Sweet Ginger is my favorite sushi restaurant in Marin! I'd describe it as a humble restaurant. It's not the hip scene as another well known Sausalito sushi restaurant it's more quiet. Sweet Ginger is mellow but the food is fresh, delicious and more affordable and the staff is great! My favorites at Sweet Ginger are the Seaweed Salad - fresh and crisp, the Garlic Hamachi (I think it's the Hamachi - it's on their special board usually), the Sake Salmon - so fresh and yummy, the Rock and Roll and of course the California Roll. I have tried Sweet Ginger on various occasions hoping it will get better. Unfortunately the food is just not good. There are definitely other sushi options in Sausalito/Mill Valley but this one is a very convenient so I wish the quality would improve. My udon noodle soup was bland and the noodles were mushy. Always good. If what you want is fish, this place is great. The rolls are good, but lack the fancy specialness and presentation you'll get for 2x the cash. Living in Sausalito, Sweet Ginger is my go to for "I want sushi." The other fancier restaurants are for dinner with friends or business. Great food, a very so-so service. The sushi was fresh and delicious, but by the time it was delivered to our table we were so hungry we probably could have eaten anything placed in front of us. The lady serving barely cracked a smile, forgot to bring my water and the last roll took so long we told them to forget it. And no, they weren't packed at all. The dragon roll was great as well as the 49er's and the Rock N Roll. The sign by the bathroom stated "for employees only" which puzzles a customer in need of a good pee. Horrible experience. The service is terrible, my group of 7 was waiting for 25 minutes just to get greeted and order drinks. The sushi isn't the worst I've ever had but very overpriced for very small, mediocre portions. I could get better sushi at a convenient store. read more

I'm surprised at some of these awful reviews. I just found this place recently and have really liked the dishes I've had. I have only had a few things, no hot dishes. Specifically the hawaiian poki and spicy sashimi appetizers have been delicious and come in a good sized portion. I've gone back just for those two dishes (plenty for a meal) and they are consistently quite delicious. I lopped off one star because there really is no atmosphere. read more

Even at comparable prices (i.e. not just at Sushi Ran down the street), there is better sushi to be had in Southern Marin. I do like the casual feel of this place and the friendly, albeit somewhat frazzled, service. No reservations required. No attitude. Good for takeout. And the sushi isn't BAD - it's just not the greatest around. We loved the flaming (yes, as in flambe) scallop/mushroom dish, and the Caledonia roll was nice. I really should have skipped the Tako/octopus, though; it was tough and stringy and rubbery. Side note: One of the 2 sushi chefs is a woman. That's a rare sight, but I respect them for it. read more

Sushi delivery is a huge plus. I know it sounds weird, but hey, when you're lazy and really really tired of pizza, it's not a bad option. So needless to say, sushi delivery is pretty good - rice isn't dry, fish isn't weird. Just as good as going to the restaurant and getting it. We came here at the tailend of the lunch period to snag some sushi. I was disturbed when I walked in the door to find a sign that read "Restrooms for employees only" which is not allowed if you serve alcohol (which they do). Sat down with the crew and the place was empty but that didn't distract us. I had some gyoza, Shrimp Tempura roll and the NY Roll. Both pretty standard and delicious. Came here with sushi-avid friends after a long bikeride over the Golden Gate. We ordered the seaweed salad, salmon maki, and the rock n' roll, which were all super fresh and filling. The salmon, especially had a buttery, savory taste that has rivaled the best of any I've had. The evening we went to Sweet Ginger, there were only 4 tables being occupied at 6:30 at night on a Sunday. No other customers came in. We walked in and and an angry man handed us menus and pointed to a table. The same very rude man came back to take our order. He acted as if it were a chore to deal with us. When he came back he rudely served our drinks. He handed my husband a can of Sprite with no glass, and proceeded to bring my appetizer ( twenty minutes later) with my husbands entree. Miso soup was included with my meal and never came. The $28 dollar fish Entree dinner was absolutely pathetic. I have never complained about a Restaurant before, but this was bad. A small piece of fish, broccoli on a piece of wilted lettuce and a ball of rice. The waiter took forever. We were there for 1 1/2 Hours and he never came to check on us once. As we paid, I asked about the lack of miso soup. The woman behind the counter took $3 off of our bill. I waited outside for my husband, only to see our waiter pull up to the curb after doing a delivery!!!! I couldn't believe it. Explains the lack of service. Even the woman that was there did not check on us. Terrible Service, Terrible Food, Never again!!! read more

I've been to this restaurant a handful of times. Good fresh fish, the prices are not outrageous, and it's not crowded like Sushi Ran down the street. However, each time I go here I remark that a lot of time seems to elapse between placing the order and food appearing on the table. Some of their daily special rolls are tasty, though...like the asparagus and albacore, or the shrimp and mango, or the tuna with garlic (caution: only order this one if you loooove garlic!). Overall, the place is friendly and casual. I will return, but I must remember to order a miso soup to help tide me over. Long story short...I was hungover and watching crap movies (that I often end up loving), and last Sunday the movie just happened to be Ramen Girl with Brittany Murphy...I know, I know. After the movie was over I was on a mission for ramen! I was about to give up until I found Sweet Ginger on Yelp! I called and ordered some...it's the one on their lunch special with fish cake, "fancy" pork and eggs. Happy to say, I ate the entire thing. I honestly think it was a serving for 3! Yes, I've tried the place down the street, which is great of course - but ignoring that and giving this place a try on it's own merits, we thought Sweet Ginger was great too. I've been here twice now and both times I was super satisfied with everything - the fresh and tasty rolls, the friendly and attentive service, good desserts, and not too bad a price tag. It's a nice, basic looking place with nice basic food options, which are done very very well from everything we tried.
