Coming from a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge, we thought we'd stop by to get some sushi and bento boxes. We ended up finding this cute little restaurant. The waitress was very nice and could help anytime we needed. We ordered our food about 10 minutes in and then we got our food very quickly, unlike many sushi places I've been to in the East Bay. The prices look decent for Japanese food, but the reason is that they scarf you in every conceivable way. The stands on the bowls are high and the angle curves in sharply, so they don't have to put as much rice in. The fish is cut really thinly, so that they don't have to put as much fish in. And they charge you $1.50 for the tea. This is I think one of only two Japanese restaurants I've ever been in where they charged me for the tea. That's a practice from dim sum restaurants - which makes sense, except that in dim sum restaurants they give you a tea kettle, and you only get a cup here. I think I can fairly say this because I'm Chinese - this is the worst kind of Chinese behaviour. They nickel and dime you in every conceivable way. (The people running this place are Chinese). I made the mistake of coming here two years ago, saw the tea bill and said "my God, I'm never coming back here again." Two years later I'd forgotten. I politely sat through my lunch noticing all the ridiculous cheapness, and then saw the tea bill and almost hit myself on the head for forgetting. Second, their fish are not good, just medicre food, charging you the Marin County expensive price. That's why this place is never busy. I live in Sausalito and held off on coming here due to the poor reviews. However, when my husband and I ran out of other places to try, we gave it a shot. Not disappointed at all. The sushi rolls are pretty good and the prices are below average for the area. We've been here about 5 times now. It's a quiet place so we've never had trouble getting a table. One of our go-to Japanese restaurants in the county when we don't feel like driving to the city. Never disappoints - food is fresh and deliciously prepared. Love starting with an oyster shooter and salmon mango tartar, yummmie. Then on to beautiful, tasty rolls - love all of them - tonight was the SG, Monster, Caledonia and Spider. Tried the Goma-aw spinach salad - delicious. Portions are not big, prices are not cheap. Well worth it, we will be back again and again. I was torn whether to give this place three or two stars but I really wish I could do 2 and a half stars. The food was expensive and it lacked flavor and freshness for the amount we paid which is why I would give this place 2 stars. I ordered the gyoza, misoyaki butterfish, ramen, and tempura udon. The misoyaki butterfish didn't taste fresh and the fish had a very fishy taste. It also wasn't flaky like butterfish is supposed to be and the dish cost $21! The gyoza was okay but nothing special. The udon and the ramen both lacked flavor and tasted more like Chinese macaroni noodle soup! Here's why I would give them 3 stars. It's for their service. I have now been waiting in the restaurant for my order for an hour and 15 minutes. 5 people canceled their Doordash orders because they were taking too long. Just a block away from Sushi Ran, Sweet Ginger is quiet, serves great sushi and is VERY reasonable. No it isn't as trendy, but I don't care about trendy, I just want good sushi. So, we went and tried a sit-down meal at Sweet Ginger. Loved it as much as, if not more than, the delivery experience we had. We sat outside so I cannot speak for the interior ambiance (that will come in a future review). It was one of those rare balmy evenings in Sausalito. The few tables are across the street from the old library and park, lovely. As for the food, man these guys make good sushi! Great rice and incredibly fresh seafood. That eel in the Rock and Roll is amazing and we load up on the Sake (the salmon not the rice wine). There was a special of the day, Shrimp and Mango Roll, which was a wonderful combination. Simple and tasty. The service was friendly and quick. The place was not terribly busy which I am hoping was because it was a week night and I think they were just glad to have guests. It must be hard in this economic slum (read as: "Get out and eat! You don't have to spend much and it really helps support a lot of folks in the service industry!") Dessert was the green tea ice cream wrapped in sweet, little pancakes then flash-fried in tempura. I really liked it for clarity of tastes, if that makes sense. In a small town like Sausalito with only two Japanese restaurants, i guess I must say I didn't have high expectations, and I was right. My hubs and I tried this place out for dinner on Thursday for the first time in the entire year we've been living in Sausalito. When we went in, the restaurant was nearly empty, except for, literally, one customer... on a prime time around 7, 7:30pm. Hmmm. We were welcomed by the Chef behind the counter and the waiter, were seated promptly. Got our menus promptely, water and beer promptly... (which is nice but hey, there's no way they'd have problems with the aforementioned given how empty the place was, right.) Husband ordered Chicken Teriyaki dinner, and I ordered the Misoyaki Butterfish. I didn't order anything sushi or sashimi as after reading some reviews here on Yelp I was somewhat skeptical. Husband said his Chicken Teriyaki was "OK". He's married to me, a Japanese chick that cooks Japanese dishes all the time so I know he's pretty hard to please but still, he later on described his dinner as "microwave TV dinner like". The misoyaki butterfish was OK too. Good buttery fish (it's butter fish, duh), sweet marinade/glaze although I didn't taste much miso in it at all, and came with shichimi (Japanese version of chili powder, which actually is a mixture of seven spices) sprinkled on top. The glaze tasted pretty good but if I