One star too many for this bakery who was not only unable to provide decent customer service, but also added insult to injury by hanging up 6 times on phone calls made from 2 different phone, claiming "you were breaking up." Their music and background noise was so unbelievably loud, we could barely hear them. After 12 minutes on hold for the manager, they also hung up. All but one of the products purchased on 9-4-22 were stale. Finally, after such incompetent phone service, we drive to Berkeley from East Oakland to speak in person. The owner did not apologize for the hang ups and instead chastised me for my phone. The denied the hang up after 12 minutes on hold waiting for manager--who is actually the insolent and condescending new owner. No apology for stale baked goods, just arguing and defending. ANY decent business goes out of their way to please the customer. Replacing the items was the appropriate thing to do, but being gracious, decent and professional clearly is not an option for this bakery. As a former professional chef, food writer, restaurant critic, and cookbook author, I'm acutely aware of high quality food and good customer service. I try bakeries all over the Bay Area. No where is there a Cherry Pie like the one that is made at Sweet Adeline Bakeshop! It is completely off the charts. It is seasonal and rare to get one, which pains me. They use sour cherries which keep thier form, and the cherry juices carmelize into a bit of a crunch at the edges of the crust. Just from my one brief visit here, I think this place manages that precarious balance pretty well simply because no one would turn down a quality pecan cinnamon bun or a stellar ricotta cheese galette. I really wish this bakery were in San Francisco. Then I would go daily or weekly. I finally made the trip, and it's a short walk from Ashby BART. On a corner, with large windows, and 2 tables, this cute bakeshop has sweets and savory baked goods, plus sandwiches for lunch, on their house-made focaccia. It was a rainy day, and when I entered a few people were sharing desserts, and two were standing at the coffee station while eating cake, since the other table was occupied. I am impressed by the wide variety and amount of offerings in a small bakery. The counter person was quite nice and informative. I visited for their pie, since a farmer at the farmer's market raves about their chocolate cream and lemon meringue pies. I ordered lemon meringue for here and chocolate cream to go. Both crusts are light and flaky. The lemon was perfectly balanced - not too tart or sweet, and the meringue luscious. Chocolate cream pie has a generous amount of whipped cream on a tasty chocolate filling. Both pies are delicious! I will return to try their other baked goods, and invite you to make the trip no matter how near or far. read more

I love this place it's a real neighborhood place there chocolate mouse pie is awesome I have been coming to this place for years.

After frantically running around the sewage tunnels all night, I somehow ended up on King and 63rd this morning so I thought why not get myself some pastries. I scurry in and don't hesitate to order the vegan focaccia (eggplant, kale, and leek), ham and gruyere (classic combo) turnover, and the new cake flavor - strawberries and cream. And damn, they were all fire. The vegan focaccia had a very nice expected soft texture with caramelized roasted eggplant, charred leek, and crunchy kale chips all sitting nicely on top. That deep char flavor was def there. Ham and Gruyere Turnover was a hitter as well. Make sure you have some baby wipes because that shit was greasy as hell - but that's to be expected when you melt cheese, ham, and buttery flaky dough into one component. Just make sure to not touch your steering wheel after without a wet wipe. The Strawberries and Cream cake slice was well-balanced and tasted very fresh with a nice savory cream cheese flavor. You don't taste any artificiality here. I love that it wasn't too sweet, which is a pet peeve of mine. I can eat a bucket of this cake but limited myself to just this one slice. I appreciate the efforts made in making the pastries, the cute display, and fresh air, especially after being hours in the sewer. Though, I do appreciate both worlds and scurried back to the manhole where I was most familiar. I'll be back for more. read more

Came by last November to pick up a birthday cake for my girlfriend after my usual go-to cake shop 85°C went out of business. The shop was empty save for the employees working behind the counter and one customer being rung at the counter. While I was waiting to be helped, I caught sight of a dazzling multicolored confetti cake ($35 if I remember correctly) sitting right in the middle of the display case. When I was asked what I'd like that day, I pointed straight at that cake and said I'd be taking that one home today. The friendly folk at Sweet Adeline Bakeshop got it out for me and boxed it up. I asked for birthday candles (less than $1 if I remember correctly) and they added it into my order at small surcharge. My girlfriend, friends, and I had a great time eating the vanilla-flavored cake. I believe everyone was as impressed by the number of sprinkles on the cake as I was. All in all, it's a great local shop that I'm glad I've gotten acquainted with. I'll be back whenever I need any baked goods! read more

I was in town again for another party and ordered the 1/2 sheet summer cake. The cake was decoration was simple, yet elegant. And again, the cake was a big hit with our guests. Everyone loved it and I got a lot of compliments and questions of where I got the cake from. One thing to note, since the frosting is somewhat stiff and very flat, my 1/2 sheet cake had a massive crack that ran straight across the frosting on the top of cake by the time I got home with it. Luckily, I was able to disguise the crack by applying pressure underneath the cake platter on opposite corners of the cake. Phew, close call!! Anyway, thanks again for an amazing cake! read more

