When I need ice cream, this is my joint. Tucked into a small corner of a strip mall (best food in America is always in a strip mall it seems) is Sweetlee's Ice Cream shop. Taste testing is fun for the new flavors. I had two taste tests that made me change my regular, which is 2 scoop sundae with 2 of the coconut ice cream, vegan with hot fudge and PB sauce (you get two toppings with sundaes). But, the taste test won the trophy for excellence today. I forgot to photograph the sundae and the staff glady made samples to photograph. So, the photo with 2 spoons; left Apple Crisp, right is Sweet Potato ice creams. So the sundae was Sweet Potato on bottom, Apple Crisp on top with Bumble Berry (whatever berries they can source) sauce and peanuts on as my 2 toppings. The Apple Crisp was full of a crisp's goodness in the topping. Balanced with the creamy ice cream that didn't overpower the crisp feel. With toppings mostly eaten here on this top scoop-- would make an excellent one scoop sundae. But, then came the Sweet Potato. Note I really don't like Sweet Potato Casserole at Thanksgiving with the candied tubers in syrup. They're already sweet, just put mine in foil and toss on the oven somewhere you need space between things. Butter and salt and pepper. Today was different, creamy homemade light ice cream with sweet potato barely folded in so you can see the layers on your spoon, then comes nuts and mini marshmallows- just melt in your mouth good. I want this at my Thanksgiving party this year! Go to Sweetlee's, they make it all, I've included the menu. Two locations. I usually am near West Olympia so frequent there. Best friendly staff, clean, plenty of little tables to eat there. Pints and quarts to go. Homemade. What more do you need, but a bamboo spoon? My first visit. This got a big recommendation from the eye doctor so after that appointment, up the street I went. And a great recommendation it was! I had the 2X vanilla ice cream. Very vanilla-y! Super smooth and creamy. Rich in fact. I can tell there are no stabilizers in the ice cream as it melted sort of fast, as one might expect from a hand made/small batch ice cream. A great ice cream find right inside the Tumwater Craft District. It was a very hot day and after some errand running, we were ready to cool off. We had heard about Sweetlee's and went there to have a cone. It was really good! The first I have to say is that they have the absolute BEST waffle cones I've had ... and that's all I get when going to an ice cream place. Thicker, crispy, crunchy, and vanilla-like flavor. Soooo good. As for the ice cream itself, equally good. One of our boys had Vanilla and he liked it. The other boy had Mint Chocolate Chip and he pretty much ate it all. I had the Chocolate Cookie Surprise (Chocolate ice cream with Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chip, and Snickerdoodle cookies). Amazing! My wife had the Blaze Cookie Blast (Cookie Dough ice cream with Oreos). Again, amazing! Very nice and kind service, reasonably priced, and in a comfortable environment. Sweetlee's sat on the row of vendors like it had always been there, even if it hadn't. There was a line out the door, but no one minded. People talked soft. Kids laughed. And somewhere, something smelled like sugar and waffles. The guy behind the counter smiled like he meant it. The kind of smile that doesn't try too hard, just happens because he's not tired of people yet. He asked what I wanted like there was time to think about it. And I believed him. He let the kids taste everything without rushing them. The waffle cone was warm and crisp, made right there behind the glass, steam rising like a promise. It cracked clean when you bit into it, no sag--just a chewy crunch and sweet. The ice cream sat heavy inside it, full of real things. Strawberries that still had shape, like they remembered where they came from. Nothing was fake. It didn't have to be. And eating it, I remembered a summer long ago--bare feet on hot pavement, chasing a ball we'd never catch, and my mother's voice calling from the porch with something cold in her hand. It wasn't the taste I remembered, not exactly. It was the feeling. That something so small could stop the whole day, slow it down, and make you glad just to be alive with your mouth full of something sweet. Sweetlee's had that magic. This place is nestled in an awesome food and small shopping hall. We decided for ice cream after dinner, they do offer samples. The two girls who served us were thankfully very patient with our group. I tried the salted cookies and cream, peanut butter adventureful, chocolate caramel cheesecake and the lemon jam