Felt bad for them, but generally expect a friendly welcome as a customer. Stepped in to buy something quickly from the pre-made case. Stood at the cash register for 10 min before being acknowledged. The cashier finally asked what I wanted then proceeded to walk away and make coffees before actually taking my order. Another employee eventually came over (5-10 more minutes) and I got my premade and paid in less than a minute. Disappointing. read more

There's only one person working during breakfast when a conference is in town, Beyoncé is in town and the tourist season is about to start. The person working was not very friendly, was upset that a customer told the worker that what the worker made was not what he ordered (he was right I heard the order). This was at my hotel, so I ordered from there twice. Day 1 - they had some really good looking glazed doughnuts. I was out of my mind when I ordered a breakfast sandwich instead - these weren't listed on any of the main menus, but I noticed a small sign that said "sandwiches". I got a plain bagel, with tasteless eggs, tasteless sausage, and I assume cheese. Easily the worst bagel breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten. I got a mocha with a shot of hazelnut - that was ok. Day 2 - I wanted that glazed donut, but the bakery was closed... nobody, no pastries, oh well. Day 3 - they were out of the glazed doughnuts. I got a chocolate croissant instead, which was pretty good. I got the same mocha and it tasted off. They had a few other good looking pastries, but I'd probably just recommend finding another bakery. read more

While the name says 'bakery & diner' I sadly did not sample any of the baked goods as I stopped in for a cup of drip coffee. There were several baked goods which looked tasty but I held out and did not partake. As for the coffee, they brew Dark Matter coffee which was spot for my taste. The staff immediately greeted me and took my order. Additionally they asked if I mind waiting a few minutes while they brewed a fresh coffee. I appreciate that they asked and since I always enjoy a freshly brewed cup of java I had no problem waiting. And as they indicated, the wait was fairly short. The space, which is rather small has 3-4 tables/chairs near the back of the shop. Also, the shop is easy to walk past so make sure you're on the lookout as you're walking along Ohio. For what it's worth, WTB is attached to the Acme Hotel so if you see it you've found WTB. If I lived in the area WTB would definitely be in my coffee shop rotation. And on the right day I'd probably break down and try on the baked items. read more

Delightful bakery in the North River section of Chicago. The place is small and quaint, but had a great comforting ambiance. They sell many desserts and baked goods, along with some other basic breakfast foods. I ate the Homer Simpson™ Donut, along with a cappuccino and Vanilla Chocolate cake pop. The donut was spectacular and had a very sweet and buttery icing. I could of eaten half a dozen! The cake pop was also very unique, I wasn't expecting a hard thick candy shell coating, but it worked well. Came to explore Chicago for a few days and was told this place was a good place to stop for coffee. Walking in it looked hip, but the donut case is almost empty and the signs all have stuff marked out e.g. no bagels. I order a soy latte (they also were out of all other plant based milk) and oatmeal and it literally comes to $10. Little did I know I'd be getting one packet of instant oatmeal with some fruit and cinnamon for $5. The latte is more than a 1/3 foam so even though I paid for 12oz I'm actually getting closer to 8oz. Definitely got finessed out of $10. Super bummed and still very hungry. Won't come back here for the remainder of my trip. read more

This is a small coffee shop and bakery with graffiti painted walls. It is next door to the ACME hotel and easy to walk by so keep an eye out. I went here around 10am on a Friday morning and they were already sold out of most donuts. They only had a vegan donut or a vanilla glazed; i went for the vanilla glazed. and a cappuccino. The donut was honestly one of the best i've ever had. It was so fresh and fluffy and the glaze was sweet with real vanilla bean specs. Yum Yum Yum! read more

