Good overpriced fancy coffees, they do make a good espresso. This is a really nice space, good for working or just having a coffee with a friend or spouse or a spouse who is your friend. Unlike other coffee joints that aren't Vietnamese, they make a good French ice coffee. I don't like how they only have disposable cups, but they will put coffee into your coffee cup if you bring one in. read more

I've popped into this café multiple times but this is the first time in while school's out so the vibe was low key and relaxed. Music played quietly in the background. The only sounds emanated from the burr of the coffee grinder, the swishing of milk being frothed, and the clank of a spoon. The small tables towards the front of this large cafe were half full; people were absorbed in the screens and the occasion book and sadly, not each other. I perched at the large communal table at the back as I people watched. I like the amount of daylight streaming from the wall of windows along one side of this spacious café. There is a large refrigerated case in the middle of the space filled with sandwiches and eye-catching, mouthwatering treats. I saw a multi-layer chocolate cake, cupcakes with mounds of cream, lemon bars, chocolate chip studded bars, colorful macarons, scones, and an appetizing apple pie. Service was lovely. When I ordered the lemon bar, the counterperson even asked whether I wanted a piece from the side or one from the center. That is catering to preferences! The lemon bar itself had a thin shortbread crust and a creamy lemon curd. It was both tart and sweet, exactly as I had wanted. read more

I honestly forget how much I love a Sweetwaters latte! Their triple shot ice lattes are also my go to when I need that caffeine hit! They give the best caffeine highs . I love how each location kind of has its own vibe in terms of the space and it's customers. My friend pointed out that this location skews more towards a grad student and professor-y vibe and I cannot unsee it! I was visiting Ann Arbor with some friends and stopped here for a quick coffee. As soon as I walked in my attention was immediately drawn to the beautiful artwork all over the walls. The place is very big with lots of seating. I only got a coffee but they had a big variety of pastries. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and they offered some great suggestions for drinks. The menu has interesting out of the box drinks as well. Overall a great experience and will definitely be back for more. read more

Relaxing place to visit for a bite and a sip. It's generally quiet with people working and reading. Occasionally chatting but nothing too much. It can be busy but there is plenty of space. I would appreciate foot stools that go with the comfy chairs, to read and relax. The people behind the counters are fast and friendly. There are plenty of outlets dotted around the seating areas, where I found most were in use. My visit was last week. I ordered a cold brew from the case. If you don't want it opened and over ice, tell them. It was a surprise but they said it was same 16oz bottle, with 4 oz of ice, in a 20oz cup. I didn't see them pull it from the case or open it, so I am not sure if it was the same thing, but oh well. I typically get the 16 oz bottle but ration it out over the day. Nice initiative but they should have asked me beforehand. The brew is good. I would recommend it. I would recommend the tea, more. Sweetwaters carries baked goods from Avalon and Sweet Street. There is better coffee elsewhere, but the tea is best at Sweetwaters. There is a small selection of cold lunch options. Convenient location on Washington and Ashley. read more

I wish I lived in Ann Arbor so I could come here every day to try a new drink - the menu here is AMAZING. I'm from Houston; we have no shortage of coffee places, but nothing there is quite like Sweetwaters. The coffees on offer here are carefully crafted, delicious cups of heaven that just spark pure joy when you drink them. Not to mention, the industrial interior with beautiful chalk drawings at this location is exactly what I think of when I think of a local coffee place. Plus, they have a fairy door! I don't really know what that means, but it exists and its cute! While at this location I had the caramel apple chai-der (chai and cider mixed with whipped cream and caramel drizzle) and the caramel ice dragon. Two very different tastes, but two amazing drinks! It pains me to say that the espresso drinks here have sunk deeply in a mire of infinitely better local options, namely The Espresso Café. I was looking forward to a nostalgic blast when I got a matcha green tea latte, and suffice it to say it looked nothing like the picture on the menu behind the bar. It didn't taste especially good either. I gave them another chance because there was a time, probably before they expanded too much, where Wei and Joan supervised closely. I cannot see how that is possible now with at least five stores I know of scattered about town. 3 stars for the drinks, and 4.5 stars for the study and chill friendly atmosphere that thankfully still remains. Unfortunately, my past loyalty no longer remains. Hopefully they'll step up the game again because a New York Times article from 1997 proclaiming their greatness is no longer valid. read more

