Should you read nothing else, read this: Sweet Chive left me disgruntled, disappointed, and dissatisfied. I don't like to write negative reviews because this could have been one bad experience amidst many positive ones; however, I would urge you avoid this place unless you're in a "Jacob and Esau" situation, starving with nowhere to go save this place. I came here over the summer excited to try some Austin sushi (I'm from Dallas). Not only was the sushi abysmal, but the service was equally poor. I ordered a few raw rolls, a nigiri, and a fried roll; fried roll was the only roll of any quality. EVERY piece of raw fish tasted off. I can't describe it perfectly and I hope I never taste the flavor again. While likely safe to consume, it did not taste fresh. (It almost had a lemon or citrusy flavor I'm really not sure how to accurately describe it - all I know is that it shouldn't taste this way...especially nigiri). I'm no professional sushi critic, but I do consume quite a bit of sushi at a variety of places. The prices in tandem with the quality of sushi was purely treacherous. As for the service, our sushi came out at a decent time (considering there was only one sushi chef working), but it was sent to the wrong table. No big deal. Our server apologized, and it was remade. They did not offer any compensation, which was my biggest issue. Whether I've been at a fast food restaurant or the best Dallas has to offer, they make things right: Sweet Chive did not. When the check came, it was on an electronic card payment machine. I still tipped well because it was clear the staff was struggling and trying their hardest, but when the screen transitioned and asked to review their service, the waitress took the machine away and said, "Oh, you don't have to worry about that." I was very disgruntled with this last situation, because a business denying itself feedback from its customers is unfortunate. The food itself was very disappointing in quality. Great service...friendly/helpful staff. The food is amazing! I went there on a whim with a friend who was visiting from out of town. We has a feast and enjoyed every bit (took some home). I tried sweet chive when it first opened and never quite got around to writing a review till now. To be honest the food was A-okay. I think the issue with sweet chive was they chose a hip location and focused on hip Taiwanese food instead just really good comfort food. It also looks like their menu has sushi now? Not sure what's that all about. I ordered the minced pork with rice, the lions head meatball dish, the tea egg, and the pan fried and boiled pork dumplings. Oh I also got a pot of chrysanthemum tea. Price point is fair and okay for austin with 8-10 dollars per dish if you stick to the traditional taiwanese things. Food: I'm taiwanese so alittle biased. The ground pork with rice was sweet and good and I highly recommend it, if you're a fan of the pork belly version check out cocos cafe instead. The lions head meatball was my favorite but no longer on the menu. The dumplings were really small and made no impression whatsoever and the tea egg was literally just a tea egg but they charge 3 dollars for it lol. Imo ajitama tastes so much better but you can easily make tons of tea eggs at home and in Taiwan they're like so fricken cheap. Tbh I'm not sure if they'll survive with how competitive the market is. Came in very hungry on a Saturday lunch time and seems I'm the only paying customer inside, guess the competition is intense and the east side may not be a good place for an authentic Asian restaurant? Hope will get better! Kinda tried as much as I can. The appetizer sampler was a great idea and the portion is great for sampling, love it! Dumplings was done right and you can tell it's home made. Bon bon chicken got a healthier twist but still tastes good! The highlight is definitely at Lu Rou Fan! The taste is very authentic and the ratio of meat and rice is good - some restaurant has more rice and some has more meat - this one did it right! Only downside is the egg in the rice is cold not sure why. Service is friendly! I like it. Do not recommend this place at all because of high price and cutting corners. I think they may be just targeting tourists and do not expect repetitive customers. I ordered Lu Rou Fan and the picture of it on the menu shows there's an egg with it. But later when the dish came, it was without an egg. I asked the waiter why and he responded "oh the picture is for example only" and the dish does not come with an egg. Who would sell a Lu Rou Fan without an egg? If the dish does not come with an egg, then either don't include the egg in the picture or attach a text in the menu showing this point! The owner of it definitely cut corners. This new place is very sweet and authentic but it is definitely taiwanese home-style comfort cooking and not quite restaurant-quality especially for those that are not used to eating taiwanese food. The pork potstickers are open-ended, which is very taiwanese, but lacked some flavor and juiciness, and possibly heft. The handmade wrappers had a nice chew though some were burnt. If I ever go back I will try them boiled which might be better. Julie's Noodles still has the best open-ended potstickers in town, methinks. The beef noodle soup I think was made with spaghetti noodles which didn't have much chewy texture to them (a little overcooked), and were not seasoned so it made the overall dish rather bland (although, the broth itself was well-seasoned on its own). But typically you want a more robust broth base for this dish to hold up to that amount of noodles. The beef shank was nice and tender and had great flavor. It needs more pickled mustard greens though! Coco's is still probably the standard for taiwanese beef noodle soup in town. The Lion's Head meatball stew with glass noodles was a