I went to Swedish for 3 years for a yearly visit. With every year I asked to have the same spot addressed they finally biopsied a small area of it year three, and told me it was folliculitis. I called back get my diagnoses(because they didn't call me) and let them know it wasn't healing, they said that can happen. So I assumed this was normal. I decided this year I will go to a new derm elsewhere. My new doctor completely removed the area and let me know it was a Basel cell carcinoma which is a little more alarming than a inflamed hair follicle. I do not recommend going here. read more

I recently had a procedure done at this office and have nothing but wonderful things to say. Dr. Rubinstein was extremely helpful and her assistant and her made my experience a positive one. My procedure only took a few minutes, but during this time they played music that made my appointment more comfortable and relaxing. Many doctor's offices I've gone to have made me wait well past my appointment time. With that said, I'm happy to report that I had no major concerns with scheduling an appointment and the office made sure to see me at my scheduled time. I do not recommend Emily Rubenstein or Ankita Patel at The Swedish Skin Institute. Full transparency, I've been a patient at Swedish Skin Institute since 2014, for 5 years, a loyal patient. Firstly, sharing some history to how I discovered Emily Rubenstein. I was originally a patient of Ankita Patel years ago before Swedish Skin Institute, who referred me to Emily Rubenstein after my previous dermatologist closed her office. Therefore, I've known Ankita Patel for about 9 years and trusted her recommendation. For the 5 years of going to Swedish Skin Institute, no problem, I was seeing clinic for acne, until..... I waited 7 months before posting this review in hopes to receive an apology or at least an explanation since I was a loyal patient and referred others to Swedish Skin Institute. I have not heard from Emily Rubenstein or Ankita Patel. The issue is, they lack Better Business Practices. They rescheduled my appointment three times last September 2018. I understood and changed my schedule each time. The appointment finally arrived and I was at Swedish Skin Institute on-time. I checked-in but the Office Manager came out and said I will not be seen unless I allow her to scan my drivers license into their system. Why ask me now after 5 years? Admittedly, I didn't have it but I asked if I can bring it and only show it for her to confirm as I have done that before. She said, "no, that it's hospital rules". So odd, I explained that I need to understand why storing drivers licenses in hospital system is a must versus her looking at the ID. Considering medical systems are the highest at being hacked. At this point, I feel Swedish Skin Institute is collecting data information for what purpose? Selling info to data collectors? Other medical facilities give you the option to show it or let them copy it. Nevertheless other facilities give options. Either way insurance companies do not require it. The outcome, the Office Manage said that I won't be seen that day, not until they can scan my ID, which I didn't have with me. Okay, they have already been seeing me for 5 years, my bills paid by my insurance and I've never missed an appointment. Seen my ID before, so what's the problem? Put this in perspective, I had to leave the office after they rescheduled appt multiple times, I wasted money on Uber and I was humiliated by the Office Manager who felt empowered to take a stand on an issue she created--keep in mind I was a dependable patient for 5 years. Afterwards I left, I went to follow-up with Swedish Medical policy while I was there, that's the reporter in me. I explained to Parient Care that Swedish Skin Institute claimed that I was not to be seen because of Swedish Medical policy to only see patients who will let them scanned ID into system. To my surprise, they said, "Not True", it is not required. Swedish Medical explained that they did not understand why Swedish Skin Institute is refusing to see scheduled patients because of patients not wanting IDs scanned. They further explained that they no longer scan IDs into their systems because they recognize it as sensitive info. Instead, the Medical facility has installed cameras to take pictures of patients to avoid storing sensitive info that can be hacked. In regards to Swedish Skin Institute, they have not received cameras yet but Swedish Medical said that they shouldn't force patients to have their IDs scanned into system. They're exact words, " just see your patients and copy insurance cards". I left messages with Swedish Skin Institute and sent personal message to Emily Rubenstein and Ankita Patel to share Swedish Medical policy that their Office Manager was wrong and shouldn't have canceled my appointment while I was there and humiliate me. I thought for sure I would hear back from Emily Rubenstein and Ankita Patel before any of this happened, I assumed they were individuals of integrity--Wrong, not a word for 7 months. Don't let them scan your drivers license into their system. read more

