Pizza Margherita is a classic pizza simply prepared with mozzarella, tomato sauce, olive oil and fresh basil. It is delicious simplicity. Usually....but not here. Ironically, Sweet Basil's had NO basil. It was cooked on the outside but soggy crust in the middle and topped with Horrible, cooked mushy tomatoes under a puny layer of plastic mozzarella and sprinkled with DRIED herbs. Yuck. With a name like Sweet Basil you would think you could spring for the legit rendition of a classic pizza. Quality counts. I give three stars because the cashier was nice. read more

Smelled great as we walked by so we stopped in for dinner. We ordered a Stromboli. It was good but couple of suggestion. When we asked for sausage as one of the ingredients we were told that because their sausage is fresh they can't put it in the Stromboli. Suggestion, have some cooked up for the Stromboli. Both my wife and I had slices and salad, crisp, wide handled, thin crusted pizza with a solid salad bowl! Neat little kids corner, seating at the windows, and interesting process. You order, receive your order scribbled on paper, are directed to step in line, to hand over your note as well as complete payment, then seat yourself, after taking a number. Let me preface this by saying that I am a food snob AND I literally grew up in the restaurant industry so my standards are different than many. Firstly, upon entering I was not greeted nor given any instruction. Over the course of the meal this resulted in my going to the counter to ask questions three times. Once for info on ordering, one for where to get water, and one for info on purchasing a beverage. Also, had I not at this time deduced that paying was supposed to happen at time of ordering, there could have been a fourth inquiry, or I could have chosen to leave without paying if so inclined which would have cost this establishment over $30. ALL OF THIS could have been avoided by the person closest to the door greeting is and asking if it was our first visit, or explaining it to us when we realized we were taking orders from him. Secondly, there are five staff members and while it is steady business at 6:30pm on a Monday it isn't so busy that someone couldn't come by and wipe down the 3of 5 empty tables that needed cleaned up. An empty salad bowl sat at the counter for the hour and a half we were here. Minus one and a half stars for inattentive staff getting by on the bare minimum. The second half of a star goes for my gluten free pizza crust. This is where my food Snobbish nature comes through. It's 2017 and I have come to expect a restaurant dedicated to carbs and featuring a gluten free option to do a little better than frozen, manufactured, industrial crust. I LONG TO BE WOWED WITH AN UPGRADE FROM CARDBOARD. Seriously. It isn't hard to do these days. Ask Portland. Walla Walla is a college town. You can afford to be progressive. All that said, I want to end on a high note, as overall I think this place has a good thing going. 1) My gluten imbibing hubster LOVED his calzone. It had a nice fluffy dough, so this is your best bet if thin crust pizza isn't your jam. 2) Even though my GF crust made me yawn, the toppings and seasoning was quite lovely and well thought out. The toppings were evenly distributed so I never felt like I had a lame slice to ignore as long as possible and it was so delicious that I ate more than I wanted. That amounts to something! The wine (cabernet) was drinkable but not exciting. A big bonus for the kids area, which gave our son a much needed social hour and the tired, travel weary parents a much needed break. I think Sweet Basil CAN EASILY be a five star establishment if management steps in and teaches these kids the basics of customer service. And if they throw more than an obligatory bone at the gluten free crowd they can cement themselves as the best place in town for pizza, known even to those who live in more urban areas. They remind me of a place that's earned a reputation and are coasting on the hard work of their founders, but not keeping closer tabs on current needs and employee training. read more

