I went here with my husband because I love little local coffee shops but it was a big disappointment. We dont get out much without the kids and were excited to sit down and have coffee together. We ordered our coffee and the women was so rude, had the most sour face. It was like we were and annoying her. Then she started talking to other customers about how they should never buy a coffee shop and shes broke.....So unprofessional. We took our coffee to go and left never to come back. read more

I go here whenever I have the chance. The coffee is consistently good. There are so many options for food and treats including gluten free and healthy options. Today was my last day of PT at Holden Physical Therapy and I decided to try Sweets 'n Java next door. Immediately upon entering I heard great music and smelled deliciousness everywhere. The chalkboard menu offered lots of choices from egg sandwiches, scones, soups and tempting seasonal lattes. As I frequent Starbucks and always get the blueberry scones I thought I would see if theirs would measure up. I also ordered a small coffee with a shot of dark chocolate. I have to admit the scone was "way better" as it was filled with blueberries and obviously freshly made from scratch unlike what I was accustomed to at Starbucks. The coffee was perfect! This place is outstanding - and now looks as amazing as it's food tastes thanks to local artist/carpentry firm, Boxwoods. Hannah and Kathy are always coming up with new coffee and food creations.. and they never cease to impress! Erica and I go in at least a couple times a week for our fill of delicious lattes in as many flavors as you can imagine. They even offer an assortment of non dairy milks and creamers for all the vegetarians and vegans. Menu highlights include the Mediterranean flat bread, the quinoa salad, the chick pea salad, black bean soup, and their world famous almond biscotti. And of course, the homemade pies, cakes, muffins, and pastries are crowd favorites! This little place has it all. Whether you just want a quick latte to go or you want to sit down with friends and enjoy a nice lunch on cozy couches - Sweets and Java is for you. Plenty of parking. Plenty of seating space and a very relaxed atmosphere. I would highly recommend this place as one of the coolest and most delicious coffee shop cafes in the area. Five big stars! read more

I was at once greeted by the new proprietor, Kathy, who made me feel like I had just walked into her kitchen. Reminiscent of so many trendy coffee shops in Newport, Sweets & Java has the cozy ambiance you are looking for when you want a cappuccino and a muffin or a steaming bowl of soup and sandwich with your afternoon tea. Comfy chairs and red walls invite you to linger. But the best part about Sweets & Java, among its many diverse and gluten-free offerings, is quite simply the best muffin I have eaten in a good 40 years. The morning glory muffins may be good for you but they are bursting with raisins, coconut, carrots, and walnuts; the muffin is so moist and flavorful...nothing like the plastic hockey pucks they sell at those imitation bakeries. Comfortable, clean, nice place for a coffee. That said, I found the cafe latte mediocre. The latte was so hot it burned my mouth. The server was very nice and offered to make me a new one, which was slightly less hot, though it burned the roof of my mouth too. I tried a scone and it was okay, not great.
