This place is hidden in the shopping center. Happen to stumble upon during a drive and getting lost. I then left it on my to visit places. A few days ago, I decided to go eat there. I went around 17:00 hours (5:00 PM) and was greeted with an empty place but a friendly waiter. I was seated and noticed that the place mats were laminated. I considered this a great idea, if I were at home, not in a restaurant. I ordered the egg rolls and Penang curry at level five. The curry was great tasting but not as spicy as I thought five would be. Apparently it goes beyond 5 but I was ignorant of the mentioning. The egg rolls are advertised as spring rolls, which can be a little misleading. The food overall isn't something I would go crazy over but it is good enough. I've been here twice now and decided it's just ok. The atmosphere is lacking and not busy both times which I guess was an indicator. Overall I don't feel like I got what I thought I was ordering. The Spring egg rolls are just spring rolls cut into halves so you only get 2 mini ones even though you are told you get 4. The dishes are very spicy even though we asked for the mildest option so I can share with my young children. The dishes are watered down, super salty and full of red pepper flakes. The veggies are decent but also super salty. We had ordered Pad Thai, Soy Sauce noodles, kids sweet and sour and sweet basil noodles. The sweet basil did not taste sweet or have basil. Let's start off that this place is overpriced and the food is not up to par at all. Presentation sucks, flavor sucks, the only thing that tasted good was their tom kha soup. We ordered delivery and food was not what was expected to be. The crispy fried tilapia turned out to be a frozen fried filet, not the full fish. FOR 18.95.. what???? Ridiculous. Wings were over cooked, calamari just tasted like batter, and the fried rice was okay but definite not worth almost $15. I paid over $60 for less than mediocre food and small portions. To top it off girl on the phone said that there was nothing that they could do about it. I will not be returning here. Overpriced and a waste of money. If you're going to overcharge for food at least have it taste good. I've had several meals here and am absolutely crazy about this place. The prices are totally reasonable, the portions are very large, the decor is just so damn classy (white tablecloths!), and the service is impeccable. Oh, and the food is incredibly tasty. I had fears for a long time that it was in danger of closing because I never saw the amount of customers dining in the restaurant as I thought they deserved. Seriously, this place is crazy good. Really, this is gourmet quality Thai food. It might even be the best in town. The service is very good, fast, and they can advise beginners. They handled a large group I was in very well. Pricey, but not unreasonably so. Dressy, especially at dinner, matching the upscale decor and well-dressed wait staff. The hours are consistent: 7 Days a Week 11:00am - 9:30pm; so you can keep it in your head when they will be open. Park in the mall lot with all the shoppers. We haven't had thai in a year and this was the only area restaurant open. We gave it a go, but I wish we had been able to go somewhere else. When I try new places that have inconsistent reviews, I generally go for the standard dishes. I mean, if you can't get pad thai, soup, or rice right, there's no way I'm trying the seafood. So, we went really safe. Don't judge. The Pad Thai was okay. Not the worst I've had, but it wasn't any better than I've had out of a package. It needed more fresh ginger and citrus, as well as more bits of vegetables. Bean sprouts? Didn't see them. Fresh scallion? Very little. The peanuts on the side were crushed but weren't fresh...they were mushy. The fried rice was bland and had been cooked in too much water. It was mush. Honestly, I wouldn't have known it was fried rice ... looked like mush tossed in soy sauce. The chicken pieces were dried out and chewy, like they had been sitting in the oven for a couple of hours. Ugh. Pricey, small ish portions, sub-par food. The (caucasian?) waitress seemed to have attitude and you could totally tell she didn't want to be there or do anything. I don't expect a waiter/waitress to carry on a conversation with me and treat me like a queen, but the least she could do was try to smile a little bit and make her tone a little less unfriendly. Every time I asked for something she acted offended or something--a friend of mine ordered another side of rice and her reaction was like he was being an unreasonable picky dining patron. I ordered ~$16 duck and it tasted like they just poured soy sauce on leftover roast duck ordered from a Chinese BBQ. I have a suspicion that it's frozen/premade from another source because I asked if I could pay more for a slightly larger portion and they said I couldn't as it was "pre-portioned" out and they couldn't adjust the size of the dish. A lot of other casual dining Asian restaurants I've been to allow you to pay for a larger portion. (add $2 for extra shrimp for example). For at least 2 years I have wanted to try this place and during my Christmas shopping frenzy, I finally decided to just do it! I wish that I had kept postponing my visit. This was such a disappointment. My husband and I went around 3 p.m. on a Monday and there was one other couple dining. The very first thing I saw when we walked in was that the first two tables were dirty, with dishes piled up on both of them. These had obviously