I cannot believe I'm giving a bakery 2 stars. I LOVE baked goods and everything sweet. In fact, in the past I had friends that loved Sweet Mandy B's and would bring them to parties, and I was always super excited to hear that they were bringing Sweet Mandy B cupcakes. The frosting used to be THE BEST frosting. But this time it was just meh. Last year a friend shared a brownie from Sweet Mandy B's, and it was AMAZING. So I was happy to pop in to Sweet Mandy's B's last week. We had: Vegan peanut butter bar- disgusting. Not just not worth the calories. My 6 year old started crying and said that didn't count as his desert because it was terrible. We had 2 vegans, me, and a 6 year old and we threw away 1/2 the bar. It also didn't seem to be baked all the way through, the texture felt like it was only half finished baking. Chocolate vegan cupcake- not great. This was just really disappointing, and not worth eating or buying. Chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream- This was fine. It was a tasty cupcake. Not remarkable in any way, but a fine cupcake with fine frosting. Classic Brownie- This was good. A solid brownie. Not remarkable in any way, but a good brownie. Summary: Do not buy the vegan items. My husband and I stopped in today after having lunch nearby. I've walked by this spot many times but felt the urge to walk in today and try something. I got a carrot cake cupcake, my husband got banana pudding and then we got a watermelon shaped cookie for our daughter. The frosting on my cupcake was amazing. I loved it!! The cupcake itself was good too, felt like it was maybe missing something that I couldn't put my finger on though. My husbands banana pudding was really good too. Not the best I've had but it was delicious. My daughter seemed to enjoy the cookie too when she ate it after daycare. There is ample seating inside and everything looks cute and clean. Cute store. They also give discounts to Northwestern employees! I love their variety of options. I got the individual flourless chocolate cake and the banana caramel cabinet. Both were a huge hit with my parents and they're not a huge sweets person. The flourless chocolate cake essentially tasted like fudge or ganache. Not too sweet and not too tongue coating but still felt rich and hefty. The banana caramel cabinet was a fun blend of textures, layers and flavors. The caramel parts added the sweetness and moisture. A friend of mine recommended we stop in at Mandy B's while we were visiting Chicago recently and I'm glad we did! The shop was off the main thoroughfare, but close enough to the Magnificent Mile that it wasn't inconvenient to get to. The shop itself has some nice booths for people to sit in, and bright and friendly colours throughout which was welcoming and added to the ambiance. There were tons of different baked goods to choose from, but my wife and I grabbed a chocolate chip and an oatmeal raisin cookie, and then shared a cupcake. I stopped by Sweet Mandy B's on a Saturday night for a couple items for my friend's birthday. It wasn't too crowded then and the space is beautiful and spacious. I got a banana cream pie and chocolate banana cupcake. I only tried the banana cream pie, which was extremely tasty!! It was not overly sweet, which is nice, and had creamy yet light flavors. Comparatively, the pie is less expensive than their cakes or a large set of cupcakes, so I was quite pleased with the price-to-quantity and quality ratio for the pie. read more

But WOW was the cupcake bad! After moving away this past year I came back home to chicago and stopped by to grab a few of my favorites. However I was met with much disappointment. From the street a person can see the bakers preparing the goods. When I walked by, a tray of cupcakes was being frosted. I stopped in last week to pick up some birthday treats. The chocolate cupcake was elegant in its simplicity. I found the texture of the cake itself to be just right--neither dry nor gummy. Sweet Mandy B's also features a cupcake of the month. September's flavor is cotton candy. The pink frosting is more pastel than garish, which elevates the dessert, and the cake itself is vanilla. I really enjoyed this flavor and the nod to nostalgia. The ratio of cake to frosting is right on the money as well. This is the closest Sweet Mandy B's location to me, and it has been open as of this writing for about a year. I got the classic chocolate fudge brownie. It was nice and soft, not really chewy or hard. A really good consistency and not very sweet. To be honest, I didn't think there was anything that was very special about it because it tasted like a normal brownie. Maybe I needed to try something else. The cupcake was good, but the cake was dry, so without the cream cheese frosting, it would have been garbage. I ordered a peanut butter chocolate cupcake and a sprinkle rice crispy. The rice crispy was huge and very good. The marshmallow ratio was perfect! The cupcake is perfectly balanced with a chocolate cake and a peanut butter buttercream. Sweet Mandy B's in Streeterville is finally here! They are located right next to Lyfe Kitchen in the Northwestern hospital Lavin building. I had heard great things about their desserts so I stopped by and bought 4 of their cupcakes as soon as I saw the open sign. Each one cost $3.50, which I thought was a bit steep but we are in Streeterville after all. I think their tagline of "old fashioned desserts" fits well. The cupcakes are no frills, very sweet cake with very sweet buttercream. They are decorated simply with a round pat of buttercream on top of the cake. The flavors were on the subtle side. I was a bit underwhelmed but I can see how they might appeal to others with a stronger sweet tooth than I. Out of the 4 cupcakes I got (lemon, strawberry milk, snickerdoodle, banana), I liked banana the most. Probably because it tasted like banana bread which is one of my favorite baked goods. Overall I think Sweet Mandy B's is a nice addition to the Northwestern campus food options. Just not for me. read more
