I used to get carrot cakes from Katrina Rozelle. It closed so I tried SA. The carrot cake here is better! Wish I had found this gem earlier! The carrot cake is not overly sweet and has a delicious cream cheese frosting. It's the best carrot cake I've ever had! I have tried the pave cake which I don't recommend because it is very dry. I have also tried the American chocolate cake which would be better without the extra layer of frosting. I prefer more cake and less frosting. read more

This little bakery has great heart. The folks who work here are friendly and unpretentious, and all of their baked goods are solid. I love the apple turnover - toasty, flakey and, despite the shop's name, not TOO sweet, the perfect balance of fresh fruit and buttery goodness. Sweet Adeline's is also quite dog friendly - lot of outdoor seating, a water dish outside the doorway, and even homemade dog treats inside if you want to pamper your pooch with his own pastry. I'd suggest passing on the coffee, but feel free to pack a book or computer for an extended stay in this pleasant spot. read more

A quick break from work to get some sweets. Heard about this place from coworkers and thought to give it a try. I got the Chocolate Creme Pie. Have to say that I was impressed. At first it looked like too much whip cream, but it ended balancing perfectly with the dense chocolate creme. The crust was crispy which is the way all pie crust should be! The big problem with this place is the service. The person taking orders was also the cashier, which made the line go super slow because she had to get each customer's pastry then ring them up. Great cake and good service. Ordered a 9" Summer Cake for my daughter's 2nd Birthday. Both the design and flavor were outstanding. Perfect pink buttercream rosettes, with confetti sprinkles and lovely piped message. Bakers were gracious with my fussy requests! This bakery clearly doesn't need any more reviews, does it? Well, I'm doing it anyway because my experience was SO good--as were the three cakes/four flavors I got from them. I recently got married, and I was dreading the idea of cake tasting (was in the midst of quitting sugar, plus I work all the time--where's the time?) and cake research and frankly just even serving cake at all. I was already spending a fortune on catering and my caterer was providing 10 other things to eat, all delicious. Who would even have room for cake? The family pressure was ON, and I read (here on Yelp) that the cakes here were reasonably priced and delicious. So I went for it. I filled out the online form and then had a call with Jen. The call helped me clarify size and design, and due to the vast number of votes going on, there was disagreement on flavor. Husband wanted choc-raspberry, mom wanted summer, and I wanted lemon. So I ended up doing top two tiers summer and bottom tier choc-raspberry, and since the price was so incredibly reasonable, I got the lemon for my rehearsal dinner. Then we could try three flavors! Also got the pistachio-rose-cardamom cake for gluten free. Jen was very clear what they wanted/needed for best presentation (I bring flowers they can place on it, type of cake platter needed, etc.), and that helped too. I think just in the nick of time we had the platters figured out with the caterer. And I packed succulents for the cake top since I did succulent table arrangements. I can't remember the price in the end, but I got a lemon cake for pickup and a GF cake and 3-tier wedding cake for delivery all for less than $600. My co-worker and I bought the Boston Cream pie cake for our boss's birthday. Not what you would expect. From the outside, it looks heavy and dense. The frosting was a nice thick chocolate ganache. But once the cake is revealed, it is a airy white layered cake with a sweet, light cream filling. Looks are deceiving as this cake holds true to this contradiction. But one true fact still holds true, it is not good for you. With each bite, I told myself to "Stop! You've had enough!", as I am on a detox and shouldn't eat sugar. But I couldn't help myself and kept on eating until it was all gone. It's true that sugar is a drug. That once you start, you cannot stop, and you want more of it. I asked one of the male servers for his recommendation and he was really helpful, informing me about which is their most popular and what he personally likes. I didn't really feel like chocolate, so I just went with a meringue pie for $4. Portions was huge!!! I swear the nice lady that chopped up my pie gave me like 1/4 of the pie! The pie was pretty good, but I found it weird that the lemon part was a bit powdery.. And I probably should have had an actual meal before this pie, because half way I started feeling sick from all the sugar. I would probably give the pie a 4 star. I also got a latte, but it tasted more like a cappuccino instead... Way too foamy. (~$4) It's