Excellent locally made ice cream! If you are Lawrence and like Ice Cream, this is THE SPOT. I was in town for a basketball game and stopped by three times in three days. First off, they have a very creamy product, sweet and soft (as in not hard-frozen). Scoops are good sized portions and priced very reasonably - 2 scoops in a waffle cone for under $5. On-site-made Waffle cones have a crispness. They also drop a chocolate malt ball in the cone before scooping and fill it - nice treat when you get to it. Wide variety of flavors, I tried a lot and they were all good. Almond Joy - very good mix of coconut and chocolate with chunks. Rock Choc Jayhawk - sweet cream with brownies and chocolate chunks. I think this was my favorite. Vanilla Bean - close second. Rich vanilla flavor and very creamy. Gold Dust - forgot what all is in here, but it was a tasty mix. Sweet Cream - just what it sounds like - pure and delicious. Oreo Cheesecake - fabulous quality cheesecake flavor with broken up chunks of Oreo. They also had a number of candy mixes like Snickers and Reeses. read more

We really enjoyed our visit to this place! The ice cream was flavorful and super creamy. We found out that the ice cream didn't melt fast compare to all the other ice cream shops we have been to. It turned out that they freeze their ice cream at least eight hours, which is good. If I have another chance, I would love to try their ice cream with the sugar cone or waffle cone. 4.5 stars. GET A WAFFLE CONE. We made the mistake of getting only one of our orders in a waffle cone, and deeply regretted not getting everything in a waffle cone (or waffle cones). They make them in house, they are just the right amount of flavorful and crunchy and... even if you're not a cone person, try it here. On the ice cream side, my favorite was "da bomb" - cookie dough ice cream with Oreos. The Oreos gave the cookie-dough-less licks so much more flavor. It was really great, I can't imagine why more shops don't do something like this flavor. The dinosaur egg (sweet cream with fudge and malted milk balls) was good, but not as flavorful as da bomb. There really are not enough stars for this place, they are amazing. I had the lavender lemon cake. Lavender lemon cake was the May featured flavor and it was divine. Beautiful lavender color with big chunks of tangy lemon cake. The lavender was not over powering, more like a sweet cream with a subtle but recognizable flavor and the lemon cake gave it great texture and zingy flavor. Very nice open space, good table space and the employees are great and happy to share their favorite flavors. read more

I have always loved Sylas & Maddy's their icecreams are always good and they have a ton of flavors always. However I think since covid they now have reduced the size of all their scoops which is really not my cup of tea. The junior cup size is no longer a choice because they have now made the junior scoop into a single size scoop for more of a cost (a rip off!!) I'm saying this because it needs to go back to the old way you use to be able to get a single scoop and choose two different flavors of icecream it was my favorite choice now you cant do that and they give you a single scoop not even in a bowl but this weird plater bowl i've never gotten icecream in before i dont like it. Now to get what I used to get I would need to order the medium size which is ratio wise what I always got but now their claiming is this "bigger" size for more money, no no. It shouldnt bother me at all its an icecream shop but the large is actually a medium, the medium is actually a small, and the small is a junior size mini scoop 0/10 for whoevers idea this was. read more

