Tom gai soup is ok but the broth is a little to much like chicken broth versus the traditional flavor i've had. Pad thai is also pretty good. We rarely eat-in here, but Sy Thai is generally our take-out option. Probably because we're too lazy to trek down to May's in Ferndale. We love this restaurant but it's really a case of never-getting-it-quite-right...either they completely forget/disregard a special request (e.g. my husband requesting extra jalapenos on his pepper squid tonight) or general inconsistency (agree with a previous reviewer about the "heat" level being hit or miss) or just plain unprofessional (when my husband called in our to-go order tonight, the hostess was screaming at him over the clanging of pots and pans in the kitchen). If it weren't for the prices they charge for the service they provide, I'd bump this up a star, but I just can't. :-( read more

The place was really busy when we got there but they seated us fast. We got the soup that came with lunch right away but it seemed like forever before we got our actual food. Crab cheese (didn't know crab rangoons were Thai...) were way too fried. I ate the creamy insides and left the hard fried outer parts on my plate. Chicken panang had all the right flavors but lacked the delicious sauce. I love pouring the sauce over my rice and mmmmm eating that but there was barely enough of it to cover the chicken, definitely not enough to pour. I've been going here regularly since 2008 and 1. have never had trouble with food poisoning and 2 have tried over half of the dishes on the new and old menu. I currently live in Chicago and cannot find a thai place that compares to this one. The sauces are great, the noodles are perfectly cooked, the portions are great. I'm not sure if this is a certain type of regional Thai, but I cannot find anything that compares in metro Detroit or Chicago (and I've tried about 20 places in Chicago). Definitely tasty! I alternate between Pad Thai and Kow Pad (fried rice)---both with chicken. If I were to rank them numerically, I would place them somewhere around 88/100 ; so basically a 'B+' . The dishes have always been fresh and flavorful, and spiced accordingly. Portion sizes for dinner are substantial. My absolute favorite item is the crab cheese appetizer! This is outstanding! Went back and ordered Sy's Fried Rice and it was phenomenal. I'd go back only for that dish!

Five stars! The food was delicious and service on a Busy Saturday afternoon was courteous and quick! My s.o. Started off with the tom kha and he loved it. I started off with the Tom yum with chicken and the chicken was so tender and the broth was perfectly sour. We shared beef drunken noodles with the medium spiciness level and oh my goodness!!! It was delicious! They are not messing around with their spiciness! I is definitely Thai spicy levels not American spicy levels. I'm giving our last carryout experience a three, only because my husband likes this restaurant. I think it is just so-so. Our last carry out was not what I expected. I ordered steamed vegetables, peanut sauce on the side, and brown rice. No protein, just vegetables. I picked up the order and drove 20 minutes home. My husband's order was fine. My order was a different story. They gave me white rice, overly salty peanut sauce, and a box of steamed cabbage with a piece of broccoli and a slice of carrot. Not quite what I envisioned. It's probably important to note that I haven't been to Sy Thai since about August of 2008. The fall of '08 seems to be around the time that a lot of reviewers here got sick from their food and apparently the restaurant faced some health violations. The reason I haven't been back to Sy Thai has solely to do with its distance from me but now I'm kind of glad that I haven't been back there, considering what I've read on Yelp. That said, all I can do is review my past experiences with Sy Thai - and those experiences were quite good, hence the 4/5 star rating. To be honest, I haven't even sampled much on the Sy Thai menu. Every time I went there, I would order the Egg Noodles (with tofu). What a treasure trove of flavor and delight that noodle dish is. When it was made just right - not too spicy, but not dripping wet with brown sauce either - it was heavenly to eat. Every time I made the 45 minute trip to Birmingham to sample them, I never regretted it. Most times I went to Sy Thai, the service would either be laid back but attentive or I'd be borderline ignored. I can't really say I was ever treated poorly, though. Oftentimes the place is hopping and it can be difficult to get a booth, but I'd never felt that the wait wasn't worth it. As I said, those Egg Noodles are so...freakin'...good. I've also had the spring rolls as an appetizer and they were among the best I've had, though sometimes they could feel a bit greasy/fried for a spring roll. They do come with a very sweet and zesty sauce you can put on them. Speaking of sweet and zesty, I always thought that Sy Thai was a nice place to take a date. Despite its Birmingham location you never have to deal with too many squirrel-y teenage girls in there. Unlike at some of the restaurants in town, Sy Thai patrons are just looking for good food and conversation - not to hold a Twilight convention. What can I say? Apparently Sy Thai has turned into something of a health crisis, and I'd now think twice about returning there after reading some of the reviews on Yelp. However, based on my experiences from around 2002-2008, I'd have to rate it as one of my favorite Thai places. Then again, I've had food poisoning once in my life and I can wholly sympathize with anyone who has experienced it - so take this recommendation of Sy Thai with a hint of caution. read more

