I met up with my brother who is in town for the auto show. Why he decided to come to Detroit in the middle of winter is beyond me. We and a few others came here for dinner. It's pretty funny though, it's almost like the people of Birmingham haven't seen a group of Asian people before because we were all getting stared at. It's been awhile since that's happened to me. Before we started, they gave us a couple of baskets of shrimp chips aka prawn crackers. These were a little lacking in flavor, but better than nothing. We started off with some appetizers in the form of chicken wings and pepper squid. The chicken wings were good but the Thai chili sauce that came with it was excellent. The pepper squid but was surprisingly mild especially considering it came with jalapenos. We shared pad thai which was good. We tried the drunken noodles which I thought were really salty. I don't know if it was a combination of soy sauce and added salt. Other selections we made were the Sy Thai duck, Panang curry with chicken, and Thai peanut with beef. The Sy Thai duck was ok and was more of a oyster sauce based sauce then curry. My brother liked the Panang curry and thought it was a good spice level for medium. I thought the Thai peanut was good and can best be described as a lighter version of massaman curry. All three dishes had a good mix of meat and vegetables. Was this good Thai food? Yeah, but is it worth the drive out here? For me, no. If you live closer, then it might be. We had a group of 6 and the service was pretty good. I saw the white cashier that another reviewer had mentioned and she was cracking a smile, so maybe she reads Yelp. Water glasses were refilled promptly and the food came out with little wait. Parking is a pain in the butt though. The parking directly behind the restaurant is metered and can fill up pretty quickly. Fortunately, it's Sunday, so there was no charge. read more

Came here yesterday early evening for the first time. My husband and I had read the reviews and thought we'd give it a try. We were in the area, but saw that they don't open until 4pm on a Sunday. We took that as a good sign that if they were able to stay closed for a good part of the day, business must be good, and therefore, food should be good too! I'm sure you know where this is going. The food was not good. I mean, I've had the privilege to sample a lot of cuisines living in Los Angeles, and namely, there are a lot of Thai varieties. This place did not have any of the fragrant and savory tastes that Thai food should have. We ordered the Tom Yum Goong, Chicken Pad Thai, and the Beef Prik Khing. First came out the soup. It wasn't bad, but the soup definitely lacked any dimension of flavor, and simply tasted salty and sour. We didn't taste the essence from the galangal, lemongrass. The mushrooms were canned, and the only thing that was fresh was the shrimp. In one bowl, we were only given 3 shrimp. For close to $5, we expected more. Our Pad Thai and the Prik Khing arrived at the same time about 10 minutes after our soup, so service was quick, but as soon as it arrived, we knew it wouldn't be the same. First off, the Pad Thai did not have any tamarind juice in it, otherwise, the color would not be a brownish/orange color. It tasted like it was cooked in soy sauce. There were no other vegetables besides the bean sprouts and those were not even washed or blanched. Where were the peanuts? The Prik Khing was supposed to be a red curry, but there was no curry in the sauce. It was simply a satay sauce that they added some soy sauce to to make it a darker appearance. The only good thing about our experience was that service was good, and our water was always filled. Food, on the other hand, not good at all. Suffice to say, we will not be coming back here, and if you are looking for authentic Thai food, this is not the place for it. read more

