Slammin' French Onion Soup
Otis M.

I had been wanting to try Sweet Lou's and wanted some French onion soup on a frosty afternoon, so my ordering decision was easy. I was expecting the usual stoneware crock with the cheese dripping over the side but Lou's Slamming French Onion Soup is different. It's served in a smaller bowl and the cheese is confined to the top of the floating baguette raft. The soup was tasty though, full of Lou's caramelized onions. I also got the signature Sweet Lou pastrami/corned beef sandwich for a more complete experience; ate half in the restaurant and took half home. The meat is prepared in house and was moist and flavorful though "piled high" on the menu is a bit of an exaggeration; Katz' or Carnegie Deli this is not. The horseradish dressing needed a bit more bite so I added more horseradish at home for the second half. Also, a pickle would have been appreciated. By the way, Lou garnished the soup with a bit of cabbage leaf and the sandwich with cabbage and a pineapple slice. Lou's is a quirky place and your experience will depend on how much you enjoy the quirks. I was served by a waitress but watched Lou wait on a couple who had ordered the one pound potato dish. He brought out two giant potatoes and displayed them, like steaks at a high end steak house, so the guests could decide which they wanted. I passed the finished dish as I was leaving and it looked really good. I would say this is a must for a return visit. Of note: there's a surcharge of I believe 3% for credit cards. And Sweet Lou's Bistro is up a flight of outside stairs from the street; you'd be better off parking in the lot in the back off Walnut Lane which is on the same level as the entrance.

Service was excellent. We were immediately greeted by Lou, the owner and chef when we walked in (in the middle of a bit of a snow storm). Our server, although I didn't get her name, was very friendly, knowledgable, and attentive. Even in the bad weather and only being open another hour, they had some other tables filled and a warm and welcoming ambiance. By warm, I mean figuratively and literally! There's a little wood stove going inside and everything. The vibe was so cozy and cute Perfect for our first date night out after a baby and return from deployment. Portions of the food were large and very tasty. I cannot wait to return to try the pastrami and some dessert. In the mean time, their chicken parm was cooked perfectly and we had leftovers! This place is a real labor of love. Bravo, Lou. Thanks for having us in.

These are mozzarella stick logs. Very yummy.

Nice rustic place. We ordered the crazy mozzarella sticks. They were yummy. We did ask for marinara and it came with a meat sauce, but they gave us regular sauce when it asked. I ordered the ziti with marinara and also came with a meat sauce. But they made it right and took it off the bill I said I wanted to pay for it since I was taking it home anyway rather than being thrown away but they gave it to me anyway. Very good service very nice. People will definitely go back. Super nice people. My son had pulled pork mac & cheese that he liked very much as well.

Dinner for two. Lasagna and egg plant.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this meal is a novel.... Simply the best Italian meal from a eatery, one would think it came from your mama's kitchen on Sunday afternoon... Service, food and atmosphere are all excellent. Well done Chef Lou and staff!!

This is what they think prime rib looks like.

 Tough, grey, with tendons.

I have to place a review here regarding two meals I purchased from Sweet Lou's Bistro on 9/2/2023. I was on vacation in the area at a lake house we own nearby, and we had seen Sweet Lou's on Facebook posts and were eager to try it out. I had ordered two of the specials for that day: The Prime Rib and the Lasagna. These are sold as meals for two, so I figured we had dinner to last us two nights between myself and my spouse. When we opened the trays of food upon getting home, we were appalled at the contents. The meat was grey and tough, with gristle and tendon. It was definitely not prime rib. I am not even sure what cut of meat it was. We could not cut it easily with a sharp knife, and the outer edge was ringed by a tough strip of tendon. The description is that this is a meal for 2. Aside from the inedible meat, the tray included about 1 dozen potato wedges that were overcooked, and about a cup of salad greens. We consoled ourselves that we still had the lasagna to eat. We were wrong. The lasagna was dry. The noodles were so overdone they were crispy and you couldn't even bite into them. The meat tasted like someone used Italian dressing to season it and it tasted bitter and burnt. It also included a small green salad. It was past the time that the restaurant closed when we opened the food trays, so no chance to call to discuss this meal. In addition, it was a holiday weekend, and they are only open after 12 noon from Wednesday to Saturday. I tried in vain for two weeks to reach them by phone, but no one answered each time I called. Since we do not live in the area, I am unable to simply drive over to complain. The meals cost over $100 and I had to throw them in the garbage. In the end, my dinner that night was McDonalds. Here's my advise. Avoid eating food from this restaurant. The only solace I had from my expensive mistake was the hours of laughing about the meat and what made them think what they served was prime rib. If I saw a place here on Yelp to post a picture of the food I got, I would. If I do see a spot for an image, I will include one. If the folks at Sweet Lou's have an issue with my complaint, just post a phone number I can call to speak with you about my food and we can have a discussion.

