My family and I have been going to Sylvia's on westheimer and have loved it every time. On our first visit here, we watched as several other parties who arrived after us were seated before us. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, though we had three hungry kids, we waited. The last straw was when a party of seven adults arrived and was seated within five minutes. Surely our family of five, waiting for about thirty minutes, took preference. I hate to assume, but I can't help but notice that preference was give to all the white customers. Maybe it was our brown skin or my headscarf that warranted the delay. I'm never one to assume or even think this way in my personal life, but when the difference in treatment is so obvious, the doubt starts to diminish. For those who love the Sylvia's chain, use caution at this location. To management, I hope I am wrong and that your priority is not those customers who *look* a certain way. All I can say is that I had the worst meal of my life. I had a lump in my throat and the constant sense that I was second class here. read more

Great food and even better service! My husband and I come here all the time and have been regulars for several years. It has a warm and friendly atmosphere and some of the nicest people work there. Great happy hour specials and my personal favorite a frozen watermelon margarita and the Mexico City Enchiladas. Since restaurants are currently barred (Covid) from offering eat in service they are doing a fast no contact pick up option so we can still get awesome food and yummy margaritas. read more

I was practically begging my wife to try this place. I was like it looks like a decent place to eat enchiladas. I ordered the fajita enchiladas hold up lets bag up first 14 dollars for two enchiladas rice and charro beans expensive. I was like whatever for that price this should be good. Boy I was wrong the meat was flavorless and nothing to be desired. It felt like I got messed over. My wife got a taco very little meat. I think jack in the box give you more meat. My wife said she was less than satisfied with this. She ordered chips and guacamole for 4 dollars. A teaspoon of guacamole really. Yall just robbing people aren't yall. Word of advice please stay away from this place unless you like being screwed. Two thumbs down where do we get a refund. read more

this was my first time trying this place after living in this area for almost 2 years and passing by it every day. My wife loved the enchilada dinner as usual but was hungry and wasn't too happy that sometime in the past they changed their portions from 3 enchiladas to 2. The chips were the really thick kind you buy at HEB for $2 a bag but the sauce was really good. I ordered the 1/2 pound beef fajita dinner and the meat was cooked to medium-rare as I like it. I didn't know that when fajita meat is cooked MR that it tastes like there is no seasoning on it. I sure like fajitas that have a taste of salt, bl pepper, garlic, soy sauce, & onion powder and while the ones I had were cooked perfectly they tasted rather bland but I was brought a couple of salt packets when I asked. Sylvia's always had the best Tex-Mex in Houston but she might need to sneak in a little more often and see how the mice play when the cat's away. read more

I believe this place is a 3.5 Star place. I don't think the food was worth the pricing 12.99-16.99 for two enchiladas and rice (don't quote me on those prices). The food was good not amazing but good. The service was outstanding which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 2ish-3. Sopapillas (if that's how you spell it) was delicious!.... also I had gotten the chicken enchiladas which like I said was good just not warranted the price. My gf got the beef enchiladas which she thought was amazing but me not so much... if you don't mind paying what I feel an expensive price for enchiladas then you may enjoy. read more

My husband and I have been eating dinner at Sylvia's for 4 years....almost every Friday night since it opened! We typically start with their complimentary warm, freshly made tortilla chips and tasty salsa and of course a margarita or 2 (the best in Houston)! The food is consistently fresh and delicious! We usually order the grilled fish tacos...... the homemade flour tortillas are the best we've had. The refried beans are incredible as well as the fish with the guacamole topping. We've taken guests there who also rave about the food including the enchiladas, homemade soups and salads. The tres leches cake is to die for. On a few occasions we have even dined on Sunday for the amazing brunch spread. In addition to Sylvias amazing authentic Mexican food, the waiters, waitresses are all extremely competent and friendly. Service is excellent! The managers Daniel and Jaime are wonderful! They greet us warmly on every visit and assure that we, and the other diners, have a positive and memorable dining experience. This is excellent food. I was in for business and a coworker local to Houston recommended it. Vi had the Hidalgo. It was excellent. The red sauce isn't "hot". But it had a little kick to it, so don't be concerned with that. The beans and rice were also great. All in all a terrific meal and I will be back. read more