not too bad, but it's not my thing. The coffee they use is also just average. Having driven by this place at least 4,396 times before, I had the perfect opportunity to stop in this past weekend. I was in a rush to a dinner party and needed a good cake, pie, or baked good to take with me. My previous go-to, La Farine, was just a tad bit too far given my time crunch. The employee that served me provided phenomenal suggestions. She did a wonderful job describing everything available and, to be honest, I wanted to take it all with me. I ended up with a lemon meringue pie that was the hit of the party! The meringue was light and fluffy, with a dusting of what seemed like sugar on top. The lemon curd was not too tart, not too sweet, but just right. The crust was hearty and tasty. The whole pie held together very well when sliced. For $22, it was a solid value and a 10/10 in tastiness. As for the other aspects of the bakery, the line was short and parking free and plentiful. A huge blessing in Berkeley. I ordered a cheesecake for a coworkers birthday and it was only 30$ and about 50 lbs! (Not really) I expected it to just be plain cheesecake but it was lemon curd with a nice chocolate cookie crust. It was a huge hit! The staff is super friendly and the shop is absolutely the cutest place! I want to get all of my cakes here now. They even wrote a happy birthday message for no extra charge. So my sweet tooth and I felt that it was imperative that we went to check this out for ourselves. While there I decided to try a bunch of other cookies and sweets as well... why not right? exactly. The Chocolate chip cookie was good.. but it wasn't mind blowing to my standards to where it would go on MY personal "Forbes list" but the Pecan praline cookie was def my fave out of the 5-6 different kinds of cookies that were in the box. Also tried the tea cakes and the red velvet cupcakes. Tea cakes = yay... cupcakes = nay. Red Velvet is my all time favorite and this just didn't make the cut. I frequent this place about once a week to buy goods for the workplace. The baked goods are always fresh and there is always a different variety everyday. HOWEVER, customer service can be rude and rushed at times (no smiles, look of annoyance, etc) but it is understanding because there is usually a line out the door in the mornings. I originally was prompted to leave 4 stars but I found a caterpillar in my Turkey sandwich yesterday that was def. not appetizing. I was so hungry! It was included with the greens that were in my sandwich. The poor thing was curled up and dying. One of the cutest bakeries I have seen! It's located in a small shopping complex in Berkeley. My mom and I were up early and wanted to find a good place for some quick breakfast options, and I couldn't help but see that Sweet Adeline was a consistent hit amongst East Bay residents. Naturally, we had to check this place out. The complex has private parking so, I don't think it would ever pose too much of a problem, but maybe during busier hours, you may have to drive a little bit to get parking. The interior of the bakery is quaint; it doesn't have too much seating, but it is totally compensated by their abundance of delicious pastries! I highly recommend their scones, cakes, and cookies in particular! I made a random stop here with my family one day, and I found it to be a little cute bakery. All the items are there for you to take a look at, and the workers there are really nice. My family and I tried a few different things. We tried both types of foccacia some type of ginger cookie, and a sort of apple cake. All of which was pretty good. What I really liked is that none of the items were overly sweet. However, some items were a little bit dry, or a little too dense. I used to come here all the time for breakfast and it really is a fantastic bakery that isnt going anywhere anytime soon judging by the business they do and the rave reviews, so I don't feel too guilty leaving this rating for a business I actually respect. But the situation with the people outside asking for money became too much after a while. They are nice people and it's refreshing to see a business that actually treats its locals with dignity. Theres just gotta be some kind of medium between soulless gentrification and letting panhandlers post shop outside your door like they're running a toll booth. Theres more creative ways of giving back to the community instead of indirectly levying charity costs on your customers that go to the same two people every day. And Ive helped out plenty of times but as a student I just cant all the time, and when I turn them down they get visibly annoyed and it makes the whole trip a drag when it shouldnt be. Overall not an ideal environment for an otherwise amazing cafe, so unfortunately I've stopped coming. The silver lining is I've learned to make my own quiche. read more
