that was a bit pricey. All in all, I found the staff (I spoke to Isabelle, too) was so great and really worked to get this cake ready for us. The cake was impressive and fresh and the service was next-level. And that would have been enough for a 5 star review. But here comes the rave part: Laura included a personal note thanking me for my patience (hey, it wasn't Susie's fault in the first place) and wishing my son a happy birthday. I was largely disappointed with my experience here. I came into it thinking this was one of the top bakeries in LA. I ordered a 6" round chocolate cake for a birthday. The cake was $55.00. The size to price ratio is very high. They made me schedule a pickup time for the cake because they say they are extremely busy and there will be a line out the door. When I arrived, there were no customers in the store. I justified the price to myself by thinking the cake was going to excellent. It was not. It wasn't bad in any way but it was similar in quality to what you could buy at a normal grocery store for less than $20.00. I can't see myself returning here again. It pains me to write this review but I must say I was very disappointed in my 45th birthday lemon cake. I had this exact cake some time ago for another friend's birthday (purchased from a different location) and had been eagerly hoping lemon would be in season for March 7. I ordered the cake and we ate it that night but it was dried out. We threw 3/4 of the cake in the trash. I messaged Susie Cakes about the quality and they acknowledged the feedback and offered to share it with their team. Maybe this was a one off? I adore SusieCakes and I was so excited to find out that they now have a location in Pasadena. In terms of the baked goods they have to offer, it's always wonderful and sweet. I do have to give only two stars because the service is not always as strong as other locations. I usually go to the one in La Brea. On one specific occasion, last Saturday, I went in and placed my order: one box of four cupcakes, one cupcake and one cookie. I repeated it three times and the cashier was not understanding it. I thought she understood a third time, but she still gave me the wrong order. I thought it was me because I had a mask on so maybe it was muffled. Someone next to me understood my order and so we were surprised it was incorrect. I ended up taking home the four cupcakes but I received a cupcake I didn't ask for, in place of the cookie. Also, she didn't understand I was okay with paying cashless. She kept telling my mother it was cashless even though I was at the one placing the order and my card was ready. I'm a little disappointed because I was really craving that cookie but by all means, everything else was good. I just didn't appreciate the service on this day. So I think I found my go-to bakery. I just stopped by here today and the two young women who were working were so lovely and helpful, I had to leave a review. I was looking for a cake for my housekeeper who's retiring and went with the chocolate based on their recommendation. I also bought a red velvet cupcake and a chocolate cupcake for myself and the girl behind the cash register threw in a free coconut cupcake and strawberry lemonade cupcake (I was ogling those too but couldn't decide lol). I devoured all four cupcakes when I got home. I have to say, red velvet, chocolate and strawberry lemonade flavors were my favorites... so so delicious! Perfectly sweet, perfect frosting to cake ratio, the frosting was outstanding and the cake was moist. What else can you ask for? I think one of the girls told me that the strawberry lemonade flavor was a seasonal flavor and that this was the last day for it? Please please make it a permanent flavor! We have been to Susie Cakes in Costa Masa and had incredible pieces of cake. We got excited when a friend told us they planned on opening in Pasadena. We went on opening day and there was just to many people. We drove over Wednesday only to find they where closed? Having owned a couple restaurants I always say why close, I'm paying rent everyday. So Friday we drove over and walked into a very nicely decorated store with lots of staff to serve you. There's a large window where you can watch them decorating cakes. I bought a slice of the Lemon cake and the Carrot cake. Big disappointment!! Last night after dinner we looked forward to our cake. The cake slices where precut and waiting on the shelf. I think the slice of Lemon cake may have been cut for the opening day 7 days ago. It was extremely dry and my wife said I don't want to eat this. I tried a bite of the carrot cake. It's full of carrots, nuts and raisins but it was also on the dry side. Sorry to say we won't be back. We'll stick with the delicious Hummingbird cake across the street. read more