That said, I ordered a SINGLE scoop of ice cream in a cup and it was more than enough for me -- it's super dense and packed in. They don't cheat you on the scoop size. A Lawrence must visit, and a Lawrence tradition. Locally owned, with home made ice cream that is spot on. It sits on Mass Street, with parking in the front. They have a chalk written menu, and so many flavors, I needed to sample several. I sample seven flavors: cotton candy, bubble gum, sweet cream, salted pretzel, chocolate chip, caramel, strawberry. I decided after trying 7 to make my decision. I chose bubble gum in a home made waffle cone. By the way, they sell bags of broken waffle cones...don't tempt me. My cone was $3.50. Worth every quarter. (I come to Lawrence with bunches of quarters for parking). When I received my ice cream cone, and chose a seat and table, a group of college students came in after me. Business remained steady, and the shop got kind of crowded. The waffle cone had a malted milk ball in the bottom of it. That was a yummy surprise. The bubble gum ice cream was blue colored, with real pieces of gum. I chewed the gum then placed it in a napkin. I can see atleast 7 reasons, or more, to return to Sylas & Maddies. It is hands down my favorite ice cream location in America. Even Murry's doesn't top it. This shop is open year round. Glad I make infrequent trips to Lawrence to experience it. Wanted our 13 yr old Grandson to visit Mass Street in Lawrence since we were passing through on a road trip, so we took him to Sylas & Maddy's for Ice Cream. Grandson selected "The Bomb" - some type of malt which had Oreo cookie & other yummy ingredients. I had a single scoop of butterfinger Ice Cream - delish! My 12 year old niece found this niche on our first visit to Lawrence. She just followed the stream if people with ice cream cones in their hand. There was a massive line at about 10pm, but it was well worth the wait. She got a birthday cake waffle cone and I opted for butter pecan. Easily the BEST ice cream I've tasted. homemade ice cream on the best street in Lawrence, Kansas? YES! I came here after getting dinner at the brewery on Mass Street, for dessert. It was the best way to end a night of strolling down Mass Street browsing cute stores and doing some shopping. I got the smallest scoop and thought it was reasonably priced compared to Coldstone, and the portion was just right for me. They let you sample flavors if you ask and everyone was really friendly. I got the English toffee flavor, kind of a mix between butter pecan and some other nuts, and it was yummmmyy. The Jayhawks flavor is another favorite, and my friends ordered the chocolate one with chocolate-covoered chocolate-somethings and chocolate syrup or something like that. Apparently it was decadent and if you are a chocolate lover you should definitely try that. Sylas & Maddy's provides downtown Lawrence with a lovely place for a sweet treat after dinner or before a movie. The number of flavors available at any given time is well over 30 and new flavors are constantly being rotated in (though there are always several classic stand-bys waiting for you if you prefer some consistency). I'm a person who usually sticks with one or two things at a place, but half of the fun of returning to Sylas & Maddys every week is exploring all the new tastes. The servers are always polite and pretty forgiving of my relatively extensive taste-testing. The ice cream flavors range from average to excellent (and much of the variation depends on personal taste); some come across as a tad artificial but the majority of flavors are interesting and delicious. There are some subtle and others complex and a flavor to match just about any mood. The waffle cones are excellent and lend themselves well to different flavor combinations (the Irish Creme and Butter Brickle are especially complementary). They are the right amount of sweet and baked golden -- never burned. Occasionally you'll find the cones can be a bit crumbly where it's wrapped around, but that is more a testament to the hand-made process than to poor execution. Provided you have any love for ice cream, it would be hard not to find something here you enjoyed. The portions for a single-scoop are very generous, the selection is phenomenal, and the quality of the flavor is well above average. If you are a chocolate lover you would like the ice cream. If their selection was more of a variety other than chocolate I would given a higher rating. The waffle cones are good but at the bottom is a chocolate ball. The flavor I had was sweet cream, which had no flavor and was a waste unless you add it to another flavor. The staff stated sweet cream was close to vanilla but sweeter. I strongly disagree. No flavor and it wasn't sweet or creamy. My husband got the chocolate brownie swirl. The best flavor is BY FAR their sweet cream-- it's pretty great. I come get a couple scoops on special occasions and bring them home to pair with an artisanal root beer because I'm extra like that. The ice cream here is well made, there's no doubt about that. However, it isn't quite "best I've ever had" but definitely better than the grocery (particularly since y'all don't have blue bell up here). If you had blue bell we probably wouldn't come here just because the upcharge wouldn't be worth it-- if that gives you an idea. However, blue bell is 5 star ice cream, so that says something about how good this is. My main issue is that the atmosphere in here is always kind of weird. It feels either like a rushed, whirlwind of chaos or like a tornado just went through it. It's not a good place to be for long periods, imho. That's the main motivator for the 4 instead of 5.