I work right around the corner and we eat lunch here every week. I have to say, not the most consistent with their dishes. 90% of the time they are really good. 10% of the time, they must have a different cook or something because it's really bad. We tend to order the same 4-5 things all the time. It's easy to compare consistency when you have the same thing a lot. Today, one of those really bad days. I ordered the Jub Chai which I normally really like. It's got lots of veggies, bean threads and a mild brown sauce. Today the order was swimming in sauce and the flavor was overpowering of soy and garlic. I couldn't eat it. I had the same experience with the Thai Peanut. All sauce and overly sweet and over powering. We will continue to eat hear because, like I mentioned, they have really good food. Just hope you don't catch them on an off day in the kitchen. My advice to you is when they as you how spicy, do not get "top of the line" spicy, set aside your pride and ego and accept that you cannot handle it. Stopped in for carry out. I would not say I am a thai food aficianado, but I have had my fair share and this was very sub-par for me. I was hoping for more as this place is around the block from me. I had a typical fried rice dish with pineapple and broccoli. It was very fair for me. My wife and I shared some egg rolls and she had a salad with a lemon-esque dressing. I am a big fan of this restaurant. Sy Thai never seems to fail me, every time I go there. I have been to Sy Thai multiple times, and I have to say that my favorite dishes are the the pa nang curry, pad Gai noodles and drunken noodles. They are AMAZING! I like to eat spicy food, so I was very happy with how spicy my dish was. I ordered medium and it was pretty perfect. I do like that they give you spices on the side in case you want to add more to your food. Their Thai iced teas are also amazing and I always order one every time I go. YUM. The best thing about Sy Thai are the portions. THE PORTIONS. You will NOT leave hungry after a meal here, and will probably take home seconds and thirds. Who doesn't love big portions? I usually get carry out from here for lunch. I feel the spice levels are a bit on the low side, I started with Hot which seemed like a bit below where medium should be. Then I stepped it up to Extra Hot which was decent. After going there a third time I asked if there was anything hotter and they gave me "Top of the Line" which is extremely spicy and delicious. As far as the food goes it does taste really good but the Pad Thai Chicken that I ordered did seem very wet and greasy, which made it taste great but I wonder how many more calories are in the food here compared to other Thai restaurants. read more

I was craving some Thai food and had some time to spare after school. Being only 3 minutes from my home, I decided to dine in alone and see what the atmosphere was like, and really enjoy my food in a different space. I loved the interior, very clean and a great place to bring friends and family. Service was well. My server was speedy, friendly and greeted me with a warm smile, ice water and some light tasty shrimp chips. I wanted to have left overs for school so I ordered the Potstickers, Spring Rolls, Tom Kha soup with vegetables and the Shrimp Pad Thai hot. This by far has to be the best Thai I have yet to taste in Michigan. The spring rolls were crisp and very flavorful with the sweet orange plum sauce. The Tom Kha soup was light and sour yet sweet and coconuty at the same time and LOADED with delicious veggies (more than I was expecting). The Pad Thai was just perfect. A lot of Thai restaurants put too much oil and not enough flavor in their noodles, giving an oily-spicy taste. Not Sy Thai... there is so much flavor in the Pad Thai and very very light oil. I found that they also use chili paste and chili flakes to add to their spice, which I think is great. My only complaint was that the garlic soy sauce was too salty for the potstickers, but everything else was great! For all of this food my bill only came out to be about $26. Very very fair prices. After waiting 20 minutes for my appetizer to arrive, it was actually quite good. It was a sliced beef with ginger dish. Presentation was nice and tasted excellent but service was slow. There then was a 40 minute wait for my entree even though the order was placed at the same time as my appitizer. Irritating to say the least. Even putting the slow service aside, it was somewhat busy, I can't set aside under cooked seafood. It dangerous. Raw scallops can make people seriously sick. With an hour to cook them, how were they STILL raw, I don't know. They offered to bring something different but I wasn't willing to wait another 40 minutes. Their solution was to only charge me the chicken price for the dish. Of course it was still entirely inedible. Fuck these guys. This place is Birmingham-overrated. read more

The staff is so friendly and accommodating, complimentary chips served at tables are so good, the menu has tons of options, and I've never had any food from here I didn't like. Love Sy Thai. My husband and I visit here regularly. Usually for carry out. The prices are decent but their portion sizes are very good. My only gripe is the amount of meat they give, especially when we order shrimp. Chicken dishes have a good amount but shrimp, there's like 7/8 in the entire dish. I think that's pretty bad seeing extra is charged for seafood. Other than that this is our favorite Thai. Flavors are very good! We will return... soon! read more

After trying multiple Thai places in the area, this location has by far been the most consistent and delicious. I don't understand some people giving 3 Stars when nothing in their review was negative and saying they had a great waitress etc.?? Doesn't make sense to me. Anyway their crab Rangoon's are some of the best around no doubt with an awesome plum sauce. (I have never found any crab Rangoon's like the ones at New Peking in garden city, BUT finally this place gives them a run for their money!) Their pad Thai is consistently great and their drunken noodle is always very flavorful and not dry. Maybe I've gotten lucky every time I've been there and had great food? Ehh I doubt it. The ambience isn't bad, but it's certainly not a date-night spot like some of the other restaurants in the neighbourhood, so I do carry outs more often than not. First time to this location and it is definitely my last. 1). My Pad Pak instead of creamy brown sauce was pretty much pure soy sauce wow pure salt yum. 2). For $8 lettuce wrap I would love some lettuce not a quarter of a quarter of a $1 head of lettuce didn't even have enough to use for my wraps. 3). Got vegetable curry with "NO SPICE" for my pregnant wife well it's soo hot she can't eat it. Thank you for the wonderful night of $50 for something we truly don't enjoy or can't even eat!