I've never had a particularly stellar visit to Sweetwaters. I do like it a bit more than Starbucks, but only because of the food choices. The coffee quality is about the same. I've liked the coffee drinks with condensed milk. I like that they offer this as something different from other coffee places. I came here for a fundraiser. Apparently the waffle bar is a new addition. It's $6.95 for two waffles and $0.95 for each topping. Honestly, I don't think it's fair to charge $0.95 for whipped cream. The other toppings to choose from were nutella, banana, and jams. These were very expensive waffles but I did enjoy it. Sweetwaters has a great seating area, perfect for studying or meeting up with people. It definitely can get busy over the weekends or during finals. read more

I'm a mobile worker and Sweetwaters is one of my favorite places to work. Lovely seating outside if you want some fresh air (not much of it, but it's there) and LOADS of seating inside if you need a plug or need some shelter. Admittedly I usually opt for the iced tea here rather than a coffee so I'm not entirely sure how the coffee stacks up to other joints in town but I do like the iced tea. They have a few different varieties including some non-caffeinated varieties which is helpful when I'm already jacked up for the day! Tasty sweets on display if you want a little treat, free wifi, quiet space, plenty of parking near by in the lot kitty corner, great people watching outside if you're by a window. Yes. I've walked past this place more times than I can remember, and never gave a second thought. It looks way too small from outside on Ashley Street, and I expected the drinks to be as bland as the name. Happened in here, because I was on that side of town this week, and it was the closest place to get a cup. The Midnight blend is my new coffee of choice. It's difficult to get a dark roast that is dark enough and not bitter. By comparison, the other two coffee shops I've been going to taste a little too bitter and a little too watery by comparison. The Midnight is definitely the darkest blend in town, but it doesn't suffer from bitterness at all. Sweetwater isn't as crowded as it looks through the windows. There's another room on the other side of the bar. The decor is a bit to corporate and buttoned-down--it's like they wanted to imitate Starbucks--but you can always get your coffee to go, like I did. read more

That being said, the amount of outlets at this location are quite slim so get your spot early. What's nice is that they offer salads, sandwiches and pastries too for those of you who get hungry. -Cacao Cappuccino: it's fine enough. Good mix of coffee and chocolate but it just doesn't have the quality other coffee shops in the area have. I went here to meet up with a group but no luck there. it must have gotten canceled. It is located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. The parking can be tight on the streets so a parking lot or structure may be required. I was lucky enough to find an open spot at no charge since it was Sunday. The place is hopping with people either in groups and mostly on computers doing homework or taking care of business. There is a wide array of drinks to select from. Various coffees, lattes, espressos and caramel specials which are my favorite. I opted for the Latte Cream which was delicious. There are also tasty looking pastries available to purchase. I opted for the chocolate donut which was just ok. They are not competing to be your favorite donut shop of course. The donut was kind of doughy. The wait staff were friendly and quick to respond. THAI TEA! So good and refreshing on a hot day! One strange thing I noticed (or maybe it's just me) was that their menu is not behind the counter like most cafes/restaurants/shops, but rather, their menu is on the wall facing where the cashier stands, not facing where the customers order. I hope this makes sense as I've written it, because it didn't make much sense to me as it was done in the store. Anyway, this threw me for a bit of a curveball, since I spent a good couple minutes trying to figure out where the coffee menu was (good thing there was a line and I had time to figure it out). No one else seemed to have a problem figuring this out though, so either they were all locals, or I'm just an idiot. Either way, I thought it might be an interesting thing to point out for those that might visit this place for coffee or tea from out of town. Inside Sweetwaters, they also have a bunch of tables that I saw a lot of individuals studying on. Outlets looked abundant for those that might want to stop and relax here for awhile on their laptops. For those who decide to look for fairy doors, they have a very cute fairy door in this cafe. Inside the windows, you can see little coffee cups. On a summer's day though, I definitely, definitely recommend the THAI ICED TEA! Best thai iced tea ever. The coffee is excellent--strong but not bitter. Tea is pretty dang good, too. If the tea of the day is cinnamon or jasmine, you're in for a treat (I don't like the "fresh" tea as well--you become responsible for steeping it correctly, which is too much for me). I used to come study here in grad school. They'd let me stay all day without bothering me. In exchange, I'd make a purchase every 2-3 hours. This is how I learned that the Big Apple pie is excellent (stick it in their microwave near the sugar for about 45 seconds to get it hot and gooey) and their chocolate pudding cake is to DIE for. I also highly, highly recommend the donuts from Washtenaw Dairy. At less than $1 each, this is an affordable and relatively small treat for your afternoon slump. I usually get Sweetwater's to go these days. They keep the line moving in the morning, and the great baristas like Mike will remember what you like to order if you're a regular. By the way, if you have a Go Pass, you get a 10% discount on your Sweetwater's purchase. You can also save by throwing $25 on a gift card; then you get one free drink, and can use the card for all your follow-up visits once you're addicted to the delicious coffee. read more

