I wanted to try SusieCakes and compare them to my favorite chain cupcake place. Their decor is just.... Well... so nostalgic, I simply love it!! It's obvious to me that they spent a lot of time on the branding of the name and concept. 10 stars in my book. The server's were nice and also helpful. I ordered 2 lemon cupcakes and a slice of the lemon poppyseed cake with buttercream frosting on top. $19+ for said items. The server put them into 2 beautiful boxes and a very nice bag. "Price 3 stars, boxes 10 stars" SusieCakes does not take cash! "I'm personally not happy about that" I don't want to hear your excuses why you are doing that, I do not and never will like that. That alone is reason enough for me not to go back. I had a slice of the lemon poppyseed cake at room temp per instructions with a glass of milk. I felt like the buttercream tasted like every other buttercream, nothing special. The lemon filling in between the slices was also just ok but the combination of the lemon filling and buttercream made the slice of cake very, very sweet, did I say sweet? I mean way way way too sweet. I love Susiecakes and often buy their cakes and cupcakes for family birthdays. Last spring I had their pina colada cake for my own birthday-YUM More recently I was on the hunt for a gluten free cake for a dear friend's celebration. Finding tasty gluten free cake in the area can be challenging especially if you want variety and customization. Suzie Cakes was Not my first choice because the website shows only one option for gluten free cakes- vanilla cake with blue vanilla frosting. So I went looking elsewhere and ran into similar issues with limited cake flavor options. I came back to Susiecakes because I knew I would at least get a tasty cake.. and when I went into the store, I learned that I could get other frostings even though it was not well communicated on the website. I chose vanilla gluten-free cake layered with the strawberry buttercream and decided to purchase a cupcake version of those flavors to taste test before ordering it. Surprisingly, the store clerk didn't charge me for cupcake! That more than made up for having to drive over to ask about other frosting flavors. The next day I worked with one of their customization team specialists, Claud, to work out the details for the custom decoration. Claud was amazing. He emailed me color samples to be sure I agreed- he emailed me a detailed description on the decoration plan while I was on the phone with him just to be sure we were crystal clear. I'm giving a high rating because I never had a cake that I didn't like at Susie Cakes, but also a high rating for the customer service in the store and over the phone/email with the customization group. Love me some Susie Cakes! I come by and get a slice annually for my birthday. It's one of the sweeter cakes but somehow it's deliciously sweet. The vanilla celebration cake is top tier and sweet buttercream frosting pairs so wonderfully with their moist cake. Every now and then I mix it up with a slice of peppermint cake. It took another 20-25 minutes on top of that! Altogether, the order was nearly 45-50 minutes late. I didn't realize how long he had been gone until he called, and by then I was already deep into day-of party prep. I called the store to understand what happened. They apologized again and said they were short-staffed. I asked what they could do to make up for the delay, especially since we intentionally pre-ordered to avoid last-minute issues. The representative offered a $25 store credit--which felt surprisingly low considering the $100 price of the cake, the significant delay, and the lack of any proactive communication. We didn't even receive a heads-up call about the situation. The rep later put me on hold and came back to say they would instead refund $25 to my card. I first had SusieCakes when I was in Southern California and was happily surprised when I found out they had a location here close to me. I am pretty particular about desserts as I often like to bake as well. There are tons of dessert shops with good cheesecakes, cookies, ice cream, etc - but cakes and particularly cupcakes - good ones - are hard to come by. Although many shops have cute cakes/cupcakes with good decorations - it's hard to find a place that has good cake slices and cupcakes that are moist and taste good. SusieCakes is one of those places. While I still prefer the cake slices - still much more moist - the cupcakes are also yummy. My go to order here is a slice of the old fashioned chocolate cake - a towering mass of chocolate goodness! I cannot finish a slice by myself and either have to share it with friends or save it for a few days' worth of treats. Another favorite is the tropical coconut, which is probably not for everyone. This one is sweeter than I am used to, but still good with a glass of milk. As for the cupcakes, I've had a few different ones throughout the years - chocolate, coconut, mint chip (a seasonal one?) and a few others I can't remember at this point. They were all great. The cookies are good as well. Service has always been friendly and quick whenever I've stopped by. I also like how there is always a variety of flavors to choose from - even if I tend to stick to the same ones.