I've actually been told by multiple different people that this place had really good food, but I've never had the chance to give it a shot, I'm hardly in that part of town. One day my GF and I were running errands and happened to be out in that area, so we gave it a shot. I have to admit, I wish I'd gone there sooner and not waited so long. The facility was clean, the service was amazing and the food was very delicious. We walked in and were immediately greeted and walked to our table. Once we sat down the server came over, brought chips and salsa and asked for our drink order. At that time I also ordered a bowl of queso (how can you not?!?). When she brought over the queso, she took our food order & less than 10 minutes later, we had our enchiladas. The queso was delicious and creamy and the salsa seemed to be made in house, it was amazing. When the enchalada came out, they came out on a metal plate, which was really cool. They were delicious. I had heard such good things about this place but we never had the opportunity to give them a shot. We will be going back when we have the opportunity. I'm thinking we will likely try out the woodway location next since it's close to our place. Hopefully the food and experience will be the exact same. read more

I'll start with what I like about this place. Its a nice place. Date worthy nice but not fancy. The fajitas are mesquite smoked which is pretty awesome. $4 Happy Hour margaritas. They are small but they are potent. HH also has $2.50 beer. The location is convenient, and the menu I think has enough options for everyone. They also have a nice patio that has potential to be a really nice hang out spot. What I dont like, I feel the food is not worth the price. The food is at best average. They are a bit stingy with portions. Chips were definitely old which is just unacceptable. Salsa was forgettable. Pickled jalapenos from a can. I mean its simple Mexican / tex-mex food but they are charging $15-18 average per plate. They have no food for happy hour, only drinks. The HH drink menu is small, almost non existent. I still wasnt clicking with the staff. They werent bad but they just didnt seem to be happy to be there. For me, this place doesnt do it for me. They are touting recognition on the front cover of their menu but either they aren't following the other locations or I have just been to too many better Mexican restaurants. read more

Sylvia's catered my wedding and the food was amazing! We got beef fajitas, Mexico city enchiladas, a few appetizers, a chocolate tres leches for the groom's cake, and raspberry margaritas. Their estimates of how much food we would need were spot-on. Everyone loved the food (especially the cake!) We have had them cater family events before and honestly I wouldn't trust anyone else to cater my events. They do such an amazing job and the food is always perfect. Everyone loved it, especially the fajitas! Thank you so much!!! I also have to add that the experience dining in and to-go are also always great, this place really never disappoints. Let's see came here with a couple of my employees for Cinco de mayo so it was busy but after waiting for 90 minutes for a table which was expected me problems with that. We ordered some drinks they took about 10 minutes Along with the chips in this time of waiting we made are dinner order Justin ordered enchiladas as usual at any Mexican restaurants and me and Tiffany ordered Fajitas for two over an hour later are food was served all cold I said oh hell no and called for the manager who did promptly address the issue I said all the food is cold if heaters are supposed to be sizzling he said no problem I'll take him to warm them up. I told the guys no way were out of here warm up my Fajitas I don't think so I didn't come to a restaurant for to be served leftovers. Will never return. read more