been sitting for some time because the food was crusty, wilted and brown looking. We were sat behind one of the dirty tables and once we sat down, I noticed at least 4 other tables piled high with dirty plates. Then, our waiter didn't even look like he worked there. He had on just a regular t-shirt, jeans and basic tennis shoes. I don't recall even seeing a name tag and he had no apron. The service was fast, but between refilling our drinks or whatever, our server was sitting in plain sight and chowing down on Papa John's pizza. Really? Get off your bum and clean those disgusting tables and eat your pizza later! The food was okay, but nothing I would ever return for. I got the crab cakes and they were tiny, flat and pretty much unflavored. They may have been overcooked too because they certainly were tough. My husband got the specialty suggested by our server and it was much better, but again, nothing spectacular. This place failed on so many levels. It's pricey for this area and while there is a definite nod at trying to be upscale (white plates, cloth napkins, etc.), it's just not able to pull this off. I admit that my experience here is limited by the fact that I fell madly in love with the first dish I had there. I have trouble talking myself into trying anything else because my heart belongs to the House Cashew Chicken and the super yummy, super crispy and tasty Crab Wontons. Friends who are more authentic in their Asian eating and do it more often than I do tell me that the fare is a mix of Chinese and Thai and that it really is as good as I think. When it comes to Thai places, it seems like the nicer the place is, the more Americanized the food appears. Now, I am no expert on Thai food, but the pad thai and the lunch specials (like the cashew chicken) reminded me of stuff that you would find at a typical Americanized Chinese food place (I'm thinking chop suey, sweet and sour sauces, kung pao chicken, etc.). Two other points I'd like to make. 1. Where was the spice? I can understand that their default is to offer their dishes without chili peppers and spices, but to not offer the option at all when someone is placing an order? 2. Duck is supposed to be their specialty, and the duck that I tried had great flavor, but why where they tough? Like how some people gravitate toward chop suey, some people will love Sweet Basil. Me? I think they are a bit overpriced for the quality of food they serve. My broccoli was yellow instead of green. My curry was like in a runny liquid it was pretty bland and also they totally skimped on some my potatoes, I mean I did not get ONE potato in my curry even though it was listed on the ingredients. I asked to see the menu again just to make sure I did not make a mistake, but I didn't the potato was listed as an ingredient and it was NOT there. When i told them about my potatoes not being in my curry the lady wanted to take the curry that I had already touched and take it in the back so she could add more potatoes, if I had a cold that would be a No-No (talk about cross contamination). The inside looks nice, but my goodness work on customer service skills, and for the love of the rest of the Dentonians practice the guidelines for cross contamination, I mean you don't know if I have a cold. read more

I went for the lunch right as lunch specials were ending at 2:30. The soup was very good, not sure what type it was but had a light chowder taste with chicken, the appetizer of the day was spring rolls (really egg rolls, but were not bad) and I had the Bangkok chicken. It was a nice mix of sweet and spicy and was nicely portioned, however I was disappointed that the only veggies with it were green bell pepper and mushroom. A few more vegetables would have made me happier, but that was my fault for not paying attention to the description. On a chauvinistic note; if you pay attention to the wait staff (if that's your thing), the waitresses were all pretty attractive. We were the only ones here when we came in on a Thursday night. We were in town for my sister's graduation the next day and decided to have dinner at a Thai restaurant. Even though my sister has lived in Denton for a few years, she had never been to this location. We almost thought the place was closed, but it wasn't. The food was alright. The fried rice was really sticky, compared to how loose fried rice usually is, but it had a lot of flavor, mainly garlic. I like garlic, so I thought it was good. My favorite Thai dish is pad see ew, which I first ordered at Madam Mam's in Austin. I've been trying several Thai restaurants and comparing the pad see ew dishes, but I haven't found one that is equally as good as Madam Mam's. The pad see ew here is not sweet at all. It tasted more like scrambled egg with a bit of soy sauce or oyster sauce, whatever they use. My parents ordered the spicy eggplant, but it was really soupy and rarely had any eggplant. It was mainly bell pepper. The waitress was nice, but I wouldn't recommend ordering pad see ew or spicy eggplant here. Maybe the other dishes are better. I've been going here since the beginning of 2015, which I don't know why I just then discovered this restaurant after living in the area for almost two years! I'm a hard person to please with pad Thai and very particular of the taste. But I have to say, sweet basil for the win! Their pad Thai is soooooooooo good. No joke. So much flavor in every bite! I order the tofu pad Thai. I know what you're thinking, how bland tofu can be. But sweet basil's pad Thai has so much