We were staying here for a weekend and had a lovely experience Saturday morning. However, our rating stems from a miserable and unprofessional experience Saturday evening when we were looking to get a coffee and muffin. The person closing refused to try and pour us a coffee stating that they close in 6 minutes and they didn't have enough. They also stated that they cannot give me a muffin because they already cleaned up. I hope this issue gets taken care of as I do enjoy this coffee shop. Stopped by this location after eating at Cafe Integral. It was completely empty and the place itself is kind of meh. We tried the S'mores Doughssant and omgggggg. I might be addicted. Its a flaky puff pastry crust with whipped cream + marshmallow cream filling. Half had vanilla filling and half had chocolate, I wish it was all vanilla! The chocolate was overwhelmingly sweet. They only had half doughssants for $2. Not bad price and a great portion size! I've tried cake balls and other desserts at the other West Town location and everything is always pretty darn good! This version of West Town Bakery is embedded in the ground floor of the Acme Hotel. My friend raves about this place because all of the goodies are tasty as well as organic. There are a couple of tables in case you want to eat your treats there. There are baked goods large and small, so you can have a regulation-sized nutella danish (absolutely rich and decadent) or a munchkin-sized cake ball. While I liked the cake balls, I heard a wide range of opinions of them in my group. Some thought they were awful because they were "not baked enough" because of its gooey brownie-like consistency, while others say they are supposed to be rich morsels and that is how the exterior ingredients (nuts, sprinkles) can adhere to the moist interior. I've been dying to try a Doughssant ever since I saw that there was such a thing, and this new location of West Town Bakery was close enough to grab on on the way to work. I got a chocolate raspberry creme filled one, and it was NOT as good as I'd hoped. It had a weird, bland taste, because it wasn't the normal buttery croissant taste, and it wasn't the normal doughy sweet doughnut taste. I don't know if this was just specific to the bakery, or all doughssants (or cronuts). It was also a little to oily and fried tasting for me. I also got a chocolate peanut butter cake ball to try, and it was okay as well. Nothing special, but different than the normal cupcake/cookie/brownie treats. Their other goodies looked really pretty in the case, So I might give them a try. But if they all have a bland taste I might not be interested in tasting them. Quick: A fast, welcoming pastry shop. Come for the $5 screwdrivers! Pros: $5 drinks, tasty ham and cheese, small but cozy atmosphere. Cons: Closes at 11PM This handsome shop is very small. Room for 6-8 in the main area then a strip of seating in the back for 6-8 more. It's a one man cafe with the pastries lining glass cases and drink orders taken at a walk by window or inside. The best part is they serve alcohol and a $5, heavy handed screwdriver with real orange juice is the best quick drink you'll have. And he makes them right there behind the pastry counter, almost the way you'd get one at your friend's apartment. A friend, making another friend a drink to have a good time. The ham and cheese hit the spot perfectly and we sat in the cafe as a layover between our destinations. Felt really comfy, though the atmosphere doesn't lend itself to drinking. Definitely happy our hotel had West Town Bakery in the lobby, though we wished it was open later, we understand the demand for bakeries tend to drop in the night. read more

As far as I can tell, the cake ball here is basically a glorified donut hole. My version of a "cake ball" is an enrolled cupcake, sort of like a Hostess with chocolate all around (and good). There's nothing wrong with them,but nothing I'd come back for. The doughssaint, on the other hand, is probably worth stabbing someone with a fork. Crunchy, buttery, sweet, and you can feel yourself dying slowly as you chomp it. I tried the S'mores, which had a lovely marshmallow fluff filling. I got the egg croissant (no bacon) which was $7 (cheaper than corner bakery) and I was surprised how good it was. The girl making my sandwich offered to add arugula and pickled onion which got me happy and excited. That's what made the sandwich. It is large and tasty. Although I was looking forward to getting homefries with it like the website says, I was still satisfied and I will def get it again. Oh, I got a free bag of chips I won't eat till lunch but it was nice to get something extra. This is a great gem I will def be going back to. I am not a fan of the ACE hotels. Had I known this place was attached, I might not have gone. But, I was looking for pastries convenient to my hotel and am actually very glad I found this place. Nice pastries. I bought about a dozen for a meeting I was having, and people demolished them, complimenting the ginger scones particularly. The staff was super nice about the pastries. He individually wrapped each pastry before placing them in the box and (it's the little things), when he put the large box into the bag, he knew to tip the bag (instead of the box) so that pastries wouldn't spill all over themselves. (Not everyone thinks about this.) That said, there isn't much quantity in the cases, so my purchase kind of wiped them out for the day. There are a lot of options, but only maybe 4 or 5 of each item. And, by the time I got there (maybe 8:00 am), there were often only 2 things of each. read more

