I didn't quite understand her explanation, so I asked again "not trying to be annoying" , just genuinely trying to figure it out because it was my first time trying that food, and she got visibly frustrated. That kind of put a damper on the experience. The food itself was actually really good, so no complaints there. But if the servers don't want to explain things in detail, my suggestion is to clearly label on the menu where each dish is from. That way, people like me who are new to the cuisine and curious to try it don't have to feel awkward or like we're bothering anyone just for asking questions. Would you eat Thai food in an area with few Asians? Came down to visit my wife's cousin in San Jose's predominately white Willow Glen. Cousin, who is white, recommended this place for take out. The $16 Tea leaf salad didn't seem to go together, as the fish sauce made the dish too salty, and the tea nor the tea leaves didn't contribute much flavor to the dish full of tomatoes and sesame seeds amid the iceberg lettuce. Way too overpriced for a salad with no meat The $19 eggplant shrimp w garlic sauce best dish we ordered with eight good size shrimp amid eggplant soaked in garlic sauce. A little on the sweet side. The $16 mango chicken needed more onions and bell peppers to soak up some of the super sweet mango sauce, which overwhelmed the chicken flavor. And we ordered the spicy version which was not spicy, catering to the overwhelmingly white patrons. Sweet Mango has been on my bookmarks for a while after being recommended this restaurant. With some of my SoCal friends visiting, I decided that now was a great time to bring them here and introduce them to Burmese cuisine. We showed up right at opening on a Saturday. The restaurant wasn't busy, and we received very attentive service as one of the first patrons who arrived that day. We decided to dine Family Style and ordered 3 dishes to share: Tea Leaf Salad, Mango Chicken, and Pineapple Fried Rice. The Tea Leaf Salad was incredibly refreshing and light. The dressing didn't have a strong tea flavor to it - more so you could taste the herbs and spices that were in the dressing. The Mango Chicken surprisingly wasn't sweet at all. There was some degree of sweetness because of the integration of mango but it wasn't overly sweet - the mango was more of a flavor enhancement (but the mango didn't overwhelm the flavor)! Lastly the Pineapple Fried Rice was full of flavor as well. I've had fried rice in the past that's been overly oily, but it was not the case here. This fried rice was unique in that there was a ton of toppings integrated into it, including pineapple chunks, peanuts, and raisins. My friend wasn't a fan of the raisins, but I'm the type of person who will eat everything and anything - and it was delicious! One thing that did catch my eye is that their lunch specials are not limited to weekdays only - they also offer lunch specials on Saturdays! Talk about a hidden gem, Sweet Mango at 1040 Willow St, San Jose, CA 95125 is definitely one of them. I heard about this place from a friend, who had heard good things about it. Why not try it I say? So my luncheon troop and I decide to visit it on a Sunday. It is an older stand alone restaurant with its own parking. The inside is also older looking but very well maintained and clean. We were greeted by a very nice young lady who led us to a good sized table that had really attractive China plates set up on it. We had Tom Kha Soup with Chicken, Pad Thai, Pineapple Veggie Fried Rice (served in a cut Pineapple), Pumpkin Chicken, and my favorite desserts Sticky Rice/Mango and Panko Fried Banana. Everything was hot and fresh, like it had just been made. I especially liked the fact we could customize each dish. The menu is huge with a great selection of Thai and Burmese dishes. This food is outstanding and we all enjoyed it. Service was excellent! I got the impression this was family run because everyone working there seemed to really care about our dining experience. Probably an old restaurant so there's this stuffy smell of aged grease inside. Service was nice and they mixed the tea leaf salad for us and also packed our left overs. The water tasted a bit bitter but we were told they put lime in it. Mm, we put limes and lemons in our water too but they taste differently. We tried read leaf salad, which is ok for me. Hubby thinks it's too oily even though we checked and they said they put in salad oil only. The fish chowder and coconut chicken soup look similar when they were brought on the table but they tasted differently. I think the Burma Taste in Sunnyvale has better fish chowder. Super cute hidden gem! Very homey vibes. Came in around 8:50pm because I was craving hot & sour soup. Did not disappoint. There were a lot of family parties which made it feel like you're home. Immediately being seated, I admired their flower themed serving platters. Sooo cute! There was hair in my water but the worker changed it for me promptly. The hot and sour soup was delicious and perfect for the cold weather. I love how the worker personally served us the soup in our bowls. We also ordered Pad Kee Mao (Mix; no beef) VERY TASTY AS WELL. Normally, I need my pad kee mao to be super spicy but this one was delectable without the need of extra spice! Hi guys. It's Bob S. here. I came in with my wife and two grandkids. Although the food was splendid, my experience of this restaurant went South when I went to pay the bill. My wife and I are trying to teach our grandchildren responsibility with their money, so we were trying to split the bill 4 ways. However, the lady working said that splitting the bill 4 ways was not possible (even though I have done so at a lunch with my pals in the past). Secondly, when I accepted that we could only split the bill and began to pay, the lady at the front looked over my shoulder to make sure that I was tipping well. My granddaughter, still a young individual, forgot the tip at first. The lady at the front asked her, "are you forgetting anything?" Coming to Sweet Mango feels like going to your Chinese neighbor's house for a home-cooked meal and great company. The location even looks like a little home in Willow Glen, with a cozy dining room (never a wait, but always a brisk takeout business). The service here has never been anything less than excellent - everyone is kind, helpful, and attentive. They always take our dietary considerations into account and provide suggestions or helpful substitutions (eg