This sweetwaters has a ton of room - great for studying and working in groups. This specific sweetwaters location also has a Sunday Waffle Bar, which was overpriced but also very tasty. The topping options were syrup, bananas, jams, nutella, and whipped cream - though I think this should be expanded if they really want to consider it a waffle 'bar.' They also have a ton of delicious pastry options of which I hope to try quite a few more. It's also good to know that they will host fundraisers for different organizations (specifically with the waffle bar)! read more

I have to question the integrity of Sweetwaters' management. For years, Sweetwaters had a policy of rounding every transaction to the nearest nickel. That is, if you bought a $3 coffee, the total price, including tax, should have been $3.18. But Sweetwaters rounded the price to $3.20. Their registers did this automatically. The ostensible reason was to relieve staff from having to handle pennies. But Sweetwaters did this on every transaction, including credit and debit card transactions. The company apparently stopped doing this recently, but it now does something similar. I asked for a Midnight Blend coffee, and I was charged a higher price than the menu price for brewed coffee. When I asked why, I was told that there was a surcharge for Midnight Blend. There was no sign that I could see anywhere noting a surcharge. I think that these practices reflect dishonesty and a contempt for customers. I won't go back to a place that treats me like a chump. RESPONSE TO ANDREA'S COMMENT, which follows this review: Andrea asserts that Sweetwaters used a point-of-sale (POS) system that automatically overcharged customers and could not be modified. This assertion reflects precisely the kind of dishonesty and contempt that I originally complained about. Andrea's comment essentially admits that Sweetwaters knew that it was purchasing a POS system that automatically overcharged and that it continued to use such a system for years. It seems ludicrous to suggest, as Amanda does, that, somehow, Sweetwaters was helpless to modify the software for the POS and fix the overcharging problem. And even if the system really could not be modified, Sweetwaters does not offer any reason why it chose and continued to knowingly use a system that deliberately overcharged customers. Thousands of other businesses have managed to find and use POS systems that don't cheat their customers. Sweetwaters could have been one of them, if it had wanted to be. Sweetwaters conduct appears to violate several consumer protection statutes, including among other things, the Michigan Consumer Protection Act and the Shopping Reform and Modernization Act. If these violations are proven and prosecuted, Sweetwaters could be liable for literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in statutory penalties. Nothing about Andrea's comment reassures me about Sweetwaters' business practices. read more