I've only tried one item here and been here only once but based on that one item alone I would go back for more. I had the chocolate cake ball. It was very rich and oh, so chocolaty. Sucker punch for b-fast? Mmmm, yum! About the same time as WestTown's Clark location opened May-ish 2018, the sandwich menu at this used-to-be-gem of a place changed. On my 5+ year quest to find a delicious and organic egg-sandwich place in the heart of Chicago, the sign on the door advertising Organic, local and some other catchy greenish term attracted me. Still no response to my email asking about the source of the eggs used about Feb'18, but hey, friendly staff and quick intent full service. They faked it well, enough for me to enjoy the b-fast sandwiches for a few months. Now, apparently to streamline production - there are two places now you know, the egg-sandwiches and other sandwiches are pre-made and stuffed in a hockey-puck like bun. Heck, might as well go all the way and streamline the coffee, get rid of the espresso machine and invest in a Mr Coffee drip pot or two! No, chopped bacon bits in a creamy sauce stuffed in dough belongs in a vending machine, not at the other end of a counter, soon to be presented with a friendly convincing smile that what is being served is good. Really! Plus the coffee cup lids are no longer compostable, but standard #6 polystyrene - impossible to recycle. Besides the soda, what actually is Organic, local and ....? So I let my standard down for a few months are really enjoyed the non-organic egg sandwich. Maybe because of the intent, the pleasant service of the staff. Now? Why invest in an additional cafe when an existing one gets compromised? Sounds like a development or investment business interest. Too bad. Other greats also expanded (StarB*, Ben & J*, Nake*, Odawall*). My quest continues. Organic egg b-fast sandwiches in Chgo. Hint to cafes. The decor inside is very welcoming as well. I stopped in around 3pm to cure my sweet tooth and they were not very busy. So pleased they had multiple gluten-free options (cupcakes, brownies and cookies)! Very satisfied with the taste of the chocolate cake w/vanilla icing GF cupcake I ordered. COMFY AND COZY SURROUNDINGS This looked like one of those places I would regularly haunt if it was closer. The pastries were just oozing temptation as they posed behind the glass counter and the scattered tables just begged for conversation or some study time with a laptop and coffee at my side. BUT THAT ONE SERVICE GUY... I smiled and tried to make small talk with the lone, young guy behind the counter. He didn't reciprocate any of it. Every chat was met with a grunt. When I asked if those were Nuts on top of a Doughnut he responded smugly, "Whaddaya think they are?" Whoa. I guess none of the cozy and comfy surroundings were getting to this guy. GREAT PASTRIES At least the pastries were good. Not top-notch because they still had that slight 'left out' texture and flavor but still way above chain stores. My Apple Cinnamon Doughssant (like a long Cronut I guess) was very flaky and thick. The Beer and Pretzel Doughnut seemed to be one of their most unusual offerings (and looked the coolest) but it seemed more Caramel than Beer in flavor. They don't have a big selection of baked goods, some gluten free cupcakes, cookies, etc. The most unique ones were the cake balls, different flavors such as French toast, red velvet, Mexican chocolate, etc. I liked my Mexican chocolate one which had coconut flavor to it, went back second time and got a red velvet, was pretty good too. Also tried their brownies and cheesecake brownies, these were good but nothing to rave about. What I love the most is their hot chocolate, really good and cozy especially for a cold winter! West Town doesn't have a ton of vegan options, but what it does have is great. They're not labeled "vegan" but anything with a white label is vegan, according to the manager. I got chocolate peanut, triple chocolate and cookie dough cake balls ($1.75 each). All were tasty, but the chocolate peanut and triple chocolate ones burst with ooey-gooey flavor and sweet goodness. I stumbled across West Town Bakery when I had some time to kill and got tired of the usual Starbucks. It was a quaint but colorful coffee shop on a busy block. I walked right in and immediately liked the atmosphere. The walls were dripping with colorful neon graffiti and it echoed with urban chill hop. The person working the coffee bar was super helpful when I asked about some menu items. I ordered a cappuccino with foam as smooth as the ambience of the place. I tried one of the peanut butter chocolate cake balls and it was great. I sat in the back and appreciated the wall of albums with the bakery name playfully photoshopped in. What happened to this place? West Town Bakery used to be one of my go-to places for lunch. They had great hot sandwiches that were worth the money and were very filling. I went in today to grab a sandwich. I noticed their menu looked different, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. I ordered the Ham & Cheese on Pretzel Bun. I was surprised when I saw the employee pull it out of the fridge, remove it from a plastic bag and toss it in an oven/microwave (similar to how Starbucks does their sandwiches). When I sat down to eat it, it looked like a sad McDonald's breakfast sandwich. The "pretzel" bun looked sad and deflated. The cheese was dripping down the sides, the ham was lukewarm. Me and my appetite are so disappointed. I paid $9 for a knockoff McGriddle. Plus, the friendly staff that used to work there was nowhere to be found. To my surprise, the poor customer service was the best part of my experience. I'm only giving 2-stars because they at least have Dark Matter Coffee. Is that enough for me to return? Stayed at the ACME and got breakfast vouchers for this bakery. Bacon and egg croissant ($7) was good- very oily, but the hot sauce was a great addition! Not too spicy, and a little sweet to contrast the salt. Also had a chocolate donut and pumpkin scone on the other days, and they were both pretty dry and flavorless. Coffee was okay, but others in my group complained it was too sour. The baristas were very friendly and helpful! Definitely worth a try if you're staying in the hotel, esp. if you have those meal tickets! read more