Dr. Rubenstein has been an absolute joy. I came in around January of last year wanting to finally take care of my acne that has been plaguing me since I was about 12, and I'm 28 now. I tolkd the Dr that I wanted to immediately go on Accutane, because I had been denied the treatment by previous dermatologists who had decided that my acne was not "severe" enough. Dr. Rubenstein immediately agreed that Accutane was the best choice, and we began the process. Of course, you need to go through a month or two of trying non-accutane medications just to be absolutely sure that there are no other options before starting this extremely strong (and in some cases, dangerous) drug, and we did that, and eventually I began Accutane. Scheduling my appointments has always been a joy, the two people working at the front desk have always been sweet and polite, and the girl, Brittany i think - always chats with me when I come in about my nails. So nice! The Dr is very kind and empathetic and will absolutely listen to your questions and concerns, but she is also no-nonsense and will tell you what you need to know, not what you want to hear, which i appreciate. She's the best. Also her medical students and assistants are so friendly and seem like they genuinely enjoy being there. I was made to feel so comfortable and accepted and cared for while a patient of Dr. Rubenstein's. I am now through with my accutane treatment and my skin is clear and soft and smooth, and has been for quite a while. I feel so blessed to have been a patient of hers. Also, she accepts a lot of different insurances! I am on Medicaid, Blue Cross FHP. I was surprised to find such a wonderful doctor who accepts my insurance. I did not pay for a single thing out of pocket, including my medication and blood tests. As for the woman who said she was upset about not being able to get an appointment - um, if you thought it was cancer, why didn't you immediately go to an oncologist? You've seen the articles, the images, the warning signs: My Handsome Boyfriend had a constellation of them. No, he wasn't worried.., because it didn't hurt. Scared me though. He doesn't regularly wear sunscreen- despite being fair. Outdoor feats of athleticism mean he is going to be burned, peeling, possibly blistered with oozing painful red summer skin that he denies is as agonizing as it looks. This office was very efficient, easy to schedule with, the referral and insurance process seamless and the front desk staff friendly, professional, even had no waiting. Great care of Boyfriend and all the suspect spots. Best of all, he now responsibly applies sunscreen. Good sunscreen, high spf regularly, taking the cancer threat seriously. I was referred to the Swedish Skin Institute by my PCP on August of 2019. Dr. Rubenstein was an absolute joy to work with. She went over all the available options for my skin problem (cystic acne) and guided me through every step of the way. Treatments/medications/lab results were thoroughly explained, and all my questions were answered promptly. The results from my treatment went above and beyond my expectations. After reading the excellent reviews on Yelp, I contacted the Swedish Skin Institute via their website to request a consultation. I received an immediate automatic email response informing me that they will be in contact with me soon. I waited for two weeks and never received a phone call or email to set up a consultation. Therefore, I called them during business hours. I received their answering machine stating to leave a message and they will contact me the next business day. So, I left a detailed message with my contact information. Needless to say, after another week of waiting, no one contacted me. I can only assume that they are too busy to take on new clients, or they just don't care to check their answering machine or emails. I was really excited to find a good dermatologist that was relatively close to where I live. But, now I have to look for another dermatologist since they obviously don't want anymore clients. If you want procedures for aesthetic reasons, this is the place. If you have acne and like to take drugs and have time for a multi-step skincare routine, this is the place. If you want to work in harmony with your body in a more natural way, this is NOT the place. My teenager had bad acne and went here. They prescribed antibiotics which my teen reacted very badly to. When dosage increased, mood and personality changed, and muscles and bones felt awful. The doctor and assistant swore that this medication was fantastic and no one had problems with it. (Despite what google and other info says, and questions asked.) But my kid wanted acne to go away and begged to take it because this doctor recommended this drug repeatedly as "a cure for acne." Maybe it's good for clearing up acne but it also had horrible physical and psychological side effects. The reaction to this med completely screwed up a whole semester in school. Dr R knew what had happened (after I called gravely concerned and said we were stopping the med) and never even called to check in, which was disappointing because it was clear how bad things had become. Our new dermatologist was shocked that they gave him the drug (Claravis - like Acutane but rebranded due to all the bad PR about that drug) and said he NEVER prescribes it to teens because the side effects are so potentially harmful to a developing teenage brain and system. So ... if you want to treat teenage acne without harsh drugs or worry about potential side effects, go elsewhere. read more

The worst experience I've ever had, so upset and perplexed with this waste of a time appointment! Literally one of the most unprofessional doctor offices I have ever been to in Chicago! The front staff failed time and time again whether it was not responding to calls regarding blood work or appointments but also with verifying insurance information along with "needing a referral" with my doctor, but taking me in for a first appointment with NO issues and being prescribed medicine THROUGH my insurance.. I got the basis that you need a referral to be seen by a doctor that's not rocket science BUT in this particular circumstance I feel like the situation wasn't handled professionally at all! After going back-and-forth with the receptionist (who never told me her name btw) she asked if I'd like for her to go ask the manager about the situation, because at that point "it was out of her hands". She then proceeded to walk away to the back of the office and talk with who I could only assume was the office manager.. they proceeded to discuss the situation.. without me I might add! The receptionist at that time came back and proceeded to tell me the same thing she told me prior to talking to the manager which still left me unclear with the situation at hand WITH adding that I'd be billed for my first visit or I could call my insurance and "figure it out" only then did the manager then proceed to come out and explain to me the same thing about the "Referral"; I was completely unaware of this entire time, contrary to what the receptionist said she told me that I wouldn't need to worry about the billing.. After being seen, having a prescription filled, and pre-arranged a future appointment a month later and an 1 1/2 hour drive in which I was turned away.. I walked away in tears and dismayed with the outcome at what I thought was a quality office! It's just how the saying goes, "Fool me once".. read more

I moved to Chicago a couple years back and had the most difficult time finding a dermatologist I trusted. I was recommended to try Swedish Skin Institute by a friend in the neighborhood. When I first called, they told me it would be a bit of wait, but it was so worth it. I saw Ankita the physician assistant for my general dermatology problems...acne, dryness, etc. and she was so thorough and did not rush at all. She was so sweet and even called to follow up a couple days later. A year later (starting to get the wrinkles) I tried Dr. Rubenstein for fillers and Botox. I obviously was nervous because I have never had work done, let alone on my face, but Dr. Rubenstein was amazing! She knew exactly how much and what to do. She was confident and made me feel like I could trust her. My face looked great even the day after and have been there numerous times since. She has always impressed me with her work and professionalism. Although I did have to wait to initially get in, it was so worth the wait! The office is small with the only providers being Ankita and Dr. Rubenstein so it is understandable (and they're not bad to look at).
