Ahh, Sweet Adeline! Located in South Berkeley, this is a cute bakeshop that offers a fresh selection of pies, pastries, cakes, and other baked goods for your gluttonous pleasure. I've visited this place a number of times, and they have a number of standout items. One of the first items that I tried was their lemon tart, which had a thin yet firm crust and a perfectly tart filling studded with pomegranate seeds. I brought this to a potluck gathering, and it was a hit with the guests. I've also tried their lemon meringue pie, and I loved it so much, I bought a whole pie as a birthday gift for my partner. Most recently, I enjoyed their cornmeal cake with almonds and a chocolate ganache, which looks dense but is quite moist! I also was pleasantly surprised by their gluten-free lemon poppyseed cake. Overall, I find the staff friendly, and I appreciated their ability to help with my last-minute pie purchase a few months ago. Originally, I thought there was a standoffish vibe to the place, and at times, I do think some of their staff members can be more welcoming/warmer to clients. I've also noticed some flies in the display case, which is probably expected given the open space (though it's never seemed like a major infestation). We heard good review about this place and wanted to try it. We ended up getting the chocolate tort and apple walnut harvest cake. The presentation are excellent, beautifully made. The cakes are not too sweet and definitely made with fresh and quality ingredients. There are small tables outside if you want to enjoy your food right away. The not so great was the price. For this price and what we got, we felt it was a little on the expensive side. I understand we are paying the the Berkeley location, so probably wouldn't come again. read more

I ordered a carrot cake for pickup and not only was it beautifully decorated, but it was the tastiest carrot cake I've ever had! Post finals, I came here to celebrate. It was a long walk from my apartment, but it was well worth it! I bought a slice of chocolate cream pie for $4. It was rich and delicious! The whipped cream wasn't too rich--it was just right, and complemented the chocolate very well. It was enough to make me very full. I also bought my roommate a blondie. It is kind of like a brownie, but not as dark--hence its name. There's nuts and white chocolate chips inside. She said it was good! Too bad this place is so far. And I believe only the F or 18 bus will come down here. So prepare to drive/walk/wait for the bus. read more

This is probably my favorite bakery in the Bay Area. Everything is good, many things are amazing. Pies, cookies, brownies, scones, cupcakes, quiches, tarts, turnovers... My personal favorites are the chocolate cream pie (swoon), coconut cream tart, chocolate stout cupcakes, walnut brownie bar, cheddar and scallion scones, ham and arugula quiche, and walnut whopper cookies. I'm not personally much of a cake person so aside from the occasional cupcake I don't generally get cake, but I know they can do it well because the raspberry chocolate roulades for Valentine's Day were pretty great. Their staff is generally sweet and helpful. I am not the biggest fan of their hot drinks but that's not why I'm there, and let's be honest, I'm there more than is probably reasonable. We pre-ordered the pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving this year. We picked up the pie a day early and left it on the counter as instructed by the shop to be consumed the next day. The pumpkin pie was simply heavenly. It was the main topic of discussion during dessert. We were preoccupied trying to figure out what magical ingredients could have possibly been used to make such a delicious pie. Unfortunately, we did not pause to take any photos. However, since we plan to have more soon, I'll be sure to update this post with photos. I live in the neighborhood and have been visiting this shop on and off for a few years now. I placed an online order for a carrot cake for my husband's birthday. There cake was delicious and everyone loved it. I forgot to pick up the cake by their 3pm deadline, but they were super nice and called me to tell me they'd be around for a while if I can come by then. When I picked up the cake, however, they didn't give me a bag even though I paid extra for it, so I had to remind them. (The bag also cost 50 cents, so I thought it would be a nice gift bag, but it turned out to be just a plain brown bag.) I checked the cake in the car, since I figured if they forgot about the bag they might have forgotten about the extra sprinkles (which also cost extra), too. My gut feeling turned out to be right and I had to go back and ask for it. They also never emailed me the online receipt, but I was able to show them the screenshot of the order from when I checked out. Overall, great cake, but make sure to take a screenshot at the checkout, and double check your order. read more

I've dropped by Sweet Adeline Bakeshop a handful of times in order to grab a snack or coffee, especially while waiting for BART. The coffee is typically pretty solid though I usually opt to grab a latte so can't speak for every single drink on the menu! The pastries are all delicious and seem to be pretty fresh and diverse~ There isn't much seating which can be a downside to things. Because of this I wouldn't recommend going in with a crowd unless you're grabbing items to eat on the go or at another location. read more