Okay, half and half star because the waiter was nice. I don't think they should be cooking any seafood here. Or any enchiladas for that matter. The enchiladas are half a portion, like baby ass tortillas a 1 yr old could eat, and they are just.not.good. And they don't care. We have to stop by our neighborhood taco bus now to make it better. We dined @ Sylvia's for Father's Day, service was excellent and the food was delicious!! We have been to this location several times but it has been over a year besides the To-Go order we did on Mother's Day this year. The Chili Con Queso & Frontera Guacamole are a must for starters!! I've never had better enchiladas anywhere, being a vegetarian I like the option of the Caesar salad in place of the beans & rice. We are for sure adding Sylvia's back in our eat out rotation!! Oh my! Great atmosphere, excellent service, finest food! We highly recommend this restaurant! The enchiladas that we had were delicious. The tortillas perfectly made. The beef taco was seasoned just right. Hazel, our server, was friendly and helpful. Daniel, the manager, was always ensuring that his guests were satisfied. I watched as Hazel and Daniel jumped into action to help an elderly guest who had spilled her drink. They were quick to act and so helpful, assuring her that all was well. Extremely disappointed in our family meal tonight at Sylvia's. I feel more than confident in saying that she would be too, if she knew about the fajita special we were served tonight. As soon as it was put on the table (with no sizzle) there was a stench. I asked my daughter about the shrimp smell as she is a Chef and VERY familiar with using them in all kinds of dishes. She knew immediately they were bad and was surprised their Chef would even prepare them, much less send them out for someone to eat. She and my husband were both brave enough to taste. They both agreed they tasted and smelled like ammonia. We sent them back immediately and opted for chicken and beef only. However, the manager came out and said he was remaking the entire dish. In addition, he would give us a free dessert. He said he threw the entire batch of shrimp out (too little too late). At that point, I had lost my appetite and wasn't eating... the next platter seemed fine to other family members that decided to give it another go. I'm just not sure how these shrimp got passed anyone in that kitchen! Unacceptable, in my opinion. We were not looking for a free meal by any means. We have been patrons of Sylvia's since she opened in a very small space on Westheimer years ago. When you choose to serve bad shrimp that contaminates your quail, beef, chicken etc and then it takes another 20 min to get another meal out and everyone else has finished dinner you don't offer free sopapillas. You at least offer to comp the platter all together and pray they don't get food poisoning! If shrimp is on the menu you know when it smells bad NOT to cook it, much less serve it. read more

My family and I celebrated my 50th birthday. I usually love their food which is why I decided to make this place where I wanted to celebrate. We made reservations for 22. They said with a party over 16, they set out a buffet of fajitas and an enchilada of your choice. They do this to make sure the quality is good. Unfortunately, it was not. Some of the beef fajitas were rare (which they did bring out more that were much better) and the tortillas stuck to each other. The staff was friendly, the waitress was good. We were also disappointed that we were not able to take any leftovers from was laid out especially when we paid over $23 a person (not worth it). And over $10 a kid, I have 6 year old twins that would have been happy with kid's meals). P.S. if you have a big party, either go somewhere else or just show up. It was a Wednesday at 5:00 PM, the restaurant only had a few customers. The food would be so much better ordering off menu!! read more

