Had a great afternoon treat at Sylas and Maddy's. We went on a Saturday in June of 2021 and it was very hot, nearly 100 degrees, that day in Lawrence. So, Sylas and Maddy's was very busy for 2 reasons: the really good ice cream and the fact that the place has air conditioning and is cool. Service was great even though it was crowded. They have a great system where someone helps you then they circle back and help the next people in line. It was clear the employees were well trained and able to handle a busy time. So, while the line was always moving during the half hour or so we were there it never got out of hand and you never waited in it very long. There were several places to sit as well, the place is more spacious than I was expecting as we approached. They have a lot of classic flavors of ice cream but also some unique ones. They sold maybe a half dozen or so to go in the freezer case, so you could just grab a half gallon and leave. I went with the strawberry cheesecake in a dipped waffle cone. The cone was great, crunchy and a bit sweet. They put a whopper in the bottom of the cone which helps with dripping (I assume) but was also a pleasant surprise at the end. The ice cream itself was first rate. Creamy and flavorful, the strawberries were excellent. I'd absolutely get this again and will return to S&M's on future trips. I usually get two scoops with a waffle cone. The scoops are huge and well worth the calories. My favorite is coconut but it's not on the menu so you have to ask for it. It's also only available in the summer. Another good one to try is the variety which is 3-4 flavors in smaller sizes. The seating is ok but not as big as it should be for the amount of customers who come through. The customers are usually from the movie theater nearby. There is also seating outside. Eric R. and I tried so many flavors, but I settled on a "single" which is 2 scoops! I got lemon custard pie and Irish cream in a waffle cone. It was SO good! At the bottom of the waffle cone there was sneakily a whopper! I suppose it holds the ice cream from dripping out of the bottom of the cone. We visited during our day trip to Lawrence, and made a point of visiting due to their recent highlight on Yelp's "Top Ice Cream" in every state list. This place did not disappoint. The ice cream was phenomenal. They had about two dozen flavors to choose from, as well as waffle cones & bowls (a personal favorite), and some toppings. They have both "plain" flavors and ones loaded with mix-ins to suit any taste. The ice cream was fresh and creamy and delicious. I got a waffle bowl with a single scoop, which they are willing to divide between two flavors. I particularly liked the cookie monster flavor. Service was prompt and kind, and prices were super reasonable. It wasn't too packed when we visited - we were expecting a line out the door as other Yelpers have indicated. The most recent time I went there, I was downtown with my friend and even though it was a cold day, we were craving some ice cream. My friend and I are very indecisive people especially when it comes to ice cream flavors. One of the employees was quick to help us as soon as we walked through the door. She was very polite and ready to help us pick the perfect flavor for our taste. We both asked for a couple of samples which they happily provided us with. I ended up getting 'strawberry cheesecake' and my friend got 'peanut butter freak.' There were a surprising amount of flavor options that made the decision tricky. There are one hundred fifty total flavors with forty of them being featured each day. They also offer dairy free options such as sorbet. The business offers many topping options such as sprinkles, chocolate chips and various other popular candies. You can also choose from the list of a cup, cake cone, waffle cone, waffle bowl, or a yummy cone(waffle cone dipped in chocolate and hand rolled in candy topping). With all of these different choices, every person is guaranteed to find their ideal combo. Once they moved into the new building, so many more people were given the opportunity to enjoy their scrumptious ice cream without waiting in a long line. Some people may say that the line is still way too long for them, but I can tell you it is worth the wait! I loved the memories created in the old location, but the new building has much more space, including a new basement addition that can be rented out for events. When I moved to Lawrence in the summer of 2018, one of the small businesses that stood out in the area was a small ice cream shop named Silas and Maddy's. Even though I live across town from the place, Silas and Maddy's is a great place to get ice cream because it tastes delightful, it is located in a great part of town, and it is reasonably priced. To start off, the ice cream there is unmatched by anywhere in Kansas.. At Silas and Maddy's, they have so many options for ice cream ranging from vanilla bean to grasshopper. I have only tried a few flavors like strawberry cheesecake, salted caramel, and gold mine, but none of them have disappointed me. They use delicately picked, fresh ingredients to ensure that the ice cream will be very delicious. The food is great, but you have to be near other establishments to attract customers. Luckily, Silas and Maddy's is located on the most well-known and vibrant street in Lawrence, Massachusetts Street. The street is filled with small businesses that all are very high quality. This location makes the shop stand out a lot more, and it feels more significant when you go to get ice cream compared to getting Dairy Queen right next to your house. Most ice cream shops get far more expensive the better quality you get, but Silas and Maddy's is reasonably cheap. At McDonalds, a single M&M McFlurry costs over 6 dollars, and they don't taste the best. At Silas and Maddy's, most of the ice cream is around $3-$4, with the most expensive thing being $5. Silas and Maddy's doesn't cut back on the serving too. A single scoop on a waffle cone that costs around $4 will fill you up with just the right amount of ice cream to satisfy your sweet tooth. If you want to get "cheap" ice cream from McDonalds, think again, because you could get half the price and double the quality at Silas and Maddy's. All in all, Silas and Maddy's has great food, prices, and a good location. They have high quality ingredients to make the best ice cream in Kansas, they are located on the most lively street in Lawrence, and they have much better quality than McDonalds and cost much less. read more