Definitely THE place in town to get yourself some pizza when the craving hits. Love that they switch up the type of slices they serve each day, my favorites are the Primavera, pesto, and potato slices. Their calzones are also quite delicious, but take about 20 minutes. Side salads that you might order in attempts to be healthy here (guilty of this too) aren't​ really all that good, so I recommend skipping them. Sweet Basil is across from Coffee Perk just off Main St. There's a parking lot in the back of the Macy's plaza where you can park for free to go to Sweet Basil's in case the street parking is all full. A large oven/counter situation greets you when you walk in. Order at the counter, either precooked slices or from a menu board on the back wall, and then bring your little slip of paper over to the cashier where you can also choose a drink (beer, wine, soda, free water is in the fridge) if you so desire. If you're dining in you then bring your number to whatever table you want and then wait for the pizza to be brought to you. I think my favorite pizza was the pesto one, but I was also a fan of the BBQ Chicken and the pepperoni. The pizza's are all think crust, and the salads are a good size if you want veggies. If you're in the mood for a calzone, they're massive but pretty doughy. I wanted mine to be predominantly cheesy, just like my Yelp reviews.Though they have limited beer options I enjoyed the IPA and lagers that were on tap. Utensils, napkins, and cups can be found at a station near the trash cans, and the seating area is usually not crowded. I was super-hungry when we made it here. So, we ordered a full-sized Italino pizza. I was hungry though, so I ended up picking up a slice of the Margherita (is that spelling right? It's not like the drink, it's like the pizza!). I love these types of pizzerias, the joint is local, the pizza is good, and I feel like Buggin' Out from Do The Right Thing (a cookie to anyone who knows what I'm talkin' about here?!) as I pile on the mozzarella! They served Ice Harbor brews (IPA, Summer Lager, and Stout---latter was labeled Basil's Brew on the tap handle). I went for an IPA, of course. A solid 4.5 is what I'd Yelp. Pizza was pretty good. What really killed me though was the "pitcher" of beer that we poured into pint glasses and discovered it was LESS then 3 pints. Yes, 3 pints. This is a really good Pizzeria!! The space itself is decorated with various music memorabilia which is nice with the Gentlemen of the Road stop over is this weekend. Local beer on tap which automatically earns a star in itself. The Burton IPA was awesome, the Pilsener was also pretty good. As far as the pizza goes, I tried the Chicken Pesto (absolutely delicious), Italiano (hearty and very tasty), and the BBQ (better than most BBQ). Parking can sometimes be a minor challenge but has never deterred us from going there. Just might have to circle the block a couple times and be willing to walk. The dining area is clean and open. Mix of regular tables & then the higher bar stool type ones. A kids area. Flat screen tv. Nothing to write home about. Not bad. Not great. But satisfactory. It's a "bus your own" place but they still deliver your meal. This sort of setup always confuses me a bit. You place your order at the counter. Move down the line and pay (and order your beverage). Take a number to your table. Meal is delivered. Bus your table when done. I think it's the 1/4 service 3/4 on your own thing that never sits right with me. Do you tip? Do you flag down for a refill or a side of ranch? Don't get me wrong, other restaurant models do this. I'm just not a fan. This place just feels like it should be full service but it's not. Which is not a make or break deal....I'm just saying. A word about that side of ranch though: pet peeve of mine---it should be complimentary. Nickel & dime-ing for a side of ranch is a bit irksome when I pay 99% of my meals & expenses on a credit card. I mean, really? Still, it's a great little place. We'll keep coming here when in Walla Walla and we are craving pizza. One more thing: anyone know the significance of the door handle to nowhere in the bathroom? I was having a lovely Saturday evening, and decided to top it off with a nice pizza. Sounds great, right? Wrong. I ordered my pizza which was supposed to be ready at 6:09 pm. I arrived around 6:05 and was told it wasn't quite ready yet but would be in 10 minutes. Perfectly fair, I was early! I took a walk around the block and returned in 10 minutes. I saw my pizza sitting on the warmer, as I could read the ticket. They were busy and I understand that. After waiting patiently to be acknowledged I kindly asked the woman behind the counter if I could have my pizza that had been sitting behind her for the last 10 minutes to which she rudely replied "he has a system". What system? Excuse me? I waited some more to uncover the mysteries of this "system". After another 5 minutes of staring at my pizza I asked again. She declined my request to hand me my pizza. A few minutes later, the man with the "system" picked up the pizza, didn't say a word and handed it to me after I requested it from him. He shoved the pizza at me. It was a fascinating system that might be beyond my depth of understanding, but it's pretty clear this place doesn't care about customer service. The pizza tasted good, but it wasn't cut so I had to do that myself at home. Hopefully if you try this place out you receive better customer service than I, or you understand the "system". read more

One Stromboli costs $8 and feeds two girls easy, probably would feed one hungry guy. Was just as good cold the next day. Could use more outdoor seating. You can park in front or in the back. If I'm in Walla Walla and want lunch, I will most likely come here every time (came here today and yesterday). Here's why: (Pizza by the slice) + (gourmet ingredients) + (free wifi) + (window seat with excellent people watching view of downtown) + (refrigerated glass water bottles) = $3.63. AWESOME! My only gripe is that I'm a fork and knife guy, which they provide... but on paper plates. I dislike wondering if I'm cutting through the pizza or the plate. Sweet Basil Pizzeria has been a Walla Walla fixture for about 11 years. Funky, eclectic decor, tasty thin crust pizza and generally helpful staff make it a good choice for a quick lunch or early dinner IMHO. My grandson, wife and I went there recently because Jax, who's 5, really likes their pepperoni pizza. They typically have eight or nine pizzas ready with tastes varying from pepperoni to chicken club (which has chicken, tomatoes and spinach) and pesto pizza with artichokes. You can often watch them throw the pizza dough and then bake it in their large pizza ovens. It always tastes very fresh. They also have a selection of salads. I chose a classic caprese while my wife tried their BBQ chicken salad. I've also had their calzones which, IMHO, is like a pizza baked in a roll. They're also pretty good. read more

My dining partner and I ordered the Pesto: garlic, mush, olives, artichoke hearts 21.99 I am not a fan of alot of crust, but the crust wasn't bad. my biggest complaint was that the topping were there, but pretty skimpy. Oh well, for $20. what can you expect? Minus 1 star for no delivery ( what can I say?) and minus 1 star for the waiter just got on my last nerve. My husband and I came here while we were in town for a wedding after we heard glowing reviews from people who went to school here. Honestly, we were very unimpressed. Maybe it was the fact that we came at 3pm, and the pizza wasn't fresh anymore, but it didn't even LOOK good in the display case. It looked like someone had pressed the pizza and toppings with a brick; the slices were flat and looked like they were about 6 hours old. Once they were warmed up in the oven, they did have a much better texture and taste than they looked like they'd have. I wouldn't come back here; I have a feeling the great reviews were more nostalgic than objective. read more