were the chef I would never pre-sprinkle shichimi on any Japanese food. Those things by default should be on the tables available for customers to use when they please. Personally the shichimi didn't do much to the fish, I would've had the same reaction without the spice. Aside from the main dish, our dinner came with a scoop (literally) of rice and miso soup. Miso soup used firm, cheap cubes of tofu that you can get nowadays in any supermarket, and somehow (and oddly) had undercooked slices of mushrooms (western/white kind, not shiitake or enoki or anything) floating on top. The soup itself was pretty flavourful compared to some other Japanese restaurants I've been to here in SF bay area but those mushrooms were quite puzzling to me. Also should've had more scallions and seaweed in the soup. Rice was literally a scoop. in a icecream scooper shape. Which really was not enough. Husband's dinner was around $14 for food, and mine was around $19. Honestly, I would value his dinner at $9 and mine around $12, so I am not happy at all with the price we paid. You can get a more satisfying meal at restaurants in SF J-town for 2/3 of the price here, and those restaurants in J-town ain't all that great either... but at least you get more for what you pay. But in Sausalito? well, it's still cheaper than eating at Sushi Ran... but you get what you pay for I suppose. Overall I felt that the food we ordered there were either seasoned with packaged/store bought sauce and/or were homemade yet non-Japanese interpretation of Japanese food. The waiter was talkative and he really was trying to flirt with us and the other guests that came in after us and at least was quite attentive, coming back to fill my husband's glass of beer until the bottle was empty, but the people that run this place are not Japanese (Chinese to be exact from what the waiter was saying to another customer). So, for Japanese food made by Chinese guys? I guess in that regard they were pretty good. So, Is it authentic Japanese? No. Was the food good? They were OK. Was the price fair? No. Would we go back there? Only if we are really really lazy to cook, don't feel like splurging at Sushi Ran, and are willing to settle for Japanese-ISH food. A couple of trivia though,... UnaJu on their menu says it's eel over sushi rice. SUSHI RICE? I really hope that's a type-o as UnaJu is NOT supposed to come with sushi rice. And FYI Spicey Peach Chicken and Garlic Prawns & Shrimp are not considered Japanese food at all... in fact never heard of them. read more

Woah! I am really enjoying this place. I have been here about five times now, and its been very consistent. It is not the best sushi to be had in the bay area, but it is very good (especially for the price). Last night I enjoyed Uni (Sea Urchin) for my first time. It was very good. It was a little spongy, a bit salty, but overall very good. I was skeptical before. One thing is for absolute sure, this has some amazing side effects :) Miso is miso, and it was great. The albacore with garlic... oh boy, what a difference a little garlic can do on this classic sushi dish. The fish was very fresh. The Caledonia roll was built for me. If I had to pick out my ingredients to make a perfect roll, this has it all, and some I wouldn't have thought to add that make it a touch mo' betta! Avocado, shrimp, eel, cucumber.... The Seered Ahi Salad was a favorite because the dressing is the perfect sweet and light blend with the fresh ahi. Size is nice, the fish was pretty good. Could have been a little better, but nothing to really gripe about. The Green Tea Ice Cream , and Chocolate Mousse are pretty good as well, but in the future I may pass, and take up ice cream or desert down the street somewhere instead. The service was excellent in my opinion. The head chef whom I believe is the owner as well, is a great guy. Always friendly, waving, and smiling even when I am walking by the restaurant. The service is very pleasant from start to finish. The actual decor is fine. Nothing fancy, but it doesn't need to be. My husband and I live in Sausalito and have been here about a half dozen times in the last year, so I'm disappointed to see so many poor reviews. This is a neighborhood sushi joint, not meant to be like a gourmet sushi ran. The selections are pretty basic but you'll find all of the traditional rolls. We've experienced consistently good sushi. Good, but not drive out-of-your-way to eat here amazing--just to be specific. Probably at most, one time I had fish that was a little too fishy tasting. And maybe the service was very slow once, but otherwise they are always pretty attentive. In general, I'm still adjusting to how much more restaurants charge in the Bay Area vs. Seattle, so if Sweet Ginger wanted to lower their prices I would be OK with it. Sausalitans need to cross that bridge and experience real Japanese. This place don't cut it. I came here with a group of 11 other people wondering if our large group would effect the service and food. But not a problem. No one came when we got there, ate or left. I think I can safely say I've had good and bad sushi and this place joins the bad ranks. The menu has a decent variety. I got the teriyaki salmon with sush (the only sushi that comes with it is the fried spicy tuna roll - you can ask for a replacement, like my friend did, but it'll cost you the evil eye from the waitress). I was pretty disappointed with the size of everything when I got my box (which I think was $12). Why did my miso soup strangely taste like vomit? Well I ate it anyway because I was starving and I hate wasting food. The salmon was significantly larger than my friend who ordered the same. Also it tasted pretty much like it came from Costco's freezer section. Actually, maybe a little worse. The sauce didn't help to soften the fish's rubbery consistency. And the salad leaves got lost under the bath of mayo/dressing concoction. Tuna