welcome sight to see, and reminded me of home, although I think a lot of westerners may not understand the beauty of this dish. I think in order for it to play well in a restaurant setting it needs to be a little over the top, either with SUPER tender meatballs (to where you struggle to understand how they did it), or outstanding broth which this version could be more flavorful. The glass noodles were a little overdone as well. Bon Bon Chicken had a nice clean and light twist to it without the usual heavy peanut /sesame sauce, and the wood ear mushrooms were a wonderful touch. The pork belly rice bowl was so tender and delicious, but I think could use more sauce to soak into the rice. The broccoli added to this dish seems a bit of an afterthought, and reminds you more of home-cooking than a restaurant dish. I think the pricing for this place is reflective of the ingredients they use (lots of locally sourced proteins) but it is a bit off putting for most people used to cheaper chinese food. It is really your only option for authentic Chinese food on the East side. Old Thousand, also on the East side, I think is better in flavor with restaurant-quality dishes, but it's more fusion style. I would come back to Sweet Chive if I were in the area and see how the menu changes, but I would still plan to head to north Austin for destination authentic Chinese. read more

The atmosphere is stark and not inviting. The back corner is some kind of trashed office space for the owners with 4 computer screens, trash and liquor bottles scattered on the desk and bench. The extensive menu is only on square so it was difficult to peruse and make a choice. Our waiter, who was very good, said the owners didn't want to print menus, although their drink menu is printed and laminated. The food was mediocre at best, pretty tasteless and forgettable. Parking is also hard so I'm not sure if this place is worth the drive. But in fairness, I would give it another shot in 6 months in hopes that they iron out their kinds by then. Everything is hand made by a lovely lady named Phoenix. Just wow, delicious! We ordered a little bit of everything. I added beef to the lo mein and it was truly fantastic. The flavors were on point, and everything was incredibly fresh. The egg rolls were well prepared and tasty and the wagyu beef dumplings were to die for, regarding the dumplings I would probably ditch the sauce it comes with, it was a little too tart in my opinion. I do have a few negative things to add sadly. The broth for the beef noodle soup was so salty I had to leave it and the chili wontons were unbearably tart. I am so impressed with this new Taiwanese restaurant. It is female owned, which I always love to support. The kitchen also has all Taiwanese staff, so you know it's authentic. I would post photos of all the cute decor but really, it's all about the food. The Lion's Head is delightful but I am newly obsessed with the Meatball Bites (pictured). The cucumber makes for a great crunch and it has a profound flavor and spiciness to it. I would also recommend the pan fried dumplings. Make sure you don't leave without trying the dessert. I just ate a coconut matcha pie and now I'm rolling on the ground because I'm so full- but it was worth it and I'll be back again! read more

Super cute aesthetic eatery in east Austin that serves Taiwanese food! It's not going to be like the street food you can get in Taiwan but it'll scratch the itch. We were recommended the chili wontons and the stuffed scallion pancakes. Both were pretty good and very flavorful. Good points: The pancakes had more meat than I expected inside and My husband liked dipping the pancakes in the chili oil from the wontons. Bad point: The beef noodle soup was pretty mid. Went here on a Sunday night for dinner with friends. Took them an hour and fifteen minutes to prepare my $17 appetizer sampler. Looking at the sampler it looks like all of it is prepared beforehand. Also ordered the dumplings. Some of my friend's orders took 35-40 mins. Not sure why it took that long to steam dumplings. I've eaten at places like Din Tai Fung which definitely makes everything from scratch and it doesn't take that long to make. I work in the industry as well and have forgotten/lost orders before. When that happens you apologize and fix the problem immediately. I inquired about my sampler after waiting 30 minutes. It shouldn't have taken an additional 45 minutes to knock that out. I wanted to like this place but was rather disappointed. I've been wanting to try this place and its had pretty good reviews so we decided to pick some food up for lunch and dinner one Sunday. We ordered online and drove to pick it up. It took slightly longer than we were expecting but no biggie. I ordered the spicy noodles with tofu (I'm vegetarian), my boyfriend ordered the regular spicy noodles, and we each got a sushi combo which we saved for dinner. We opened up the boxes to find that we got one order of the plain spicy noodles and one with chicken. I was pretty annoyed that my order was messed up but me and my boyfriend ended up switching since he eats meat. The flavors were alright, but the noodles were a bit soggy for my tastes. As for the sushi I guess I had too high of expectations for a Chinese restaurant. The rolls were pretty small and the California roll tasted like a crab salad made with kewpie mayo (it tasted kinda sweet) which was odd to me. I have no idea if maybe this was because I had put it in the fridge for a few hours but I don't think that was the problem. What a lovely place! Our server was so warm and friendly, and the food was all top notch. I loved everything I ordered here, and the biggest standouts were the fried eggplant and steamed Wagyu beef dumplings. I came in for lunch around 2pm on a Friday and it was very quiet and all the food arrived very quickly.
