Took a road trip for Pi day to Sweetielicious today from Grand Rapids for pie!!!!! Worth every mile; worth driving farther. Easy parking, cute town, adorable bakery. I know from past experience the cafe food is also fantastic. I have a particular fondness for the chicken salad. But today was for pie!!!!! We reserved a Pi day sampler selection, and it is a thing of beauty!!!!!! Really well run pick up too!!! They were sold out in advance, but they had organized so well that pick up was a breeze, we had our own line. Husband couldn't resist hopping into the counter line as well for some snickerdoodles. It won all those pie awards for a reason! We drove out of our way home from lansing to stop here and it was ll worth it. It's sort of a rushed, chaotic atmosphere if you're eating there, but that's not why you am e so don't let it bother you. What a treat! The sandwiches. The pies. The cookies. The staff. The owner. The charming retro decor. From the moment we entered this delightful bakery, we were treated like family - warmly welcomed by the staff and the owner, Linda Hundt, who then introduced us to her "Mommy," who also was visiting. Our sandwiches were served on freshly baked bread with a side of potato chips accompanied by green onion dip. We tried a slice of coconut cream pie - rich, velvety coconut filling topped with luscious cream and toasted coconut in a perfect, crumbly crust. Linda brought a warm-from-the-oven experimental cookie for us to sample. She thought it hadn't risen enough to meet her standards of sweet perfection, but the taste - oh, my. We can't wait to return to try this new treat when it is perfected. We purchased a few other cookies and a gluten-free almond macaroon to take with us - each better than the other. Before departing, our new friend Linda autographed a copy of her cookbook. Be sure to get your copy. My aunt brings pies from Sweetie Pie to every family gathering. I have never tasted anything like them before. Always a fresh, homemade, right-outta-the-oven feel, look and taste. Last night we were lucky enough to have 3 of these hip hugging pies at our family dinner, and I literally just stood in my kitchen and ate the leftover Lemon-Pecan (OMG!) for breakfast. Oops. I might have had a little bit of the Key-lime raspberry as well.... its fruit, right?? I never have enough room on my plate for ice cream when I have a slice of these pies, but I can imagine the party in my mouth that would take place. read more

Sweetie-Licious Pie Pantry has won the National Pie Championship three years in a row. When I heard about them, I knew I had to try them. They have sandwiches, coffee, muffins, and other things of that nature in addition to pie. I had an egg salad sandwich that was pretty tasty, but nothing to blow a person's mind. The pie, on the other hand, was just phenomenal. I got there right before the closed on a Saturday. The only pie slices they had left were key lime. I had a slice of that and it was just out of this world. The crumb crust had a fantastic flavor and texture. I'm going to head back soon to try some of their other pie options. I have to update my review based on the ease I was able to get an unexpected last minute whole pie here recently. The woman on the phone was extremely helpful and professional and gave some great suggestions for a non-fruit pie. Her customer service skills went a long way with me and contribute mostly to my higher rating. I opted for the vanilla chocolate combination pie. The pie was good, but a bit too decadent for my taste, not being a whipped cream lover (it was everywhere!). Only a few miles off the highway, and worth a stop as you drive by. The atmosphere is either kitschy or will make you puke, depending on your attitude; what matters is that this is GOOD FOOD. Great sandwiches with locally grown heirloom tomatoes, interesting side dishes, and of course pie to die for. Some of the flavors are interesting experiments that may be a little off the mark (blueberry basil?), but the basics are just excellent examples of what a pie should be. It had the perfect filling to crust ratio and wasn't too sour like some berry pies can be. I also had a snickerdoodle cookie which tasted like butter rolled in sugar - in a good way. My dining companion tried a lemon raspberry cupcake and a whoopie pie, both of which seemed to elicit unfiltered delight. If you come here, it's a good idea to bring someone to share these eats with because you're going to want to try one of everything and you'll just make yourself sick. My girlfriend and I did just that. We had Irish Potato Soup with Irish Soda Bread, two things I had never had. Very interesting flavors, and quite appropriate for St. Patrick's Day. Next, we split a chicken salad sandwich and a turkey sandwich which had cranberry sauce and honey-mustard mayo on it. Another interesting combination of flavors I hadn't tried before. Sandwiches come with a bag of chips, Bugles (witch fingers!), or a bagel... I think. Now, we didn't leave this place without taking a few desserts to go. You don't go to a place called Sweetie-Licious and just order soup and sandwiches. We had a Whoopie Pie, a Cherry Cherry Key Lime muffin with big chunks of fresh cherries and a subtle key lime taste, and a Cherry Lemon Bomb. My favorite was the Cherry Lemon Bomb which is a cross-breed of a cookie and a muffin top. That alone could start up a "Top Of The Muffin To You!" shop. read more

This bakery rose to the occasion and saved the day. I don't live in DeWitt and not even in the state of Michigan, but I was able to contact the owner to arrange for a variety of cupcakes to be made for a friend's birthday. Everything was on-time and went according to plan. I paid in advance and my friend was able to stop by the bakery and pickup her present. Although I personally did not get to consume any of the cupcakes, my friend emphasized how good they tasted (after the fact, I learned that my friend actually goes to this bakery regularly). read more