flavor and the CORRECT flavor, that even with vegetables or tofu still tastes so delicious! It's not too sweet, or tangy or spicy, just right! I've also tried their tom yum soup with chicken, they have it for lunch specials and even a small appetizer like crab Rangoon. I'm drooling just thinking about it. I noticed that there hasn't been a review in awhile, so I hope this review shines some light on the recent service here if anyone is curious to see if Sweet Basil is still a great place to eat. I was going to drive a couple miles away from work to order from a different thai place but I thought I'd go ahead and give this place a try since I heard this place was one the best Thai places to eat in earlier years. At first I was a bit hesitant to try this place out because of the recent reviews, but I'm glad I did! I ordered both the beef pad thai and chicken pineapple fried rice lunch specials and it really hit the spot. They had my entire order correct. I am a bit disappointed because there wasn't any plasticware, napkins, or chopsticks included in the carry-out order but that can be an easy fix next time by simply requesting it. Service is okay AT TIMES. I have been here often, but only because their House Cashew Chicken is great!! (That's one earned them an extra star.) One of the servers was inappropriate enough to ask one of my friends out with a note...needless to say, the date did not go so well. i usually order the House Cashew Chicken. I like it "extra crispy" because sometimes, it comes out really soft and I can't really taste the caramelized skin as much. This dish is pretty bipolar. A couple of times, I have to ask for them to take it back and make it "extra crispy" again even though I have already told them to make it crispy when I order. Anyway, last night when we went, I asked for it to have it taken back again. The waiter came out and said that the cook mentioned the only way to have it made the way I wanted was if they throw this dish out and made an ENTIRELY new one - this was the first time this was mentioned, so I thought it was strange. I have usually ask for it to be made "extra crispy" about 5 times that I have been here and this was the first time they have mentioned that they would have to recook it. The waiter said that it would take an extra 3 - 5 minutes to make the new one, even though I asked that it was simply fine, I will just suck it up and eat the old dish. But he refused and said this was my special night! It did come out in 3 - 5 mins, as he said - which was strange as well, because we waited 45 minutes for our food!!!! FORTY-FIVE. I counted because I haven't eaten ALL day and was starving. I just found it fishy and they probably lied and tried to guilt me into giving more tips than usual or something like that. House Cashew Chicken is good; everything else is just OKAY for the price. They also don't give enough rice to feed one person...if you ask for extra rice, they will charge extra. Which is pretty dumb because most restaurants don't charge extra. I will probably come back for the House Cashew Chicken maybe...but after that particular incident, I probably won't...the service isn't that eyecatching either. read more

I've had pad kee now at 50+ different Thai restaurants. This was the second worst of all time for me. The dish had no discernible flavor. It was just steamed flat noodles stuck together, and steamed veggies with red pepper flakes on them. I got a level 4 it tasted like a level 0. Not only that but I ordered beef, maybe 6 small pieces of beef in the whole dish. If you like Thai food, move on. This place is a trash. We were looking for something quiet and yummy after shopping. Score!! It was in the same parking lot with T. J. Maxx! Our waiter has been there 3 years and everything he recommended was good. We had Cashew Chicken, Fried Fish with Lime and Spicy Slaw--absolutely the best. Fresh flavors and just enough spice to make your mouth sing. That's a "2" on the scale of "how spicy do you want it." They were also very accommodating for food allergy adjustments. For dessert, don't miss the Coconut Ice Cream--house made and deliciously sweet and chewy. The place could have been cleaner, thus only 3 stars. My husband actually flicked a bug off our table! Hope it didn't catapult into the next diner's meal! No one screamed. I have give this place two tries... The first was horrible. The second was the nail in the coffin. The first time we tried it, we tried the curry was was SO watery. It literally had the consistency of water and when you used it on your rice, it would just go to the bottom and coat not a grain of rice. The flavor was okay. The second time we tried it because I saw a sign saying they changed management but then I was assured by the waiter that all of the recipes were the same. Ick. I have to admit, the second time we tried the tornado shrimp spring rolls and they were good. I would come here just to pick up some spring rolls. The main entrees we got were so gross though. My gf ordered some sort of chicken with cashews and pineapple in it... It smelled bad and tasted bad. The sauce also had the same consistency of water and the smell reminded me of dog food. I ordered the pad Thai and it smelled and tasted rancid. It looks like they added tomato to it... So gross. It was unlike any pad Thai I had ever had. We ended up leaving and going to Whataburger. Ordered dessert to go, took 20 min to get mango sticky rice. The rice was undercooked and there was no sauce over it. It was an utter fail.