On 06-30-22, after my mom,s funeral I took about 50 of my family members to Sylvia's for lunch. I am writing to complain about what I perceive as unethical behavior/billing practices by Jaime (manager). The day before the funeral, (O6-29-22) my husband and I drove from Sugar Land to Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen on Eldridge to see if they could accommodate us. Jaime said they could as 1:15 pm was at the end of their peak hour. He went on to show us 3 menus with 3 prices. We chose the 28.00 per plate menu when we erroneously determined that it was a good price....we made that decision when Jaime reassured us that gratuity was included In the 28.00 price. He ran my credit card for 160.00 on 06-29-22....a reservation fee....which he did not credit the 2,500.00 bill (approx) which I received after the family luncheon the next day... O6-30-22. He said to me that was not refundable. To add insult to injury, Jaime charges me about 348.00 for gratuity. When I got the bill at the end of the luncheon, I specifically asked Jaime... "you are not charging me for gratuity, and he said "no". I had the itemized printout of the bill but did not have my glasses. Jaime went on to say " I charged you but I credited it". I trusted him! What a mistake! His ethic behavior is shameful! I called him, the next day after the lunch ...and he will not refund me. I spoke to another manager... Daniel and he would not pass me on to Sylvia. This is not right! I was given the name of a Marketing agent...so I can voice my complaint! You cannot run a business like this...integrity and ethics should be valued...as a customer, I was left with a very bad taste. It left me wondering about the validity of the other charges...besides the 28.00 meal...the drinks...the desserts...was the 2,500.00 bill accurate? Jaime's record of what my husband and I perceive as dishonest...left me with many doubts! Sylvia...I hope that you respond to the name of your restaurant...your brand. If you no longer are present to manage, please hire people with integrity and ethics...your managers need to be trained as they were not on the same page! Train them on custOmer satisfaction and on a value system that is not necessarily tied to net profits. Christian values...are of paramount importance...they are old fashion values that still carry a big stick! Note: Daniel offered us a free lunch to compensate for my trouble...which I declined! Normally , I enjoy my lunch, dinner or brunch at Sylvia's. I have dined at Woodway, Eldridge and old Westheimer location. Well today was different.. I brought my grandson who loves avocado on flour tortilla tacos.. (SMART KID)... so we ask for a sliced avocado on flour taco. Well without any discussion, I get 3 tortillas and several slices of Avocado.. ok, so I have to prepare my own taco. NOT WHAT I ASKED FOR BUT I CAN MAKE A TACO.... my lunch and my daughters lunch were very good, but then it was check time.. RIPOFF.. the waiter charges me $3.50 for the measly avocado and $1.50 for the tortillas. I am a teacher so that equals $5.00... REALLY. A taco for the baby is $5.00.. why.. waiter said, WE DONT SERVE INDIVIDUAL TACOS. a little late sir, you never mentioned that. Well, I called the manager who could not stop texting and ignoring me, but I got him... Asked him, he wasn't even sure what I was saying, seemed confused and said, yes $5.00.. so what's the problem. I said, well I know Sylvia.. I will ask her about this and all of a sudden he said.. well, we can make it $3.50 for the taco. Still a ripoff.. but better. I don't like to drag a business through the mud unless they have really wronged me. (I'm looking at you Neiman Marcus...) But my experience at Sylvia's this past weekend was truly awful and disgusting. We signed up for a cooking class - 3 hours of enchilada making and I was so thrilled to learn everything a place called "Enchilada Kitchen" had to offer. First of all, it is NOT a cooking class. There is no cooking! It's just a demonstration so you sit and watch Sylvia cook for 3 hours. And the room is set up terribly. Unless you are sitting in front, you will not be able to see anything in the pots/pans. They have an overhead monitor but the image is even smaller than if you looked in person so it's not helping at all. So while we sat and watched her cook and listened to the stories of her personal life, her divorce, her struggles with landlords, struggles with employees, the time an ex-employee shot her, (anyone else getting the feeling she might have some serious interpersonal issues?)... they give you as many drinks as you'd like. So I decided to get a margarita. Sure it was 2pm but it was 1 hour in and I was bored out of my mind. It was the WORST margarita I have ever had. My husband got a lemonade and I kid you not, my margarita tasted like they had taken some lemonade and mixed in a tablespoon of tequila. The chips they gave us to snack on tasted stale and the salsa had no flavor at all. I will skip ahead. Here are some gross things I witnessed: - Sylvia used her hands and fingers to taste things (as in licked her hands and fingers), and then used her hands, without washing them, to pick up onions and other items that went into our food. - She used a spoon to taste a sauce, then put the SAME spoon back in the pot, and gave another taste to someone else. Then, they scooped that same sauce into small containers for everyone in the class. Needless to say, I declined. Finally at the end of class they brought us enchiladas to eat and I put aside my fears about kitchen cleanliness and tasting habits to eat some. The way she went on and on about how much better their enchiladas are than every other place in the world I was expecting the best enchilada in the world. It was fine. Literally fine. Nothing special. I've had better and I've had worse. I left livid. LIVID. They basically charged us $60 per person to listen to a sales pitch about the restaurant while we watched someone else cook for 3 hours, and then let us eat some enchiladas which I could have just paid $15 for. read more

Sylvia got it going on over here! Good drinks, frozen margaritas, enchiladas out the wazoo , and great service! Being my first time here and an enchilada virgin, I was at a total loss. So I decided to try the North Sampler thing. Now this thing came with some sort os a little side salsa that had avocado and one big red chip stuck in the center of it and oh my was this thing the highlight of my meal or what. This little salsa had so much flavor, and everything was bright and elevating to the taste buds! Just delicious! The enchiladas it came with were pretty good. The seafood one was amazing, though the cheese and beef ones weren't all that bad either. Needless to say I wiped my plates clean. I loved the presentation as well. It came in a big tray and was all majestic looking. Made me feel like I was really eating something somewhere. I give Sylvia's a two thumbs up! read more