sweet and sour sauce instead of a non-veg curry dipping sauce for the roti). It wouldn't be 5 stars without too-notch food, and that's what we've gotten here on every visit. We love the noodle dishes (they explained to us that the noodles are all freshly made, not dried), Thai curries, eggplant with basil sauce, roti (soooo flaky), tofu lettuce wraps, spring rolls (actually fresh and delicious rather than the premade frozen ones that are mushy and flavorless inside), fried rice...the list goes on. Wow I am shocked I haven't come here sooner, considering how close they are to downtown Willow Glen. Was craving tea leaf salad and saw they were nearby, ordered both the salad and Pad Thai to go and this is arguably the best quality meal I've tasted/seen, especially in the takeout setting. The Pad Thai is flavorful, which you can tell by the rich color. Other places sometimes the Pad Thai is pale, but this one is rich in color and the taste speaks for it. The tofu also has the perfect crisp which is just my type. Hard to find!! Salad was fresh and absolutely delicious. The prices were on point and the proportions are pretty large, I will definitely have leftovers! Parking was easy for downtown, it has its own lot right by street. A very sad excuse for a Pad See Ew... I ordered it with chicken (which was tender), but the portions were so strange! There was A LOT of egg and noodles, but very little broccoli and chicken. I explicitly asked the waitress for "light oil" since this dish tends to be on the oily side... and to my surprise... they served it to me GLISTENING in a big puddle of oil. I was shocked! The entire dish just tasted like OIL. There was very little soy sauce flavor too. It was actually very bland and overwhelmingly greasy. It was a struggle to finish eating this... I hate to write this review since I am normally a big supporter of locally-owned Thai restaurants, but I really did not enjoy this dish and I hope they will make it less oily in the future. Quaint little casual Asian spot serving a mixture of Burmese, Thai, and Chinese fare. Although the service was pretty good, the dishes we got didn't quite hit the spot and often felt like they were missing elements despite a good base. I can still recommend folks give it a try to see if their flavors work better for them than me, but I personally had difficulty enjoying the food. Parking is reasonably straightforward with a private lot attached to the restaurant. Seating availability is interior only with a fairly minimal, but clean décor. It's clear they have a contingent of regulars as they were quite warmly welcoming of returning customers, so I'd believe it that people are treated well here. We weren't really sure what to make of the varied menu so we settled on a Tea Leaf Salad, Mango Chicken (not spicy), and a Five-Spice Popcorn chicken. Unfortunately, they were mostly misses. ==Tea Leaf Salad== Although the flavors were mostly true to tea leaf salads I've had in the past in terms of composition, they all seemed to lack a lot of the intensity I'd expect and so the overall dish fell a bit flat. The fish sauce tasted a bit watery and the tea-leaf/nuts/fried garlic didn't really taste very strongly. Enjoyable, but slightly disappointing. ==Mango Chicken== On the whole this was a very nicely tender dish on both the chicken and the mango, and as far as mouth-feel goes this was pretty spot on. For all halal foodies, the meat at sweet mango is halal as per verbal assurance from the restaurant. We were going to Willow Street pizza but the wait time there was an hour on a Friday night so we decided to look for alternatives. Sweet mango was right next to it, and seeing Burmese options on their menu, i called to check if they were halal, and was pleasantly surprised to hear yes! Rating based on food only! We got the Pad Thai and Red Curry Chicken. So far, it's my favorite Thai restaurant! The flavor is very low-key, in a good way! The shrimp was huge too! There were only two pieces, but it didn't feel like a little since they were so big and juicy. Again, not salty or fishy-smelling. One big problem was the water. It was lemon water, which I don't like, but it tastes like rag water + lemon. There were also lemon seeds in it... I kept naturally reaching over for the water to drink, but I remembered how it tastes and didn't. So, be prepared to quench your thirst outside this place. Not sure why Michelin hasn't discovered Sweet Mango, but their loss is our gain. The Willow Glen restaurant is now owned by Rachel and her family and most often it is Rachel who greets you at the door and her sons are the servers. (After a few visits, don't be surprised if Rachel remembers your name, where you like to sit and what your favorite foods are.) The staff is wonderful, but it's the food that brings me back over and over. The roots are Chinese/Burmese and the end dishes actually create cravings. For first timers, I always suggest the Tea Leaf Salad. It's a blend of Burmese tea leaves, chopped tomatoes, peanuts, sesame seeds, lettuce and a mix of fried garlic, onion and split peas. You can have the salad presented unmixed to see all the separate ingredients, or let them serve it mixed. The end is a medley of pleasurable flavors. After that, it depends on individual taste. I adore the Salt and Pepper Fish and they kindly accommodate my dislike of spicy peppers by leaving them out. I also love the Fried Tangerine Beef, although it's actually canned Mandarin orange slices on the side over a bed of crispy rice noodles. My husband prefers the Pad Thai mix of noodles with chicken, shrimp, tofu, bean sprouts, fried egg bits and crushed peanuts to regular white rice and I can't argue. Friends swear a visit is incomplete without the Dry-Sauteed String Beans. Portions are generous and almost every visit I leave with leftovers for a second meal at home. We ordered takeout for Christmas Day, and it is a good thing we ordered early because; although when I called, I was told they were open until 7:30 on Christmas Day, when we arrived at 4:30pm, they told someone on the phone that they had stopped taking orders for the day. The biggest disappoint for me was the palata bread with curry sauce because it tasted just okay...not nearly as good as several other Burmese restaurants we have tried lately. The rest of the food was fine, except I did not care for the tea leaf salad, which I tried for the first time. The four stars are because most in my group were satisfied with the food.