Food. Is very good. It is easy to find. I like the food, the service is excellent, AND it is very close to where we live

This place is a real gem in a burgeoning foodie mecca of Schuylerville. You go into the restaurant, are greeted by Lou himself and then sit yourself down at eclectic chairs, tables and decor and look through the menu which features a lot of great Italian dishes. We started off with the mozzarella logs which are a MUST. A potential meal in themselves, they were hand-pulled by Lou and the batter was delicious (as was the red dipping sauce which really brought out the flavor). The garlic pasta had perfectly cooked pasta and featured big, bold flavors and fantastic olive oil at the bottom of the pan for dipping in the baguette slices that come with the dish. The turkey BLT was similarly fantastic. Garnished in a type of "speedie" sauce the turkey, straight from the turkey (no deli meat here) tender and delicious and the rest of the ingredients were fresh and really complimented the turkey and didn't overwhelm it. This is a unique place in the best possible way. If you are in Saratoga County and want a unique, delicious meal, get yourself to Schulyerville and give Sweet Lou's a try!

The food was amazing. The Chic's Dream was like a post-Thanksgiving turkey sandwich turned up to 11. My husband was in heaven with the house-made, from-scratch pastrami and corned beef in the Sweet Lou. Lou actually came out and had us choose the potato he'd use for our fries. Warm, friendly service. Delicious food. Can't wait to get back!

Finally got to try Sweet Lou's Bistro....well it is an understatement to say we are impressed it passes that. Not just by the delicious food but by the charismatic waitress and very friendly out going Chef Lou who came over to our table in a matter of minutes of being there with a warm welcome and a run down of how he does things...one word HOMEMADE. You can see how important it is for Chef Lou to make/give you great food. Laughs had, bellies full and an eagerness to go back to try everything else on that menu. So glad to have tried this gem and cannot wait to come back. It is a must go. (I unfortunately took mostly videos of the food so if the photos not the best quality it's a screenshot from the vid)

Great menu. Serves up real deal meats. Lou roasts, cooks & brines on premise his meat creations. Exquisite sandwiches & dinners. Americana and Italian food at its best. Absolutely will be back! Had rueben & turkey sand. w/ hand pulled mozzarella logs. Wonderful portion & price. Wonderful owner & staff. Thanks Lou & Anne Marie for the lunch experience today! Best wishes!

I wish I could say nice things about the desserts but unfortunately I can't. Neither of them were good. The crust on the coconut custard pie tasted bitter and burnt even though it wasn't burnt. Just not sure what happened there, unless the crisco to make the crust was old? The lemon tart didn't taste like anything really, definitely not lemon. It was buried in powdered sugar so it just tasted like a mouthful of sugar. It did come with the tiniest little dollop of whipped cream. I definitely wish there was a healthier portion of that because that and the fresh berries on the side were the best parts.

