I'm at a loss at what to review this place. On one hand, they didn't have a lot of higher end options. On the other hand, they did have a lot of affordable options that were good. Some of the staff were really cold and left us to our own devices (at least we got a bottle of Caymus during the trip...) Some of the staff legit called us their wine heroes as we made our final purchase. We came to this store because it was open on a Sunday night. I'd definitely give it another chance. Until this year, they would wrap bottles and deliver gifts (albeit, at an extra charge). However, this year, they told me that they were ending deliveries outside their immediate neighborhood. They blame being short-staffed and the expense of a messenger service for this decision. The Sutton Wine Shop has been around for years. I grew up with this place, worked here for many years during school breaks, and we were even involved in a bit of a sticky situation (Danny, Lizette, Albert, and me). This place cares about its customers and goes the extra mile to make sure you are taken care of. I got my mom a monthly wine present for x-mas the past four or five years. They send a bottle every month with a note about the wine and where it came from and the like. Not many places would do such a thing. They go out of their way to make sure you are informed about what you are buying and these guys know their wine. Dan is a wine expert and will probably be able to help you out for any occasion. In short, the prices are reasonable, albeit on par with the neighborhood, and the service is unmatched. These guys treat you like you are family. Customer service is in abundance. Just gave them a whirl for online hootch delivery to my office. I was quite surprised that the prices are comparable to my mom & pop places in Queens. A very nice and professional gentleman called me to verify the latest time they could deliver. A very pleasant delivery man was at my office on time, patiently waiting for me to make my way downstairs. And, with my wee coupon code (which offset delivery fee and most of the taxes)....they actually wound up being just about the same amount I pay at my local place....without me spending precious after work time running yet another errand....and without being in a physical store, giving into the temptation to add more into a cart without seeing my subtotal grow on a screen. I actually took a wines class in college (it was one of the most popular classes for credit and everything!) but I sadly and unfortunately don't remember much other than the major wine regions and varietals ("But shouldn't you know this stuff?" says everyone). So, I was more than relieved when I walked into Sutton Wine Shop and was greeted and guided towards the perfect bottle for a dinner at a BYO restaurant. I asked for a medium-bodied, preferably French red that would work well with poultry and pork. With a twinkle in his eye, the staff member (I should have asked for his name!) led me to the Pinot Noir section and went on a very easy-to-understand spiel about the sorts of wines he recommended, as well as some personal stories. He also actually pushed for wines in the $15 to $25 range, and said that there really was no reason to spend money when a perfectly wonderful wine could be purchased for cheaper. They have a wide selection of wines and a smaller selection of other spirits. There's a whole shelf near the entrance that features wines that are "buy 1 get one 50% off". They make deliveries within NYC and will even gift wrap. Online shopping is also available on their website, but the warm helpfulness of the staff is something worth coming in for. There's a 10% off check-in offer! Likelihood of another visit: "Have a nice dinner! Come back and let us know what you thought!" Will do. They also have weekly wine tastings! read more

This little neighborhood wine shop has really come through for me on those few occasions when I'm running off to a party and need to pick up a bottle of wine ASAP. The staff are friendly and helpful, but not pushy or overbearing. The store is small and the selection may not be as wide as say the Astor Wine Shop. But they have a whole section up by the counter of "Buy One, Get One 50% Off" wines, all reasonably priced. Perfect for stocking the pantry, or for my last minute stop-ins. I love their 2nd bottle deals - they have very decent wines in the $10-$15 range so two for $16 is a sweet deal. They are open late and they are oh-so-close to me, which is nice. And they do have other deals like "Every Pinot on sale!" But if you are looking for a specific bottle, I would go to a place with more selection. You will pay a lot more here. Example - needed a Muscadet for dinner once night. This is highest-produced wine in the entire Loire region - i.e., a bottle that should NEVER exceed $9. At Sutton it's $10.99. I also came in here looking for a Gewrztraminer. This wine should have a good range of options but at Sutton they only had ONE type for $17.99. I was so annoyed! read more

The staff is super friendly with great senses of humor and they are always ready with suggestions when I'm searching for gifts or wines for special events. I always walked by this location. Got an iPhone recently, and downloaded the YELP APP, which I am hooked on!! So they have this application that has a function called monocle. If you don't use it, definitely do so, it is amazing. Was going to my buddy's place to catch a basketball game, I was toying around with the YELP APP, and saw that if I checked in here I would receive 10% off my purchase which I was more than happy to use as I was going to purchase a bottle of wine regardless. This might be a real pop & mom wine shop. I think the owner really does appreciate wine and there is a good selection at all price ranges. Still, the prices are higher than many neighboring shops. For example, I paid $24 for a La Crema Chard that costs $17 at Crush a few blocks away. So unless it's late and you MUST have that good bottle, I would shop at Crush or Sherry-Lehman in this neighborhood. read more

An event coordinator's nightmare turned success story: I was in a really tough spot - I had 18 bottles of white wine from Sherry Lehman for a corporate party, and was shocked to hear from my bartender mid-party that 15 of the bottles were sour. Awful. I walked into the store looking for a recommendation from the ACTUAL owner and he sold me actual crap that he was looking to get rid of. When I brought it back the employees (who are actually very good) they almost vomited when they saw the actual brown, disgusting shit that poured out of the bottle. If you are looking for real help picking out wine I have always gotten good, HONEST help from Crush on 57th and 3rd. A week later, after hurricane, stopped in and tried to stick with good wines. I wanted to have a case of wine delivered to a friend as a gift. Nick picked up the phone when I called from Charlotte, NC. He could not have been more polite and helpful! Nick worked within my budget to pull together a nice selection of Sauvignon Blanc's and asked if I would like to enclose a gift card and wrote out my message. They delivered it to my friend's apartment building a few blocks away. No charge for delivery. This really is a wonderful find in Manhattan. You would think that based upon their location that prices would be outrageous, but they are not! They generally offer some very good wines for "buy one, get the second one half price." Nice little neighborhood shop. A little too convenient (if you know what I mean!), as I've been popping in for their Thursday and Friday night tastings a bit!