So excited to return after a long break. My favorite go-to is the Apple Frangipane turnover. Sadly disappointed with what I got today. Did they change the recipe? The pastry was slightly burnt all over and the ends were especially dried out because there wasnt enough Apple filling, actually there was no filling at all at the two corners of the triangle. The filling in the middle was also skimpy. I remember biting into this pastry in better days, flaky crust and all, and the filling oozing out from the center. We got our wedding cake from Sweet Adeline and it was perfect. Lemon and raspberry bottom with a chocolate raspberry top layer. It was simple but elegant and sweet. And it was delicious. They were also able to provide gluten free vegan chocolate chip cookies with covered most of our guests' dietary restrictions. read more

We were so happy with the service we received from Sweet Adeline for our wedding cake. Our wedding was 6 days before Christmas and some pastry shops told us they would not make a cake that close to Christmas. Sweet Adeline was not only able to make a wedding cake, they made 3! We had a chocolate cake with chocolate ruffles, a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, and a white cake with lemon filling and a buttercream frosting. All the cakes were absolutely delicious and simply gorgeous! We also had our wedding favors done by Sweet Adeline. We had mexican wedding cake cookies and everyone loved them. It was the end of the day and closing, but they shouldn't really be selling stale stuff! Sketchy area. We eventually threw the bread we bought. Today I had a piece of artichoke and garlic focaccia bread from Sweet Adeline, and strange as it sounds... it is amazing! However I am still waiting for the return of the bacon-tomato-onion focaccia. You never know what kind of focaccia will be waiting for you at Sweet Adeline. "Cheesecake" is no simple cheesecake at Sweet Adeline. The slice had a red velvet crust, a creamy filling, and was topped with lemon... I would have taken gratuitous food porn pictures of it if I had a digital camera (but I don't). I'm so happy Sweet Adeline's is in my neighborhood! I've enjoyed bringing my grandchildren to Sweet Addie's since opening day. They enjoyed cc cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies and occasionally the chocolate cream . My favorite is the Mexican wedding cookie. Their daily sandwich is a treat with their wonderful coffee, puts me in food heaven. Amanda and her welcoming staff and the goodies can right a not so right day. Sweet Adeline is somewhere I take my friends when they visit me to experience quaint/local mom-and-pop type of bakery that is so Berkeley-esque. BAKED GOODS: The baked goods are solid. Is it like Tartine in SF? No. I wouldn't expect that at this establishments and there is definitely no wait. Their baked goods range from cookies to cakes, and even frangipane that can satiate any sweet baked sweet tooth anybody has got. I don't think I have had a baked good I did not like, but I would not go as far to say it's the most out of the world bakery either. SERVICE: I will say, the service here is a bit hit and miss. Sometimes people are attentive and helpful, other times I have been, it's been quick and not so friendly. Overall, Sweet Adeline epitomizes what Berkeley goes for. One of the cutest little bakeries I've been to in Berkeley! They have all types of traditional pies that you could want or think of as well as a bunch of other kinds of delicious pastries and cakes too. I've never tried a rhubarb or strawberry rhubarb pie until trying it here, and it was really sweet and heavenly. However, what I typically look for in pies are their crusts - and this place has the most wonderful homemade crisscrossed flaky crust brushed with egg and sugar before baking! Really fantastic pies, and though the prices are high, the demand for their pies are really high too (or maybe it's just because I went on Pi Day). This is truly a great bakery. Pretty much everything they make is one of kind delicious. But ... The writing seems to be on the wall. They removed all the prices on their products. Now you have to ask "How much is this? How much is that?" Cringeanomics time follows thereafter. The tactic is very French Laundry, "If you have to ask, you shouldn't shop here, you cheap pig." And cheap pigs never like those kiosk payment systems, which guilt you into a high tip, on an already overpriced drink and some baked goods. I imagine the employees are eating the difference. They might be wise to relocate to Emeryville, which actually appreciates small business and has many developers that would likely cut breaks to have an anchor business. Likely this would equate to reduced overhead, which should theoretically translate to increased revenue and better margins, and likewise tips going up. Also, no tent enclaves. Good Luck. It's a perfect example of what makes Berkeley such an amazing place -- really fine food with fresh seasonal ingredients, a local business with a consciousness to be concerned about the neighborhood and its residents, including those less fortunate, supportive of local artists by displaying their artwork on their walls, and people who work there who are efficient, friendly and helpful. All of this and some of the best baked goods you'll find anywhere. Their crostata with cherries is divine. Although the fruit buckle with pineapple was also spectacular. I love the cakes and pastries here!! The quality is great, the amount of sugar here is not as high as many other bakeries. I love how all their "simple" cakes tastes more than just a simple cake.