The bottom crust was soggy and raw, not what I would expect from a bakery of this caliber (they should know they need to blind bake crusts for custard pies). Never a bad experience at this bakery. I once got a birthday for my mom and she loved it! Recently I came in because I was craving a light snack. I was lucky enough to find that they had a two for one deal 30 minutes before closing! Such a steal! I got 2 onion and chive scones for $3.75! They tasted great even though they've been around since the early morning. The only downer was that the farmer's market was that day so parking was unavailable up front. If you live close by then that wouldn't be an issue but if you prefer to find parking conveniently, try coming on a day other than a Tuesday. Really good bake shop if you are a diabetic or like some sweet treats that are not actually that sweet. First date place, well it's kind of cool inside, but the rows of tents across the street makes it not so. Almost savory cupcakes, cakes, pastries, and cookies. I thought the stout cupcake was good but be prepared for the icing on top that looked like classic cream cheese frosting, but has very little sugar making it more savory. The accolades abound, really pretty much everything here is amazing but for gougeres (which I find to be the only boring thing on their menu) and quiches (which lean cream heavy which some people do not like). We ordered their confetti cake for someone's birthday. Unfortunately, the cake was bone dry and rock hard. When cutting into a slice, the layers of cake and cream just came apart because they were all so dry. The whole thing felt as if someone had left it out for a while and let it get stale or something, like we'd been given a days-old display cake instead of something made fresh. This cake was in no way fresh, moist, etc. Also, the flavors were nothing to write home about; the strawberry jam/cream cheese layers tasted quite bland. Visually the cake was great, and the writing we requested on the top was perfect. But in terms of texture and flavor, this cake was extremely disappointing. Either way I was so turned off I don't think I'll try another restaurant in Berkeley! The piece of the bread I had was dry, crusty and overbearing with chocolate chips. Costco banana bread tastes better. Everything was just way too sweet. Don't be fooled by Yelp reviews, if you want a good bakery avoid this place. Vons grocery store sells better goodies! Pandemic life saver! Whenever I'm having a bad day or need some sweets, I head over to Sweet Adeline. First, their baked goods are on point! They taste like sweets from a real bakery. No shade to Starter, Firebrand, Farleys or even Arizmendi (which doesn't have the best sweets selection - way more savory and a lot of scones, but no cake) but sometimes that stuff doesn't taste like it's fresh or was baked that day. S.A.'s baked goods always taste like someone baked them that day and stored them correctly. Nothing is stale, dry or taste like it could be store bought. Second, their selection of pies are always seasonal and they like to experiment with different fruit combinations. They always have items with fruit that I like (like apples, strawberries and blueberries) that taste really good and are never too sweet. They have even made fruits that I don't care for (like pear) taste good. They have unique options (which I can't spell correctly!) that I've never seen at other bakeries. Finally, they always have the fan favorites (or at least my fan favorites!). They have slices of a colorful confetti cake with a tangy (maybe cream cheese?) icing that is amazing. It's funfetti for adults! They also have a bad *ss carrot cake cupcake. Again, great icing. I know that if I'm not digging the seasonal items, pie selection or anything else, I can always grab the confetti cake and the carrot cake cupcakes (I order 2 of each and pretend I'm getting the extra for a friend...except there is no friend, it's just me!!!) Only downside is their hours are limited (Wed-Sun until 3pm). Get there early if you want the best selection, I've gone right before close and they've been sold out of some of their popular items. Sweet Adeline did an incredible job on our wedding cake. Jen was a pleasure to work with and makes delicious cakes! We loved the summer cake, which is filled with fresh strawberries in spring. The filling is so light and airy, and complements the white cake so well. The buttercream is not overly sweet, which I appreciate. In a wedding cake vendor, we were looking for taste, the ability to execute our vision, and affordability. We found all three in Sweet Adeline Bakeshop. They got creative in figuring out how to execute my vision for the cake (a tall and skinny 3-tier cake, but with buttercream instead of fondant); they had that refreshing summer cake flavor; and they were able to do my cake for less than other places we went to with less tasty cakes! They were responsive and reliable from the start. We are so happy we found this bakeshop and went with them. Everyone at our wedding loved the cake! Let me start by saying that if you are a very patient person, you can disregard this review and take my word that I recommend them! :) If you aren't very patient, keep reading. The food here is great, but be aware that if you order days in advance you still have to wait in the long line to pick up your item. I ordered a pie for Pi day and had I known that I'd have to wait over 30 min for a pre-ordered, pre-paid item, I would not have ordered from here. Most businesses that I order from in advance have a pick up process that is quick and easy by using separate lines. When I ordered from here on another holiday (Thanksgiving, which I know is a busier day) it was quick and easy to pick up my pie as they had separate lines and each customer took about 10 seconds to give them their name and walk off with their orders. I didn't realize that that was a special occurrence and not a regular process of theirs. So, today's experience, when the staff told me that I had to get in back of the 50+ person line to retrieve my item, was a frustrating surprise. One way to prevent this frustration would be to add a clear warning, when one orders online, that says something like "if you order in advance you still have to wait in the regular line with everyone else" or "expect to wait a while as lines aren't separate". If I had expected this and had been made aware of it in advance, I would have been less frustrated when I arrived and I would have factored in more time for my visit. But, since I expected the process to be similar to the last time that I picked up a pie, and similar to what I've experienced at most businesses (which is separate lines for pre orders and an efficient pick up system), it created room for frustration. If you want a quick and easy pick up process, this is probably not the place for you, except perhaps on non-holidays or weekdays? But, if you don't mind waiting a long time to pick up your pre-paid item, then it's worth it. The food is great! However, knowing that it can take a long while to pick my order, and that they don't have separate lines, does deter me from ordering here again, since I don't always have that kind of patience. I do hope they come up with a better system for advanced and pre-paid orders, because I would like to support them! read more