I love their cake balls, and picked up a half dozen of these the other day as a gift. The space is super small, and while they don't yet have the option in the cash register for 1/2 dozen of these, the staff were super flexible (the cost of a dozen is $15 - one cakeball costs $1.50, so obviously I wanted to get the more cost-effective pricel). Very nice and easygoing manager happily made the adjustment. I do think that it'd be great if they had some cute bags to be able to give to people if you're giving baked goods as a gift or something to celebrate instead of the plain brown bag, and perhaps a smaller box for the cakeballs. However, the baked goods speak for themselves. So glad that they have a location near the Red Line as it''s closer to me. Their menu is tiny, includes sandwiches both breakfast and lunch, with literally every option including meat. And they're all $8 or more so this certainly isn't cheap. I wish there was just a "make your own option" or something. I was annoyed when I had to order every sandwich sans meat which was basically a bagel with cream cheese and arugula for $8 and $9 with tax. Annoying. Admittedly, it was still good, and I'm sure good with the meat too, but just annoying. I tried the doughssant or whatever aka a cronut and I was unimpressed. They also didn't warm it up which would have made it better. $4 for that. The coffee is just not good. The service is really slow and not super friendly. read more

I work right around the corner and was so excited to try a sandwich from here today. I ordered the ham sandwich and after I paid, the worker told me they were out of ham. I switched to the turkey club which included turkey, lettuce, tomato, avocado and bacon. I added mustard and subtracted mayo. The sandwich sounded much better than what I got - which was a huge soggy mess with wayyyy too much mustard, 1 slice of bacon, 1 tiny piece of lettuce, and zero avocado. I ended up having to disassemble the sandwich in order to fit it into my mouth, and to avoid a mouthful of mustard. I'm sorry to say it was just a really terrible sandwich. Coffe was barely warm and a bit weak. The spinach and feta turnover looked delicious and the bread consistency was good, but the filling lacked any substance. There was just a hint of feta, almost too sparse to notice, and not much spinach. It was more of a light bread than a turnover. They don't understand supply and demand. If you sell out of vegan donuts by 9-10am on the weekend, and the "regular" donuts are still aplenty...make more vegan donuts! How hard is that? Make less during the week if you don't sell out and up the weekend production! I don't recommend this bakery anymore to vegans seeking donuts because it is unreliable and limiting to say but you must wake up early to get the vegan donut or else they are gone!