crumble. Ultimately landed on the lemon jam crumble in a waffle cone. I loved the waffle cone, it is very thin in the best way possible. I did appreciate the crumble pieces in the ice cream, it was a nice surprise. However this isn't my typical ice cream preference. All the flavors are VERY light in my opinion like almost nonexistent. When I tried Sweetlee's for the first time they were still selling out of the truck some time ago. It was Vanilla Ice Cream and it was so good! Since then I returned quite a few times and for some reason the quality and taste are no longer as good, as rich, as flavorful. I am not sure if anything changed in the recipes. This time hubby and I got salted cookies and cream, 2x vanilla and lemon crumble. I found salted cookies and cream way too salty this time. This is the only flavor of theirs that I go for. Other flavors don't taste balanced to me. 2x Vanilla barely had any Vanilla flavor, tasted just bland. I use vanilla sticks in cooking often, so I am familiar with that flavor. My husband didn't care for the flavors either. He ate a little and tossed the rest. I also wish that the staff was a bit more welcoming. I am not talking about an excessive, inauthentic niceness, but a little bit of warmth would have been so much more welcoming than "I couldn't care less" expression. And I get it....customers are often rude and careless themselves too, but still I feel it's important in retail. read more

Awe this place is so cute! This location is inside of The Craft in Tumwater. And I must say I really enjoy this sweet spot! The ice cream flavors are unique which is great for picky people like ME lol I lean more towards the vegan options and babes they do not disappoint. Today I had the spiced apple cider sorbet! It was fresh just enough spice to not over power just a kiss of sweetness. This flavor is guilt free and dairy free! This flavor should be offered in the Fall as well. We stopped by on a ridiculously hot day and were greeted by air conditioning and friendly staff. The ice cream is delicious and made with local ingredients and you can really tell the difference versus coldstone or baskin robins. They have a vegan section with a variety of flavors. Natalie was able to answer all of our allergen questions and even pulled out the allergy list to ensure us of the ingredients. While we sat and had our ice cream. we watched Natalie help several other groups of people and was super friendly, kind, and helpful. This is the ice cream Olympia has been waiting YEARS for. This is gourmet, handmade, high quality Icecream using local ingredients (Batdord Bronson coffee, Spooners berrys, etc). They have very tantalizing flavors chock full of goodies. There portions are fair for the price. They offer homemade waffle cones or cups. The waffle cones are fresh and delicious. Here's my point of view on food trucks. Most are what chain restaurants USED to be before getting caught in the machine and dumped out of a mold. I'm a NY native from Rochester, NY. We had Abbots there for quaint friendly ice cream, NOT in a million locations. Now I have SweetLee's in Olympia! I'm dairy free, my body made my choice for me, but I support vegan over all due to ethical concerns. I've never had vegan ice cream like theirs locally. Salt and Straw is my closest comparison, but I'm NOT going to Seattle or Lake Oswego OR for ice cream! My review is solely for the Vegan options. I'm fortunate that I started going to SweetLee in the summer, so I was treated to both their Strawberry and Rasberry sorbet, which had a unique creaminess no other sorbets I've had has matched. BEST PART IS Spooners berry farm is their berry source. Local support x2, and I love that! Their concoctions are all unique and the smaller production runs mean quality is THE FOCUS. Plus, the staff working the truck are an absolute joy! Olympia needs more Bright spots, culinary and other wise. SweetLee stands out as a bright spot on MY map! Went to the new location in the Tumwater Craft District. A very nice young man was helping us and as he was doing so, his manager (supervisor or owner) began asking him questions about what I assume his job duties entailed (nothing seemed that detrimental by the way). She continued to not only chastise him for how he should be doing things differently , but she did so in front of my husband and me. This kid was maybe 16 years old and with the establishment being new we understand there will be a learning curve. Maybe next time wait until your customers are not in the process of being helped and speak to him privately and like he's a person. This kid was so sweet and kind, we felt bad for him.
