This year for my birthday, I decided to try this bakery as they are originally based in Chicago, which my brother swears has the best food. Additionally, it's a women owned business, so it was clear this was the place to order my birthday cake from. Plus they have same day delivery options, which made it even more convenient for me since I waited until the last moment to decide what I wanted. I went with the 6" vanilla celebration cake with SusiePink writing and confetti sprinkles. Let me just say how gorgeous of a cake it is. Simple, but impressive. I only had one minor issue. The cake texture was not as soft as I usually prefer, but overall it was still a delicious cake. If you enjoy birthday cake ice cream, I highly recommend to pair this cake with vanilla ice cream. I'm so happy my first experience exceeded my expectations! The cakes were not only moist and rich, but also airy. The icing/frosting was a tab sweet but overall the flavor was good. I also loved how spacious the shop is! They have a retro look which I found really cute! All in all, yummy cakes that baked from scratch. They also have cupcakes and doggie cookies, will be back to try more! Pro tip: How to store the cake in the fridge and keep from hardening overnight? Like my throat actually felt dry after just a few bites- that's how dry it was. I don't know, maybe it was just a bad batch or something because I certainly hope that's not how the cake was intended to be. The luscious lemon cake was infinitely better, as the cake itself was moist and spongey with a delicious lemon curd filling and buttercream frosting. Okay so let me start by saying the chocolate frosting marble cake we got was really good! Until I found the piece of metal in it when it stabbed the roof of my mouth.... I called in the piece of metal I found and they did sound apologetic and refunded my cake for me but that was it. I offered to bring it in so they can try and see where it maybe came from so they can avoid future mishaps but they didn't seem interested in that. I also expected maybe a gift card or something for future orders but nada. Overall when I picked up the cake the service wasn't so great but could be because of the holiday traffic, the location parking sucked terribly but again not really their fault but the actual store itself was very clean and well kept. I think if I didn't find metal in my cake, which I can't imagine is a common occurrence, I'd be rating it 4-5 stars. Unfortunately with how it was handled and the fact I found it I gotta give them 2. Overall still would recommend but would also recommend to check before you bite down. read more

I love peanut butter cookies so much that I will generally drive from Altadena to Westwood for Diddy Reese's peanut butter cookies. I've been patiently waiting for SusieCakes to open in Pasadena for about a month, so when the day finally came I was excited! Apparently, I wasn't the only one because when I arrived there was a line to get in. Fortunately, it moved quickly because the staff had everything organized and under control. They were all friendly and enthusiastic despite being so busy. Unfortunately, I had a hectic schedule so I was unbale to stay for the Grand Opening Celebration, which included a DJ, face painting, and other fun activities. The shop is spacious and immaculate with lots of delicious cakes, cupcakes, and cookies in the display case. Everything is made in house (there's a kitchen in the back) and you can watch the bakers making/preparing the tasty treats. Cakes are available for purchase whole or by the slice. To be honest, I wanted one of everything! I noticed they had a German Chocolate Cupcake (seasonal). German Chocolate cake is something that you don't see very often, so I selected one of those. For some reason, (I'm not sure why) I've been craving coconut cake and they happened to have a Coconut Cupcake, so I got that too. I also ordered a Pink Vanilla Cupcake and a Chocolate Chip Cookie. The cookies had just come out of the oven while I was making my selections. The Chocolate Chip Cooke was huge and it was still warm when I got home, which I loved because the chips were slightly melted. The cookie was soft and chewy. I warmed up the other half the next day and it was just as delicious. The cupcakes were also exceptionally good. Dense and moist with a generous amount of fluffy frosting on top and a dollop inside. The German Chocolate did not disappoint, and the Coconut Cupcake satisfied my craving. The Pink Vanilla Cupcake was also fantastic. You could taste the vanilla in the frosting. Overall, I was impressed with the quality, freshness, and taste of these delightful delicacies. Tip: 90 min free parking in the lot behind the store. Credit card only. No cash. So excited to have SusieCakes open up in Pasadena - I've been a fan of their celebration cake and cupcakes for awhile, but the locations have always been out of the way. Now SusieCakes has joined the shops in Pasadena, close to Mendocino Farms and Randy's Donuts. I was able to visit on grand opening day and even met Susie herself! There was a bit of a line, but the wait was not bad at all. Loved that they had a ton of activities for the kids - unfortunately we came near the end of the day, so a lot of items were sold out. I wanted to get a few cupcakes, but left with two slices of cake. If you order on-line, it says there's a 2 specialty cake slice order for $15.50. If I remember correctly, I think each slice is about $7ish, so that 2-specialty slice is kind of forcing the customer to order 2 slices of cake. Not sure if it's because the cakes had been sitting out for awhile, but the texture was a little more on the dry side. I tried the luscious lemon cake - which has 4 layers of vanilla cake with fresh lemon curd and vanilla buttercream as well as some crunchy sprinkles on the side for added texture - was expecting it to taste light and fluffy, but the cake was definitely more dense and heavy. The buttercream with the lemon sprinkles was pretty delicious, but I felt like the buttercream was too thick. And the lemon curd tasted artificial and not tasty at all. This was unfortunately not a good cake - and for the price of almost $7-8 for a slice, will not order this again. And left with the vanilla celebration cake. Loved this cake when I tried it from their other stores. Not only is the pale mint color so pretty, but the sugar confetti cake adds a cute touch to the overall cake. This was also about $7-8 for a slice. Cake was not as heavy as the lemon one, but it was more on the doughy and tough side despite us eating it that day. The buttercream was luscious and amazing though, but after several hours, it had hardened and wasn't as creamy. Was excited for the cakes, but unfortunately I didn't enjoy them as much as I would have liked. Will be back for some cupcakes and to try the vanilla celebration slice again. Flavors seemed limited, but I got there in the afternoon when red velvet cupcake was sold out. The next best thing, I got a slice of red velvet cake instead. Vacillating between two and three stars, but it's a store that opened during the pandemic - so I'm going with three. Suzy Cakes is the epitome of sweet but pricey cupcakes. Came here 5 minutes after opening on a weekday and there were already three customers ahead of us. Cute, trendy, and clean and tidy interior design, but no dedicated areas to sit and eat, either inside or outside. Customer service was very proactive and helpful. We purchased the red velvet cupcake, which was the more moist of the two, but it was quite scant on frosting. Yummy, but honestly not much to write home about, especially given the price and pretty marginal frosting. We also got the vanilla frosting/vanilla cake cupcake, which had a much better and more generous frosting:cupcake ratio. The frosting on this one was SUPER tasty - some of the best frosting I've had in a while - but the cake portion, while tasty, was actually on the drier side. My husband mentioned this too without any prompting. And honestly - these cupcakes are on the smaller side for being $9+ for the two of them. Might try the cake at some point - looked pretty nom nom, at least while on display. All in all, maybe a fun place to go for a treat, but unfortunately a tad on the disappointing side, especially given the pricing and lackluster quality between the two cupcakes we sampled.