Tried the Mint Julip espresso for the first time! It was a hot day and we wanted something cold and healthy.. Walking by the main street, we discovered a huge coffee shop.. Its pretty decor and outside seating attracted us and we walked in to discover the most unique drinks one can ever imagine.. I got the mint Julip espresso in almond milk! This was so refreshing! I love coffee and I love mint Julip! Go ahead and try this drink, I guess this a limited edition, only for the summers! My friend who recommended this place, likes the Vietnamese coffee here.. Of all the coffee shops in downtown, this is my favorite from an aesthetic standpoint. The shop boasts nice hardwood floors, beautiful old brick walls and a patterned, ceiling. It looks equal parts Williamsburg art gallery and trendy flat. Further augmenting everything are the large ceiling-to-floor windows in the front and sides of the shop. In order to spend any length of time in a coffee shop, I have to be situated near a large window with a view, and these windows peer out at Washington. Unfortunately, it's a mixed-bag after that. Sweetwaters all over A2 and Ypsi have relatively drab, bland food. Their pasta salad is workmanlike, and the quiches are nothing special. The cold blended drinks (Ice Dragons) are good, and their teas are nice (especially those which come in a teapot for you to pour), but nothing else is particularly noteworthy. The lights have been flickering for about an hour, and the place is super drafty in the cold. The bathroom is tight and frequently runs out of soap. I had to ask the barista twice to refill it. It'll keep coming because of how nice the place looks, but it's difficult to recommend anything other than that and the Ice Dragons. read more

I've spent quite a bit of time here the past few months catching up on work, and while I do like the space, it can use a few improvements. The drinks menu is hit or miss with me - I'm not a huge fan of their coffee, nor their dragon's eye drink, but they do have a pretty good tea selection. In terms of atmosphere, they do have quite a large space, with lots of tables - perfect for those of you looking for a place to people watch and get work done. But, they have relatively few electrical outlets. Especially in the back-room area, where it seems like the only plugs exist by the counter. My months-long addiction to Sweetwater's Ginger Fizzes give me no choice but to up it a star. I am a lover of all things ginger, and their super-strong, icy and fizzy fresh ginger ale is like my cure-all tonic. If you haven't tried it, try it now. But I'm warning you, you may end up discovering that you're hooked, coming here at least 2x a week, and frantically looking up recipes for home-made ginger beer online. One of the great things about Ann Arbor are the many places to get really good coffee. Plenty of places offer competent if not great tasting coffee and show obvious craftsmanship in roasting beans. Many cafés also are great gathering spots or "third places" for writing, meeting clients, getting work done or studying. Sweetwaters on Washington and Ashley is such a place. The atmosphere is excellent especially since the remodel. I have been coming here for years now both with my wife who works nearby and to work and write. The coffee is competent. There are enough food items to grab something to eat if your morning coffee extends to lunch or you get a case of the hungries with an afternoon coffee. All in all Sweetwaters could add up to a wonderful experience. Except. Except that the lack of warmth and customer service of the staff is such a detraction. It's apparent it comes from the top down. It's such a downer to get to the counter and be treated not as a regular who has spent many mornings and afternoons there but as a casual and even unwanted customer. It's the indifference the staff communicates that is so frustrating. When I get this from the staff it makes me regret coming. If the atmosphere weren't so good and the location weren't so convenient I would not spend a dime here. Sweetwaters could be the quintessential Ann Arbor coffee house. Until the management and staff actually care about customers it will just be an ok coffee shop with a great location and atmosphere. read more

This was somewhat of a tough call. If there were 2.5 stars, I'd probably give Sweetwaters that. The atmosphere is relatively calming since it's not Starbucks and not near campus so there aren't students holding group meetings here. It is a nice place to study or get some work done, but it's not great for coffee or tea or food for that matter. There isn't a great selection of tea and the food is very expensive for coffeehouse fare. The orange juice is good and so are the bear claws, but you could literally buy a gallon of OJ for the price they charge. Also, you shouldn't expect good service unless you're a regular. Many times I've been rushed through the line just so the baristas could carefully attend to their regulars. While Sweetwaters is busy, this is my favorite coffee shop in Ann Arbor. They know how to make simple coffee and good cup of joe or iced mocha/latte. The space is simple but diverse. High tables, regular tables. Fluffy seats/sofas, bar and stools. Floor to ceiling window area, back corner with no windows. No coffee shop can have enough electrical outlets, but they do well, all things considered. PS - Don't thank me, you were tipped from 3 to 4.