I had the Pad Von Sen and it was delicious, my boyfriend had Chicken Pad Thai and he said it was great. The Thai Tea was really too sugary though, which is why I knock it down to four stars. The entire meal was under $20 for the two of us, which at any other Birmingham establishment would be closer to $40. Everyone has their favorite Thai place, right? My co-worker suggested this place to me over....and over.....and over again. Last night, on the way home from work, there was a parking spot open not far from Sy Thai, so I took the plunge. I went in and ordered take out - my co-worker's recommendation, Thai Peanut, Pad Thai and spring rolls. Trying other people's favorites doesn't always work out.. The mild pad thai was way spicier than we were used to. One end of spring roll was burnt. The Thai Peanut was just plain strange and definately not up my alley. Crazy, because peanut butter is my favorite food and this dish is chock full of peanuty goodness. Yet, not my cup of tea. Er, thai. Whatever. To be fair....during the 10 minutes that I waited for my order, the place was an absolute revolving door! Tons of takeout customers. The location is also fab especially for apres movie munchers....1/2 a block from the Uptown Palladium. This is by far the best location of this restaurant. The Shores location is also good, but there seems to be something off about the Troy location. Small restaurant with a parking structure behind it and second entrance from the alley. The pad thai is amazing. Our other favorites include peanut curry, thai peanut, peanut noodle, basil fried rice, and egg noodle. If you dine in, shrimp chips and soup are usually included. Middle of the road prices. I do have to say, their chicken fried rice has definitely won me over. It's really yummy, with big chunks of chicken in it. But they still aren't consistent with their spice level. Sy Thai is a small Restaurant with a big menu. Full of the usual Thai dishes that you expect in America & from the ones i have tried, Pad Thai, Green Curry They are OK without any wow factor, but where i felt let down is in the quality & Quantity of the vegetables, the dishes are to bland & too large, they should be smaller to allow for greater choice, unless you go with 6-8 people it is impossible to eat a proper Thai meal. The tom Yum soup is also very average. The Service is good, it can get very busy & long waits are not unusual, it is a very convenient spot for before or after Birmingham movie theatres. read more

this place is very good, however the seating may take a while. Because the place is small, it is usually packed so you will end up waiting for a table most likely. That is also one thing I like about the place tho, since it's small food gets to you quicker and they put more emphasis on service. The food is really good, I have yet to try something there that I didn't like. Although any of the dishes with brown sauce can be quite salty, they are still fairly good. My favorite dishes are the pad thai and gang gai. So good, especially when you eat it with rice. The prices are quite fair too. Nice place. Wish they had an outdoor patio to eat but not a deal breaker. Went with my girlfriend and her little sister and we all enjoyed the food. I got the roasted duck with the chili sauce instead of the brown sauce and it was great. They got the sesame chicken and the curry coconut. No complaints all around. I stopped going here years ago and against my better judgement, I ordered lunch from here with my coworkers. I was so mad I wasted my money and calories on the tasteless dish I got. I ordered pad thai medium. I normally eat Bangkok Cuisine and get hot because I know what I'm getting so I figured i'd stay on the safe side with Medium. When I asked for medium spice I didn't mean I wanted NO FLAVOR. I opened my container and for the price I paid, there was barely any food in there. I'm a tiny girl and though I like to eat, I ate EVERY LAST BITE....and wasn't full! There was absolutely NO flavor and a giant pool of watery mess at the bottom of my container. I will never go back here. Even if the dish I get at Bangkok Cuisine isn't spicy, the flavor is phenomenal! I will keep going there from now on. read more

The first time I went there, I had the pad thai with scallops from the lunch menu. It had at least a dozen large scalops, perfectly cooked, for around $10. I don't know what it is about Thai food, but I feel as though it's that one type of ethnic cuisine that can please almost everyone in a crowd. With a competing business just down the road, I'm somewhat surprised at the success of Sy Thai. Firstly, the establishment is extremely small and always packed. For so long I was hesitant to try it, not because I doubted the quality of their food, but because I hate waiting for service. Beyond the size of the restaurant, Sy Thai's food is good for a variety of reasons. First of all, like most Thai restaurants, the patron can alter the spiciness of the entree. I recommend mild plus for a hint of spice. Also, you can ask for low oil--which I find particularly helpful in dishes like Pad Thai. Additionally, the protein in the dish is also customizable. I love their tofu because it's fried (which is something I usually hate) but it's done very lightly so that the tofu doesn't completely lose the smooth texture. The portions are huge so you can definitely split any entree and get an appetizer so that your meal is inexpensive and not overfilling. There is plenty of parking around this restaurant (available at varying fees) but I recommend putting your car in the garage behind the building because the first 2 hours are free. read more

Ive been a huge fan for years but my how some things have changed. Ok so they did a remodel some time ago and it didn't improve the experience. It lacks the life and color it had. The meal tasted good but as I ate with my family we could tell that the amount of chicken and Salmon was a smaller portion and more noodles had been added instead. Hot is very spicy but not overbearing. There is a nice choice of food but their Lunch and Dinner menu prices differ. Hot n Sour soup was only available for lunch which ends at 3 which was disappointing. Restrooms very clean, dishes were clean, portions were nice and filling but not stuffing.
