Food is pretty good. Service was eh. My husband and I wanted to try this place for our wedding but the owner was really condenscending towards us. I think it was due to our budget that might've made him talked to us the way he did. We met up and discuss about our wedding food catering plans. Surprisingly he ordered food for us to try not knowing we were going to eat/taste test for free but it was a nice surprise. I find it funny because it felt like he was trying to geared us towards seafood but I don't like seafood so there was no way we were going to add that into our wedding menu. Once that was expressed, he kept mentioning that with our budget it may cost more and that's only with food and not even linen and other servicing options included. I felt like it was already a dead end, no point of moving forward with anymore details. He was kind of rude because he made a comment saying "most people don't mind paying whatever price". I'm sitting there thinking, it's a wedding I'm planning, there's obviously budgeting involved and I'm not made of a million bucks to pay whatever price I want/can. So with that, I already felt the vibe like "we're not good enough" for his business. It's too bad because we did like the food but after our meeting, he never once reach out to us to see if we were still interested. It's ok, we passed because we did not want to work with anyone like that. This food is good, but an owner like that who gives you a vibe like you can't afford doesn't deserve our money. Oh my goodness! The Yelp rating had me skeptical but I was in the area for work and the options for healthy were limited so I begrudgingly went in. I am so extremely glad I did! The restaurant is clean, very intimate and inviting. I have only gone for lunch but every time I entered, the restaurant was packed. I always order my food to go and I appreciate the high end plastic containers they used which kept my food warm and I didn't have to worry about spills. The to go containers were also convenient as I was able to use the same container for reheating my left overs later. I was very happy with my selection. The portions were perfect the amount of vegetable and meat where ample and the flavor was awesome! I literally went to Sweet Basil every time I was in this area for work which was a total of three times. My favorite dish was the Shiitake Mushroom Stir Fried (various mushrooms and veggies in a yummy brown sauce), I would order this with extra vegetables (Broccoli & extra pea pods). I also alternated between beef and chicken. I wish I could provide you reviews of more food choices but this dish was so good I ordered it all three times. FYI, for your first time, start with level 1 spicy. The first time I ordered level 3 (out of 5) and if it had not been for the rice diluting the heat, I would not have been able to eat it - my eyes were watering due to the spice and I love heat!!! Surprised when we came there was a lunch rush for this popular lunch buffet. It's been about 20 minutes since the ONE server has visited our table. Correct me if I'm wrong (coming from someone who has worked in the restaurant industry many times before), but if the place is known to have a lunch rush (again, surprisingly), shouldn't there be more than one server? I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious the food was. I ordered the tropical fried rice with seafood; pricier than I expected, but well worth the money. I ordered the food to go, and their serving size was really good. They packed so much of it in the container that I could only finish half of it. Which is great, because I love leftovers. Their pho selection is small. There's only two choices; saigon and seafood. So my friend ended up getting the seafood pho which she enjoyed. I tried a bit of it, and it really does live up to its name lol they put a lot of basil in it. It does taste good though. All in all I was pleasantly surprised. I would definitely come back again to try their other items. Also another thing that I'm strangely appreciative of is the packaging and containers. They're strong and sturdy. When you order the pho to go, they put the items in separate containers so there's less chance of spillage. They're also very hearty with the amount of broth they give you. read more

Sweet basil has a great location for those who work at Target HQ. I come here at least once a month because their Pad Thai is to DIE FOR!! I can safely say that their pad Thai is the best I've ever had. If you're a sweet basil newb, you also need to give their cream cheese rolls a try because they're so dang cute and yummy. There is absolutely no reason this place should be empty as often as it is. When you order spicy food here, you can get it on a scale from 1 (low) - 5 (high). I ordered lo mein, spicy rating of 2. I thought my mouth was on fire. Granted, I may be considered a spicy food wimp. My boyfriend enjoys when his nose runs and eyes water. I don't think that's tasty. The lunch special Monday - Friday is basically amazing. Nine options of your general "Chinese food takeout" with steamed or fried rice, and either three cream cheese rolls or an egg roll... for $6.50. The only downside: Don't eat here, because it's tiny and I don't think there's a public restroom. Oh, another downside: It's in Brooklyn Park near 610 (north north north). This isn't a place I'm going to drive to from... most areas in the city. If I lived close, I'd be a frequent customer. read more