rolls were really small and there were only 4-5 of them. The fried covering around the nori was chewy and the whole thing was just bland. The only thing that was plentiful was rice...and I could have stayed home to eat that. Sweet Ginger isn't going to knock your socks off, but they will impress you with their generous portions and fresh shashimi. The seafood Udon bowl was absolutely perfect with jumbo shrimp, oysters, whitefish, and fishcake. The broth was perfectly flavored with bonito flakes. The most impressive aspect of Sweet Ginger is the huge chunks that they provide for the shashimi. The CA sushi rolls were also delicious with fresh snow crab, light mayo, and perfect avocado. The prices were just about right considering the location and cost of product. Sweet Ginger's service was also very friendly and helpful. I'd like to give them 4 stars, but it's not quite at 4-star caliber. With that said, Sweet Ginger is a great little restaurant that will definitely provide a solid dining out experience. read more

Sweet Ginger is my favorite sushi place in Marin. The food is fresh and tastes very clean. I love their Rainbow Roll and their Spicy Tuna Roll. I was so impressed with the tuna I ordered a second roll This place is charming and pleasant. The location on Caledonia is very quintessential Sausalito . The prices are about $12 - $15 a roll which is average price for sushi in Marin. What I love about this place is I am always very pleased with the quality of each item. I also got Tempura Prawns and vegetables. It was delicious. The food tastes very bright and fresh which is important to me with fish of any kind. I saw some Soba Noodle dishes on a nearby plate that looked amazing. I will have to try them next time. For me this place understated excellence. The shop was rather empty, there was just two other tables occupied and it was dinner time. Usually the no. of patrons serves as a good estimate on your dining experience. We ordered a Dragon roll, ume shiso sushi and a Tokyo style ramen. Along with two hot green tea, the meal cost around $40. The Dragon toll and ume shiso sushi was yummy though they could really work on their presentation. The whole presentation was untidy and the sushi weren't "glued" well together. Also, the Dragon roll was tiny. The smallest sushi rolls I ever had so far in SF! The Tokyo Style Ramen was a huge disappointment. The chashu pork tasted weird and looks artificial. Fish cakes taste like plastic. The broth and noodles tasted bland. An average place to visit if you are craving for sushi and sushi only. Do not recommend their noodles at all. read more

I hate giving bad reviews. Like hate it. And it takes a lot for me to review an establishment negatively but Sweet Ginger done pissed me off tonight. I have ordered the same thing from them always, a crunchy, spicy tuna roll, my own roll that I special order and some gyoza. I order again tonight. There was an issue that I hadn't hit their minimum of $25, ok that's weird because its never happened...but no big deal, I added more on to the order to hit the delivery minumum. We received our food and opened it up and we didn't recognize a single thing. The fish was mushy and tasted so overly fishy that we spit it out. (and threw it all away). I have no idea what they sent us but it was unrecognizable. I called to discuss with them and they said this is what I ordered (however, he kept mentioning words that I had no idea even meant so I know I didn't order that). Anyway, after going back and forth for a few minutes and coming to no resolution except him saying that I ordered this, I decided to hang up and be done with Sweet Ginger. I stopped by for lunch the other day for sea urchin which they don't seem to ever have anymore so I ordered a lunch special. The sushi rolls were deep fried and OMG who thought of that? I had one roll and burped all day. The dipping sauce is tasteless and I want to know what's in it? No grated daikon, and it didn't taste like dashi to me. I make dashi often and it doesn't take much to have a nice flavor. The last few times I've been here has been off but this time it made me think something's not right. Even the rice was stale or at least not soft, fluffy and a bit sticky the way Japanese rice should be. Being served by a person who I don't think has ever smiled, ever makes it that much more somber. I also don't understand a handful of mixed greens with a very sweet dressing just dumped on top so only some of the leaves are coated and the rest are dry. Lunch was very inexpensive but still, ugh. I stopped on the way back to work and bought an apple to balance out that lunch. I wonder what happened to this place? It used to be better. I just scrolled through Yelp reviews and it looks like a lot of people agree with me. No wonder it always looks empty. If they read their reviews they would see what to do to improve. The food was very so-so and the atmosphere is more of a corner coffee place to grab cheap coffee and read email in the afternoon. Also not properly heated. The mango and major tartar on sea weed salad was absurd: 5 little rounds heaped on cucumber slices that were overpowering and too spicy. The miso soup was OK. The sushi was not bad but the Maguro was cut incorrectly and just a slab of fish. No sensual experience. The Unagi was drowned in sauce that was way too sweet with no distinctive flavor. Sweet Ginger is my favorite sushi restaurant in Marin! I'd describe it as a humble restaurant. It's not the hip scene as another well known Sausalito sushi restaurant it's more quiet. Sweet Ginger is mellow but the food is fresh, delicious and more affordable and the staff is great! My favorites at Sweet Ginger are the Seaweed Salad - fresh and crisp, the Garlic Hamachi (I think it's the Hamachi - it's on their special board usually), the Sake Salmon - so fresh and yummy, the Rock and Roll and of course the California Roll.