We had read that it was the same people who run Hamlet and Ghost, so we wanted to check it out. The inside is gorgeous, bright and welcoming. The menu is Montreal inspired, which we noticed immediately, and loved. We just wanted to split a couple things to try, so we ordered the poutine with duck confit and the steak tartare. The Poutine was fabulous! They ultra crispy house made fries had such good flavor on their own, but were made incredible with the gravy, melty cheese curds and decadent duck. This dish was amazing. The steak tartare was also very good and fresh, the house made chips were also killer. Last but not least, the maple soft serve. Heavenly! Ultra creamy and smooth with a great depth of maple flavor. The caramel swirl and crunchy nibs on the top were so good. I am not a big sweets person, but I would order this again for sure. Delicious. This is a hidden gem and surprised us all! Finally had a chance to try Kindred last week(end)…read more I was honestly won over when we first walked in....we didn't have a reservation but asked if they could accommodate two for dinner. The hostess/server was awesome: not pretentious and looking down her nose at us since we didn't have a reservation. She did say that she needed the table by 7 PM. No problem! That said, it was pretty busy for being early in the evening. Guests kept coming in as we were getting ready to depart. The food that we tried was very good: -the chips with crème fraîche were very nice, but I don't know that I would go out of my way for these again. I really enjoyed the chips themselves... very thin and light ...and quite salty (in a good way). A little bit of fish roe is mixed in for "extra saltiness" and a little bit of a fishy experience in the crème fraîche. -Brussel sprouts for me were the winner! Absolutely delicious and we added some chicken so that we'd have a little bit of protein. Grilled chicken was perfectly flavored and not dry at all. Brussels sprouts had just the right amount of char and umami. -flatbread was honestly my least favorite. We stuck with the basic burrata/Margherita pizza/flatbread, and after eating the brussels sprouts it just didn't hold up in terms of flavor. Some of the other options might be better if you're looking for more of a flavor punch.... but it was served steaming, hot, and freshly made. As more people showed up, it definitely got noisier... so prepare for a bit of a loud environment...pretty much the same situation in all downtown Saratoga restaurants these days. I will definitely go back and try some other items on the menu.

Memorable for all the wrong reasons and added to one other anniversary dinner, as a sad experience. We started out with the olive and flatbread appetizer. Massive plate of olives with a "tapenade" on the plate that basically was the same olives poorly smashed up and added to the plate. The accompanying flatbread was stale and subpar quality of bread. This dish could be easily fixed by adding in some roasted red peppers and feta. They could easily go up the street to Saratoga Olive Oil company and get a quality oil and balsamic to drizzle on this mess. Otherwise all there is a plate of bitter olives and stale bread. For dinner we ordered the Salmon with mashed sweet potatoes and Brussels. The salmon was just okay. The Brussels were horribly done you could tell they were boiled first and then broiled but clearly boiled too long. Both the Brussels and mashed sweet potatoes lacked flavor of any kind, just bland. We ate the salmon and left the rest. Lastly, we ordered the trio of eggplant. The menu description is more exciting than the sad reality of this plate. When you say trio you would think 3 distinct flavors, however, what you get is just one hot mess of a plate. The eggplant pieces are cut entirely too thick. The eggplant is NOT fried and barely cooked at all. I can't even begin to figure out how they cooked that eggplant. Undercooked eggplant is a cringey experience anywhere! The sauce on the plate is really what sent me over the edge! It tasted like the sauce from the can of spaghetti O's from childhood. Instantly took me back to eating spaghetti O's. Needless to say we didn't dare ask for dessert. After spending over $135 bucks for that mess we couldn't get out of there fast enough. First time I left an anniversary dinner still hungry!

What a gem. What a vibe. WHAT a cocktail menu…read more Tucked away, totally unpretentious, but with a STAGGERING, almost-unbelievable range of martinis and martini-adjacent cocktails in this fall/winter-perfect, cozy, mostly-paneled speakeasy that's also evocative of a semi-secret lobby bar of an old hotel (it's not though!) Even the music selections made it sound like prohibition era jazz standards were drifting in from another room. It manages to be simultaneously totally old school and totally hip, fancy-feeling and swanky, but also with the ease of a local watering hole... no easy feat. From t-shirts to suits, locals to newbies, it has a totally come-as-you-are, everybody's-welcome atmosphere. Even the locals made us feel at home, giving us great insight into several restaurants all less than a block or two away. Wines and beers also available, but mixology is the main act here. We were there over two separate bartender shifts, both times on a quiet Sunday late-afternoon into evening, but both gents have it all down to a science without forsaking the art of crafting a cocktail. They pushed my formerly-favorite Manhattan (at NYC's King Cole Bar, there, as much for the environs as the drink) squarely out of the top spot, and as I told our bartender after I spied a semi-hidden bottle of Chartreuse and he offered to make an off-the-menu Last Word, it was the first time I fully understood that drink. That hard-to-find liquid green-gold is in VERY good hands at 9 Maple! Perfect for date night, but also welcoming to the lone visitor in search of a PERFECTLY crafted, amply -poured cocktail.