I've stopped in at Sweet Basil a few times for lunch and have never been totally satisfied with my meal. The food is , meh OK and that's about it. I don't know what it is, but always takes longer than it should to dine here. I usually stick with sweet and sour chicken and it's consistent but not necessarily in a good way. They used to have pretty good cream cheese puffs but they've been replaced with tiny little cream cheese puff shooters or something, literally the size of a cigarette rolled up and definitely frozen. I think they should rename the place Sour Basil. Or at least Sweet and Sour Basil. I'm used to sweet sauces at Asian restaurants restaurants. There really wasn't anything sweet in either dish that I had. I had the chicken wings for an appetizer. The wings were fried to a crisp and dark color, kind of like double fried Korean wings. But these were tougher. They tasted like they looked... Very well done. The sauce was different than anything I've had before. Just didn't seem to blend well. Way too much fish sauce in it and no sweetness or spice to it at all. I had mock doc Pad Thai as my main dish. Ordered it three stars spice and it had a really good spice to it. But something was off in the flavor. I've had mock duck and pad Thai in so many different places I can't count, but I've never had pad Thai that tasted like this. It had a sour taste to it. I wanted to like it, but I never really got there. As for the service, the kids running the service were really nice. But here's a couple of tips; don't bring the main dish out 30 seconds after you bring the appetizer. And don't take someone's main dish and drop it down in front of somebody else at a different table before you figure out you made your mistake and pick it up and bring it back over to the person whom it was cooked for. I'll compare this place to another place very close to it. MT noodles. The plates here are much fancier, and they can make art out of a carrot like no one I've ever seen. But I will take the food at MT noodles over the food here any day. I'd give the place 2 1/2 stars but as you know, half's don't work in yelp. My hubby and I are right down the street from Sweet Basil, and as Thai/Vietnamese food fans we order from this place to pick up for dinner probably once a week for the last year. Some of my favorites are the pad thai with tofu, cream cheese rolls, Sweet Basil noodles. The cream cheese rolls I especially love - usually when you get these at other Asian places they are huge triangles of wanton with a hard to reach little chunk of cream cheese in the middle. These are truly "rolls" in that it's like a little cylinder of cream cheese rolled in a light flaky crust. Delicious and a must have for cream cheese wanton lovers. I've had the pho a few times but honestly for me it's pretty meh. Not bad at all, but for me pho is all about the flavorfulness of the broth and theirs just isn't up to snuff with some others I've had. We've also had the calamari a few times and it's quite good! The green papaya salad we ordered once as take out. It was SO spicy I couldn't eat more than the first bite, and even my hot-loving hubby couldn't take it. We make our own papaya salads now so unlikely that we'll be ordering that again, whew! The interior of the restaurant is nice and well kept. It's never very busy, I'm guessing most of their guests are repeat customers like us who get take-out. The staff is always very nice. read more

I can honestly say that this place has the best Pad Thai in all of Minnesota. I have been to every single Thai restaurant in and out of the cities, and nothing comes close to this place. The service is great. The owners make you feel welcome and comfortable. They take time to get to know their customers and their usual orders, which is a little hard to find nowadays. The only downside is their location. The food is worth it though. Get out to Brooklyn Park and have some Pad Thai. And for God's sake, get it spicy! Step out of your comfort zone. Once i figured out from the menu and people that it's going to be the thai/laos region, sticking to those dishes seemed to work well. A super affordable and tasty Thai option in bp! The wings were advertised to be spiced with a variety of spices but they were pretty naked. The chili sauce that accompanied them was needed. They were still crispy and moist which was nice. We got pad Thai and it was delicious! I forgot to order it extra saucy but it came that way anyway. In addition, we got Kao Poon which is a curry noodle soup with rice noodles, ground chicken, cabbage, and carrots. The soup was tasty and will be perfect for cold winter nights.