So my sister said I had to try this place that "smelled like Mexico." We had our sister date night on Tuesday. I was very worried because of all the negative reviews and I'll admit it made me not want to come here. I am so happy I did. The decor surprised me, it was much fancier than I expected. Soon enough my worry was gone when they placed the chips and salsa in front of us. The salsa was a salsa and not pico de gallo in juice. The first thing I'll order from a Mexican place is their enchiladas so this restaurant was fitting for me. I got the south of the border because I'm terribly bored of Tex-Mex food in Houston. That mole sauce! It was the the perfect sweet taste that I always long for in my mole. I haven't found many "Mexican" places that offer mole and the ones that do that I've tried don't do it the sweet way. The Mexico City was my second favorite. Just like my Tia makes them! The Hidalgo was my third favorite. The Morelia I was not a fan of because I simply never acquired the taste for the red chili sauce, but this is the style my dad cooks in so I can assure you that this is authentic. Now we move on to dessert...yes we made room for the elusive chocolate tres leches. It was the perfect moisture, not too dry and not too soggy. What really makes this place 5 star to me is the service. Everyone was super nice and attentive. It just heightened the food experience. And there really was a "smell" that took me back to my childhood where we'd visit my dad's ranch in Mexico. Sysco avocado for the guacamole out of a bag, fajita tacos so greasy that the tortillas were transparent with grease when they got to the table, pools of grease on the "just made" enchiladas that arrived at the table 10 minutes after being ordered, and sweet and sour mix out of a gun for a mixed drink that states simple syrup on the description. I am a huge fan of Sylvia's. First off their margaritas actually have tequila in them. They are not in some tiny high ball glass. They are made with everything you want in a margarita. And then served in a frosty cold big Mexican goblet. I go in on some afternoons and sit at the bar and have queso and margaritas. Their carne guisada is excellent. Large portion of Mexican beef stew in a hearty gravy. Beans and rice? Yes. The chunks of beef are super tender. I usually have plenty to take home for later. I am a big fan of their pork enchiladas. The Hildago on the menu. Get either the green or red sauce but know that when they say the red sauce is hot...it is. I have tried their shrimp enchiladas too. Tampico on the menu. They were really good and I am not a fan of the seafood enchiladas usually. The Espanola sauce they come with should be served with everything here. Chicken ones area slo good. Hell, I have yet to find anything on the menu I don't like. Be sure to get the charro or black beans. I am not a fan of their refried been. Extra mushy for my taste. We recently had their fajitas. Damn. Very very good charred flavor. We had been searching for good fajitas since Café Adobe went all crazy bad. These come with some of the best grilled onions ever and butter...melted butter. Oh wow. It makes the fajita beef pop. We just got beef. So I can't speak of the chicken. The beef was plentiful - it looked like more than a pound - and very tender. Quick friendly service. Went out with friends on 3/20/16. Pros: Service was good, place was clean, food came out fast. Cons: Food was just ok.......for some odd reason, they didn't use cilantro in the Guacamole. It lacked flavor and a large order at $9 does not feed a party of 4. The chips were hard and cold.....store bought. Salsa was bitter **$75 (not including tip or drinks) for 4 adults and one child. IMO.....it was very pricey for a late lunch. read more

My son and I used to eat at the Sylvia's on Westheimer. Then we moved out of the state for the past four years. We missed this restaurant everyday we were gone. When we came back to Houston this was where my son wanted to go for his birthday. His words of the meal are the food tasted fantastic but a bit overpriced, the atmosphere felt uncomfortable and unwelcoming, the plating seemed a bit pretentious and the waiter was a bit of a jerk who continuously slammed the plates and glasses down like as though he was angry that we were there. All in all, he made us feel as if we were a burden on him and we didn't come in late. Sylvia's has the best mole that we've ever tasted, however, the atmosphere of the restaurant is not worth it. read more

I have been here many times it's not the best food but it is reasonable for the location and its okay. It's not memorable food, but usually it is decent food. Well today, for takeout, they served us rotten shrimp. The odor was so horrific! It smelled as if they dug it out of the trash. The car ride was horrible and we had to bag it up even more with a trash bag and go back to the facility to request a refund. We called them immediately and was told to come back for a refund. When we returned (15 minutes), the manager then gave a hard time giving a refund and did not own up to the fact that they served spoiled food. Even though others could smell it in the restaurant. Do not ever go to this facility they are subpar and I assume the entire kitchen is unclean and I doubt you are served fresh food. One item was tasted and it was bad. Hope he doesn't get sick !!
